Title: Record Store Day 2: Opponents beware. It's coming, it's coming, it's coming.
Post by: valley_parade on 03 Feb 2009, 06:57

Seriously, it's worth it just for giveaways alone, nevermind the free in-store shows. I got to see Everybody Out! played a high-energy show in a cramped Newbury Comics last year, and got a shitload of free vinyl. Apparently Matador's jumping on the giveaway bandwagon this year and putting out a live Pavement LP, and Sonic Youth 7" splits with both Beck and Jay Reatard.

GO. You'll have fun.

Do the UK shops get the same stuff as the American ones? That looks awesome, I'm hoping they do.

Huh, I guess this place in Burlington is participating, but it's not up on their website's calendar.

That's awesome.  And two stores (within an hour of me) are participating!  What exactly goes on on these days?  I've never heard of this.

Mostly, it's big sales, in-store gigs, and tons of free shit.

Newbury Comics was running 25% off all vinyl and DVDs last time around. And I think CDs were 10% off.

I am disappointed more stores in Toronto aren't involved in this.

Is this a final list of the stores?

I hope not because the nearest in the UK is 50 miles from me

I would think your best bet would be to go to your local store and ask. If they're not, punch them thoroughly and tell them to get involved!

I think if i asked at my local store they might get involved. The manager is a really cool guy and even lets people buy cds ahead of release date if he has them in stock.

Violence is not always the answer
Just most of the time  :-P

Hmm, I might try to go to this. I'm not too far from NYC but it's a bit of a hassle to get there from school. But it's probably worth it...
Of course, my favorite record store at home is also taking part so maybe I could head there. I like free/cheap records...

I know, its as if they've delibratly missed out the midlands while the north and south get loads.

I think I'll go, drag a friend along with me. I don't spend as much at independent stores as I would like to, they don't usually have the CDs I'm looking for. Anyone in Colorado know whether Albums On The Hill or Twist And Shout has better selection for metal records?

I don’t think that list is entirely right.  For one thing, they list at least one store in DC that’s not in business anymore.

You weren't embarassed by whatever the hell the Canadiens wore on Sunday against the Bruins?

That thing was giving me a headache.

Oh that was awful. I had to turn it off after a while because I couldn't bear watching it more. That's how awful it was.

I think michaelicious is trying to tell us he's a Celine Dion fan.

Last week, my dad flew from Massachusetts to Miami to see a Celine Dion show.

He's officially been kicked the fuck out of the man club. And this is the dude that used to drum in a band called Cobra and brought me up listening to Led Zeppelin and Ozzy.

Oh that was awful. I had to turn it off after a while because I couldn't bear watching it more. That's how awful it was.

It was like watching a car wreck, only your team scores three goals instead of breaking an arm and going to the hospital.  :-D

I love that everyone is complaining about having to travel for this, and the girl from Fargo will just have to cross the street.

I am SO in on this business.

I will have to travel a long, long way to go to any of the Melbourne stores participating in this.

Because I will be in Italy.

I work at Slackers.

I seriously cannot wait for this. We are moving soon and we are going to have a bigger store and probably room for instores, and so much win.

Yes, it's necroposting but I figured this would be better than starting a new thread.  So, Record Store Day is this Saturday, who else is excited and going?  I'll be hitting up Vintage Vinyl & Princeton Record Exchange in New Jersey, and possibly ez2collect but I'm not so sure about that one.

Phonopolis and Aux 33 Tours are.  I'll likely drop by Phonopolis, since it's easily my favourite record store in the city.  Should be a couple things I'm interested in picking up.  Pity it doesn't look like there's going to be an instore performance for the day, but seeing Baby Eagle, Shotgun Jimmy, and Julie Doiron there the other day was plenty wonderful.

This makes me sad, because it is basically Free Comic Book Day for music, which indicates that buying physical copies of music is now a completely marginalized culture and industry- just like comics.

The day seems much more about vinyl than CDs though.  And vinyl buying culture has been pretty marginalized for the past 15-20 years.

I just found out I can go! And like 3 record shops in my immediate area are participating.

Any recommendations for LP's or 7" that I desperately need? Even CDs are going to be on sale. But who listens to those anymore. Jeez.

I made out like a fuckin' bandit today with this. Went down to Boulder with a friend and $40 in tow. Got a Shit Robot 12", a Haverchuk (sp?) single, a Squarepusher single, a Metric 7", the last Jay Reatard / Sonic Youth split 7" they had, a Grizzly Bear 7" and an Andrew Bird / Lonely Dear split 7". The guy who ran the shop liked us apparently, so he gave me a couple of extra 7"s for free and a fuck-ton of CD compilations. I have a lot of stuff now.

Just a raffle you got entered in if you spent more than $50 and a bunch of free crap in a box.

Record Store Day was awesome.

Fingerprints in Long Beach is awesome
We got shows from Crystal Antlers, The Bird and the Bee, and Matt Costa

They ended up getting me for $40 though.... I bought
Leonard Cohen (live 7-inch)
Pavement ("Live in Germany 1988" LP)
Lou Rawls ("Carryin' On!" LP)
Belle & Sebastian ("If You're Feeling Sinister" LP)

(I'm super excited to listen to that live Leonard Cohen/ Pavement stuff)

The Jay Reatard, MC5 and Stooges were sold out everywhere I went. Hrmph.

But I spent about 60 bucks on records at a couple shops and then about that at the CHIRP Record Fair (Why on the same day? so poor)

I wasn't planning to go, but when I found myself outside Sound Pollution in Stockholm I decided to take a look, but wasn't planning to buy anything. But somehow I suddenly had Boris & Michio Kurihara - Rainbow in my hand, and ended up buying it. Even with a 20% discount though, it was way too expensive for me to ever make buying cd's a regular habit (that cd at regular price would have been $20 - with the discount, about $16).
