It's much better for bitmap work, vector imaging and editing, and slicing. Just because Photoshop has these tools doesn't mean it's any good with them.

Oh, and handily enough, Fireworks can edit animated .GIFs on-the-fly.

I use fireworks because the whole adobe studio shiz works really nicely together. Made college work alot easier with fireworks/dreamweaver and I like fireworks because I use it. I use the adobe studio 8 trial version that works forever now and I would happily pay for it if I had money and had to pay for it.

It's got a few features that Photoshop doesn't have (ie. things you would find in illustrator, or indesign), and it's well integrated with Dreamweaver (coming from the same company and all). But mainly, I think they kept it on because there were people who used it as their tool of choice back when it was made by Macromedia, and by just getting rid of it, they would probably lose a lot of potential customers.

Only via ImageReady, which is absolute garbage. Fireworks has frame-by-frame and timescale options, which means it treats the GIF like a slideshow instead of several distinctly different images.

Animation on the cheap to make your website look better.  Outside of that and hilarious avatars, not really.

GIFs, not necessarily animated ones, are also great for bandwidth. If someone fires up the Digg effect on a small server hosting a handful of images, they'll usually swap those images out into GIF (from PNG, usually).

No, it can be done in Photoshop by itself. It's not great, but it can be done without Imageready.
