As you might expect, the remake's already in the works. I can't remember who has the rights, but I seem to recall it wasn't someone abjectly terrible. Still, the remake's said to push the "bullied kid" angle a lot harder than the original. It's to take place in Littleton, home of Columbine high school.

I saw it at the Melbourne International Film Festival this year. It was disappointing and occasionally bizarre, but not in a good way.

Good film if you want a fairly gratuitous close-up of a prepubescent girl's crotch, though.

From what I've read it's Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield who is attached to direct, although I may have read that on Wikipedia, so, you know.

Theory question.  Are vamps suppose to be able to have kids in this or was she turned early?  Just curious since, mythological theory is a tiny hobby of mine.  If theories aren't thought out well I tend to hate the stories.  Though, if it is good the synopsis isn't doing it justice on the web site.  It makes it sound like an 'A' typical 'good vamp' story.

As far as I know, the origins of the girl in the movie aren't meaningfully explored.

The little girl's a vampire, her dad (at least we assume it's her dad) isn't. Her dad looks after her and she stays at home. How she became a vampire is never explained.

These statements apply to the film only; I haven't read the book.

Oh, I remembered something else important about this movie.

The little boy in it has the worst hair-style in the history of cinema:

You were saying?

This looks pretty good; I suppose I'll go and judge for myself.

Why is Hollywood remaking a movie that hasn't even come out yet? Sad as fuck industry..

Hey if the "original" is unexpectedly delayed from release and the "remake" comes out first does that make the "remake" the "original" and the "original" the "remake"

It has come out.  It's been out for a couple weeks.  My roommate saw it the other day, and has said it's excellent.  I'm quite looking forward to seeing it in the near future.  Unfortunately, the only place where it's playing here right now has it with French subtitles, and my French isn't in such good shape, though I should be able to follow well enough.

So this movie isnt called Twilight?
Title: Re: A vampire romance
Post by: Telea-Rose on 07 Dec 2008, 00:29
Definitely in Swedish.

I think I'll be skipping it considering the whole in swedish thing.  American vamp movies tend not to pop out at you, but I don't trust any other countries not to.  I watched the orphanage earlier this semester and was kinda grumpy afterwards.  The whole set the mood thing was done impeccably and then that stupid kid popped out! Gah!  Freakin myself out just thinking about it.

So this movie isnt called Twilight?
Thus, why Twilight isn't mentioned yet.  I'm sorry, but Twilight is no where near the best vampire book ever writen and I think a little less hype would be nice.  It's like if some celeb found QC and you had thousand's mob this place, telling you about how Jeph grew up with them.  *shudders* Don't get me wrong Twilight isn't the worst vamp novel ever, but its comparing a five year old's rendition of Violets are Blue to some of the old arabic poetry.

Telea-Rose.  You won't see it because it is in Swedish?  You don't think American horror type movies use the pop-out at you scare technique?  I have to say, this isn't making me think highly of your observational skills or your taste in movies.
Title: Re: A vampire romance
Post by: Telea-Rose on 07 Dec 2008, 12:16
American horror movies don't use nearly as good of set-ups to the pop out.  The only American that has freaked me out with movies is M. Night Shyamalan.  All the other American horror films I've seen have been boring.  I'm just really not very interested in Horror movies anyway.  They either scare me, which I can get easily by visiting with my one brother; or they bore me.  And its not just that it's semi-horror.  It's also cause I'm lazy, cheap, and have enough things to rant about sucking.  Plus, I'm more in the mood for weres.

Actually I like subtitles.  They're very useful and are generally on when I watch things.

I think M. Night Shyamalan movies are scary.

The only scary thing about M. Night's movies is that somewhere, someone is stupid enough to keep pouring money into them.

Respectfully, I disagree. While to old hands like you or me having four people in a row quote you to "humourous" effect can seem silly or teasing at worst, to someone who's new to the forum and who might not yet understand the dynamic and memes/traditions of this place it could easily come off as intimidating, aggressive and hostile.

Imagine the following non-internet scenario: you're hanging out with a bunch of people you've known for ages. You say something the group regards as a bit stupid. One of your friends says "Nice one, idiot."  Everyone laugha and you cop it sweet because you've known all these people for so long that you know none of them actually think you're an idiot, and hey, next time it'll probably be someone else's turn to be the butt of the joke.

Now, imagine a similar situation, except this time you're the new person, and you're hanging out with a group of people, all of whom have known each other for ages. You don't really know any of them, they don't really know you. Maybe it's a party, and you're trying to mingle and meet new people. You say something stupid. One of the people says "Nice one, idiot." The others all laugh.

Can you see the difference between those two situations?

Yeah, I see what you mean. I'll try and keep that in mind in the future. It's easy to misdirect or misinterpret things online because of the lack of expression.

(P.S.: Telea-Rose, please don't read my hypothetical situations above and think I'm implying you "said something stupid". I was just making up an example off the top of my head.)
Title: Re: A vampire romance
Post by: Telea-Rose on 08 Dec 2008, 10:44
I really don't mind because I know that the post that caused this wouldn't sound interesting or beneficial to some people.  I'm into critiquing and talking about different techniques in movies.  I think if they were into that they would have gotten a bit more of how that was actually a convo starter.  I was also just trying to reword that I wasn't ignoring the movie all together just because of sub tittles since, I do like them.

*edit* That's not to say I don't like you sticking up for me! It is always nice to have a little backing when you're new to a group.
Title: Re: A vampire romance

But yeah.  To my knowledge, this movie isn't supposed to be super scary.  Apparently the trailer has played up the spooky part of it a lot in order to try and sell it as a horror film.  So don't expect to be super freaked out if you go!

Title: Re: A vampire romance
Post by: Inlander on 08 Dec 2008, 16:43
Yeah, the film's not scary. It is occasionally horrifying, but that's not the same thing. Mainly it's about a little boy who's in love with a little girl. That the little girl chooses to reciprocate this affection by dismembering people is, shall we say, a "quirk".
Title: Re: A vampire romance
Post by: Siibillam-Law on 08 Dec 2008, 17:03
Sounds good so far

I like the style of it. "occasionally horrifying". Kind of reminds me when I watched Tale of Two Sisters, which wasn't really scary, but it sort of was, if you know what I mean

Great movie. And to all the people detracting on it for being Swedish or subtitled give it a chance 1st before dissing it.

Only thing I have to agree on is them showing a childs junk but I'm sure they had to have a double stand-in for that one cuz seriously is no way they would allow that to be taped. Even then it happens so quick that you barely notice it. Too be honest not even sure why they showed it all in the 1st place.

Definitiely one of the better Vampire movies out there. Not scary at all but sometimes gory but in a good way nothing too over-the-top.

And if want to see it now can goto http://www.watch-movies.net/movies/let_the_right_one_in/
I suggest signing up and just paying the fee if you want to watch it all at once.

:Spoiler Edit:

Ok after reading the boards on IMDB I can now see why they showed the prepubescent groin shot. Seems that in the book Eli is a boy that is castrated. The shot basically shows the scarring left over from that. Now what gets me is that I thought it was pubic hair but then again the shot happens so quickly its really hard to tell wtf it might be. So i have to retract my statement earlier about not knowing why they even included the shot in the film.

So the consensus here seems to be "intriguing, but sub par"? That's interesting, because everything I've heard/read about this movie has suggested that it's one of the years best movies. I'm kind of ambivalent about it..I was considering driving to Milwaukee to see it when it plays there, but it's sounding here like it might not be worth it.

Seriously. It's been on a fairly large number of "best of..." lists of fairly reputable establishments (and also among numerous writers at that great pop culture compendium, the A.V. club.)
