So I'm currently (attempting to) participating in National Solo Album Month (http://nasoalmo.org/), a corollary to NaNoWriMo or Nat'l Novel Writing Month. Basically you blaze through a whole month writing and recording a whole album in the month of November.
I've actually hit a hell of a writing block, not to mention the fact that I'm usually in school all day, but I'm hoping to be able to get some songs written and recorded tomorrow during Veteran's Day. My nascent drumming skills have considerably improved over the past several weeks, so my strategy for the album is to come up with song snippets on guitar, then think a drum part over them. Record drums, guitar, and bass, then think up/record vocals for them.
Anyone else on QC thinking of doing this too? If anyone wants to listen to my acid test recording for NaSoAlMo, here (http://www.box.net/shared/1u7md8kzth) is a cover of "Nerves" by Silkworm.

A month? Psh, try one day (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,20035.0.html)!
In all seriousness, though, good luck with that. I wish I had enough time to do something like that, but November is always ridiculously busy for me, for some reason.
-
I've got three songs so far. Two of them suck, but one I really like.
-
Yeah, I just started learning guitar so I'm not able to do this yet. Hopefully next year though, but I'll probably be too 'busy' then -_-
-
Hey
Maybe I'll do this
I could probably do this

Do you know three chords? That's all you need.
-
Yeah, I think the 24-hour album was much more challenging.
-
Kinda off-topic, but what chords did you use to play Nerves? It sounds really close, there's just a few chords I can't work out.
-
The verse part can pretty much be played with power chords (B, E, and D) and the chorus was G, F sharp, B, and A.
-
Thank you so much, I couldn't work out the last two chords in the chorus and it was bugging me for ages.
-
I would love to do this. Problem is finding the time, though. I am always busy.
-
I'm doing it. I'm going to aim for as little time taken as possible to actually do it, because I reckon that'll make it more genuine and spontaneous.
-
I'll need help if I do it. I might enlist some friends to give me a hand.
-
at least with 30 days to record an album you have time to like, learn to play the songs (or even finish writing them) before you record them all.
-
So I wrote three songs about three weeks ago and haven't done anything since. I fail in the sense that I probably won't complete an album, but win in the sense that one of those three songs is really good.
-
Yeah, at this point I'm boned.
I'll definitely continue to try to record an album by myself, but no way am I gonna get it done before November 30.
-
Damn I'd have done this if I'd known about it sooner. Why do all the "creativity competitions" take place in November? I'm not doing National Novel Writing Month, but if I was there's no way I could do both. I'll try it in January.
-
Ugh, I totally agree. November is probably the worst month to do this kind of thing next to maybe, December. I'd have loved to do this, but I've been so goddamn busy it's ridiculous.
-
Guys, there's three entire days left. That's 72 hours. There's no way you can spend an entire seventy two hours working, eating, sleeping and pooping. You can easily get this done by the deadline, even if you started froms scratch right now.
-
I'm home from college, meaning that for 72 hours the only musical instruments I have in my parents' house are a Yamaha keyboard and a Guitar Hero drumkit, and I'm without my Tascam 424. Talk about an exercise in futility, I'm not musical Macguyver!
-
So make some instruments! You can thump and scrape and tap things and they make noises!

we should do another one of those "make an album in a day" things again. some really good stuff came out of that contest; stuff that i still have on my iPod and actually listen to, to this day.
anyway, my suggestion is maybe a two day limit sometime near the end of December/beginning of January because that's when many people have work/school off so more people could probably get in on it. what do you guys think?

I would be down for this in late December, as I get the last week off (yay university job).

I already decided that's happening. Dan died, so progress on the blog has been pretty slow. Y'know, dead hands and all that. I haven't thought of a catchy title yet, but the rules are gonna pretty much the same as ever. "One album. One 24 hour period."
I'll make a thread for it when we get into december. At this rate, the December challenge will be complete before the blog for the annual May challenge is even posted...
This time, the rules won't be quite as strict, y'know, with the "half hour to be eligible" thing. The title is changing from "24Hour Albums" to "24Hour Records" so any submissions can be as long or as short as you want. Coincidentally, 24Hour Records is also the name of the record label I'm in the process or setting up. This time the challenge will have multiple admins with clear instructions so the thing doesn't just 'end' if I disappear and stop giving instructions.
For those of you who missed the first one, 15 people took up the challenge and completed it to different degrees. Two people took up the challenge twice. It totalled over 8 hours of material. Most of the entries will be uploaded to the "24Hour Records" blog for these contest which will hopefully make its appearance as soon as Dan rises from the grave and finishes the template.

I would be down again this time, and actually try and finish whatever I make.
