I'm setting a goal.
I'm going to sleep with Blake Schwarzenbach when he is on tour.
i'm a straight man, and i'd probably still do that!
-
Man, isn't "Sea Foam Green" everyone's favourite Jawbreaker song?
-
I've been listening to "Housesitter" on repeat for like twenty minutes thinking about your post and it is pretty much spot on. Back when I first heard that song it actually took me quite a few listens before I realised that he was singing it to himself. I like how it starts off seeming somewhat sarcastic and maybe even a little flippant but then the real bile starts to come out at about the lines you quoted in your post. I think there is a certain subtlety to Blake Schwarzenbach's songwriting that a lot of people don't recognise because the lyrics are pretty simple and direct.

Ah, I really don't like Dear You. I don't understand where that record fits at all. How did they go from 24hr Revenge Therapy (their sole LP which can be considered truly great) to their creative peak ('Housesitter', 'Sea Foam Green') to that piece of over-produced, under-written nonsense record in such a short space of time? Then immediately afterwards they were writing great songs like the aforementioned 'Esme Needs Her Story', 'Gemini', 'Shirt' and 'Elephant'. Take Dear You out of the discography and you'd never know it was missing. It doesn't fit!
I dunno man, i think a lot Dear You is an extension of some of the poppier stuff from 24HRT like Boxcar and Boat Dreams from the Hill. and the few songs i've heard from Unfun (yeah, i'm waiting til the reissue to get it) were kinda poppy. if anything, Bivouac and the darker songs on 24HRT were an excursion away from what they were doing otherwise. and i wouldn't call it under-written, if anything it's far more focused. as much as i love Bivouac and 24HRT, there are a few songs on each that just labour over the same ideas, or don't really go anywhere. they're not bad, but they don't hold my attention like their counterparts on Dear You.
i'm biased because Dear You is the first one i heard, and i still think Accident Prone is one of the most amazing songs ever recorded, but i think it's a great record. can you imagine if that'd been the album to hit it huge instead of Dookie?

I would say on a scale from one to jealous, I am hella jealous.
-
Yeah I wish Tania would write on my facebook wall too.
-
Maybe I am just that repulsive.

I was pretty stoked when I heard about this. Me and my friend did not believe the band was actually called Thorns of Life until he came out and said it, I think, on facebook or something. He really does love his Shelly.
-
Also, I found this on some site that found it on punknews:
"Blake is said to have written via Facebook that “I can say only that it’s loud and tender and we’re called the Thorns Of Life. whether it’s more Jetsesque or Breaker-like I honestly don’t know; It sounds like a storehouse of fond hatred from the last few years and in the now.”"
-
Alright I know this is a pretty old thread but I feel like this is news needed to be said.
Thorns of Life is over and the alleged album that was released doesn't exist. At least that's what Blake says, a few phone recordings and a tape is all there is.
But he apparently has a new band called "forgetters" (in his words "no 'the', no capital 'f'"). I'm pretty bummed that Thorns of Life didn't pan out seeing as how there was a lot of rumours towards the end. Hell the wikipedia page had a tracklist, album art even.
No links since it was a series of Facebook comments, oh well... For him this is enough I guess.

I'm okay with this. Half those songs sucked anyway and it was never going to be something you chose to listen to instead of Jawbreaker. Blake Schwarzenbach happened, y'know? Greatness achieved and everything. He doesn't owe us anymore music, he can do whatever he wants now.
-
Damn, Blake has a good eye for drummers lately.
-
I'm okay with this.
combetus...
-
Man, I remember when Boxcar was like my favourite song.
Good times.
-
If he returned to music I thought he'd come back as a folkster or something.

Man I got all excited because I thought something new might have been heard on the schwarzenbach front.
(you should keep posting an such. i like when you do that.)
-
Hey, you survived!
-
Hey guys, what's up?
I'm still alive. kinda.

So Thorns of life fizzled but we now have this to look forward to getting bootlegs from and cry about when we realized that there will never ever be a official album from. http://www.bohemian.com/citysound/?p=2251
