Title: hey, show us your _____
Post by: yelley on 29 Jan 2009, 12:40
this is a thread in which we ask to see pictures of other forumer's things that we are curious about.

rules:
-no requesting inappropriate or illegal things. this is not a thread in which we ask katie to show us her tits, or ask tommy to show us his dong.
-no requesting unless you have posted a picture.
-you may make general requests, but i think more specific ones would be more fun. for example you can say 'hey everyone, i want to see what car you drive' or you can say 'hey OWW, i want to see a picture of your unicycle'

i will go first, and i am starting out by breaking rule number 2 since nobody has requested anything yet.

edith, i would really like to see your yarn stash. and mai, i would really like to see your shoe collection.

I think you're supposed to wait until you have posted a picture in reply to a request.

It might be an idea to add a 'general request' to get things up and running rather than waiting for individual people to get online and reply so we could always go with Boro's one.
Title: Re: hey, show us your _____
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 29 Jan 2009, 17:23
EDIT:I agree with Oli, it is a failed idea to try and post only to specific people, since they are not online, in the meantime no one else would have fun, so a general request like mine can take precedence over those ultra specific ones. Those people can reply and post their own requests when they have time.

as per joe's request, this is (some of) my bookshelf. i read a lot of books. a lot of them are textbooks. i'm a pretty boring person.

you can see one interesting thing though - the orange book at the top is a first edition copy of the world according to garp that was given to me as a gift. this is one of my favourite books ever and i keep telling everyone to read it but then i can't loan it to them because it's so valuable. i forget that i own it sometimes.

okay now this is my desk as of 5 minutes ago. you can see various interesting objects, such as eragon in spanish (haven't gotten too far into that because my spanish isn't good enough yet) a copy of human japanese to the left, it's of course a japanese learning program, which i haven't used much because i'm still working on spanish. underneath you can see my cd player (correlates to the two big speakers on top), and the subwoofer to my beautiful christmas-obtained computer speakers. (oh and if you look on the table to the right you can see part of one of my fish tanks.) hmmm, other items of note include a lamp, my glowing razer deathadder mouse and exactmat, retro old keyboard of fun and coolness, and of course, my cat Trixie. she likes getting in the way. oh and of course on the moniter is this very thread!!

also, lunchbox i like your tri-desk, it's all modern and whatnot, and fatty i want that lamp.

I'll bite, since nobody on the internet ever leaves their home and I've already got old pictures. First one is the street just in front of my house:

if you have anything neat on the walls anywhere in your room and/or house i'd like to see that too.

This painting is almost five feet (1.5 meters) long and three feet tall, and it hangs on the wall above my dining table.  It was in my great-grandmother's house for about fifty years--my great-grandfather purchased it somewhere sometime (I wish I knew the whole story, but I don't).  Last year, my great-grandmother fell down some stairs in her San Francisco house and everyone realized that her Alzheimer's was too bad for her to continue living there, so she was moved to a facility and the house was cleaned up and rented out.  My mom called me and asked if I wanted anything from the house, and I said, "Y'know that painting, the one of Venice that lights up..."

'Cause what's really cool about it is that all of those little shiny glassy bits have lights behind them and you can turn them on...

...and it's pretty magical.

I want to see your workplaces, guys.  Bonus points for surreptitious shots of coworkers.

Tell me about it!

I just got back from my "local". They fucking charged me $6.70 for a schooner of Coopers. Bloody highway robbery.

Makes me glad I've started brewing my own beer.

Also, here are my bookshelves...

My own personal shelves:

And where the rest of my books live, along with my housemates' books:

The non-fiction has been dewey decimal-ised, and the fiction is alphabetised. You know, just in case anyone was worried. Funnily enough I live with a librarian, but she wasn't the one who organised them.

The non-fiction has been dewey decimal-ised, and the fiction is alphabetised.

I was going to say how much I wished for housemates who dewey decimalised their books but then I realised that my housemates don't read books.

Ally, do you like delicious dark chocolatey coffee-y beers? Might I suggest Toohey's Old or Carlton Black, which both represent as hella bogan but are in fact mighty delicious.

My desk is much much emptier than a lot of yours, but my work/reading space is kind of out in the middle of the house so I try to keep it fairly neat.
Note the crazy tapestry covering the awful bland wall, we rent and are not allowed to paint so it's the next best thing.

Bookshelf! Nothing really of note, but we inherited a lot of books from Chris's dad so it's nice to have a big wall of books you haven't already all read through. Complete with glass head and a pink elephant I sewed!

I will show off my pog wall and demon mask if anyone actually wants to see them, don't want to clog up with too many pictures in one post.

Bookshelves:

You see some filing, music (mostly piano and organ, but some scores, vocal and instrumental stuff too), some LPs under the music, CDs.  Books are further round (both ways); more music too.  The clock was my grandfather's; he was given it by a grateful parish on leaving his first curacy.

Mess!

My desk at the back is much as usual.  This was taken while we were having the kitchen rebuilt, so my grand piano is on its side elsewhere, and its space taken up by temporary kitchen things.  The floor is covered with electrical cable and gubbins because I was rewiring the new kitchen myself.  The keyboard is a Kawai MP9500.

...There's a dog?

Oh right, there it is.

Man, I've been in Victoria too long. The schooner's the little one, right?

The schooner is the larger one. Larger than a pot/middy, but smaller than a pint. Then there's the schmiddy, which pops up in places that try to convince you you're drinking and have paid for a schooner, but when in actual fact it's volume is less than a schooner, but more than a middy.

Australian beer measurements are kind of silly now that I think about it. I mean c'mon, a pony? Really?

What the fuck is a pony? (Apart from a skeezy club where my housemate sometimes D.J.s.)

In Victoria as far as I'm aware there are only pots and pints. Which makes things really difficult in a noisy bar:

"Pot, thanks."
"Pint?"
"No, pot." (with accompanying hand-gestures trying to indicate a small glass)
"Oh, right." (bar-person reaches for a pint glass)

A pony is smaller than a middy. To be fair though, most places don't serve them any more... it's a bit archaic I guess. And the schmiddy isn't something you'd order, it's more like the modern equivalent of watering down beer.

Uh, anyways. Back to pictures of stuff!

Okay Mai, so I scrutinized and thought about it.. And here is the shot

Are my favorite shoes for various reasons.

Red ones in the front: most expensive shoes I will ever own, handmade red italian leather, 700 dollars, a present? God damnit give me that money for school auntie. Still, sexiest shoes alive.

Purple one: super comfy and cute, also hand painted by me because I love peacocks

Black ones in the middle that you can't really see: Great things happen every time I wear them, too bad that there is so much ice that makes them unfeasible

Flowery Birks: I painted these and they are the most comfortable things ever.

Bowling style chucks: a close friend sent these and the 6 inch T-Bars from Brazil

Black 6 inch T-Bars: Make me around 6'2 tall, enough said

Shoes in the back that look black but are actually reflective Navy: A present from my father, they're Carlos Santana, who doesn't want Carlos Santana Shoes. Jesus.

These are not the shoes I wear the most, just my favorites. :c

Also, because everyone else got to do it.

My desk: (http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj156/Sneakers_King/room.jpg)
Part of my book shelf(I have a lot in storage):(http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj156/Sneakers_King/books.jpg)

Yes I am a 12 year old girl

EDIT::

I forgot to mention those are my grandfather's ashes on the shelf. I don't want you guys to think I have random jars of dust. I really am trying to find the perfect urn.

So....here are my books that I have in my dorm room. They represent a decent percentage of the books I actually own but there's a good entire book shelf or two still at home that I couldn't bring up. I like having lots of books with me, even though I've read most of these and the ones I haven't read I won't have time to read, for the most part, until the summer when they're all back home. The ones on top of the book case are mostly art history, film theory and human rights theory, the top shelf is some more history/human rights writing and then all my Pynchon, Faulkner, McCarthy and Garcia Marquez books while the bottom shelf is my Roberto Bolano collection, some of my favorite books of poetry and the various novels. Overflow goes to the windowsill.

While I have some of the "classics" of various genres (No Logo, The Aeneid, Moby Dick, Brothers Karamazov, Discipline and Punish and so on), most of my non-novels are fairly nerdy and cover Latin American colonial history and the psychology of torture and a bunch of mostly leftist thinking on subjects of modernity and war and such.

Someone earlier asked for pictures of workplaces, and I seem to be the only one who is going to oblige:

My bench is the one on the left, my desk is just past it (of course I have the only desk without a nice, big window that our building is covered with)

It's amazingly clean today, normally it's cluttered with plates, flasks, beakers and a gel rig or two. Unfortunately nobody was in the lab when I took it, so no bonus points for me

All of these images can be clicked on for larger sizes (yay detail!)

Here are my movies and books:

The only thing hanging on my walls (thank goodness it is rad). It looks crooked because the picture is taken at an angle. I actually had to stand in my dining room and take the picture through the doorway to get the whole thing in the frame!

Aaaand my shoe collection. :-D

Athletic-type shoes (they don't get worn very often). Favorites here are the lime green and plaid pairs.

Flats! The leopard print ones are the best. So comfortable!

Boots, sandals, wedges (the "etc" group, if you will). Black boots and gold sandals are favorites here.

And my heels. Oh I love them. It is hard to pick one favorite, really. I love the purple fuzzy pair, the white wedges, the ridiculous bright colored pair, and the turquoise and brown pair.

Part of my book shelf

I'm going to go ahead and assume the reason you have an Ayn Rand novel in your bookshelf is the same reason I have an Ayn Rand novel in my bookshelf: because your dad gave it to you in a haphazard attempt to convert you to his worldview.

Your dad wanted you to believe that rape is an acceptable form of expressing one's individualism and will be seen as such and even respected by the victim if in fact she is also a fully authentic person who recognizes the value in individualism?  Ayn Rand is utterly ridiculous.  The Fountainhead is unintentionally valuable for its philosophy of aesthetics; barring that everything she ever wrote was tripe in terms of being a valuable way of looking at society at large, individual interactions, or even as just a general piece of fiction.  Ugh...  But I digress.  Nice bookshelves.

Here is  my desk! My iMac is the one on the left of the picture (aluminium one) and the bf's one is the white one on the right. It's generally a little bit more cluttered than it is in that picture.

Here is one for interesting things on the walls:
- Hard drive platters, which are pretty cool mirrors, QC poster from a couple of years ago and a whiteboard/pin board with a bunch of postcards from some of you guys and other cool things I've collected. (you can see the old desk here in this photo, that's gone and is replaced with the new desk in the photo above)

So basically the only thing I have that is rad enough to post in this thread is my record collection. I guess it is still pretty small but I just started it this past summer, so I think I am doing pretty good.

(from left to right: thursday/envy split 12", sparrows swarm and sing - untitled #2, a silver mt zion - 13 blues for thirteen moons, mono - walking cloud..., a silver mt zion - this is our punk rock..., the pirate ship quintet - s/t, a silver mt zion - he has left us alone..., a silver mt zion - horses in the sky, mono - you are there)

(mogwai - a hawk is howling, matthew robert cooper - miniatures, jakob - solace, gb!ye - f#a# infinity, faraquet - anthology 1997-98, dirty three - horse stories, do make say think - & yet & yet, dmst again - winter hymn..., daturah - reverie)

(mono - memorie dal futuro, elder - s/t, lcd soundsystem/arcade fire split, monument - a 3 song 7", peter & craig/i have no idea who the other band is split, a lily - i dress my ankles with god's sweetest words, indigenous music of the village of nongnaad part 2, harry and the potters - scarred for life (only thing that predates this summer), shipping news - flies the fields, the pax cecilia - blessed are the bonds, the summer we went west - following the holy moon goddess, i would set myself on fire for you - belief in patterns)

So that is my record/other music collection. I wanna see your music collections now, if they are cool. Especially Tommy's and Paul's (if you want to.)

I know this one is sad because its self conciously odd, but its the only one I can reply to thus far, also Camera is crappy, can provide you with what the words say if you like:

The line around the top reads "we must TAKE out TABLETS or else we will GO MAD"

The circulat poke-ball bill says "this one helps me not to scare the postman", the yellow one below that says "I love this one so much it HURTS. one day it will understand my SPECIAL POWERS and love me too". The others seemed just about legible, but as I mention, do say if a translation is required.

Yelley I have never seen one person go through Chapstick quicker than you. My dad goes through a tube maybe once every 15 years (it is one of his most noticeable cheapskate habits). My sister and I once bought him a 5-tube pack for Christmas telling him that he would die before using it all.

I also do not like to leave the house without 1 toonie, 1 loonie, 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 1 nickel, and 2 pennies.

I'm a little late to the party on this one, but here is a poorly taken picture of my bookshelf. The only light in my room is inconveniently on the wall instead of the ceiling. I organise my books by their height. It's not a very rigourous system, really. Tall books on the top shelf, medium height on the middle, and tiny books on the bottom. The middle shelf is also divided into books that are mine on the left, books in the middle that I am currently re-reading (No one belongs here more than you and Tropic of Cancer for what is probably the twentieth time or so), and to the right are two books that seem to be hiding that I have borrowed (One Hundred Years of Solitude from my friend's girlfriend and the Yiddish Policemen's Union from my brother). If it were a better picture you could see my little dinosaur figure, my airplane that spins and the neat cylinder filled with goo that is like a more interesting hour glass to watch.

I wanna see your music collections now, if they are cool. Especially Tommy's and Paul's (if you want to.)

I have only kept the LPs that still have some value to me now that loads of stuff is on CDs.  But I still have a hundred-odd, most of which are recordings not otherwise available, but also of little interest to most people.  And you don't want pictures of a couple of thousand CDs!

Here are a few LPs.

The Tavener is probably the most valuable (it can fetch a couple of hundred pounds).  Sgt Pepper is just there to show I still have the cutout sheet, untouched - but I didn't buy it early enough to get the coloured inner sleeve.  The White Album has the original sleeve design which opens at the top instead of the ends (it was bought on the day of release).  The picture book is called "The Beatles Get Back" and came with the original release of Let It Be (also bought on the day of release).

And here I present every recording of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle ever commercially released anywhere,  plus a few bootlegs.  All but two made it to CD at some time:

I am also a little late with the theme but I have a picture of my office at college, complete with friend:

And also my favourite shoes:

I was going to show you my bookcase but the photo I already have only has about five books on it and it's not very interesting, and my room is very cold today so I'm not venturing in there.
Guys, I would like to see your favourite thing. I'd prefer it if this didn't cross over with another category (for example not shoes, or books).

ETA: I just realised my first photo also works for the "rad things on walls" category. I will see if I can get a close up...

Ok it isn't great but it is a series of postcards with cats on them. They are very cute and I'll be taking them with me when I go to university (providing the cleaners haven't stolen them before I go).

ETA ETA: Paul those are both incredibly beautiful objects. I wish I still had a real piano at home, although playing the college's baby grand is a semi-compromise.

These are my favorite things. I had let them get a little dusty when I took this, they're very glossy purple fading into black. Except the snare.

Favourites?  I dare say they can change from time to time, but of what I own this is currently riding high -

Broadwood "Small Grand" 1894:

If you look hard, the music desk spells the name "Broadwood".  The wall behind is going to be fixed soon.

My favourite thing in the whole house is owned by my wife -

"Dog One" by Frink:

I am so lucky...

And also my favourite shoes:
You bitch! I thought only I had those Docs! (just kidding you are not a bitch, I am sorry)

Also, they are soccer MVP trophies, yelley. I am not a good enough heartbreaker to have trophies in it.

So my favorite thing is probably this:

I call it my Channukitty since it was a Channukah gift.

I used to have this excellent bottle opener that was vintage (probably 1920's). It had a handle that was a naked woman made entirely of iron (seriously, you could bludgeon someone do death with the damn thing) that I lost when I moved out here to Ct. I still pine for my poor bottle opener

i have a few favourite things, here is one of them -

i got this tablet for a pretty sweet 30% off discount on account i was working for a computer parts distributor at the time. unfortunately, not even a year after the purchase (and just when i was starting to get the hang of it!), my desktop died and i'm back to my old laptop which is far too decrepit and slow to be able to run either photoshop cs4 or illustrator. i just use it as a mouse now but that's pretty fun too. one day, macbook, one day.

you can see also some chips on the floor that i am eating. i like chips but they're only okay, not really my favourite or anything.

I have that exact same tablet. I bought it one time thinking that I could use it for all kinds of stuff, then I realized I can't draw. Also I don't have photoshop, and I don't really want to spend the time learning GIMP right now... not that I could draw anything if I did know how to use it.

Anyone who has those Docs is a fabulous heart breaker. (or failing that, heart stomper. They are very stompy boots.)(I am a bitch really.)

I have a desk. It is huge because my computer is huge.

Things you can see, left to right:

Pringles, a light up skull that is facing away from the camera, Monitor 1, toothpicks, headset, dice bag+dice(and a hanging mummy), monitor 2, PS2 controller(best thing ever for ROMs), computron 9001, flashlight, calculator, two of those metal thought puzzle things("Can you seperate these two twisty bits of metal?), calculator and part of an hourglass.

Also I really need to dust, I guess.

As above, my desk.

From left to right: monitor, awful keyboard, mouse, cd player, amp, speaker propped up by some books, cans of diet coke caffeine free, and some drawing pins.

Here are some of the albums that were close to my seat:

Thats VU Live 1969 (the double album version, not the split up later one) ,

Some time ago, a request for smoking implements was posted.
I said I'd indulge if it wasn't against the rules.
I hope it isn't.

Pic 1: All of my smoking stuff except the big shisha goes inside this bag.
It used to be a first aid kit and I like to think it still serves that purpose.

Pic 2: The goodie bag in its full glory. I didn't label it too explicitly but you can imagine what goes where.

Pic 3: The current pipe collection.

I thought Shisha was the term for the molasses soaked tobacco that you smoked out of a hookah?

Depending on where you are and where you buy it from, a glass water pipe can be called a Shisha, a Hookah, a Nargileh etc.
The first time I smoked one, people called it a shisha. I stayed with it.

Around me, the substance is definitely the shisha/romman tobacco and the machinery is the hookah.

likewise.

i don't bother with the stuff though. i'm an avid smoker of several other things so smoking shisha is pretty much just like breathing regular air for me.

Back in Egypt the word is pronounced more like "shoe-shah" than "shee-shah" but regardless it was the huge water pipe. My mom used to have one made of gold that she kept in our home's entranceway; I don't think she realized what it was.

Yeah, a shisha is just another name for a hookah.

Last tidbit on water pipes:
In Iran and Afghanistan, it is also called a "reilun". Bonus points for confusion, Middle-Eastern countries!

If I may request - can I see a proper shoe collection? While I was traveling, my mom threw out around 10 pairs and now it saddens me to look at mine.
