Ladies and Gentelmen,
Holy Fucking Shit (http://albumart.mastodonrocks.com/)
-
hello new (and slightly stretched) desktop wallpaper!!!
that is badass btw.
-
<3 Massadon.
So hard.
So goddamn hard.
-
That is the worst album cover I have seen since Super Furry Animals' Hey Venus.
-
i like it.
i'm not that into Mastodon, but the art is definitely sweet.
-
That is the worst album cover I have seen since Super Furry Animals' Hey Venus.
why do you so hate the bright shiney multicolouredness?
-

I want to buy that album now
-
You should buy all their albums; they're fantastic.
-
I agree with Jackie. That thing is a god damn monstrosity.
Man you kids are no fun. It's perfect for Mastodon's drugged out Metalness. Or at least I think it is.
-
It's....interesting.
I'm not the biggest fan of them, but they're all right.
It doesn't look like it fits the music of they're albums they currently have out, so I wonder if there will be a large shift to a different style.
-
Mastodon are essentially extreme sludge metal with hardcore elements.
This suits them perfectly.
-
With the shift in style that I feel in the Force, the album art fits perfectly.
I am really, really looking forward to this album.
-
That is pretty awesome art.
-
It would be better without the bear.
Still hesitantly looking forward to it.
-
It does suit the band.
Like I said, a monstrosity.
You say that like "monstrosity" is an insult.
-
I say that like I've used that vocal (textual?) tone twice today already. Which I have.
Sorry.
-
It would be better without the bear.
Still hesitantly looking forward to it.
If you have ever thought to yourself, "What is the instant in my life where I have been the most wrong about something?" there is your answer.
-
I just think they should change it to something else that's a little smaller. A wolf, perhaps.
-
I reaaaaaalllly don't see what the big deal is about Mastodon. They're kiiiiiiinda boring as far as pseudo/prog/metal/sludge/core/whateverthefuck/whalecore goes.
Basically, I find listening to them a chore.
Blood Mountain is pretty interesting though, I have to give them that.
-
Man, don't let this turn into another 'let's shit on Mastodon' thread.
In other words, I dare you to write a concept album about Moby Dick and have it be half as good as Leviathan.
Bonus: Include a 3-piece interlude depicting the 40 chapters or so that consisted of describing whales in detail.
-
I wasn't shitting on them, just what I think of their music.
Leviathan has a few interesting songs on it, yeah. I mostly listen to music for the music, not the concept, however.
In other words, I don't accept your challenge.
-
It's cool, I don't care if anyone does or not. They have a tendency to only have a few good songs, I just happen to really like the ones that are good, plus they have a pretty awesome drummer.
Last time there was a thread on Mastodon, Jimmy and Khar were all like 'dude this is shitty nu-metal' (taken REALLY out of context). I would rather like to not have that happen again.
-
It looks alright, the time it took to make that could have been spent on a truly awesome piece however. I don't typically buy albums for their art.
-
Mastodon are essentially smoking pot, all the time.
This suits them perfectly.
-
Incidentally has it occurred to people that maybe Mastodon don't take themselves entirely serious?
Read what drummer Brann Dailor has to say about the "concept" of the new record:
"There is a paraplegic and the only way that he can go anywhere is if he astral travels. He goes out of his body, into outer space and a bit like Icarus, he goes too close to the sun, burning off the golden umbilical cord that is attached to his solar plexus. So he is in outer space and he is lost, he gets sucked into a wormhole, he ends up in the spirit realm and he talks to spirits telling them that he is not really dead. So they send him to the Russian cult, they use him in a divination and they find out his problem. They decide they are going to help him. They put his soul inside Rasputin's body. Rasputin goes to usurp the czar and he is murdered. The two souls fly out of Rasputin's body through the crack in the sky(e) and Rasputin is the wise man that is trying to lead the child home to his body because his parents have discovered him by now and think that he is dead. Rasputin needs to get him back into his body before it's too late. But they end up running into the Devil along the way and the Devil tries to steal their souls and bring them down…there are some obstacles along the way."
Also, you fucks all shot hella jizz at the This Will Destroy album cover. How does that significantly differ from this. Aside from your dumbass preconceptions about metal or progressive music, that is?
-
First single "Divinations" is now up at their Myspace.
FUCK, this sounds promising, if you ask me!
-

you, sir, are spot on with that!
also, i like when bands go out of their way to use crazy-ass artwork - i've discovered several of my favourite albums just by going into a music store and randomly buying an album with cool artwork, sometimes even instead of something i'd really wanted and gone in to get.
-
Jesus fuck the new song rules!
FUCK!
FUUUUUCK!
BANJO!
-

Fuck I love you right now.
-
Mast rules.
-
Incidentally has it occurred to people that maybe Mastodon don't take themselves entirely serious?
That's why I like the bear. It's really the only thing about the cover that gave me the impression they might just be fuckin' around.
Which is also why I liked the This Will Destroy You album cover. I like when bands don't take themselves too seriously, especially when the point of their music isn't to be "fun".
-
Incidentally, I was reminded of the bear god in NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer when I saw that (Okku, I think?).
-
Yeah, see, I don't get the hatin' on the bear. Calling that bear over the top seems like going to WWE match and then slapping one and only one fan for liking showboating and macho posturing.
-
Also, you fucks all shot hella jizz at the This Will Destroy album cover.
I didn't.
I'm already tired of the "ironically cheesy album cover" trend.
Trans Am perfected the art of being fucking awesome while also taking the piss; shit like those album covers is just retarded.
-
I personally kinda think this Mastodon cover is cool in an unironic fashion. Am I behind the times, or just a huge nerd?
-
No, I thought it was pretty cool too. I mean there's ALWAYS a degree of irony with Mastodon, but still. I'm with ya wizard.
-
I actually hated the This Will Destroy You cover. That just seemed like it didn't fit at all and was completely out of place.
This however, feels like it fits perfectly.
-
This is a totally boss piece of artwork, completely independent of the whatever Mastodon is/sounds like (1wheel played like 2 of their songs for me and I was totally unimpressed). I completely enjoy how it incorporates early Mezo-America Pseudo-Divinities with a clearly North American Spirit God into an otherworldly sort of Epic Image. It reminds a lot of Early TOOL album covers, which are also awesome.
Can someone explain why they dislike it without resorting to "It's a completely gaudy piece of shit eyesore."?
-
Oh my god you guys. According to the wikipedia page for the album, Brann Dailor (drums) said this is what the album is about.
The story starts with a seed and it grows. It's a multidimensional story. It starts on planet earth, it deals with astral travel, goes to outer space, you get lost and you go on into a wormhole and you start exploring all sorts of Stephen Hawking's theories, space continuum and all that, you go into the spirit realm, you get sucked into another wormhole that brings you into Tsarist Russia and you get put inside Rasputin's body and Rasputin is assassinated and you fly off through the crack in the skye and back through outer space into the devil's dominion, passed him, back into earth and into your body. It´s all real natural and it all kind of comes together. We like it.
I would like to know what kind of drugs these guys have been using because that is fucking crazy.
Edit: Also the song on their myspace is fucking boss.
-
Sean that is the quote I was looking for before I found the one I posted. I liked that one because I hear it all as one big running sentence, like the way a four year-old tells you about his day.
-
I think they should have used this.

Oh god yes....
-
that cartoon thing is the single most awesome thing i've ever seen!!!
-
Are the words in that cartoon actual lyrics? They're pretty terrible.
-
That kicked so much ass
-
Are the words in that cartoon actual lyrics? They're pretty terrible.
It's no Rime of the Ancient Mariner as performed by Iron Maiden, that's for sure.
-
Are the words in that cartoon actual lyrics? They're pretty terrible.
WHITE
WHALE
HOLY
GRAIL
-
*riff riff riff riff fucking awesome riff*
-
wait harry how did you miss that whole phase when we were posting blood and thunder lyrics a while back
-
The art kind of reminded me of Alex Grey's work as displayed at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (http://www.cosm.org/mirrors.html).
-
BANJO!
CRUSHING DICK DALE-STYLE GUITAR SOLO!
-
The art kind of reminded me of Alex Grey's work as displayed at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (http://www.cosm.org/mirrors.html).
It reminds me more of www.legorobotcomics.com.
-
Not the WHITE WHALE HOLY GRAIL comic. The album art, fool.
-

What's a blood and thunder lyric?
-
The lyrics to Blood and Thunder, the lyrcs in the comic.
-
I see.
They're pretty terrible.
-

This is a video with the cartoon set to the actual music.
Yes.
-
Not the WHITE WHALE HOLY GRAIL comic. The album art, fool.
...Imma go sit in a corner now, call me again when you need someone to make a fool of themselves.
-
It's all good man. I am just teasing.
-
It's cool man, I'm just being self deprecating.
-
I see.
They're pretty terrible.
Due to my extreme fanboyism, the words you just wrote simply do not compute :-(
-
never been a huge fan of mastodon's album art. many of my friends are though. i guess it just reminds me too much of something you'd find at spencers or hot topic, next to grateful dead incense
-
Just because lame subcultures enjoy something does not make it terrible.
See:
Joy Division
The Smiths
The lame half of Against Me!'s fanbase
Manic Panic
-
Kind of OT:
http://www.imeem.com/people/oKlHQHS/music/nSM9g0Ge/sfr_records_sealegsmp3/
But makes me imagine if Mastodon was hip-hopping.
Because this might just be it.
-
Holy Fucking Shit (http://albumart.mastodonrocks.com/)
I've never heard of them, but from the album cover I figure they do, like, trance or goa or so ?!
-
Yeah, I should know. I met 'em once, and those fuckers couldn't stop dancing when I talked to 'em. Kinda annoying.
-
So, you guys....
www.cracktheskye.org is up now, with an instrumental version of new track "Oblivion" is up, along with loads of artwork, videos and some stills from the "Divinations" video, which looks to become pretty fucking awesome.
-
Are the words in that cartoon actual lyrics? They're pretty terrible.
It's no Rime of the Ancient Mariner as performed by Iron Maiden, that's for sure.
well yeah, but the best parts are when the song quotes directly from the poem, Coleridge is a god.
Though Mastodon certainly follows Maiden (and metal as a genre) in having completely over the top art work.
-
Always been a bit up and down with these guys, music's sometimes good but the hipster love irritates me to no end. It's the ubiquitous band that hipsters will say they love just to, I dunno, appear more edgy? Make other think they like metal? (Them, Wolves in The Throne Room, and these days Krallice). Regardless, they've always done excellent cover art and I'll snap this up relatively quickly when it comes out. If the music's no good then I'll at least have a sweet looking cd.
-
Okay, so the video for single "Divinations" is up now at
www.mastodonrocks.com
Personally, I think it's nothing short of hilarious/awesome.
-
The way that Yeti's hair moved reminded me of a really fun night I had. I know that's a weird detail to point out, but it's the truth.
-
Has anyone else heard that Patton Oswalt bit where he talked about how he wished that there were more current-day videos where guitar solos had transformative powers?
-
Seems like someone heard him. I also love how they use the guitar to shoot fire and lightning for no apparent reason.
-
that video is the dictionary definition of "BADASS!"
-
Someone leaked the opening track "Oblivion" in a slightly amputated state onto Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4bCvv-fB1k&fmt=18
Shit, I really like this new direction they've taken. This is just so damn catchy and melodic. I love it!
Of course, the old die-hard "Remission" fans will hate it and think they've sold out and stuff, but frankly I love this. I seriously can't wait 'till the Album comes in my door.
-
I was actually really digging the intro to the track but it really lost me at that jarring change of pace.
Really like the stonery kind of bits to the song but the bits where they're just riffing bored the shit out of me, which is ridiculous because Mastodon have always just been about the most riffular riffs, being riffed as fast as they can with some fast drumming and ridiculous lyrics.
It's just that Mastodon have a good history of really kicking my arse with their first track and this doesn't do it, which makes me hella skeptical but I will give the whole album a chance.
-
True, it is a very big departure from their usual way of starting albums (I mean... Crusher Destroyer ferchrissakes!), but I like it a lot. Being a huge prog dork, this new direction makes me real happy in my pants.
-
Yeah the vocal style doesn't actually sound good objectively to my ears but it is pushing the big red prog button in my brain despite the song being pretty uninteresting for the most part, which is why I'm going to still give the album a shot, but the changes in tempo are just really obnoxious and I am worried they just sat down and had a meeting and listed a bunch of things they could do to be proggier and this was one of them.
-
Call me crazy, but aren't there more tempo changes in the older stuff? I mean, listen to the Lifesblood EP, that's just pure insanity.
-
It's not the quantity of changes but rather that in this song it just sounds terrible whenever they do it.
-
Oh, okay. I just misunderstood you there, then. Eitherway, it might grow on you:)
-
The entire Album is now available for streaming on the band's Myspace page!
-
HO-ly FUCKING ASS THE DIVINATIONS VIDEO IS SO AWESOME.
-
video interview, including an explanation of the concept of the album (http://www.blender.com/Video-Exclusive-Mastodon-Helps-Blender-Crack-the-Code-to-Crack-the-Skye/Blender-Blog/blogs/1168/63547.aspx)
-
Just put the album in the mediaf!re thread, 320kbps.
-
So, you guys, they FINALLY made a video for "Oblivion", and it came out REALLY good!
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=58673491
-
I cannot begin to describe the sheer badassitude of this album.
-
Their music videos come as kinda silly though. Perhaps it's is just me.
-
Their music videos come as kinda silly though. Perhaps it's is just me.
Pretty sure that is 100% intentional. Mastodon is pretty in-tune with their campiness.
-
Remembered that I loved Blood Mountain and ran out to get this one this morning.
Good stuff.
The Last Baron is nuts.
