Title: QC Listravaganza 2008!
Post by: michaelicious on 30 Nov 2008, 22:25
So it's December again which means it's time to start finalising your lists so you can post them in list threads on the internet that no one reads! I thought it was appropriate to start a new thread because it would just be more special this way.

I thought we could do something fun and instead of just listing your top 10 albums, list other things too! Mine are pretty uncreative, but feel free to be as creative as you want. I ain't buggin'.

My year in lists:

Top 10 Albums:
1. Parts & Labor - Receivers - "Fuck yeah, motherfucker!" are pretty much the only thoughts that cross my mind when this album is playing. Adding Sarah Lipstate on guitar was a smart move. Every song is anthemic and noisy and amazing. This album sounds like it is from the future.
2. Women - Women - Probably one of the best debut albums I have ever heard. This album is weird. It's got poppy little gems like "Group Transport Hall" then when you start to get comfortable they get all US Maple like "January 8th". These dudes pretty much killed live too.
3. Times New Viking - Rip It Off - I know some people can't seem to get past how lo-fi this album is, but once you get used to having tinnitus this album is amazing! This album is so catchy and emphatic and sincere and wonderful from start to finish.
4. Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea - I think this is my new favourite Jews album. It's so well put-together and they seem like they are having a lot of fun!
5. The New Year - The New Year - These jerks never disappoint me. Another beautiful, understated record from the Messrs. Kadane.
6. Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane - Chad VanGaalen has always made interesting albums, but this is his first album that is a truly great album. It's focused and well-paced and most of these songs are catchy as hell.
7. Laura Barrett - Victory Garden - This album is so strange and inviting. The main istrument is the kalimba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalimba)! That might seem like it's gimmicky but no way, man. Laura plays it with such skill - you might even venture to say virtuosity - that it's never boring. Her voice is dreamy and comforting like a lullabye.
8. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lied Down in the Light - I don't wanna live to see the day when Will Oldham releases an album that doesn't make my top 10.
9. Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer - I never thought that this album would make my list because I kinda hated it at first. I am glad because there was a time in my life when I would have said Wolf Parade was my favourite band.
10. Futureheads - This Is Not the World - A lot of people didn't like this album, but fuck them. This album is great! It's catchy, the guitars sound awesome, some of the songs sound like classic Futureheads while others move forward to a poppier direction.

Top 5 EPs:
1. Maps & Atlases - You and Me and the Mountain
2. Times New Viking - Stay Awake
3. Bottomless Pit - Congress
4. You Were Always - Ghost Lanes
5. Hooded Fang - Hooded Fang

Top 10 Songs:
1. Women - Group Transport Hall/Shaking Hands
2. Maps & Atlases - You and Me and the Mountain
3. Parts & Labor - Nowheres Nigh
4. Times New Viking - R.I.P. Allegory
5. Futureheads - Radio Heart
6. Wolf Parade - The Grey Estates
7. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - For Every Field There's a Mole
8. Born Ruffians - Barnacle Goose
9. Chad VanGaalen - Bare Feet on Wet Griptape
10. Jenny Lewis - See Fernando

Best Album Art:
You Were Always - Ghost Lanes (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/jesusvsthepolice/ghostlanes.jpg)
Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/jesusvsthepolice/lookoutmountainlookoutsea.jpg)

Awesome albums from 2007 I didn't hear until 2008:
1. Animal Names - Ballet Bones
2. Bowerbirds - Hymn for a Dark Horse
3. Look Mexico - This Is Animal Music
4. Kickball - Everything Is a Miracle Nothing Is a Miracle Everything Is
5. Germans - Cape Fear
6. Antelope - Reflector
7. Bodies of Water - Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink (even though I think it was actually a reissue and the album came out in 2006 originally)
8. Akron/Family - Love Is Simple
9. Amiina - Kurr

i don't get the amount of people saying that 2008 was a bad year for music, or they've not heard anything they like (not necessarily you guys that have posted, just in general, from who i've spoken to and seen posted on other forums).  personally, i've been spoiled for choice this year.  i'll post a few lists on here tomorrow if i get a chance, i'm about to head out atm.

THE RUNTS OF THE 2008 LITTER...
Some albums I've enjoyed, but for whatever reason (usually its the case that I have to "be in the right mood" for them, which isn't an insult, just how it is), haven't recieved enough listenage to warrant making my top 30.  Given more time, some would probably have made the top 30.  Here they are, in no order of preference:

36 Crazyfists - "The Tide and Its Takers"
The Ascent of Everest - "How Lonely Sits the City"
The Automatic - "This Is a Fix"
Cheap Girls - "Find Me a Drink Home"
Cult of Luna - "Eternal Kingdom"

Fucked Up - "The Chemistry of Common Life"
The Gutter Twins - "Saturnalia"

Thrice - "The Alchemy Index Vols. 3 & 4: Air & Earth"

A YEAR LATE...!
My Top 10 of kickass records from 2007 which I meant to check out at the time, but only actually got around to picking up this year.

9.  Rosetta - "Wake/Lift"
10. Attack in Black - "Marriage"

BAND OF THE YEAR AWARD:  The Gaslight Anthem
All three of their records have made my lists in some form another this year, and they're one of the few bands that are truly living up to all the hype they're getting.
RUNNER-UP: Glass and Ashes - They weren't my album of the year for nothing!  And they've broken up, at least for the time being, which sucks.

BEST ALBUM ARTWORK:  Blacklisted - "Heavier than Heaven, Lonelier than God"
Just epic.  And sums up the feel of the album its title amazingly.
RUNNER-UP: Clouds - "We are Above You" - Is that a tall pile of pancakes with syrup!?  *MOVES CLOSER* ...Wait, no it's a menacing-looking tower with tentacles growing out of it. Nice!
N.B. Torche's album might have got in here, were it not for the fact that it's damn near impossible to get the foldy-out-bits back in the case without damaging them!

CUNTRAG OF THE YEAR AWARD:   William Control
Yep, that over-dramatic vocally-talentless goth gimp from Aiden has started a solo project that, somehow, is even worse than his day-job.  Dodgy electro-goth-pop drivel that no-one should have to hear.
RUNNER-UP:   Ollie Sykes of Bring Me the Horizon - His band are terrible enough, but now all of a sudden I can't open up a magazine without seeing his gormless mug staring back at me, advertising his shit dayglo clothing company.

THE "WTF?!" AWARD:  Sigur Rós, for the "Gobbledigook" video
Apparently that's how shit goes down in Iceland.  Pretty cool!
RUNNER-UP:  Tom Gabel - Tom, I love your songs, but WTF were you thinking when you put that drum machine in there?!

Cynic - Traced In Air
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/38/Traced_In_Air_Cover.jpg)

Everything else was SHIT in comparison, even Opeth.

Okay, I'm just too lazy to compile everything into lists, plus I only listened to maybe 16 or 17 releases, not enough to truly have a "best of", since everything was quite good.

Top 10 Albums

No particular order though. Too hard, too many styles.

Klmit 1918 - Just in case we'll never meet again
Jesu - Why are we not perfect
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
The Presets - Apocalypso
Russian Circles - Station
Supercontinent  - Vaalbara
Women - Women
The Grates  - Teeth Lost, Hearts Won
Dungen - 4
Emiliana Torrini - Me and Armini

This is a list of albums I've listened to and were tagged as 2008 in my itunes library. I have somewhere around 100 albums I'm yet to listen to, many from this year.

Favourite person by a long way is a guy who calls himself Mogwai, who runs the thesirenssound.com blog. This has been the main source of my musical enjoyment this year.

My "why did I not know of these guys years ago" pick is, by a fucking mile, Mono.
They last released an album in 2006 (but are working on one now) and make absolutely beautiful music.

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Drippers

I probably could have tried a little harder but most of the other new music i listned to this year, although good, wasn't really top-ten material. then again i could be forgetting something crucial since my iPod broke last week and i lost all my music.

Man, I was so disappointed with that MONO DVD. It just didn't do it for me. And I love that band and their live shows so much. Even seeing myself in the DVD wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. On a much more positive note, they have a new album coming out on Temporary Residence in March. It features an orchestra on 75% of it and is surely going to be amazing. It's 7 tracks, only two of which are under 10 minutes and I'm already predicting it to be epic and wonderful and on my '09 'Albums of the Year' list.

Anyway...lets try some lists I guess. I might do best/favorite songs later but...probably not.

Albums of the Year

30. Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom

Shows of the Year

11. Jeffrey Lewis and the Jackles at The Root Cellar, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
10. Mount Eerie w/ Julie Doiron and Calm Down it's Monday at Bard Hall, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
9. Sigur Ros at the Grand Ballroom, NY
8. Clues w/ Elfin Saddle and Ramona Cordova at SMOG, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
7. Thee Silver Mt. Zion.... w/ Vic Chestnut and someone else whom I forget at The First Unitarian Church, PA

2. Stars with Bell X1 at the Trocadero, PA
1. Stars of the Lid w/ Hammock at Le Poisson Rouge, NY

Best Music Blogs of the Year
(for me anyway, and in terms of being sources for music)
3. Victory Rose http://victoryrosemusic.blogspot.com/
The Sigur Ros fanboy in me forced me to put this on the list. Dozens of super high quality, remastered live SR shows from the band's entire run thus far. Lotsa rarities and cool stuff. Also a fair amount of stuff from other bands. Live recordings, all great quality, by MONO, EitS, The Books, Low and more.

2. Beautifull Noise http://beautifullnoise.blogspot.com/
Pretty self explanatory. Lots of pretty, epic and awesome electronic, "post-rock" and so on

1. Left out in Left Field http://pavidsson.blogspot.com/
Unfortunately all the back content was recently removed but, before that happened, this blog served as an endless source of brilliant new and old ambient, drone, electronic, experimental and found sound albums. Really, it was my Mecca.

Best Things I discovered Musically This Year (a short list. I sort of stuck to my guns this year):
2. "Hardcore" music of various kinds
I used to blow off anything with screaming/growling/roaring/ect. vocals as not worth my time. Luckily I've seen the light and found joy in bands like Meshugga, Converge, Envy, Genghis Tron, Amanda Woodward and plenty of others. It's intense, cathartic and honestly, in the right mood, intensely enjoyable.
1. Jazz
This was the year I really started listening to jazz and collecting old jazz LPs. There's a huge used record store near my house that is literally overflowing with cheap, awesome jazz records, almost all in great condition. I've spent hours searching through bins, buying random stuff, and playing it endlessly on my record player and I couldn't be happier. I feel like I'm taking a sort of logical step but in the opposite direction in that I've been listening to lots of music clearly inspired/grounded in certain jazz sensibilities for a long time (notably, for example, The Drift and Bohren and the Club of Gore) but hadn't too deeply explored jazz itself. Well, I'm glad that's changed!

EDIT:
More stuff

Most listened to artists of the year (not the best necessarily)
10. Explosions in the Sky
9. MONO
8. Stars
7. Stars of the Lid
6. Do Make Say Think
5. Okkervil River
4. Eluvium
3. Tarentel
2. The Drift
1. Sigur Ros

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

I need to go back and listen to this again. I remember at first listen I was like "Oh FUCK yeah, that is some enormous guitar sound" and then I forgot about it. And now when I go listen to it I stop paying attention and I'm like "Fuck this, I want some Weezer instead."

dude do it.

Jack White does some really cool guitar things this time around. particularly, the solo in "the switch and spur" and the psychedelic/slide thing he does in "hold up"

good shit.

Hah! My top ten most listened songs of '08 (according to Last.FM) are kind of ridiculous.

1. "Transmission" - Joy Division
2. "Dead Souls" - Joy Division
3. "Ceremony" - Joy Division
4. "Disorder" - Joy Division
4. (a tie) "New Dawn Fades" - Joy Division
the last five are all tied
6. "Naki Kyoku" - Boris
6. "The Only Mistake" - Joy Division
6. "Candidate" - Joy Division
6. "These Days" - Joy Division

A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
Daturah - Reverie
This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You
That TVonR once I get to listening it
That Helios album once I get to listening to it
Sigur Ros - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
That Up C Down C Left C Right C ABC + Start album once I get to listening to it
Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader

Man, Sigur Ros. I like their music. I like the Icelandic language. I even like the gibberish Jonsi spouts when he gets bored with regular old Icelandic (I assume the guy is CONSTANTLY just saying shit because that is the only way I can imagine getting sick of such an amazing-sounding language).

Fuck trying to read Sigur Ros song titles though. "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust"? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT, GUYS, HOW DO YOU SAY IT

2: Brokencyde
Peanut Butter and Jelly are two of the most unlikely partners yet put together, they make sense. Screamo and Crunk? Yeah motherfucking right.

3: Complete
Three words: HOOOOOOOOOOOOOGIE. BOOOOOOOOOOGIE. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND.

I think I may have mentioned it on this forum before (definitely have on the PRF), but one of my best friends buys drugs from Chuggo.  He got a copy of the entire album for free.  Immortal Technique guests on it!

Appartently Chuggo also owns some illegal after-hours clubs and things.

Why, low quality of bands chosen?

Also that Up C album is not on my list at all anymore. It's a solid release but it is just not that good. With all the praise I've heard about it I thought it would be like, their first album times 10 or something.

Okay fine I can make a list.

Top 10 albums that I only really started listening to this year but are actually older:
1. The Beatles - Revolver
2. Gotye - Like Drawing Blood (no kidding, one of the best things I've heard in 5 years)
3. Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
4. The Band - The Band
5. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
6. Runrig - The Highland Connection (the production is mostly shit on this album and fuck Runrig's old drummer, but still very good and worth listening to if only for "The Twenty-Five Pounder" alone)
7. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West ("Cowboy Dan" fuck yesss)
8. Modest Mouse - The Moon And Antarctica
9. Cake - Prolonging The Magic
10. Merle Haggard - 16 Biggest Hits (sue me, it's a Greatest Hits compilation, but it's worth losing elitist hipster cred)

7. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West ("Cowboy Dan" fuck yesss)

I've always been sure this was their best album. Convincing other people of this is exceedingly difficult and I never quite got why. Sure, "The Moon..." is a great album but it really fails to capture the intensity and energy of TLCW on a lot of levels. And yeah, Cowboy Dan is awesome (and even better live since they usually finish it with a crazy improv jam and it's so awesome). Point is, any year that you can get into this album is a good year musically, as far as I'm concerned.

On an unrelated note, I wish I hadn't forgotten that m83 album either. It's definitely great.

That's odd, all the people I know who have listened to Modest Mouse longer than "Float On" pretty much agree they peaked with LCW and it's been a steady downhill ride since then.

2. Double Nickels On The Dime by Minutemen

5. Entertainment! by Gang Of Four

i srsly cannot believe no one else has even mentioned m83

what is wrong with you people

Ehhhhh. Doesn't do it for me.

Okay, here goes:

Top five albums
1. Dungen - 4
It's grown on me SO much in the past few weeks that it's not even funny. I can't get "Det Tar Tid" out of my head, and I don't consider that a bad thing

2. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Fuck you guys, I liked it. I'm not even sure why I like it, but I do.

3. Sigur Ros - that thing with the long name
It seems so different from Takk... and everything before it, but it also comes off so right.

4. Boris - Smile (both versions)
It's Boris. Nuff said. I only wish they'd found a way to fit "Floor Shaker" in (it's on the new live album and the "Statement" single).

5.Everybody Out! s/t
Easily the best punk rock album in five years. Chris Sweeney from Dead Pets and Rick Barton, ex-Dropkick Murphys. It's fun, raucous, and old-school as fuck.

Honorable mention:
Hanggai - Introducing Hanggai
Dunno who put this in the mediaf!re thread, but THANK YOU. "Wuji" is another one of those songs that refuses to leave my head.

Top fivesix shows
1. Everybody Out! (Newbury Comics, Braintree MA)
75 kids jammed into a record store, birthday cake and punk rock. Well worth the time spent on the Red Line and the taxi fares. Plus Newby's had 25% off all vinyl. I made out quite well that day. I think I actually got a MGMT single on white vinyl for free. Cool.

2. Fu Manchu/Burning Brides/Some band with a white dude with dreads (Middle East downstairs, Cambridge MA)
The most fun I've had at a show in a long time. The first band..I can't remember, but they weren't too good. Burning Brides ripped, and the Fu played their normal fuzzy-as-fuck rock until about 1:30.

3. Dropkick Murphys/Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (Tsongas Arena, Lowell MA, evening show)
The crowd wasn't into TL at all, but they played a fuck of a set, ending with a Stiff Little Fingers cover. Dropkick were Dropkick, and it was St. Paddy's week. Pretty awesome. Shame about the crowd, though.

4. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks/John Vanderslice (Mass MoCA, North Adams MA)
MoCA brings one good show to my town a year, and this was it. I love Vanderslice, and Malkmus absolutely tore the place apart with his set.. Plus, I finally got to see the drumming greatness of Janet Weiss live.

5. Dropkick Murphys/Everybody Out!/Big D & The Kids Table (Tsongas Arena, Lowell MA, afternoon show)
I think Dropkick played a better set this show than they did in the evening. The crowd was better, too. This was the first time I'd seen or heard Everybody Out!, and I pretty much fell in love after the first song. Big D were nigh horrid. I think the singer was stoned off his ass, or at least it seemed like it. This ranks lower than the evening show only because I like TL/Rx more than Everybody Out!.

6. Bill Chapman Trio (Cup and Saucer, North Adams, MA)
Live jazz with breakfast the first Sunday of every month. Can you complain about that? Nope.

Shane's "that guitar sounds awesome" bits of the year
1. Amon Amarth - "Varyags of Mikklagaard" (1:38-2:25)
The riff is awesome, then they get all harmonizing and shit, repeat the intro..mmm.

2. The Sword - "The Sundering" (0:31-0:39)
I like the run at the end, it almost sounds like the whole thing is just falling apart.

EPs/singles/whatnot of the year
1. Sebastian Grainger & The Mountains - American Names
2. Boris - Statement 7"
3. Lagwagon - I Think My Older Brother Used To Listen To Lagwagon
4. Polymaths - So Long, Castle Road
5. Jay Reatard/Deerhunter split
6. Nadja - Long Dark Twenties

This was my view for a very long time, but as of recent days I'm actually starting to prefer Building Nothing. It could just be my mental state, or it could be that every single fucking song on that record is two steps past brilliant.

Top (Metal) albums of 2008 because I hardly listen to listen to anything besides metal, in alphabetical order by artist and also including my parenthesized opinions of each:

After the Burial - Rareform (8-string guitars play polymetric metal with hardcore influences)
Archons - The Consequences of Silence (somebody's been listening to Quo Vadis...)
Arsis - We Are the Nightmare (better than United in Regret, not as good as A Celebration of Guilt or A Diamond For Disease, but still really solid)
As Eden Burns - The Great Celestial Delusion (shredtastic but still tasteful Lone Star melodic death)
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery (one of the more solid brutal death releases from this super group)
Before the Dawn - Soundscape of Silence (great progressive melodeath)
Cynic - Traced in Air (CYNIC)
Daylight Dies - Lost to the Living (makes you sad and stuff)
Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds (holy shit tech-death release of '08)
Eluveitie - Slania (makes me feel like I'm at a metal renaissance festival)
Embrace the End - Ley Lines (tech metal with heavy punk/hardcore influences)
Evergrey - Torn (better than their previous - super solid prog/power/groove/gothenberg)
The Faceless - Planetary Duality (amazing tech-death concept album about inter-dimensional beings)
Fellsilent - The Hidden Words (polymetric Meshuggah worship with more melody)
Genghis Tron - Board Up the House (best electrogrindcore (yeah i made this label up) album of 08? yessir)
Gojiria - The Way of the Flesh (groovy french metalles)
Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception (my favorite brutal death album is from these italianos)
Keep of Kalessin - Kolossus (best progressive black metal album about battling gods of '08)
Mirrorthrone - Gangrene (best one-man-band release this year - sounds like there's twenty people playing stuff at once)
Misery Signals - Controller (probably my favorite-est album of 08 - i uploaded this in the mediaf!re thread along with my semi-extended views on this)
Moonspell - Night Eternal  (best black/gothic album, 'Scorpion Flower' is probably  the catchiest song I've heard this year)
Opeth - Watershed (OPETH, complete with jammin organ solos)
Prey for Nothing - Violence Divine (best Israeli melodic death debut album of 08)
Septic Flesh - Communion (best 'I've never heard this band before this album but this shit is awesome' album of the year - super atmospheric greek metal)
Serpentcult - Weight of Light (female fronted DOOM. I think they tune to F# or something. Makes your hair stand up from being so low)
Stormlord - Mare Nostrum (best nautically themed metal album)
Textures - Silhouettes (if meshuggah actually put songwriting first and we're really good at it, this is what they would sound like)
Veil of Maya - The Common Man's Collapse (groovin rifftastic polymetric album of 08)

I forgot that possibly the best show I saw in '08 was at the Church of Paul the Apostle in NYC where Gavin Bryars' "Sinking of the Titanic," John Adams' "Christian Zeal and Activity" and Johnny Greenwood's "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" were performed (the latter most in its American debut). It was a pretty much perfect show. It was also my introduction to "Sinking of the Titanic" which was mesmerizing live, especially since the old church pews were creaking as people moved and shifted slightly in their seats, adding to the whole effect (conjuring a sinking ship) in an incredible way. "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" was brilliant as well. At one extended point all the violinists and violists held their instruments like guitars and strummed away with incredible intensity, the most unusual yet coolest use of pizzicato I've ever seen. I've never seen an orchestra used to such an effect in person before. Witnessing the transformation of a group of acoustic instruments into a gorgeous, humming, mechanical sounding white noise machine is a pretty fantastic experience to be sure.
