Title: Bands you wished you had heard of before they broke up.
Post by: Aurjay on 16 Dec 2008, 22:44
I was reading thru the Archives again and I came across an old newspost where Jeph was talking about how he hated not hearing of some bands before they broke up. I'm not sure if this thread has been done before, but I decided to give it a shot.

Jeph's Choices:  Failure, Castor, My Bloody Valentine, and Don Caballero.

My Choices: The Unicorns, Neutral Milk Hotel, Cibo Matto.

Also I fall into the group/cult that still misses Pavement...

Thankfully, all my current flavors of the month (those being The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Ambulance Ltd.) are still together and I've seen the first two live.

I guess the BJM was broken up for a while but Anton will always get a rowdy bunch of aging hippies together and go on tour every couple of years.

I do wish, however, that I was around to catch those two in their heyday. They're all pushing 45 now and, while this isn't an old age at all, their live shows have suffered as a result. Many simply lose the will to rock the fuck out at that age.

Please don't try and prove me wrong with recent pictures of Pete Townshend or Mick Jagger 'cause they look fucking ridiculous.

Ok, Fugazi too.

Regardless there are a million bands that I love that I will most likely never see live. It makes me feel meh.

One of the first shows I ever saw was Failure.  They played last in a four-band show that also included Sponge (before their MTV hit), Inch (who were awesome), and Rust (who were even more awesome).  At that time, Failure was trying to sound almost exactly like Nirvana, but they were good at it.  Then their next album is Fantastic Planet and suddenly everyone is on their jock because it's all "spacey".

I saw Fugazi in a VFW the size of a large living room in Louisville in '98.  Or maybe '99.  I was paying more attention to my then-new girlfriend than the band, to be honest.

I admit, it is kind of obnoxious. Also, that is not even the worst. You have "TG" and you have "1981" it can be pieced together but of course it is highly unnecessary effort.
Title: Re: Bands you wished you had heard of before they broke up.
Post by: rynne on 17 Dec 2008, 21:22
TG was pretty much the only band here I recognized.  And Jeff Tweedy.  But yeah, all of the others were *right-click, open in new tab*.  Heck, aside from John Schmersal, I don’t even recognize anyone from the Brainiac picture I posted.  I just figured everyone else knew all these folks on sight.

This.  I saw the Wolfmother bit and I was like: "Thank god that's over."  I was bummed when I saw that Be Your Own Pet had kicked it.  :[

Seconding (thirding?) Faraquet.

P.S. - Does anyone actually care about The Format?  I thought they were a bad Built to Spill cover band for a while.  That was only when I had heard "The Compromise" and "Conventional Wisdom" respectively, though.

Unfortunately, Velvet Revolver didn't break up. They just lost their most only talented member - Scott Weiland - assumedly because he got tired of their bullshit.

They still plan to put out second rate cock rock with a different singer.

I'm bummed about Be Your Pet and amused about Phantom Planet.

Yeah, second mclusky but Future of The Left go some way to make up for it. Their live shows are great and they're not too different either.

Also, Page France though the not living in the same country/ on same continent would have made it pretty difficult anyway.

It was such a great divergence from what attracted me to the band, though. Spazzy punk sections punctuated with fantastically obtuse lyrics and dancey noise-rock all crammed together into one song. Then they decided that the direction for their next project should be "nu-disco."

Eh. Different strokes for different folks, I imagine.

Happy to see my thread hit a second page. All choices are great!! I see people are also expanding my orginal concept to include bands that were dead before you were born and so obviously you didn't get a chance to see them before they broke up. My addition to that thought would be to include Robert Johnson. Definitely one of the best blues guitarist of all times and sadly was wayyy before my generation.

"Bad Brains are not 'Still Together' as it implies that the band has been an ongoing affair with no hiatus or breakups, which is not true. They are reformed and currently together, which is not the same thing. They have also been making horrible music for a much longer time than the time they were a good band."

I didn't mention that they were together

Maybe this is crazy talk because of me being terrible at English, but... what?

I meant that as soon as someone mentioned Bad Brains, I was going to say that they'd reformed a few years back - but I also knew someone would point out that they only make shitty music out and it doesn't count. So I meant, I didn't mention they were together in previous posts because of that.

Well I got into them before they broke up, but I never got to see them.
I'm not that young.

All the others I got into after they broke up.

It used to be Rage Against The Machine but they got together again and I caught them live.
Now it's Floyd, Led Zeppelin (not happening in the original setup but what the hell) and J5.

Hello everyone this is my first post lol so be kind... :-), This is a tough one for me, Not to go off topic but it would also have been great to have seen some bands in their prime i.e. The Sex Pistols, But i would have to say....
The Nation of Ulysses, I'm not sure to how many people know about this band, But "Plays Pretty for Baby" is definitely one of those albums changed my life, the kinetic energy and the ideologies (to which this day i still have no clue what they were on about). They just seemed to be on fire all the time, It would be great to hear if anyone from the board might have seen them, I would love to hear what they were like, But yeah that's mine for sure.

The Sex Pistols
Strong first post.

Well i didn't mean the sex pistols in particular, i'm not really a fan. But i'm talking about a band that were probably better to watch in their prime than say they would be now. Like the birthday party for instance i was very lucky to see nick cave this year and it's was amazing, but i can imagine the birthday party would have been alot better back in the day, i'm mean they were insane if you ever get a chance to view some of their performances on youtube it's so dark, meanacing and abhorrent you literally thought cave might kill someone. So yeah perhaps the sex pistols aren't the best example. I would have rather seen Iggy & the Stooges in their prime who to me were more of punk band than the pistols could ever be.

A bunch of friends recently saw Iggy's reunion tour and the verdict was unanimous that Iggy still has it nearly like he did back in the day, but The Stooges are fucking ancient.

Well put it this way man i would rather watch the stooges over alot of these new bands around today, not to say that all modern music is tripe because there are some really exciting things going on right now in music...but alot of it is. And the stooges even past their prime could knock most of these young whipper-snappers off stage. Lol I'm only 20yrs old I sound like a really old man who ranting about the fact that "It's not like it used to be", Anyway i digress.

They were pretty good when I saw em but Iggy's voice is going a bit
That's good to hear man, hope you had a good time yeah i saw them on t.v. awhile back playing the v fest, it weren't that great i think they might just be to jaded to rock it like they oust to, but they've already done enough and have influenced a countless number of bands and hopefully will be remembered in history. P.S. Love the cramps avatar man, Cramps F'in Rock, Hey man have you ever heard of the scientists?

Whoever said blink-182 - I saw them on their last UK tour. They were actually pretty fucking good, considering they were terrible in all the footage I saw of them (which raises the question why I went...)

Your avatar is Nick Cave, and as such I like you.

Neutral Milk Hotel.

I end up hating threads like these because they get me into all this good music I know I'll never see live or will never get any more of.

I dunno, there are so many bands that have broken up then got back together I think you can have some hope.

Any that come to mind are composed of guys who've gained a hundred pounds and have a deeper voice than they did twenty years ago.

Imagine Jeff Mangum fused with the Elton John of today.  Sure, I'll go to the concert, but I'd probably cry tears of sadness for days once past.  If that's hope, I'm fine with seeing the glass half empty...

Maybe the ex members will go on to form just as good bands like Fugazi, Rollins Band, PiL or New Order.

I think I'd actually heard "Blood on our Hands" when the single came out, but I didn't really pay attention.

You are so right about this.  I was lucky enough to see them 3 times between '91 and '93, so I made it just under the wire.  Easily among my top three favorite bands ever.

On the other hand, how many Fugazis are there for every Twilight Singers or Zwan?

Yeah, or Wings?  God, Wings...

Or whatever it is that Robert Plant is doing nowadays.  I think he was tapping on a beaded gourd when I last saw his concert.

Independently, the music was okay, but when you're watching it, you're constantly reminded that it's Robert Fucking Plant.  It's like Jesus got a segment talking about agriculture on Martha Stewart's morning talk show.

It's hard to follow up a past band/act with something completely different, and it's just as hard for the fans of the old stuff.  I can want another NMH album, but it won't happen, even if the band Magner made after NMH was steller.

Twilight Singers are fucking godly. Powder Burns was my album of the year for 2006.

I definitely regret missing out on Pavement, then there's Five Iron Frenzy/Catch 22/The Aquabats. (The Aquabats do not count as still together, they don't even have a brass section anymore. And yes, I know about Streetlight, but aside from Kalnoky, they are actually a very different band.) I also wish I'd been there for some of the hip-hop groups that were actually hip-hop, i.e. De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Redman, Jungle Brothers, so on and so forth. Oh, and Mr. Bungle.

Mansun were pretty good, but because of the NME (somehow the definitive UK authority on music nowadays) calling them too gimmicky they were virtually ignored at a time when Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Blur and the Manics ruled the charts.

Mansun were more than pretty good. Their first two records are brilliant. Blows the shit out of Ocean Colour Scene, for sure.

I believe Conception is the only band I listen to that I wish I had heard of before they broke up. Of course, I don't think they ever managed to get a North American tour while they were active and even their reunion a few years back consisted of a few shows in Norway.
