Title: Hey, who wants to play on Goontopia? (SA Diablo II custom realm itt)
Post by: Trollstormur on 12 Feb 2009, 17:08
Goontopia is a something awful forums custom realm for Diablo II that is running a really cool modification called Eastern Sun.

Eastern Sun adds a shitload of new stuff, but at a genuine curve so you have a chance to learn everything over time rather than all at once.

But enough from me, check out the post on the Forums: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3073457 (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3073457)

That will have all the information you need, but here's the skinny: you have to have a something awful forums account to register an alluvion account, and you need an alluvion account to register a goontopia account. If you want to play, but do not have a SA acct PM me and I will create one for you. Gimme what you want the acct name to be and email address and I'll make you a PW that you can change afterwards if you don't trust me.

the guy who runs this, b0lt specifically said he'd allow people to reg their friends so it's cool, I'm not gonna get in trouble.

c'mon and play, it's a pretty fun time!

Don't know if want.

Is LoD required to play?

LOD is not required (at least I don't think, I have not tried it without. however when creating a character, I had the option of creating a non-expansion character), but the realm does not check for CD keys so you could use a borrowed CD & key to install

Man, I would so totally be in this.  My characters are all pretty low levels on Normal difficulty, though.

it's an online realm so you have to start new characters.

I started from scratch 4 days ago and i've already got a 40-something barbie.

here's some tips for starting up:

1. easiest way to get good gear starting is to use gems to make gemwords. you can always resocket items and you never lose the gems so it's not too big of a deal using your fancy gems at the start.

2. Gheed sells this thing called a Rerolling Orb. Get one after you get a couple rings and never sell a ring, amulet, jewel or charm. Using this rerolling orb you can turn plain ol' crappy magic trinkets like these into rares and uniques. Sure, it takes 49 magic trinkets to make 1 unique one, but honestly how many crappy +3% cold resist rings do you just trash?

3. yes, the socket donut is consumed when you use it, and those motherfuckers are 70k apiece, so don't grab 'em until you need 'em.

So far I really like the changes made to the skill trees, but in some instances it fixes the sort of broken gameplay I used to enjoy so much (the druid's fire spells, for example, are now reversed. You start with volcanoes and move up to firestorms) and it speeds up the game quite a lot, which I enjoy. All the equipment upgrades are nice as well.

Necro summoning (the new spells, anyway) are pretty badly bugged though. They don't follow you.

I really really want to play this. I don't know where my Diablo CDs are anymore though, so I'd need a CD key from someone I guess.

Also, PMing you troll.

I used to play a mod called SevenLances back during the days of D2, on a private server.  Very difficult, but it was a lot of fun, plus it was kinda cool seeing balance changes being made in a week's time, instead of three month's time ;)

I never got around to trying Eastern Sun, but I've heard many good things about it.  I'll stick to TF2, Dystopia, and WoW for now, though.

these are two keygens for d2 and d2LoD, maybe that'll help people get signed on.

So, my game works, but my D2 and LoD discs are long since vanished, I got the iso files (I own the game, just not the discs), and I have them mounted on a virtual drive, but it seems that ES won't acknowledge the fact that I have them mounted on a virtual drive and it wants the CD in the disc drive. How do I fix this?

do you have the LoD disc mounted or the D2 play disc?

my Daemon Tools takes my LoD discs fine.

Might be you need Daemon Tools specifically. I have the same problem with my UltraISO virtual drive.

Well, I downloaded Daemon Tools and tried mounting with that instead. And the same thing happened. It acts like it is loading something, but then nothing loads. I have tried mounting both the play disc and the LoD disc and nothing happens with either one, only when trying to run ES. They work in Daemon tools, but I can't load up ES at all.

I got no idea, try burning the ISO to disc and throwing it in your physical drive.

on an unrelated note, i discovered the lightning build for barbs is seriously OP

This happens a lot on old games. Sometimes it works to name the viritual disc drive what your real drive is named now. So if your drive is D: and the daemon drive is E:, rename the E: to D: and the D: to E:

That might work.

I thought to do that too and it seems that Daemon Tools and vista won't let me do that. I guess I'll just have to scrounge for the physical copy. I know that the LoD disc is SOMEWHERE.

Sounds like fun.  I've been looking for a reason to play this again before D3 comes out.  Stormur, you got PM.
