NEW POST:
New Theme is : "joy"
Original work only!
ORIGINAL POST:
So, I was thinking of ways to encourage myself to do more art. I have this problem where if I'm not given a project, I won't do anything. Then I thought about the creative community here, and that there are at least some people here that kind of feel the same. So I was thinking of making a thread where someone suggests a theme for a current activity. A deadline is created, and by that deadline everyone who wants to submit a piece should have. People can submit multiple pieces, etc. Everyone wins because you've created something new. Then once it's passed, a new theme is suggested. Etc.
Example:
Theme can be something like 'tell a story'. Than you can draw a comic, write a little tale, do a stop motion video, etc etc etc.
The ultimate point would be to encourage the participators to do something extra.
Would there be any takers?
Has this been attempted before? If yes, is anyone down for resurrecting it?
-
I did a similar art challenge a while back. I think I left the forum for a bit before I finished it, and it lagged in participation, unfortunately (probably because I ran it really poorly). You should definitely give it a shot, though, although I think a theme like "tell a story" is too broad (although perhaps my themes were too narrow). My challenge was judged and I was going to send a real prize to the winner but I guess you're not into that?
I would do this starting in a few weeks when my schoolwork slows down.
wow it is always so painful to read my old posts sorry everyone (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,16128.0.html)
-
I am definetly interested in this and think it would be a very good idea :)
-
Well, I didn't want it to be a competition, more like a challenge, hence the not mentioning prizes (plus, I'm poor). The whole point would be for the people who are submitting to try new things, challenge what they can already do, and so on. Having finished the piece itself would be a price type of thing.
The 'tell a story' example was just that, an example. Part of the whole scheme I figured was that people suggest themes, and then one is decided on (I dunno, I guess I could pick one). I kind of liked your suggestion in that topic actually. But I was also thinking of things like 'Design a cover for a metal band'.
... An idea just came in. It could be judged by a board of judges (a bit like the debate thing was organized in Discuss!), and the winner can choose the next theme?
-
Mine was judged by a board of judges, too - and don't take my comment as negative, I only mean to help you if you plan on doing this. I like having the winner choose the next theme, another forum that does a songwriting challenge has it set up like that and it works out really well I think.
-
I'd be down for this. I'm not as musically inclined so I can't particpate in those challenges, but I am artisitcally inclined, to a degree.
Make it happen!
-
Yes, I would like to do this.
It would be cool if we did one of those "start a story, then the next person continues it" thingies
-
Those tell story things work alot better online I think cause in real life, in classes and such they get messed up. I'm definetly up for the tell a story one. cause im not musically inclined in the slightest.
-
i'm in too.
-
Alright, so there does seem to be some willingness to do this (and since I don't think this is an oft frequented part of the forums, it might increase as we get some things done) I recognize this can be a go?
Anyone have any suggestions as to how long between each submission? I was thinking maybe two weeks? This way there's still some time limit, but it should be enough for most people to cough up something. Maybe a month if two weeks is just to short for some people.
Oh and Zombiedude and Frances65406, when I said tell a story, I didn't really have one of those things in mind. I kind of meant, tell a story from beginning to end just yourself.
I guess the winner chooses is go? This just means that we need a first one. Any one have any ideas? (Or we could just use Ally's original one)
I have a suggestion for some rules:
* original work only
that's it? Can anyone think of anything else?
Any one willing to be a judge for the first one? Or it could work on a voting system, where everyone PMs me their vote (of course, any votes for your self will be discarded). And I just add up the votes, etc. etc.
-
Make it a weekly challenge.
It cannot be that hard to create art to a theme in a week. Even if you throw down something that you don't like, you might learn a few things.
But I'll play bi-weekly too.
-
we don't have to have only one challenge at a time. we could have a monthly one AND a weekly one.
i was thinking of doing some stuff about every month of the year in that month, then making a calendar off of them at the end of the year. it may be a nice monthly challenge.
-
Making two different challenges might make things a tad too confusing.
Pants, the reason I'm advocating the two weeks is because right now I have enough time, but in a month or so I'll be overloaded with work, decreasing my chances of being able to participate if it's a weekly thing.
However, if people would rather do that, and run along without every other week or so, that's fine by me.
-
I would participate. I could really use some drive for something to do with my free time.
-
I would probably be in on this.
-
Alright, tomorrow, hopefully I'll have something cooked up. I'll message people who were interested as well as post it here.
-
Ok tomorrow is now over. gogo. haha jk, just make it good when you do manage to get it going.
-
Heh, sorry, haven't really been around a computer lately.
Alright, the theme is:
'the war has ended.'
Do with it what you want.
Deadline is Sunday, February 8th!
Remember: rules are anything goes as long as it's original.
I think it would also be great if people could write a short summary of what they learned, just to tell others.
-
i guess we're putting our work here?
well, here it is.

I like that a lot. Is it traditional medium or digital?
(also, that was sort of the idea I had, now I have to do something else.
-
oh, i forgot to write about it lol. done in photoshop, took about an hour and a half with a mouse. used airbrushes, smudge, dodge and burn tools. 3-4 layers of shading, then a layer of color.
the blurry dreamish-nightmarish look is what i was after, im pretty pleased with the result.
-
I have a fantastic idea for mine but it's also a pretty illegal form of art. I'll figure out an alternative.
-
ibrahimdelil, that is pretty excellent. kudos. I have yet to start mine. Got swamped by work (like I said I would be :P), but I'll be starting thinking probably on Wednesday.
-
Mine is a pretty sizable image, so here is a link to it:

-
looks very nice :-)
-
PantsFTW I quite like that actually. Hints as to how you did it?
And here is mine:
an ending (http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee195/StaedlerMars/fist-in-cloud.png)
I've come to the conclusion that I need a camera. I'd be able to take many a picture that I could use.
How it was done: A brush that was just the fist, some copy pasting, image filtering and a mushroom cloud.
I'm not sure how I feel about it. Definitely learned how useful the magnetic tool can be, also the effects of some of the overlay modes.
I guess I'll call the end of submissions tomorrow?
-
I took some plasma clouds and gray-scaled them, messed with the levels, then added yellow. I had some blank copies so I could do the black and gray layers. And I made an orange layer as well. Then I blended and erased and blurred and burned and dodged the hell out of the parts to get how I wanted it to look. Finally, I found the outline of a fighter jet and made it look transparent except for the red part in the middle. It sounds really simple when I explain it like this, but it took me quite a few hours to finish.
-
Ergh gotta finish mine up. Your submission looks great Mars.
Edit: It's done and I am reasonably satisfied with it. Must get a scanner.
Can you give me a day longer?
-
well, will there be a new theme? i mean, if we don't keep this up it will die away and never gonna see more than 3-5 submissions ^_^
-
I need a big push, like push me off the cliff i call "artist block" into the sea of creativity.
-
Hey, everyone send me your votes? I don't know how else to do this?
Whoever wins gets to pick the next topic. I guess I didn't realize how quick this part would have to go. Voting closes 24 hours from when I post this. 0030 for me GMT.
I'll announce the winner and they can pick a new theme.
Anyone can vote (not just participants!) If you vote for yourself I obviously won't count it.
@Zombiedude, if you can't get it on soon, I guess we can put it into the next one? I don't want to hold off the entire process, hope you understand.
-
Ok, I won't post it but next theme i will be ready. procrastination or not
-
So the winner was... (drumrole)
ibrahimdelil!
Congratulations!
It's your turn to pick the theme!
-
Alright so the new theme as picked by ibrahimdelil theme is 'joy'
Get arting!

It is a copy of thisfamous pic (http://www.cafehistoria.net/photos/uncategorized/2007/08/15/vj_day_kiss.jpg)
Now, to work on the next one.
-
ok, this went nowhere. What would we do next? turn it in whenever or start a new one?
I am determined not to let this thread die.
-
new one!
-
yea try again :D
-
Ah man, see I knew this would happen. I got swamped by work guys, and I totally haven't had time to do anything extra.
New theme? Or does 'joy' still stand?
-
We should start a new one. see also: the 3 posts before yours
-
Well, then suggest a theme. The first one to do so wins.
-
I'd be up to doing these. I'm more of a photo manipulator than anything else though. I'm not sure if that would count as an original work though. ^^;
Maybe the theme could be 'external happiness'. People interpret happiness in different ways. Most of them think of happiness as being internal. This could force everyone participating to think a bit more outside the box, myself included. As of right now I have no idea what I'd do for a theme like that. Good stretching of skills. :]
-
How about passion? that should be fairly easy to translate into art.
Also, you musicians should really be a part of this. It would be more interesting with more people.
