Title: Please help: My motherboard gets power but no output or POST beep
Post by: clockworkjames on 08 Nov 2008, 12:32
So I sold my old e6600 to a friend and bought a shiny new q9550 for my system, put it in but would turn on with now output. Put the old CPU in but same thing happened, was in a rush to get out so I thought no biggie, I will fix it when I get back.

Processor is a q9550, memory is corsair xms2 6400(fancy old dhx stuff) GFX cards are 2 9600's.

At LAN I had the problem once that I had no signal but when I tried the other DVI port on the secondary card it worked fine, I am currently running the mobo on my desk withthe bare essentials hooked up, 1 stick of memory, CPU, 1 GFX card and still it powers on fine, then lights on the mobo when the PSU is plugged in, then the other light comes on when I cross the pins (screwdriver). There is no beep, I used an old little mobo speaker to test but it doesn't beep at all, like no series to indicate a fault but no single beep to indicate POST. I tried both my GFX cards but it makes no difference, there is nothing on screen and now I am wondering if the speaker could be not working and I am starting to get more than a little pissed off. I have resetted the CMOS by the button on the I/O at the back and also by leaving the battery out while the psu is unplugged and then I went away for a shower.

Nothing I have tried works and need some insight as to what I have not tried or could be the problem.

Oh and the mobo is a MSI p7n sli platinum.

Thankyou.

Are you able to get the mobo replaced? When I built my rig I received a bum mobo, initially. Got a replacement from Newegg in a week.

Which chipset does the Q9550 use? You'll probably have to update your BIOS.

RMA on my mobo is a last resort as I am not entirely sure it is at fault. The q9550 runs fine on a 750i nvidia chipset and the mobo can take a 45nm chip so no compatability issues, as for going from a 65nm e6600 to a 45nm q9550 resetting the cmos should have done the trick.
Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the effort :) as I am really up shit creek at the moment.

Not neccessarily; just because it can take a 45nm chip doesn't mean you don't need a BIOS update to do so.  Most boards even needed an update after the E0 45nm chips came out.  Of course, this doesn't explain no POSTing with your e6600. What bios version are you running?

I live by the if it ain't borked don't fix it rule for bios updates, I know I should and people say to do it but stuff can go wrong so I don't. I cannot update bios now anyway :/

BIOS would be the first thing I'd consider testing, especially if you haven't updated it in awhile. Use your old CPU to boot into disk.

Old cpu had same problem.

could be your power supply, not enough power to go around?

That was what I thought, but if it doesn't work even with the old CPU that's probably not the case.

Sounds kinda like you fried your motherboard? Did you use static bands when replacing the CPU? Did you touch anything you shouldn't have?

Touched metal radiator to ground myself before doing anything, never worn antistatic strap on any of the systems I have ever built, not fried a single component. Suppose there is a first time for everything but the board gets power and does most of what it is supposed to do. Will check with other hardware if I can tomorrow.

Hope it doesn't need sent back as MSI have a fucker of an RMA process. And I dunno if I still have the box :(

I grounded myself when I was installing some ram that fucked my last motherboard. 's possible you fried it.

Yeah, just seems weird how it spins up and mobo lights come on but no output.

And the psu is a corsair 620w so it is plenty powerful for what I am running at the moment and what I did run when it was complete.

Friggin MSI motherboards.  I actually had the same problem with mine now that I remember;  I had to put my p4 in every time I had a failed OC attempt.  Give me Asus or give me death!

Is there any way you can get your hands on a cheap p4 or e2*** chip?  Drop that in and see what happens if you can.

Then flee from the MSI board as quickly as possible.

Meh, is one of the only boards that fit my gfx cards in sli with the massive coolers, will try with a different chip today hopefully if not I might send it back and go for the 750i XFX board if possible.

Dunno if I made this clear in my first post but after I put my new chip in and it did not work I put my old one in and it would not work in the same way.

Yeah, it was clear, I was just offering my own experience.  Looks like an RMA.

Indeed it does, The manual said to use a 4pin on the mobo near the cpu but I have been told not using the 8pin when using a quad has fried the mobo from trying to draw too much power from the 4pin. Still not sure if I believe this but all the other components are fine.

RMA methinks.

Thanks guise :/

It's quite possible that you dislodged a motherboard component when you were installing the new CPU. See if all your bridge chips are seated properly. If it's not one of those, you might have broken a lead or trace on the board or a component. CPU heatsink clamps can put a lot of pressure on the socket, and also installing or removing them can break off capacitors.

You might also have dropped something conductive into the case while working on the machine and it's shorting something out. Since you'd have to remove it from the case to RMA, give it a good compressed air blast and a visual inspection to see if there's a washer or piece of wire laying across some contacts. Long shot, though.

Board looked fine, smelled okay too but all the capacitors were japanese made so I doubt it was ever going to be the problem. Got an RMA number so just need to send it back, bought a new one anyways because turnaround time would be too much for me to go without a PC, new XFX 750i board atm, is sweet but no new bios on the website yet grrr...
