Title: The Atlas of True Names
Post by: KvP on 04 Dec 2008, 16:44
Behold, an atlas that reflects the etymological origins of names! (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/3548315/Bizarre-new-atlas-comes-to-the-Great-Land-of-the-Tattooed.html) Sadly, it costs money :( but it's still pretty cool.

Greetings from the Land of the Red Ones!

oh man i would love to know what all the names from my area (Washington State, USA) mean because they are mostly just indecipherable, Native-American gibberish to me.

ah man it's not available on Amazon, I'd order it at the same time as a couple other things I've had my eye on.

My dad lives near St. Littlefrank. And it doesn't appear on the map, but I live in the Land of Eagles.

(fuck you, Internet, I wanted to find an etymological origin for Tirana)

yeah, so the town i live in was supposed to be named after william ralston, some railroad guy that financed a lot of projects in california, but he was too modest to have his name put on a town. so some spanish speaking guy said he was 'muy modesto' and so now i live in modesto.

COOL STORY, EH?

It's where Grandaddy came from.

Also I think I'd heard the name around the traps before then.

Hey, someone else from the Central Valley.  I'm originally from Fresno which I believe, though I'm by no means positive, means "Ash Tree" in Spanish.  According to this atlas I'm currently in the Land of the High Serenity

...I don't get why my home is Farmer's Land. That doesn't make sense. Did they see 'Markland' and think it was Scottish? I am offended. And marginalised.

You only count as being 'from' the Central Valley if you have eaten at Luna Pizzeria in Old Town Clovis though.

/born in Fresno

Sometimes I want to move to Modesto (which would only be an hour away right now from Merced, or the City of Mercy) to start a band called Modesto Mouse. I would hire two Modesto musicians and cover Modest Mouse songs.

(God, that's such a stupid joke. Plus I don't even like Modest Mouse.)

Central Valleycon, anyone?

what the hell. where did all these central valley people come from all of a sudden? who are you and why are you not at my house playing rock band with me?

I'm actually from Saint Joseph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_jose), Wide Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_name_California), but I came to Merced to study at the new UWB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California,_Merced). Partly because the others I applied to rejected me.

You probably would, heh. Soon as I get my paycheck deposited (and gifts for the woman bought) I can help with gas. I just hope you can sing on expert, because I feel like getting lots of moneys for each performance so my character won't have to play with a lame-looking guitar. I do not know how to play guitar on anything but expert anymore, I seriously start to fail out on easy because I get bored and lose focus.

(let me warm up on some of the easy songs first though 'cause I haven't played at all since October)

i can most likely sing on expert for some songs, but my range is tight so i'd probably have to drop to hard for songs that go above or below what i can hit comfortably. but i can't say the same about whoever ends up on drums... even medium trips me up once that orange bar thing starts up...

If it's just the three of us, could Jason do bass? Bass is all kinds of fun assuming you have a song that doesn't suck 30 shits.
