Does this belong in the Computers and Video Games section or the Music Talk section? HOLY SH-*ASPLOSHUN*
List the composers you think do their job well. From any game! Obscure or not, just any game. And it can be any composer that has done music for a game, eg. Harry Gregson-Williams, who did tracks for a whole fackload of games but a fackload of movies too.
I like the most:
Harry Gregson-Williams
The Uematsu (although some overrate him a bit).
Obviously missed a lot but that's for the rest of you to go on about =D
-
David Wise (Donkey Kong Country, motherfuckers)
Kelly Bailey (Half-Life durr)
Steve Henifin (Silicon Knights' go-to guy)
Jeremy Soule (I know the way the music was implemented in Morrowind and Oblivion wasn't that good, but the music itself was pretty much a perfect fit)
-
Grant Kirkhope was a fair replacement for David Wise for Donkey Kong 64.
Yoko Shimomura <3
Nobuo Uematsu
Koji Kondo
And to be wholly juvenile, I enjoy a lot of the Pokemon game's earlier music when it's sequenced with an orchestra like in Smashing, Live! (That Nintendo Power released Smash Bros concert)
Halo's music isn't bad either, though pretty much everything in Halo 3 was derivative of something in Halos 1 or 2..
-
Kow Otani (Shadow of the Colossus) - dude made the music sound as epic as the game
-
Richard Jacques. Not only does he have a familar sounding surname, he is also a lovely man who did some amazing Sega soundtracks, including Sonic R and the hilarious Metropolis Street Racer soundtrack. And also, I got drunk with him after ECTS one time and then he did the soundtrack to the videogame we were working on at the time. The game turned out to be rubbish, but the soundtrack was still awesome.

Monkey Island Theme Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DL6HYGwEwM)
According to wikipedia Michael Land (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Land) did the soundtrack for it.
Bitches.
-
Hirokazu Tanaka and Kenji Yamamoto, for various Metroid games
edit: a lot of people did the music for Katamari
-
Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest series)
and of course, Koji Kondo
-
Jesper Kyd does the soundtracks for the Hitman games which I think are all rather excellent. I dunno, I tend not to pay too much attention to music in games unless it's establishing a definite atmosphere (for example, the music the the first Diablo game made the game far more terrifying when I played it at night, in total darkness, at the age of 8).
-
Yasunori Mitsuda.
(Chrono Trigger)
-
I heard once that Masami Ueda was pretty good but then I listened to his stuff and I thought it was pretty damn generic this day and age.
-
Aside from Williams and Uematsu, I like Yasunori Mitsuda, who wrote the soundtrack to Chrono Cross--still, for my money, the best game soundtrack in existence.

Seconded. I thought the music for Hitman: Contracts was especially well done. I'd also second (or third?) Uematsu - I think the theme from the original Final Fantasy is among the tops for music in a game or a movie - and add whoever did the music for Medieval II: Total War.
-
Masafumi Takada, he did the No More Heroes OST. Pure goodness.
Kow Otani is also amazing for Shadow of the Colossus.
Not sure who did it besides the arranged OST, but the music from Mother 3 is also amazing. The arranged OST is by the Crazy Ken Band though.
-
Whoever did the music for the Game Boy Color versions of Zelda and Pokemon did a damn good job.
-
Harry Gregson-Williams for MGS2, Matt Uelmen for the Diablo games, Bjørn Arve Lagim for the Longest Journey. Oh, and Peter McConnell for Grim Fandango. Hell, any Lucasarts adventure game composers.
-
Akira Yamaoka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUxjPBe_ROk).

Pokemon's been Junichi Masuda and Go Ichinose pretty much consistently through the portable set. Someone else does the spin-offs.
-
My favourite Star Wars game soundtracks were the ones for the Old Republic series and Jesse Harlin's Republic Commando soundtrack.
A lot of the other Star Wars games I'd played used excessive amounts of the original movie tracks =P
-
Nobuo Uematsu for Final Fantasy 6
I have the Grand Finale CD, which is all the tracks performed by an orchestra. It's pretty awesome!
This is their version of "Terra's Theme" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io4apOKJYQE)
Final Fantasy 6 definitely had the best music of the original games.
-
I would say that Final Fantasy 6 had some tracks which were pretty much the best but to say that all of it was the best is pushing it a bit. Some of the tracks after a while downright pissed me off.
But I loved FFVI for what it was. The main appeal of Dissidia is the hardcore-ification that's happening for characters from I-VI, and to a lesser extent, VIII and IX. The Dissidia tracks sound bloody awesome from what I've heard so far.
I think the switch to Masashi Hamauzu and Takeharu Ishimoto as the mainstream FF composers is a fairly good choice. Together they pretty much cover the range of styles and moods that Uematsu was able to bring to the games. Both deliver hard-hitting tracks that have plenty of dynamism, something which Uematsu lacked in a few tracks over the years. My favourite tracks are "Arms of Shinra" from FFVII DoC and "Last Order" from the FFVII OVA.

Martin (Marty) O'Donnel Halo trilogy set the bar for game music of the 21st century. Pure genius.
-
Shoji Meguro is pretty neat. Works for Atlus and pretty much does the Shin MegaTen serieses. Lots of interesting little genre mash-ups in those.
-
Martin (Marty) O'Donnel Halo trilogy set the bar for game music of the 21st century. Pure genius.
Sorta sucks that after the first one, most of his work was just derivative of earlier songs. There were some promising themes that were just done to death.
-
Someone should probably mention Frank Klepacki
-
Amon Tobin did the Splinter Cell 3 soundtrack, which is pretty awesome.
-
Masafumi Takada - Best known for his work on the No More Heroes OST (which he did all but one song,) However, for true goodness, listen to some of the Music from Grasshopper Manufactures other hit (marginally) Killer7. In particular, I present to thee Rave On, one of my favorite pieces of music.

The guy who did most of the Nintendo stuff, (mario etc. I used to know his name). Incredibly catchy and jaunty themes. Good stuffs.
Whoever wrote the bloody tetris theme.
