.....how can a web comic that features a sentient PC and IPod, and had a chick with a transforming scooter ever jump the shark, especially when featuring a loose bear. A bear that seemed very friendly (escaped from a zoo, very plausible) walking around in the park isn't shark jumping at all.
Also, I want to hug it. I want a shirt with the bear. Just the bear, eating a sammich. That would be delightful

for the record i would like to clarify that while yes, i do believe this strip is the result of hallucinogens, improperly used prescription medicine or alcohol (or some combination of the three) i do not feel that the strip has jumped any seaborne carnivore.
but i would like to point out again....

In Jeph's defense, heck, I lived in Easthampton for a few years (the town immediately south of Noho and in which he lives himself). A black bear went through my front yard once, about seven minutes drive from the small park Penny and the geek are having their picnic.
Not that that conflates to a grizzly in Pulaski Park, 20 miles from the nearest zoo (and which is on the wrong side of the Connecticut River), but what the heck.

I think that denigrating bears for being bears would classify a person as being speciesist-- mocking another species.
For anybody who is interested in a more positive view of bears, the story Bears Discover Fire (http://www.amazon.com/Bears-Discover-Fire-Other-Stories/dp/0312890354), in the collection of the same name by Terry Bisson is amusing.

Bears seem already pretty well armed, actually. Nice big, hairy ones, with claws and all.
Like I said in WTC, Jeph will have to go pretty far out to jump the Shark, fantasy/weird happenings-wise. I'm not even sure that shift to Gilligan's island I mentioned would do it. No way can a bear in the park push QC behind the speedboat. BJ and the Bear, maybe. Or maybe not.
While writing this it occurred to me why that show may never, ever be remade into a movie.

koalas are marsupials, not bears. besides they're small and fluffy... (but they can kick ass too!)

Haha! Good point. I was just trying to make the point that if the bear was soft and cuddly(are there any bears like that?) then their reaction might have been different. Eventhough in this case the bear looked mean but in actuality it was nice. Appearances can be deceiving. You even helped prove my point of that by pointing out that Koalas can kick ass too

It just occurred to me that the comic never established what happened to the bear. I hope that the zoo people were able to tranquilize and capture it; the other possibility is that it died in a hail of police bullets.
Which would have been a sad end to the bear's life. (Not sure that being an inmate in a travelling zoo is much better, mind you)

I like to think that the bear escaped. It now lives its life on the road, traveling from town to town, doing good deeds in return for delicious sandwiches. Someday it will finally achieve its dream of being the first bear to compete in the Olympics on the moon after attending Harvard and being elected president. And maybe... maybe it will even find true love...
Coming to a theater near you November of 2009.
