I am taking some initiative here starting a thread.
First up, Happy Birthday Ali!
(Also, happy birthday yesterday ex girlfriend, you are 21 now, I imagine you will be uploading 60 pictures to facebook where you are drunk and do not look good at all)
-
Happy Birthday Benito!
-
Happy birthday best friend tomorrow!
(What can I get her? Not movies not music not booze not clothing stuff what's left crap I am not good at this.)
-
Jewelry and perfume and smelling salts etc?
A nice picture frame (if its a good one) tends to go down well too.
-
Books? We don't really know anything about her hobbies or interests; does she do crafty stuff? Could you quickly find something quirky that would make her laugh?
-
Girls love diamonds.
-
Thread is allowed to survive on the basis of the title
-
The best way to start a birthday? Getting a 2 minute phonecall from my stressed-out mom at 6:30, when I didn't have to get up until 9.
But happy birthday Ali! And happy birthday to the princess of Norway, I guess, and Emma Bunton and Nicky Butt.
-
She's turning 21 and we've been friends for so long jewelry and stuff would feel .. weird.
How would you (girls) like getting that cosmetics body butter stuff that smells yummy but you're not supposed to eat it? Or similar items?
-
Nicky Butt.
Nicky Butt, Nicky Butt, Nicky Nicky Butt, la la la la la la la...
-

This kind of stuff is great. Most girls I know between the ages of fourteen and seventy love yummy-scented lotions.

The only problem with this is that scented toiletries and picture frames are the kind of thing you give to your office secret santa person if you only know them from work. They are pretty impersonal.
I agree with Eris. We need to know more about this person.

i would say no to the smelly lotion and toiletry stuff, imo. i might be alone in this, but this is what i always get from people who don't know what to get me on various occasions but feel obligated to get something for me anyway for whatever reason. i have maybe 20 bottles of lotion and shower gel at this point and all i really do is regift them to people who also tend to do the same thing cos they are in the same situation. it's like a smelly chain letter.
unless you know this is something she really really wants and would love, save it as a last resort.
-
i agree. no smelly lotion or perfume or junk like that. i get it all the time from people that don't know what to get for me, and i have such sensitive skin that i can't use any of it anyway. it's really a thoughtless gift, unless you know that a certain thing is really her favorite or maybe you know she likes it a lot but thinks it is too expensive to buy for herself.
hey guys, it's almost jason's birthday. he will be 22. what should i get for him? (note: the boy already got nearly everything in the world for christmas.)
-
Evernew, jewelry isn't weird if it isn't shmancy diamond stuff. Cute bangles/cocktail rings and stuff are not romantic gifts, but you can easily tailor your choice to her taste and she can get a lot of fun wear out of them.
Other options!
-concert tickets
-DVD and a bottle of wine she likes
-gear if she has hobbies, like a new chalk bag if she rock climbs ect.
-maybe its just me, but any friend who bought me a good kitchen knife would be amazing
-
Evernew: What about a framed picture of the two of you doing something fun together?
-

i agree. no smelly lotion or perfume or junk like that.
Heh, I guess I'm the one who's alone in this, then. Or alone, at least, with my two best female friends and my mother and my boyfriend's mother.
Oh well.
-
it's not that i don't like it, more that i do but unfortunately do not need more than one thingy of soap/lotion/body wash/bath gel/etc at a time. the dozens of bottles and tins and bars i have crammed into my bathroom cupboard will literally last me for years. it's getting a bit ridiculous.
not a bad gift in itself, but again, i think it's best to give stuff like that to someone with the knowledge that it's something they actually like and want rather than as a "i didn't know what else to get her" gift, cos chances are lots of people already do that and she is in the same kind of annoying situation as me and yelley.
-
I think I would maybe buy perfume or lotion or something if I knew what kind of brand and type someone used, and could get them that or something similar. I've disliked pretty much every "smelly" thing I've gotten, just because people tend to not buy things I actually like the smell of.
-
also i am filthy and smelly and never shower so why would i even want soap anyway
-
That makes sense, Tania. I guess the whole personal vs. impersonal thing really is more the issue. With the group of people I mentioned, we know each others' favorite scents and brands. And so it's a much more personal, individualized decision. There are definitely people I would never buy stinky lotions for.

Welcome to the top of my dresser!

None of these items were given to me as gifts. I purchased them (or used coupons on them) all by myself. It is a consequence of my job, since I see them on sale all the time and cannot help but buy when they're 50%/75% off.
I guess what I am saying is please do not buy them for me? I already have enough and I know what I like!
-
How many bottles of perfume can you use at once? Don't they go bad if you don't finish them after a few months?
I usually tell people not to buy my presents, but if it is a close friend, i wouldn't mind if they asked me. I would tell them a good present based on how close they are and therefore how much they could afford to spend on me. I would tell them my favourite band at the moment and the album i want, or something i need for school, or my fav perfume that is running out.
-
Geeze Liz, you must be the best smelling person ever. I kind of rely on my shampoo and not being too sweaty to make me smell alright, perfume just seems to get eaten by my skin and stop smelling like much.
-
Happy Birthday, Ali!
Also, I generally like to get personal gifts for people wherever possible, but sometimes you just got to resort to a more general gift. I normally don't like getting people gifts that are too utilitarian. Getting a girl something to wash herself with (bath stuff, scented things, that sort of thing) seems kind of rude to me. Almost like saying "oh hey, have you heard of this thing called bathing?"
-
Get her toilet paper. But be a gentleman and get her the fancy stuff, not the one-ply shit.
-
Happy birthday, whoever you may be, may lizards grace your future.
It is my dads birthday today too, he gets cake.
-
Monogrammed toiletpaper.
-
Welcome to the top of my dresser!
Being the neurotic, organization-obsessed person I am, I appreciate the layout you have created here. I would totally do this. but like, with rocks or something.
-
i don't like to get gifts from people either. i live in a tiny room and get really ansty once i start feeling cluttered or like i own too many things i don't absolutely want or need. the idea of someone spending money on me on something i don't desperately want or need in my life just makes me cranky and irritated that now i have to get rid of it or ask them to return it. i won't be offended if someone doesn't get me anything, it's a scenario i prefer drastically to the hassle associated with getting more stuff in my life i don't need. these are often people who don't know me particularly well and are only getting me a gift out of obligation, so i try to be as polite and upfront about this as possible and hope i don't offend too many people. the only time i like receiving gifts is if they are from a person who knows me so well that they not only know i will love this but that it's something i wouldn't have thought of or bought for myself.
i don't like to ask people to buy things for me. i know everyone is different on this though. i like gifts to be surprises! to me, asking someone to buy something for me just seems like asking to borrow money. the difference between me buying myself a gift and them buying a gift for me is that they know things i don't, which include things i might like.
-
My birthday was the 18th, which is recent, if that counts for anything.
-
Being the neurotic, organization-obsessed person I am, I appreciate the layout you have created here. I would totally do this. but like, with rocks or something.
Tallest in back, shortest in from, rows alternating so I can see all of them.
Perfumes don't go bad that quickly. I am pretty sure it takes years and years for them to really degrade into grossness.
-
It's my birthday fairly soon and I am getting all kinds of kitcheny stuff. I think my family found it weird when I asked for a set of saucepans, some really sharp knives, an electric whisk and a set of chopping boards but really, who needs more shower gel? Also: bath bombs. Do not buy these. Ever. No one ever wants them at all.
I need to get something for my little sister's birthday, which was ages ago but I won't see her til the middle of February so I've got a while. I thought about a little "Teenager Survival Kit" because she's just turned 13 and she likes that kind of gimmicky thing, but what kind of things are not tacky for this idea?
-
acne cream and a "get out of a mocking free when you break up with some 14 year old kid and come looking for sympathy" card! Also maybe a pretty diary/journal?
-
Man chopping boards. That is the perfect thing to get me. Especially if they're just little, a lot of the time I'm just slicing one tomato or something. I've gotta remember this for my birthday.
-
Ask for bamboo ones! You have to oil them, which is kind of a pain, but I got some small ones for xmas and GEEZE they're beautiful

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILIO!
Now you can legally drink when you come to the states with their silly laws about age.
-
Happy Birthday E!
You're now that little bit closer to death.
-
Wow. This thread made me think that Fatty was back.
-
Happy birthday Emilio! Are you self-concious about your receding hairline? Enjoy being older!
-
Smelly lotions and soaps that people give me as gifts almost always get politely refused or thrown away. I don't wear perfume because the ratio of scents-that-make-my-eyes-water-and-itch to those-that-don't is overwhelming in favour of the itchy ones and it is just too much effort to find the ones that don't. Plus, I like my smell. I don't re-gift these things, either, because most of the women I know have the same problems.
However, I do like socks! Sock dreams is the best site. My family thought I was crazy when I said that is what I wanted for Christmas, until Christmas rolled around and they saw the huge pile of silly socks I accrued. It was the best.

Emilio actually showed me that because his ID was so differently laid out than most US IDs and his birthdate was pretty hard to find unless you know where to look it made no difference that he wasn't 21 while Chicagocon was happening.
-
Just for the record, who's Emilio...?
-
E. Spaceman. He is a good dude.
-
Man chopping boards.
Chopping boards intended especially for men? Boards dedicated to man chopping?
-
E. Spaceman. He is a good dude.
Don't lie to him.
I am of course, kidding. I'd hit that in a minute.
-
Thank you.
Happy belated, E. Spaceman. I've stolen a lot of music from you.
-
Yes, happy belated birthday, E.
Also happy not belated birthday to Clara. Or technically belated because it's the 21st here.
-
Still early morning in Claraland though
-
Oi you kids, Emilio and I are still engaged! I'll have no hitting on my fiance, thank you VERY much indeed.
-
Happy birthday
Fred Durst! .. Isaac Hayes! HP Lovecraft?

Happy belated, Reed.

Happy birthday.

Happy birthday, Reed! We need to hang out and get drunk again, sometime.
(I promise not to leave you on a strange couch this time)
-
..maybe.
-
Thanks guys!
Also, Shane, next time you are coming down here. While it made for an interesting story I really don't want to hitchhike from N. Adams down to Lennox ever again.
-
Oh dear god, you hitchhiked?
I feel like an asshole now. Jesus. I'm sorry, man. And of course, the busses here don't run on Sundays.
-
It's fine, my cell phone died so I couldn't call for a ride back down and I didn't have anyone's phone number memorized, so I couldn't call from a payphone.

It is, however, the birthday of:
Molly Ringwald
Matt Dillon
Dr. Dre
Vanna White
Yoko Ono
and most importantly:
Sholom Aleichem
-
What. My birthday isn't until April.
It's the thought that counts
