Title: Magic: The Gathering QC Tournaments?
Post by: Trollstormur on 16 Jan 2009, 19:08
This is a thread to gauge the interest of y'all.

We'd be using Magic Workstation, or apprentice depending on preference. I'm more familiar with Apprentice but some people say it's user unfriendly.

Standard DCI tournament rules would apply because that's just the easiest way to run things. swiss where applicable.

for you old school fellas, we might even run some "cannot use cards newer than [blank]" to relive your glory days (and to not have to learn a shitload of new cards.)

lemme know the following:

1. if you'd like to play
2. what you'd like to play
3. what you'd like to play on.

thanks

I would be interested if I hadn't lost all my old cards and stopped playing for 5 years.  I have a few decks, but I'm really out of practice.

magic workstation doesn't really require you to own any cards, so er uh shouldn't be an issue.

Oh...umm...I don't know.  It'll depend on how much schoolwork I get this semester.

Man, the last time I played Magic the Hammer of Bogardan (http://sales.starcitygames.com/cardscans/MAGMIR/hammer_of_bogardan.jpg) was still all the rage.

Apparently it doesn't run very well in WINE, so probably not so much here :/

WebWizard would work, but it's a bit shit.

well the problem is getting everyone online at the same time.

should I just schedule an event and let everyone know where to come? (probably a meebo chat room.)

I'm sad that I only just saw this.  I'm in.

I don't know much at all about playing with anything but physical cards, but I'll figure something out.

So, if we do tournament play, what rules should we be going by for banlists? I don't think it would be all that much fun to have everyone using 4x of all the moxes.

I'm having a hard time remembering what some of the cards are called, but I'm putting together a deck right now.

are we going to be playing in standard?

I think that some of the more old-timers would probably appreciate being able to use older cards, so they actually know what some of them do (besides Giant Growth and Llanowar elves, those things have been around forever). As I recall, standard is the newest however many sets, right?

Honestly, despite being an older player, I'd prefer playing a Type 2 block of some sort or else just limiting the whole thing to 10th edition. Quite simply, Magic has been around long enough now where "older cards" is going to be a really relative term; when I first started playing Revised had just came out, whereas "old" to others might mean something from 2001. No matter what we pick there's likely going to be someone who's out of the loop when it comes to the cards available, so we might as well limit the pool of cards we're using in the interest of fairness and to keep the whole thing from being overwhelming.
