I'm very much looking forward to this week.
-
3 hours, 8 minutes - I'll check back tomorrow..
-
This Post is to allow me to get E-Mail notifications.

This post was set by the Puppys who wish for bones.
I think Faye should do Yoga.
-
Damnit, Tybalt, you should've waited another week. (Not replying in that thread, hoping it just goes away for now.)
-
This post was set by the Puppys who wish for bones.
I think Faye should do Yoga.
I think Faye should do heavy dieting.

No need. Genocide is the most exhausting activity one can partake in, next to soccer. Her wrath'll outdo the muffins.

Hannelore's not aiming high enough. If she'd snap properly, there wouldn't be anyone left to write her epitaph.
-
Is it bad when I read the comic, and my first reaction is:
 Oh crap, the Hanten shippers are gonna go nuts at the pancakes.
-
As for the comic; who doesn't love pancakes? And Marten's just having a "coulda been" moment, but it does open up thoughts in most of us. What if we had hooked up with that hot guy/girl at the concert, or gotten the nerve to send in the demo tape to some record producer?
As for other crap; Whoa, new site design! I like the fonts and the layout, as it looks a bit cleaner and organized, but why the blue and orange? I just am not one for color combos like that.

I honestly wasn't aware that Hanten shippers existed. I thought Hanners was only shipped with Tai and, in the case of Heavyoak...Heavyoak.
-
I really like the new design. Its different, and differnet is almost always good.
As for the comic, who knows maybe seeing Hanner's predicament will inspire Marten to succeed with his dreams and in the next comic, he'll be banging groupies left and right!
Hey, I can dream right?...Right?...Anyone?
-
I'm very much looking forward to this week.
Ditto.
*Paces impatiently*
Only 22 hours until the next post....(haha)
-
Marten's expression in the second-to-last panel is pretty awesome.
-
I really think thoughts of mass murder are cured by Pancakes.
BTW, I love Hanners expression in the second to last panel.
-
For some reason this comic made me think about what a Marten-Hanners relationship would be like. Anyone else think they'd make a cute couple?
(aside from Hanners freaking out over the thought of body contact or saliva exchange, probably)
-
We're not two steps ahead of you. We're two miles ahead of you. In fact, we've gone across borders, developed colonies in strange new worlds, and entire civilizations have been built, ahead of you.

Pancakes Rule.
Tacos Rule.
Now if only Sven,Faye,Raven,Dora,Hanners,Marten,Pinsize,Winslow,Steve and that one Agent would all just eat a nice meal with one another.
-

HIS EYES zomg.

Maybe they are a particular school's colors...?
-
That's not such a bad epitatph.
Not a bad epitaph at all.
-
at the death of my WTC. But really, polls.
I tried, dude.
-
What a sad comic today.
-
Poor Hannelore, but a great line. And Marten's expression. But isn't she the scion of a mad scientist and a tycoon? You'd think that make quite a start in life.
I really like the new design. Its different, and differnet is almost always good.

Hey, I can dream right?...Right?...Anyone?
Not in the next comic, it'll take him a while a build a following. So in the comic's timescale, about 2015.
-
Damn, could Marten have looked even more pitiful in there? I swear, next thing he'd be around her shoulders, sobbing "I'm so sorreeheeheehee!" But then there were pancakes.
-
Last time Hanners had anything to do with pancakes in the strip was right after that Sven/Faye thing.
Shall I go get EOD on the phone while we wait?
-
awww this one made me feel bad for hanners >.< it's not nice being messed up. that would be an awesome epitaph though i'd love it
mine would probably be "yeah she was nice" how lame I think i'd rather she went nuclear on our asses
-
It is true that Marten probably won't ever ascend to 'indie god' status, but it's also true that he's never made a serious effort to do so. A lot of people who complain their life didn't turn out the way they planned didn't really try.
It is still possible that he could. Nick Cave has got to be like 60. Rodney Dangerfield didn't start comedy till he was in his 40s. And Marten, a guy in his 20s, is saying it's 'too late'? That sounds to me like an excuse for failure.
-
All I can think when reading this strip of is my possible epitaph: "Grade THIS, you motherless bastard!" Or something to that effect. In other words, I hope to be, ah, missed.
I remember reading one of ERB's books a few years back, in which one character remarks, "If a man doesn't make his mark by the time he's thirty, he never will." I was depressed for weeks afterwards.
Then I remembered that most people had a lower life expectancy at the turn of the 19th century. Cheered me right up.
But Marten isn't even thirty, is he?
-
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Hanners DAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
-
Awww poor Hanners is right. But then again my epitaph would probably read, "She was very bright but didn't apply herself." ;)
That's what all the teachers said...pretty accurate.
-
ah man hanner's and marten's sentiments are exactly the two voices that shout at each other as I'm trying to fall asleep at night. But then I guess life is supposed to be terrifying like that. What if hanners snapped and it was all kinds of evil-genius-awesome?
-
Well, that went about as well as it could have.
Poor both of them. :|
-
Her face in panel four is just about the saddest thing.
-
Well, that went about as well as it could have.
That was originally going to be Sven's line in the last panel, but I felt a 10pt "awesome" was more evocative.
-
Even in a comic, a break-up is a sad thing to watch :-(
-
Well, that went about as well as it could have.
That was originally going to be Sven's line in the last panel, but I felt a 10pt "awesome" was more evocative.
It was. Kudos!
And if there's a bright side to all of this, it's that Sven should be able to make bank. He's now in the perfect frame of reference to write mega-selling country music.
-
Crushed Faye is crushed.
I expect alcohol and relapses. She'll be a mess.
Sven, off to the shame corner with you. Dumbfuck.
-
THE PUNISHMENT FOR TWO-TIMING IN THIS STATE IS: INCREDIBLE DEATH.
THOU SHALT NOT TWO-TIME LADIES. THAT IS TERRIBLE.
-
Oh god this is so sad that I actually logged in to post echo sentiments oh god D:
-
What if hanners snapped and it was all kinds of evil-genius-awesome?
The real question is, which weapon would best suit Hanners if she was to, as they say, "go for the high score"?
-
...And Sven's shirt is exceedingly appropriate. :(
-
Well, atleast he didn't try to sleep with her first.
... "oh by the way hunny, thanks, that was lovely, but lastnight...."
Uggghh. I'm a bit cynical at times.
-
Well Faye didn't kill him, but who is going to stop Dora from murdering him when she finds out?
-
Well, Glad to see Sven do something that he should have done a long time ago with other women. From personal experience, making an instant decision, or just saying something and walking away forcing yourself not to think about what you are saying, is the easiest way to tell someone something very difficult. (you get the knack for it after awhile).
-
The last four panels. Oh jeez. :(
-
I don't usually post in this part of the forum but I did want to just say that this is probably my favorite comic in... well, maybe years.
-
Aawww, faye :(
I'm glad she didn't go psycho on him. Looks like this made him feel a whole lot worse. I wonder what will happen now? Do you think either of them will tell the others what happened?
How much do you wanna bet that Jeph will do a pintsize comic or something tomorrow :p
-
Her face in panel four is just about the saddest thing.
No kidding.
Well-drawn.
:(
-
That is ....sad...I just want to hug them both
-
Jeph said once that he's not particularly good at facial expressions.
I disagree.
-
Poor...
Well..
Everybody. :|
-
Hmmmmmmmmm.
I wonder what Steve's up to right now?
-
Today's comic may just be one of the saddest things I have ever seen.
-
Oh! That's so sad...she looks so heartbroken...
-
D'awwww.....
-
Hmmmmmmmmm.
I wonder what Steve's up to right now?
My guess? Drinking the rest of the vodka.
-
Jeph is actually VERY good at expressions, despite his own opinions. Marty's face yesterday and Faye's today make me want to go on a mass hugging spree!
-
Q_Q
-
. . . . . . . . . . . . DAMN!! . . . . . . . . . . . .
Just .....
Damn!
What else CAN you say??!!!
Dora's gonna kill him!!
-
I feel the need to change my avatar now...
"Faye Has Just Seen...."
"Her Heart Get Smooshed."
:( Well done, but, very sad. Even Sven knows she's affected by it due to lack of greivous bodily harm.
-
!_!
Comparing her face in the first panel and then in the fourth is heartbreaking. She seems like she really was hoping that he missed her.
-
Does anyone get the feeling Faye may shock us all and end up being really hurt by svens actions rather than mad? I feel like shes going to end up showing some actual vulnerability.
Called it!
whoooo! whoo.....
Aw I made myself sad. :(
-
...this strip made me too sad to appropriately comment it.
-
Jeph said once that he's not particularly good at facial expressions.
I disagree.
Well, him thinking he was bad at it then is probably why he's so good at it now. Yay for practice!
Oh, my heart.
-
I am a bit surprised about Faye's reactions. Damn, people are sometimes so hard to understand.
Today's comic may just be one of the saddest things I have ever seen.
Nah, sorry, nope, not at all. Not compared to yesterday's.
Yesterdays comic was super sad.
Todays comic, meh, an ill relationship ends. Or maybe not ? Maybe its just a major crisis and they'll find together again.
In EITHER case, both Sven and Faye seem to be able to start new relationships with other people, even if their relationship would really be at an end now.
I really feel a lot sadder for Hanners who might never have a relationship at all.
-
Unfortunate for her so be all excited and let down like that. However, I'm extremely impressed how she handled it and really gives me a whole different opinion on the type of person she is.
-
SO much I want to say, but just can't put it together...
this is just an incredibly sad thing - and bravo Jeph for the evocative comic, and creating characters that people can really relate to and care about.
*sniff* poor Faye...
...and well, i feel bad for Sven too. It can be a difficult thing to learn that not being in control of your life can really f*** up people's lives sometimes.
-
I am pleased at Sven's suffering.
Poor Faye. Hopefully she'll find someone less slut-tastic.
But probably not.
That is all.
-
This comic is so true to life. When people fuck up in a relationship, one reaction is to fear their other half's wrath. To the extent that they forget that they're actually invoking something worse: their SO's pain :(
-
congradulations to Sven for owning up to his actions despite the consequences, and sympathies to Faye.
-
It was only on reread that I noticed Sven in panels 5 and 6 - going from 'I'm gonna die' to 'Is she killing me yet?'
and seconded/thirded/fourthed/whatever on the facial expressions. Who needs dialogue?
And now I have to Google Jeph's song selection.
-
SAD
At least he told her...may this be because he genuinely cares about her?
yeah yeah if he cared about her he wouldn't have cheated but seriously...
GAW POOR FAYE. She looked so disappointed!
It made me want to cry.
-
poor faye! I want to see what happens theres hours till the next comic lol i see lots of alcohol and tears in the near future of QC
-
Very good strip, so full of nuances..
Faye pulling up her zipper again before leaving? --> :c
Cue the remorse, change of ways, forgiveness and reunion. Cue it, dammit! >:O
-
I am pleased at Sven's suffering.
If he actually does suffer, then I'm not happy about it.
My problem with and objection about Sven is that he probably wont.
-
I like that they didn't go with the obvious reaction of her having a screaming bitchout...that would have been too easy. This works much better (in terms of making the reader feel for Faye).
Whoever said that Dora is going to fucking rip him a new one has got that 100% right....I didn't even think of the Dora factor until now.
-
I don't think she'll rip him a new one as much as she will shove the Malaysian battle spatula so far up the one he already has that he'll have to go to the dentist to get it extracted.
-
Wow. That was good and sad. I liked it.
-
SAD
At least he told her...may this be because he genuinely cares about her?
yeah yeah if he cared about her he wouldn't have cheated but seriously...
GAW POOR FAYE. She looked so disappointed!
It made me want to cry.
I think the fact that she was too upset to muster the energy to even hit him was the most upsetting.
I think she had, in turn, started to genuinely care about him, maybe because what they are/were in can't be classified as a "relationship," so it doesn't put any pressure on her, emotionally.
Thing is, it doesn't on him, either, so...
:/
I'm thinking maybe she tries to hook up with Marten, on the rebound? (Only maybe, though...)
I hope everything turns out okay. Which is kind of sad, they aren't real
-
There is a pun to be made about Sven's shirt, I just can't decide what it should be. And as sad as this was, I'm glad that it happened because I've still never liked this couple.
-
I haven't posted since the Sven-Faye... well, it was before the hookup. Foreshadowing the hookup.
I'm wondering if Sven told her because he cares about her or just because his conscience of an intern made him feel like crap about keeping it from her.
Faye's reaction to Sven's infidelity is very telling. What's the point of beating sense into someone when you're no longer invested in him/her? Knowing her ways, there will probably be alcohol. It would be more worrisome if there wasn't. Someone already mentioned her being totally blasé, and if that's true I can see her telling Dora not to bother destroying Sven. And didn't she warn her about him? Rebound? Eh, doesn't seem likely, to me. After something like that, she probably feels too... anti-hookup to bother... hooking up with somebody. Unless she's drunk and stupid.
Which is entirely possible.
I'd hypothesize about Sven, but I have no frikkin' clue. Maybe affected by this, but brushes it off and goes on a string of blonde one-night-stands.
...
And then when nobody expects it...
Faye punches him in the nads!
Everybody wins.
-
I tend to think he would have weasiled out of telling her and it would have bit him upon both cheeks. Remember The fight Marten and Dora got into over not being honest? I tend to think Marten would be drawn to the drama of busting Sven...
-
Good strip today, makes me eager for tomorrow!
What worries me is just how many people here are focusing on Dora or Faye getting violent with Sven. All (I think...) of the times we've seen violence between main characters in QC before it's been as part of a joke or as joking threats. This little arc doesn't strike me as one that's going to be crammed full of violence-gags...
-
Oh, Sven, you're facing the music* wonderfully. At least until you cringe in fear of your beating.
Superb.
This is awful of me, but I lmao at that part of this strip. It says volumes, to me, about Sven's maturity. And anyone (including Jeph himself, I suppose) who thinks Jeph can't do facial expressions is blind. Rarely, here and elsewhere in QC, have I seen so much conveyed by so little. Let's face it, Jeph uses fairly minimal lines to draw the characters' faces, but gets, to me, a full range of emotion in them nonetheless. Take this strip: Faye happy, Sven trying to decide what to do, then deciding to take the music. And Faye then looking like a whipped puppy as Sven cringes for the beating he probably wants more than that expression.
I'll say something else: nobody who's engaged in casual sex gets the look Faye has in panel 4. It makes me feel bad for her, and evil that I recently said I wished she'd get run down by a semi (even though I was referring to the pre "The Talk" Faye). And all with no dialogue.
So Jeph's managed to make me laugh and feel bad all in one strip, nay, in one freakin' panel. So don't tell me he doesn't get much into the faces. No, it's not Neal Adams or Joe Orlando, but to me, that's a different sort of drawing then this. This art fits the material, and it's damned good.
*I detest the phrase "Man up." Sounds like either an erection or baseball, neither of which seems relevant.
-
one word....awesome.
-
if this were a romantic movie, sven would realize he fucked up the one good thing in his life, feel terrible, and hatch some scheme to express his devotion (publicly?) and win her back.
the sad thing is, I have been programmed (stupid fucking disney movies at a young impressionable age) to secretly root for this scenario. bleh.
-
Excellent comic. Jeph, you've made me care about Faye again, and I finally like Sven! Woohoo!
-
I'll admit it. I got a little misty reading this one. Jeph really nailed the facial expressions and Sven's last line was brilliant. I love the way Faye reacted to what Sven told her. I posted in another thread thinking that, if Faye had reacted the way Sven expected her to, he could have gotten defensive and then told himself "good riddance" when she finally walked out. This way he had to deal with the fact that he really hurt her and that she meant what she said about being gone.
-
MY PREDICTIONS FOR DEPRESSING COMIC WEEK:
Wednesday: Faye goes to be comforted by Dora after being crushed by Sven. General crying/sadness, mentions how lucky Dora is to have Marten who wouldn't ever ever do that. Dora has her own personal "big reveal," that she's actually just paranoid and has no reason to be so irrational towards Marten. (probably shown by just a look of dawning comprehension on her face).
Thursday: Marten and Dora see each other (I dunno, Marten shows up or something) and Dora's all "OMG I'VE FINALLY REALIZED I WAS BEING A BITCH I LOVE YOU MARTEN" buuuuut...Marten, as a result of realizing his life needs a change and Dora has a tendency to treat him like crap for no reason when she gets paranoid...gives her the "We need to stop seeing each other" speech.
Friday Possibility A: Marten explains his reasoning, and the strip ends with Marten walking down the street with his thumb out and Pintsize on his back, Hulk-style. QC ends, all relationships having been properly shattered. We live out the rest of our lives with a hole in our hearts.
Friday Possibility B: IT WAS ALL A DREAM
-
Jeph tortures his characters on a pure Dickensian scale. Damn the man!
I'm leaning toward the "Sven has the big realization/Faye has the big realization" path here. I mean, Faye's been saying all along she doesn't want a relationship, she isn't ready for a relationship, she can't have a relationship...and here she is, realizing that she really, really, really wants a relationship. And Sven -- he has had another first. He confesses, the girl goes away, AND HE ISN'T HAPPY. It would only have been better if he'd said "and the whole time, I kept thinking of you and how I shouldn't be doing it, and I've never HAD those thoughts before." I mean, he is showing signs of really caring about Faye. That's gotta be brand new to him. Like any new thing, he's gonna fuck it up a few times before he gets it right.
I'm half expecting that when Faye tells Dora, Dora will be dumbstruck that Sven actually told her the truth and didn't try any of his old, slimy denials and escapes.
I'm gonna be hopeful here that Sven and Faye will eventually talk and tell each other the truth, because, really, I'm an optimist. I know that it's possible (from a been there, done that, still with it standpoint) for a relationship to recover from shit like this if there's anything good in it in the first place, but it is a lot of work. I hope, wish, pray, want, beg that they are up for it. I'd like to see them start over with a real relationship. They are young yet, and this may not be a forever thing, but it can be good for what it is.
Then again, maybe Faye just walked outside to get a club or a gun or something.
-
^^What she said....'cept maybe the club part. If Faye was going to get violent (which I'm happy she didn't because it would be inappropriate and out of context) she would have already.
if this were a romantic movie, sven would realize he fucked up the one good thing in his life, feel terrible, and hatch some scheme to express his devotion (publicly?) and win her back.
the sad thing is, I have been programmed (stupid fucking disney movies at a young impressionable age) to secretly root for this scenario. bleh.
Me too. I hate wanting it but I knew I would feel unreasonably bad for these characters...I just want them to be HAPPY damnit. Just for a few strips!! I really enjoy the Sven/Faye dynamic in the comic. It's a good foil relationship for Marten/Dora and it's helped to keep another male in the comic. QC has been a male or two short as I am sure everyone's noticed. Steve, Jimbo and even Angus would be refreshing perspectives after all the ladies.
And where is Wil?? He needs to come back and help Sven get Faye back with some of that sexy poetry! :D
-
Crushed Faye is crushed.

Damn right! SO DO I!!! WOOHOO!!!
YOU ROCK, JEPH!!!
YOU ROCK!!
The Glenlivet, HERE I COME!!

Poor Faye,I think she was starting to like Sven for more than just a booty call. I hope he realizes that he has feeling for her too. (I hope he dose have feelings for her)
Like i have stated before, I hope they end up as a couple
-
One thing to consider, I don't think the Marten/Hannelore subplot is an accident. Faye is probably on the way home to talk with Marten, or at least to gain strength from his dependable presence even if she doesn't tell him, but she's going to find an empty apartment (well, Pintsize is there, and perhaps is about to create the most monumental example of his performance art ever). Nothing to ratchet up the sadness like having nobody to turn to. I don't think Dora is the shoulder Faye wants right now.
-
!_!
Comparing her face in the first panel and then in the fourth is heartbreaking. She seems like she really was hoping that he missed her.
Pretty much what I was going to say. Anyone who has suddenly been having a nice day and completely oblivious to what is going to happen next.. its a hard cliff to fall from when someone throws that kind of info at you.
-
!_!

And if he had missed her, I think they would have become a steady item. Sven and Faye came within a few hours of being a "real" couple, and then Sven blew it. It's agonizing to think how close Sven and Faye, both emotionally damaged in their own ways, came to happiness. Now they have to start over.
Sven can start by framing his "1000 hurts" t-shirt as a reminder of how much a shit he can be.
-

I agree. There is no way Faye will go to Dora right now...Dora hated this relationship from the beginning. She knew it was a bad idea and threatened Sven because of it. Faye won't want to go tell Dora that she was right. Faye will want to turn to Marten, the first person she opened up to since her father's suicide. Assuming she does go home, it's probable that marten won't be there as Jimor pointed out. She'll kick herself for passing Marten up and push away from Dora even more. There's going to be a spew of emotions on all character accounts here, real soon.
Hannelore, FTW, as usual. She has a little nest in my heart.
-
No telling what Faye will go off and do, but one thing is nearly certain - there will be alcohol involved. To begin with, alcohol seems to be the QC characters' #1 way of dealing with relationship explodey-ness. To end with, alcohol has traditionally been Faye's #1 way of dealing with things she doesn't want to actually face, and I think this qualifies.
The real question in my mind is where Sven will go from here. I think he genuinely feels like shit about it, whereas he definitely wouldn't have before meeting Faye. I just don't think he really knows what to do about it.
The best part about this is that technically, he didn't do anything wrong. He wasn't in a relationship with Faye, and he never agreed to monogamy. She accepted that with the caveat that if/when he did bang someone else, she was out of there. End result being (predictably, because I've actually seen this happen to friends in real life) he *did* bang someone else, and she *did* leave, but what neither one realized was that they had opened up their hearts to one another and the real result was (drumroll....) 1000 hurts.
-
Looking at it again, I can see that Sven would have rather taken the beating rather than what Faye did - Just walk out.
Right now. I think he feels lower than a Cardassian Gunrunner.
-
If I was Faye I would NOT go home. The last thing I would want to see right now would be Dora and Marten being cute. I say she heads to either Hanner's apartment or a bar. Or maybe, if she finds that Hannelore is still out with Marten, she walks to Penny's or Raven's. Anything to avoid going home, really.
-
this really makes me curious about wether Angus will make an appearance....
i think that Faye feels very rejected, and might want to rebound with someone who makes her feel desired ie: angus.
-

She knows Dora's still at work since she let Faye leave early, so this would be the time to catch Marten without her around, assuming this is what Faye wants to do. Even if this isn't her intention, we're still going to have lost puppy syndrome here.
What I "fear" though is another one of those "I don't know why I jerked the steering wheel to the left" moments, but I don't think Jeph wants this to get THAT dark right now. The situation as character study is more than enough going on right now.
-
perhaps she shall follow in the footsteps of her father? Wait, that led to suicide, didn't it?
-
I just realized the way the first panel's worded.... Sven specifically called Faye and asked her to come over, didn't he?
Am I dense for not noticing that?
and oh, new twitter post (http://twitter.com/svenbianchi) from Sven.

Definitely my thoughts as well.
Just as well, seeing how Faye responds with no one to lean on will tell me if she's the same girl from the first thirty strips or has finally evolved a little.
-
Looking at it again, I can see that Sven would have rather taken the beating rather than what Faye did - Just walk out.
It's like how when you were a kid and you did something wrong, and your parents were just "disappointed" rather than angry, that was about a thousand times worse.
-
and oh, new twitter post (http://twitter.com/svenbianchi) from Sven.
What does "@_@" mean? I'm not up on these things.
-
And Sven learns the truth of his own words:
"I... I didn't realize..."
"That the customers you treat like crap are actual people?"
Except with girls instead of customers.
-

And also that it's actually applicable to this situation instead of being a bunch of hooey.

I haven't been paying as much attention to QC the past week and a half, for some reason. But I was like, oh, hey, I haven't checked it out today, *click*.
.....and then cue the utter sadness, seriously. I mean. For both Sven and Faye. I mean, they were so good for each other, even if they didn't act like it.
Sven's "Awesome." was so audible.
The disappointment leaped right off from Faye, so it wasn't just an "Oh, ouch for her," it was "Oh, God, that hurts."
...But that's just me, maybe.
I wonder how this is going to end up...
-
I know it's almost a month after the Burns 250th birthday bash, but this (http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/552.htm) came to mind. The particularly relevant bit:
O would some Power the gift to give us
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us...
I know from personal experience that I spend most of my time in a protective bubble of self-regard: I think I'm a generally good guy. I have my faults, I know, but overall I'm OK. Occasionally, I do something particularly stupid and someone calls me on it. The bubble bursts, and I see what a heel I can be.
It's a terrible thing to realize and get your nose rubbed in. It can help you grow as a human being, though.
-
Stop it; I'm almost too drunk to drive and I'd need more alcohol for that. I'm thinking Bacardi 151 or some Mount Gay.
this really makes me curious about wether Angus will make an appearance....
i think that Faye feels very rejected, and might want to rebound with someone who makes her feel desired ie: angus.
Oh, I hope so. She needs a one-night-stand she'll regret with a guy who adores her so she can treat him like shit too.
Hopefully I'll be sober again before THAT happens so I can restock the liquor cabinet. Woo hoo.
For the record...Glenlivet lives up to its "Smooth Smoky" reputation. Woo...
It's good.
It's amber.
It's smooooooooth.
perhaps she shall follow in the footsteps of her father? Wait, that led to suicide, didn't it?
Yes, and that would suck. She hasn't suffered enough and her suicide would cheat me of my fun.
The ultimate Schadenfreude blue-balls.
It's a terrible thing to realize and get your nose rubbed in. It can help you grow as a human being, though.
Just so it don't happen too much; Happens too much and you start to intentionally act like the heel everyone expects you to and suddenly you wake up one morning and don't like yourself anymore.
Some people wonder how they got that way.
I know how I got this way. The hard part is figuring out how to get back. Or even knowing if I want to.
Faye needs to burn some more. Maybe Jeph will set fire to her or something.

Jesus Christ, Skawronska, give it a rest.
-
wow. Amazing comic. I rarely post here, but todays really merited a comment. I feel so sorry for both of them. Kudos Jeph. Lord knows what's going to happen next.
-
i wonder if fay will tell anybody about...at least for now...i can see her wallowing in self-pity of course, but telling dora and martin would be awkward, raven would be...interesting, and i don't know how helpful hannelore would be...
-
New comic.
Sheer awesomeness.
That is all.
-
Is that the college girl that asked Marten out, in the background?
-
Holy crap where did all those people come from?
And why are they all walking by themselves? (with the exception of the red head girl and that dude)
Was this Jeph's excuse to make a whole bunch of facial expressions?
-
Not unless she suddenly de-aged by eight years. Although that would be hilarious.
Also, hooray for Faye taking it like a human being. Obviously this wasn't going to be a good day, but better profane invective than spiraling depression.
-
Today's comic is the definition of awesome.
Just, totally.
-
Last panel. The look on the little girl's face is amazing. Everyone else looks surprised or worried; she looks appalled.
-
At least she's letting it out now rather than taking it out on Marten or Dora later. Too bad it had to be in public but at least she's not running around with her underpants on her head while toting a bottle of Canadian Mist.
On a side note: Those signs represent 99% of my shopping experiences in the past few years. All that's missing is one that says "We're out of whatever you're looking for!"
-
He would have been a much bigger asshole to not tell her and have her find out via the intern or someone else. I know she feels hurt, but it was clearly not monogamous from the beginning...I think she's overreacting a bit.
-
Given it's Faye we're talking about here, this is probably the healthiest attitude she could be expected to take.
All that could make this funnier, though, is if she just kept on walking, oblivious to the crowd frozen in shock around her.
-
Well, she's ok, there was no visible vein popping out anywhere.
Again, this just shows me that she was more emotionally involved with Sven than she was letting on.
Lets face it, she was going to react in one of two ways. If she doesn't have any emotional involvement, and the relationship is just what she's been saying it is, she won't care about this beyond the physical. That is, she'd be annoyed but not angry, because he'd only be living down to her expectations. On the other hand, if she's more emotionally involved than she's let on, she's going to be hurt and angry because she'll feel cheated on. Since that's what we're seeing, I think my initial appraisal was valid.
-
Does that police officer look alot like Steve to anyone else?
-
cue next week's comic where marten goes over to sven's house to tell him off.
Finds sven, feral beard, mumblin' about there being tequila monsters afoot.
oh tequila monster, its been too long.
i'm honestly not trying to push svaye, or fayen or whatever we're calling them now, but i do think there's an opportunity for some actual sven-character-reformation.
i get the impression that he's kindof shocked at this new sensation that is feeling guilty for sleeping with a second woman.
-
I do that ALL the time. Accidentally shouting expletives in public is really cathartic.
-
That police officer looks way too much like steve.
-
Well . . . . I knew it had to come out sometime, but did it have to come out in the middle of the street?!
I love the expression on everyone's faces. Especially Faye's embarrassed look.
I wonder if Officer Steve will escort her ti CoD?
Love the Shop Signs.
-
Love the Shop Signs.
"bad art *AND* hemp clothing? honey, we HAVE to stop here!"
"not before we go to the 'Stuff You Don't Need' shop first, dear."
-
Poor faye.
Fuh this got funny and sad.
-
the guy with the beard rules. hes my favorite person to ever exist
-
this is just an incredibly sad thing - and bravo Jeph for the evocative comic, and creating characters that people can really relate to and care about....
...and well, i feel bad for Sven too. It can be a difficult thing to learn that not being in control of your life can really f*** up people's lives sometimes.
i'm not kidding when i say i think jeph could've made a great psychologist, whatever (or whoever) these characters are doing, even if it does seem cliche at times (cliches come about from things that are said or happen so often), that they are very easy to relate to. If you ever read through the responses in the forum, there a great number that are simply, "i totally get that," "that happened to me," "i did that to someone," "someone did that to me," "i know exactly how he/she/it feels," etc etc...and its also evident that it effects us deeply because of how we sit here and analyze and care so much about fictional characters in a comic and then proceed to discuss it at great length...and i think that for someone to do that, theyd have to have a pretty good understanding of what people are like....i dont really know what the whole point of my stating that was, but i felt the need to say it haha.
and yeah i agree with that statement about sven...not that it excuses his behavior or anything, but even when you are a person who effs up so regularly that you dont seem to have any self-control you still feel guilty about hurting other people in the process unless youre completely heartless.
-
Honestly, can you stop throwing predictions around what happends next ? Its really annoying to read. I think we can be perfectly sure that Jeff comes up with a good natural way to continue the story.
And no, these are obviously all random people.
if this were a romantic movie, sven would realize he fucked up the one good thing in his life, feel terrible, and hatch some scheme to express his devotion (publicly?) and win her back.
the sad thing is, I have been programmed (stupid fucking disney movies at a young impressionable age) to secretly root for this scenario. bleh.
Oh ?
There are Disney movies which have people that cheat on each other in it ?
And even older ones ? (depending upon how old you are)
Poor Faye,I think she was starting to like Sven for more than just a booty call. I hope he realizes that he has feeling for her too. (I hope he dose have feelings for her)
Sven is still a womanizer and playboy.
These people dont really have feelings for the opposite gender ... as those would collide with their lifestyle, therefore, even if such feelings come up, they are suppressed.
Unless he wants to change his lifestyle, he's not going to mutate into a good boyfriend.
And if Faye wants him back at all ... I know many people who wont.
-

Dude, chill. Seriously. If the worst thing that's happened in your life is some chick leading you on, you've led a pretty charmed life. It's one thing to divert bitterness to a fictional character, but this kind of crap is completely overboard. This comic has dealt with some actual heavy issues, particularly using Faye, so it's going to attract followers (and posters) that have encountered similar situations in their own lives. The kind of stuff you post is not cool. Chill.
-
She is soooo going to talked to by that cop. Considering he seems to be the only character who didn't appear in the previous frames. I think.
-
i'm not kidding when i say i think jeph could've made a great psychologist
AHHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA NO
Love the Shop Signs.
"bad art *AND* hemp clothing? honey, we HAVE to stop here!"

So, you've been to Northampton, then?
-
Another little touch of psychological realism is that delayed reaction. I've been through it -- ended the conversation with civility, even with the other person saying "you're too nice", and then soon after, never mind the details but I felt like Faye looked.
-
I don't think this is going to be the end of the sven/faye business. Sven seems too bothered by this, and faye seems to hurt to just let that be the end of it. They'll either talk and find some way to reconcile this and actually make a put a better definition on this, or they're going to talk it down and split.
Svens chance to actually attempt to salvage this, he already was honest with her, that counts a great deal toward his becoming a better person ( though some of it is thanks to his intern.
People changing overnight is a thing for the romantic comedys and whatnot. Svens made real progress toward parting from his own ways, but he is only human and he made a mistake, knowing full well he was fucked by the end. Now he can either slink back to his old ways or learn something and continue trying to change his lifestyle.
Its safe to say that old sven wouldn't have made it this far, or even been honest with her regardless of intern involvement.
-
Sven and Dora both probably just sensed a great disturbance.
-
... as if dozens of people suddenly wanted to cry out, "WTF was that?!" but were too freaked out to say anything.
-
Sven is still a womanizer and playboy.
Uh, I think the Sven you're talking about ceased to exist quite a number of strips ago.
-
I see Jeph betrays his unfamiliarity with Southerners (U.S., that is) and our ways.
It should be: "Goddam fuckin' shit eatin' douchebag asshole!" :-D
(Douchebag doesn't fit, but Faye has been up Nawth for a while.) The spit's a nice touch.
Next strip, were she in my town, the cop on the right have would hauled Faye away for , to quote Springsteen, "disturbin' the almighty peace."
If not, maybe Faye's going to go back to give Sven that clobbering which I agree with Kugai he wants.
Actually, though, the cussing is a good sign, to me. It indicates someone who suddenly realizes she doesn't deserve this kind of treatment. I think Faye picked Sven for a sex partner, consciously or unconsciously, because she knew something like this was coming, and it's what she 'deserved.' Which explains why Faye couldn't pair up with Marten, and why she kept beating him: Marten wasn't treating her 'correctly,' (ie. he was being nice, respectful, etc.) given the sort of undeserving person Faye felt herself to be.
Looking at it again, I can see that Sven would have rather taken the beating rather than what Faye did - Just walk out.
Right now. I think he feels lower than a Cardassian Gunrunner.
Actually, the Cardassians, as a race, always seemed to me to be the smuggest, most self-satisfied smirking bastards ever to 'grace' a space opera. But maybe you mean from others' perspectives.
-
People changing overnight is a thing for the romantic comedys and whatnot.
This aint no Hollywood movie, man, this is reality.
Or wait ...
-
I thought the police officer looked familiar, he does indeed look like Steve's more lanky brother.
-
So now the question is, "How will the matter be resolved?"
Will:
a. Faye go back and let Sven have it, either verbally or physically;
b. Sven go to Faye and apologize;
c. Faye go to one of her friends for support;
d. Sven go to his friends for support;
e. Faye get a stern talking to by the nice constable for creating a disturbance;
f. Faye attempt to deal with what she'll see as a betrayal by a male that she cares about, withdraw further into a shell of sarcasm, cynicism and hurt feelings and start a true downward spiral accellerated by seeing the positive relationships of Dora/Marten, and Penny/Wil and visions of Gary the Pterodactyl;
g. Any combination of the above;
h. None of the above; or
i. Jeph do whatever he wants (it is his story after all, we're just along for the ride).
Thanks for producing this (and the forum) Mr. Jacques.
-
Honestly, can you stop throwing predictions around what happends next ? Its really annoying to read. I think we can be perfectly sure that Jeff comes up with a good natural way to continue the story.
...stop throwing around predictions? Hi, welcome to the WCT, have you been here before?

I know she feels hurt, but it was clearly not monogamous from the beginning...I think she's overreacting a bit.
It was monogamous -- it's just that it was a hook-up, not a relationship. Like practice dating for two people who are "not ready" or "not capable" of having real relationships due to their own psychological problems. So, no, they weren't going out to eat, or going to the movies, or holding hands, or doing anything that anyone in society would call "a date." I doubt people who saw the two of them together in public thought, "They're dating." But the sex was monogamous sex, which indicates that Sven is -- at least for a few months -- capable of being sexually monogamous.
Sven managed to stay true to Faye sexually for a surprisingly long time (OK, well it was surprising TO ME), considering that he's "such a man-whore" and all that. Also, Faye managed to stay in what was ALMOST a relationship for a pretty long time, considering her fears of getting close to other people. I think after a few months, both of them started getting their hopes up - "Hey, this isn't so bad, maybe I can actually handle this." Sven was the first one to blow it, but it could've just as easily been Faye. They've both got their issues. We know this.
Based on how shitty Sven feels, he may discover that he prefers monogamy. Not necessarily with Faye, just, in life. Clearly he's managed to keep up not sleeping around for a little while and it apparently hasn't been THAT bad. So ... who knows? I'm not about to root for the two of them to "get back together" because I'm not sure it's a good idea, but this "practice relationship" was probably a good idea for both of them to learn from. Maybe after this, they might be ready for real relationships with other people.
-
i see someone might be going to jail tonight.
or the cop might just rub pepper in her mouth for swearing.
-
f. Faye attempt to deal with what she'll see as a betrayal by a male that she cares about, withdraw further into a shell of sarcasm, cynicism and hurt feelings and start a true downward spiral accellerated by seeing the positive relationships of Dora/Marten, and Penny/Wil and visions of Gary the Pterodactyl;
Betting it'll be pretty much this.
-

Oh, I hope to hell not. First, I've already lived that (well, sans the Pterodactyl) and it is some major boring shit and second, she's already done that, why run repeats? I'm voting for a little development, some smidgen of personal growth, maybe even a touch of maturing. Hey, it happens occasionally.
She's a good Suthern gal -- she has the grace to look appalled at her own public actions.
*sigh* I'm gonna go watch a bunch of old romance movies where everything has a happy ending. I love fantasy.
-
You know, if you squint really hard at the situation, you could almost make a case for this all being Faye's fault.
After all, Sven did invite her to come with him. If she really cared for him in proportion to the reaction she is now having, she might have gritted her teeth and went along with him in an attempt to share his interests. And if she had done so, this extracurricular hanky-panky would likely have never occurred. Instead, she elected to abandon him and to engage in an evening of unhealthy drunkenness and sexual harassment of the mentally ill.

that's ridiculous, HE IS NOT A CHILD he is an adult by this age he should have the mental ability to make a discision to not sleep with another girl wether faye was there or not.
you are basically comparing this man (who's in his mid - late 20's i think) to a child who crosses the road and gets knocked down by a car because his mother wasn't there to hold his hand and help him across the street. also it only seems to me that it's only in the last week or so that she's coming to terms with how she feels for sven and prehaps it's only now he's actually hurt her she really gets how much she likes him?
i don't think there is any way you can blame faye at all for this she laid down the rules to him and now she's doing what she promised she'd do i.e. you sleep with someone else and i'm gone
-
Yeeeeah, bunnyThor, I'm definitely in agreement with Shaztastic on this one. Basically you're saying that women who don't follow the boys they're pursuing around constantly should "expect" these boys to pursue other women. Because ... men can't be trusted to make any decisions on their own, and as soon as they see tits, they're hard-wired to Tap That. And women need to play baby-sitter in order to hold down any type of monogamous relationship, even just a sexual one. Are you SURE that's a road you want to go down?
I know Sven's a "man-whore" and all, but as I already pointed out in my previous post, he DID manage to stay sexually monogamous with Faye for a surprisingly long time (a few months has gotta count for YEARS in Sven-time). Faye is entitled to go have some harmless fun with friends without checking up on him. Also, it's not like she was just drinking herself into oblivion in a fit of depression ... she was playing games with several of her friends. Also, given that Sven had managed to stay true to her thus far, why on earth should she have expected he'd stop?
It seemed pretty random to me, actually. Why Gina Riversmith, and more importantly, why now? Chances are Sven was in similar situations several times over the past few months and managed to resist ... I can't figure out why he got bored NOW as opposed to earlier or later. Maybe Gina was a little more persistent in her seductions than previous temptresses.
-
i think its more of a question as to whether she's surprised and angry or just angry.
if the former, then it is her fault.
sven said multiple times he was a tool, and in the conversation where she laid down her ultimatum, he never agreed to abide by it.
that said, she has every right to be angry, sven was a dick.
-

J. Faye hooks up with the "nice constable"...and he gives her a *REAL* tongue-lashing!

sven said multiple times he was a tool, and in the conversation where she laid down her ultimatum, he never agreed to abide by it.

Good call.
I think there was some misconstruing of meaning above, though -- As has been pointed out ad nauseum, Sven never agreed to be exclusive -- Faye set that rule. They didn't share social activities like most relationships -- they had sex with each other with as little emotion as they could manage. I won't lay blame either way, because i don't think there really is a "fault" here in what happened so much as fault for what did not happen -- a lack of communication about what was really going on. If Faye wanted a regular, monogamous relationship, she should have put in the time one does in a relationship -- not tagging along to guard dog her man, but in trying to be a part of his life. She said at least once that seeing Sven in a social situation wasn't something she was ready to do, and he did make the invitation.
It's almost as if she set up a silent contract with Sven that he would be her faithful sex toy and she could continue pretending she didn't care, only he didn't sign on to that. As for Sven, I think he's actually in his first situation where he cares about a woman he's slept with. That's got to be world rattling for his Lothario self image. He's hurt someone and he CARES about it. Up to now, when he's hurt someone, he only cared about how it would affect him. Big change there. I think they are both surprised how much they cared about what was happening, and the shock of that is as much of the pain as anything else.
Just my opinion.
-
You know, I'm not saying Sven handled this situation correctly or sensitively, but what did Faye expect?
She sleeps with a man with an admitted reputation as a womanizer. She is very clear that she does not consider it to be a relationship. She tells him not to sleep with other women and he says straight to her 'That's not ok'. She continues to sleep with him. What exactly did she expect? If Sven agreed to be exclusive it'd be one thing, but he was very clear that was not the case.
Heck, Faye calls to ask him out on a date, he says 'No thanks, but wanna fuck?' And she comes over. She either really loves conflict, or is a walking geyser of cognitive dissonance.
-
Man, Steve's hair has gotten pretty wild.
-
Interesting, this never happens to me, being from the same part of the south as faye. Earlier today, some woman did nearly the exact same thing, except when buying groceries. Meh.
I think that Faye won't be "jailed" for anything, as cussing outloud in a public space isn't illegal (except directly at an officer or with a combined threat), however her embarassment will only serve to piss her off more at Sven.
-

Actually, she could get arrested for disturbing the peace if anyone calls her out on it.
I really don't think Jeph would throw that in there though.
-
...
This is Jeph we're talking about. he's not above it.
You can't picture faye in a jail cell, when Martin and Dora walk in to bai lher out, find out why she's there, and Dora gets to cussin and ends up sitting next to Faye?
-
that's ridiculous
Yeeeeah, bunnyThor, I'm definitely in agreement with Shaztastic on this one.
Wow.
That post was actually taken seriously? :?
Obviously, I have my hyperbole threshold set far too low for this forum.
I don't think it's really in dispute that no one is responsible for Sven's dumbassery except Sven.

lol BunnyThor. Sexual Harassment of the mentally ill

Irony has a tough time around here, too. You did say severe squinting was necessary.
Blamethrowing is popular, and easy, but rarely accurate.

This would be a good time for Penny to spring for pizza. Dora looks about ready to kill.
-
nice.
-
This would be a good time for Penny to spring for pizza. Dora looks about ready to kill.
No way, she's still too shocked to have thoughts of murder. But give her 2 minutes...
Honestly? I feel bad for Penny. What was that quote?
"Being right too soon is socially unacceptable." -Robert A. Heinlein
-
Dear god, Dora's look in that last panel.
That stare could kill a man where he stood, inside of his massive tank.
Poor Penny.
-
The expressions in the last panel are GOLD.
*amused at the juxtaposition between Dora's LAZER EYES face and the LOL poster*
-
Ah, I've come close to saying stuff almost that bad before.
Luckily, I was able to stop myself before I made an ass out of myself.
Edit: Also, missing dialog arrow for Dora in panel 2.
-
Poor Faye. Sometimes we think we can be logical and detached and wear our big girl Underroos but we just CAN'T. There's a streak of stubborn optimism in Faye. Part of her knew she was going to get burned but part of her thought "maybe... just maybe..." This is what happens when our heart collides with our head. It's a dizzying collision that leaves you nauseated and covered in bloody bandages. I don't really think she ever thought of Sven as a temporary thing. I think she genuinely liked him. I think he genuinely liked her but he's just not any good at controlling his impulses. Sad.
I liked Dora's death eyes in that last panel. If I were Penny I'd have wet myself a little.
Oh and is it me or is everyone's hair shorter in this comic? Dora and Penny both seem to have gotten haircuts.
-
What made this one great was the LOLing liberty at the end in the awkward moment
-
Dora's lazer eyes are AWESOME, one of the many reasons i read this awesome comic.
Also, bonus points to Penny for saying what needed to be said. She's right, no one should be suprised by this, Sven is a asshole and while i'd like to believe him capable of change, i don't think he's capable of cold turkey change like that. It's like asking a nuclear explosion to NOT spew out tons of radiation. Not going to happen.
-
Penny doesn't know anything about relationships.
-
Dora's face is awesome.
As with Faye's.
But Dora's is much better hahahaha.
-
What relationship, kjohnnytarr? Faye/Sven? Not in one, as far as we know.
-
i know that look. pure rage. it made me pee my pants a little just seeing it.
-
Dora's face is awesome.
yah, dora has this very subtle "i will kill you and i will get away with it because they will never find your body"-glare going on.
-
Bluh, that was pretty mean of Penny. Part of a friend's job is to support you when you're sad and upset. Faye KNOWS she should have known better than to sleep with Sven. She doesn't need Penny to tell her again, she needs a friend to vent to.
-
I never found that to be true at all. My good friends tell me when I am being an idiot. And when it's done they make sure I recognize that while they love me, I'm an idiot.
-
Foot consumption protocol complete. Good work, Agent Gaines.
-

It's true. A crappy friend tells you that those new pants "look great!" on you, but a good friends tells you that they look horrible before you walk outside in them. Same with relationships: A crappy friend just tells you that you and so-and-so are "so cute together!," while a good friend points out that she is still hooking up with her ex.
Honest friends > Feel good friends.
-
Drop-jawed Faye, Please-don't-kill-me Penny, and thin-lipped-I-will-tear-you-into-pieces-and-feed-you-to-your-relatives-in-a-pie Dora are drawn brilliantly.

Poor Penny.
Oh, and it's Dora's turn to clean up the blood this time... fitting, seeing as how it'll be her mess.
-
This strip reminds me once again why I like Dora. That being said, it might be easier to be angry at Penelope if we didn't remember Faye snickering at Wil just before the expresso machine blew up.
Say, I wonder if god (or maybe Buddha, since Penelope did say it was karma) will make the expresso blow up on Penny now? Dora really would kill her then. That thing's new.
Warning - while you were reading 3 new replies have been posted, each one much better than yours. Surrender now. Resistance is futle futale pointless.
-
I immediately thought of Cmdr Data when Penelope said that. Mr/Ms State the Obvious won't always win friends easily.
-
Oh, I hope to hell not.
I love fantasy.
yes yes yes!! i agree with all of the above.
Also- i read dora's awesome expression as more of a silent communication for penny to shut the fuck up this is not the time or place rather than an angry death threat.
-
i'm not kidding when i say i think jeph could've made a great psychologist
AHHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA NO
i'm glad you're so amused. :p
you know i've never been a fan of penny and this does nothing to endear me to her...not b/c im faye superfan but bc penny just seems pretentious and im not fond of pretentious folk.
dora with martin=annoying only b/c she's so insecure .... dora otherwise=pretty cool
i'm still wondering whats new with sven haha
side note: not to beat the topic to death, but i just said something very similar to the whole i thought i was a big girl thing faye said a little while ago.....i still don't understand why normally rational people (ie myself) do dumb things like that :p
-
Ahhh! Dora has the Janeway Force 10 Death Glare down pat.
Now all she has to do is get Faye a Bat'leth and the circle will be complete!!
Jeeze Penny, great way to put yer foot right in it!!
-
P-P-P-P-P-PWNT!
-
Yay for consoling Dora!! I was worried she'd go ballistic on Sven and not give Faye a chance to vent.
As for Penny, granted my real friends tell me when I'm being stupid but they do it before I fall down. They don't kick me when I'm already on the floor. They pick me up (likr Dora's attempting) and let me come to my own conclusions. Faye already knows she shouldn't have become emotionally involved without being actually involved (insofar as a commited relationship). Poor Pen-Pen should have kept her trap shut.
In the words of my mom, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't let the person you're talking about hear it."
-
yeah...dora DID warn faye ahead of time. now that faye knows she fucked up, a good friends says "poor baby" not "i told you so." honesty and sympathy can go hand in hand, and there is a difference between being honest and being bitchy (which isn't what pen is doing, she was just being an idiot).
-
I too must express my admiration for Dora's Death Glare (tm). That is the best, funniest expression I have ever seen in this comic, bar none! Mad props to Jeph!
-
I have seen this look before. This look precedes only one thing, and that is slasher film-esque murder using either bare hands or improvised objects. The sort of slow, torture-porn murder one would find in Saw or Hostel. The kind that makes you rethink having eaten that big plate of spaghetti before sitting down to watch the movie. Penelope has achieved a new level of fucked. Dora's fists are probably clenched so hard right now that her SHOULDERS will pop, nevermind her knuckles and everything in between. I fear for Sven, too. Asshole that he is, he doesn't deserve to have the cap of his skull made in to the top of a spiffy hat.
-
Well, it's confirmed conclusively, Dora does not, in fact, have laser beam eyes. We know this with metaphysical certainty because Penny's head is still intact, no energy beam having punched into her face, and out the back of her cranium.

It may be something more like minigun eyes. Takes a minute for them to spin up.
-
Say goodbye to Pen-Pen folks, she is SO fired.

if the former, then it is her fault.
She modified the deal a while ago. And Sven still kept keeping up with her. He could have left at that point instead. Plus, he obviously knows that Faye wont be happy with what he did.
Bluh, that was pretty mean of Penny.
Thoughtlessly speaking your mind isnt mean, its just unsensitive.
-
Good on Penny - it's not her job/responsibility to make Faye feel better about her bad decisions.
-
Admit it, you laughed when you read Penelope's line. If not, you're fooling yourself and need to take Steel Magnolias out of your fucking DVD player.
-
Holy crap, Penelope. Open mouth, insert foot up to thigh.
Love the expressions.
Another fascinating avatar, Tybalt.
I like the new design (http://questionablecontent.net/images/thinkpositive.png) on Jeph's twitter. It reminds me of "Re: Your Brains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOlznuyPOeM)" by Jonathon Coulton.
WARNING BAD PHOTOSHOP.
 Good work.
-
Penelope isn't saying anything that a lot of the readers have already said. Faye thought Sven would change just because she was using him for sex? Not hardly; sure he regrets hurting Faye, but that didn't exactly stop him from screwing someone else, now did it?
Faye needs to sit down and think about what she wants out of her life; right now she's got a shell around herself and doesn't let anyone inside. She went to Sven for sexual relief, but wouldn't let him inside the shell any more than that, and even tried to set boundaries on their relationship without talking to Sven first. She's ruining herself emotionally by doing this (didn't her psychiatrist say something about being involved with Sven?), but I don't see anyone she knows being able to help her the way she needs.
-
What made this one great was the LOLing liberty at the end in the awkward moment
I'd agree, with an objection: I don't think it's Liberty. I'm not sure, but it looks very much like Hera to me.
Anyway, what Penelope said is pretty similar to the "I told you so" Dora sensitively abstained to tell.
It wasn't a good time to be sassy. Where the hell did she take all this sassiness from?
Wait...
-
Damn Penny fucked up here.
As for that photoshop with the Eyebeams
Epic,i loled
-
I dunno whether those eyebeams even needed to be shopped into that last panel. I wouldn't be too surprised if Penelope spontaneously combusted out of sheer terror.
I know I would.
-
Uh oh. Dora's "No" look. Penelope messed with Dora's "No" look.
-
This is the first time Dora's made that face where I actually think it's justified. Keeping your snark to yourself until Faye's in a mindset to appreciate it is not the same thing as enabling her bad decisions. She knows it was a bad decision, and right now she needs time and sympathy to help her absorb that and move on.
-
Pen has a point. It's like the fable about the croc and the scorpion. To wit, Faye knew he was Sven when they hooked up. What did she think was going to happen?
-
Have to echo many, many sentiments about the brilliant facial expressions.
I don't think Penny was trying to be honest/brutal, *or* mean about it. I think she just midjudged how much Faye was upset until after she said it.
-
haha, dora's face made me laugh.
and come on, you knew faye had to get that reaction from someone, right?
-
looks like we'll be seeing lots of "lets make faye feel better strips".
ohhhh, poor faye....didn't realize when you date a pimp you might have to deal with other women?
*insert some serious sarcasm here*
-
Waitaminute -- when did I miss the part about Penny and Faye being friends? I thought they'd just moved up to not constantly trying to stab each other with sass, maybe to mutual semi-civility...I mean, Faye had no problems pointing out Penny's potential problems with anything and everything. When did they move to being, like, friendly? I totally missed it.
That said, Penny obviously could use a little more "think before you speak" training. The situation was fairly transparent. However, she did bring the humor.
I'm really wondering what Sven is doing right now. Gah. I mean, is he already moved on? Is he actually paralyzed with "omigodI'mashit" regret and remorse? Is he writing a new song? Is he working up something in the way of an apology or an explanation?
After all, despite the shock and horror of her dad's death, what bothered Faye the MOST (or at least what kept getting emphasized) was the lack of reason for his death. Maybe if Sven comes up with an explanation, even a "Yeah, I did it,I am an ass, but the sex was rotten, and I kept thinking of you, that's NEVER happened before." it might, if not bring sunshine and rainbows, give Faye a little less self beating ammunition.
I imagine Dora going over to Sven's to administer a beating, and finding him depressed, upset, and otherwise not disagreeing with all her name calling. She is stunned, and goes back to Faye to say "What did you do to my brother? He's NEVER been like this after breaking up with a girl before."
It's nice in my world. Flowers and chocolate chip cookies and good vodka.
-
There\s a time for honesty and there's a time for support and there's a time to remember that even if you don't like the person, rubbing salt in the wound and pouring on the vinegar and iodine mixture is just being nasty.
And despite what we say here - what would you say if it was someone you knew, not necessarily a friend, but someone you knew? Would you come right out with the, "What did you expect?"
And how would you feel in Faye's position?
-
I lost track... Who's turn is it to clean up the blood?

i still don't get why people are calling sven a dick

That poster portrays a statue of Athena Nike, or Victory (I think that's what the crown means); (slips into Chairman Kaga voice) if memory serves, it sat at the hand of the great statue of Athene in the Parthenon. Anyway, the poster's been up on the CoD wall ever since Dora redecorated a few months ago for them , years for us.
I freely admit I laughed at Penny's comment, and still do when I look at the strip again. As I said before, Faye deserves the same amount of consideration from Penelope that she's given out. Of course, if we all got what we deserved, 'twould be a hellish world, I fear.
I, like others, also fear that Dora will find Sven morose enough that she will refrain from giving him an ass-whuppin', which he probably needs on General Principles. But I don't think she'll round on Faye for that. Dora's more likely to hold a victory celebration. Or she would if she wasn't so nice. As she says, "I would never." Which is why Marten's unlikely to dump Dora—it's easy to overlook flaws in someone who's got a heart like that.
-
I don't think Dora would "round on" Faye -- I think she would come back amazed and in awe of Faye's Sven taming powers, stunned at being able to say such things. ;)
Ok, so that's Nike back there? I'll have to go stare at it some more.
-
Faye needs to get serious about addressing her emotional problems. Right now her friends are just enabling her to keep going on without changing, and when suddenly someone who she was using turns out to be the kind of person everyone told her he was (and he told her too so she knew), she gets the sympathy? No way; she brought it on herself. She goes to Sven when she wants to, and expects him to be available whenever SHE wants sex, and requires him to be monogamous in the deal? She might as well buy a vibrator since that's what she's treating him like.
If anything good comes out of this, hopefully it will be Dora and Marten sitting her down and telling her "Look Faye, you're running away from confronting these things inside you; Sven is a symptom of that. We're here to help you but you've got to want to do this yourself."
Otherwise, I don't see how Faye can continue on with this kind of internal torment.
-
This is the first time Dora's made that face where I actually think it's justified. Keeping your snark to yourself waah. Waaaaaaaah waaah wah wah waaaaah waah waaaah waaaaaah waaaah waaaaah.
Fixed.

Out of all the whiny "waah Faye waah Sven" posts this plot arc has generated, you pick on that one?
People baffle me.

i mean if he'd said that he'd be exclusive then sure, but he was completely honest about his sleeping around

ha. i kind if agree.
-
Just because he was honest about being a jerk, doesn't mean he's not a jerk.
Obviously, that means Faye is at fault as well, for expecting him to be anything else than what he very clearly said he was - and she seems to realize this.
-
Love Dora's "pissed" face.
-
I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for Faye here as well. Her disappointment is very well-drawn and all, but she has twice said no to "something besides sex" hangouts with Sven (unless I'm miscounting) and seemed very opposed to seeing him in any other setting. She is the one who pumped the breaks on moving it to something more serious and he clarified not so long ago that he doesn't feel obligated to her. I understand that her feelings are hurt, but I don't feel like this is a situation where everyone should walk on eggshells around her. Penelope could have been more sensitive, but I don't think she was being mean.
-
Dora's angry face is fantastic and I am pleased.
-
Stop it; I'm almost too drunk to drive and I'd need more alcohol for that. I'm thinking Bacardi 151 or some Mount Gay.
O dear. Sure enough, she went to Dora.
I think Jeph is trying to kill me with alcohol poisoning.
Or laughter.
Whichever.
Time to go shopping.
While I'm sober.
Thanks again, Jeph! You're my hero.

OHMYGAWD. Dora's face in the last panel is my new favorite thing ever!

Almost everyone here seems to be operating on the assumption that monogamy is inherently good. I'm not saying it's bad either, but it's one relationship choice among many, all with their pros and cons, and yet people act like monogamy has been objectively proven to be the absolute best.
And heeeeere come the pretzels.

That 'IS' the standard operating procedure. Taught and encouraged as we grow up. Are you really surprised people think that way?

Well, I wouldn't say that it's the BEST -- it's what works best for me. Tried it other ways, and it's just too much work. Monogamy takes up all my energy. I know poly families that work great, and others that are nothing but ongoing drama. Of course, I know monogamous families in both conditions as well. Nothing is an absolute. Monogamy is just more familiar, and most people tend to gravitate toward the familiar without thinking about it much. There are a lot of social pressures for the poly person, too, which can make it a harder choice.
I don't think the characters in the comic are really in the right place mentally or emotionally for a poly relationship.
What kind of pretzels? Can I have a pretzel? :-)
-

That's cause we ain't some kinda scarlet woman.
In any case, I can't hate Penny for this, because that's pretty much what happens to me: no filter between thinking it and saying it.
-
I'm not surprised, no, just noting the question-begging that tends to come up in conversations. Just like I'm not surprised that people (OK, Americans) think that capitalism and democracy are inextricably linked, but that's a discussion for my political philosophy class.
Oh, and as for the pretzels, that's a Simpsons quote that worked its way into my lexicon for situations where I've expressed a minority opinion and expect a backlash.
-
Darn, and I was hoping for pretzels. I skipped lunch.
You've stated a minority viewpoint, but I don't think it's lash worthy. It's as valid as others around here. I just don't see this group of characters arriving at any workable web of relationships given their particular desires, issues, and backgrounds (in particular, I think it might give Marten scary moments vis-a-vis his mom).
I think of polyamory as coming from a mindset of abundance, monogamy as from a mindset of limited resources. Both are valid, but the conditions must be right.

Ah, thanks, it's been bothering me several hours today (including a lot of research on Google images). I was pretty sure it was a Greek goddess, but by the posture and the attire I could only think of Hera (my knowledge on the matter being sketchy). I don't know why I never asked myself the question until today. I think the first appearance of the poster was in that strip (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=452).

You know, it's funny, but I didn't notice anyone here having a discussion on the positives and negatives of monogamy vs. polyamory, which makes your desire to leap in and attempt to turn this into a discussion on the merits of poly kind of.... conspicuous. Particularly since Sven would have to be just about the worst possible role model you could pick for polyamory, since his pre-Faye MO was to meet girls, sleep with them, lie to them, vanish, and find someone else to bang. Recall the time he tried to get Marten to lie for him.

It has nothing to do with whether it's the right thing or the wrong thing, merely whether it's the agreed upon thing. If two people agree upon an open relationship that's one thing. If they agree on monogamy and one breaks that rule they shouldn't be surprised when the other gets upset.
-
We all know that Sven is an asshole when it comes to women, and Faye made it clear about how she felt about the 'Relationship' right at the beginning, but what some people are forgetting is the Timeshift that has occured between now and then. Several months have now gone by, and despite it all, they're still together.
This indicates to me that, despite Faye knowing Sven's past, she and he have formed some level of coupleship. This makes Sven all the more an asshole in this as he knows that he's in some sort of monogamous relationship with Faye and Faye has come to see Sven as something more than 'The Weekly Lay' that she started this in.
I will give Sven kudos and high marks for actually having the stones to actually admit it to Faye himself before she inevitably found out in other ways. I like the way Faye handled it when he did tell her too. It's all to easy to imagine her going Klingon on his ass at that point (Sven knew that too, hence the cringe) but the way she handled it by walking away before she blew her stack shows she has gained a certain level of maturity.
Oh, and Penny's funeral will take place next week.

Kugai, I don't usually like to disagree with you, because you're usually right on with your interpretations, but this time I can't agree.
The discussion where Faye made the conditions known to Sven was in comic 1307. In 1309 she and Marten have the comparative relationship talk where she calls Sven an asshole and herself a bitch. In 1319 (judging from clothing changes, about 6 days worth of QC time, maybe a full week) Sven and Faye have a discussion about 'cuckolding" (love that word) and either later that day or the next came the news about Gina Riversmith playing on "Saturday". So, stretching it out to say a full week passed between 1319 and 1343, that's two weeks since the "You sleep with someone else and I'm gone" talk and the confession in 1341 (which would make the day of revelation a Sunday ). I'm also pushing out the time -- it could have been as little as 8 days total. The Marten/Faye drama took place in a single day in between those points, as did the Hannelore flu thing, but those took up a lot of the comic. In between that time Sven and Faye met when Sven came in for coffee, and that's all we see.
So I can't agree that the Timeshift thing is really in operation here, at least between those two points. For the time leading UP to 1307, yeah, I think you have a good point, and some sense of coupledom might be blooming, but that conversation in 1307 sort of ruins that, at least for me. I don't think Sven had any idea of being in a couple until he was actually with Gina and not enjoying it much for thinking about Faye (what a time to have the revelation!)
I will give Sven kudos and high marks for actually having the stones to actually admit it to Faye himself before she inevitably found out in other ways. Totally agree with that.
Oh, and Penny's funeral will take place next week.
Bwahahahah!
Also, the very fact that I can pull up comics like this -- AND WILL -- indicates I really need to get back to grading papers and, I dunno, not obsess about this comic so much. Jeph Jacques, give me back my brain!!!!
-
This makes Sven all the more an asshole in this as he knows that he's in some sort of monogamous relationship with Faye and Faye has come to see Sven as something more than 'The Weekly Lay' that she started this in.
I really pity you (and even more so, your SO) if you base your relationships on "he/she SHOULD HAVE KNOWN x".
Don't get me wrong, I do wish I was psychic. But I'm not. And ye gods, do people who treat me as if I am somehow able to read their mind drive me abso-fucking-lutely insane.
"You should have read my mind and known/done X" is grounds for instant dumpage in my book. The very first time a girl pulls that on me, I walk. It's the number 1 sign of a stupid, immature little princess/bitch. Nobody, male or female, should ever get away with that bullshit.
-
I was almost more amused by Faye's face than Dora's in the last panel. And Penny's 'uh oh' look is good too.
*squints* Faye is indeed crying in the first panel. At first, I thought her 'blubbering' comment seemed like an exaggeration.
-
I never actually mentioned polyamory and have no desire to turn the thread into a debate of merits, I just wanted to point out that Sven's decidedly nonmonogamous nature and his assholery (douchebaggery, shiteatery, what have you) do not necessarily go hand in hand. No denying he's an inconsiderate asshole toward most women, but being in a monogamous relationship wouldn't automatically change that, anymore than sleeping around explicitly requires someone to treat their partners shittily. Sorry if it seems "conspicuous" that I "leapt in" - I mean, it's not like that's my first post ever, thus making it seem like I registered solely to make that comment...
-
Randomly came across this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9sfzFCtu5U) while zapping channels today, and it reminded me of Sven and Faye, though it doesn't fit entirely (Sven never said he loved Faye)
Still, I found it amusing.
-
Malli_kite, you're overlooking the big time jump between 1310 and 1311.
-
Mallli_kite, the Timeshift I'm talking about is seasonal
If memory serves, when their initial discussions about their relationship takes place, it's still late summer Que 1311, and we're into winter, which gives me an impression that Jeph has Timeslipped us forward a couple or two months and, despite it all, the two of them are still together.
-
Anime!Dora's cuter than the 'real' Dora.
-
Rimwolf and Kugai, I'm not convinced and had written a pretty large post about it, but I went back and used Dora's hair as a measure -- she talked about growing it out in 1302 and by 1311 she's showing a good month of blond growth, maybe more (it's hard to judge with cartoon characters). So, I'll give you that at least a month, but not more than two, has taken place between 1302 and 1311, but we don't know for certain when 1307 took place in that time -- weather isn't a good indicator since Jeph doesn't keep a strict seasonal year in the comic and weather tends to show up because he wants to do a gag. Dora doesn't show up in those strips, so for all we know that conversation took place just days before everything else started happening, even a couple days before the snow started.
The Dora Hair Time Measuring device (I wonder if I can patent that?) is not the best measure, since she's a toon and her hair length is whatever Jeph feels like drawing at the time. Whatever we do there, we are working with assumption, because we don't see Faye and Sven together much in that time period either. No one else's hair seems to change except Sven's, which gets shorter. It's just barely a good measure. For all anyone knows, Dora dipped her head in bleach.
It's not enough to judge Sven and Faye as having reached "coupledom" in any case. There's nothing in the strip to back it up -- it's all assumption on our part.
I'm still pretty amused at myself for going to all the trouble of working this out, but it was fun! :)
-
The Dora Hair Time Measuring device (I wonder if I can patent that?) is not the best measure, since she's a toon and her hair length is whatever Jeph feels like drawing at the time
That's true enough, which is why I, and Rimwolf I assume, were going on the seasonal shift since that seemed the more accurate measure.
It's not enough to judge Sven and Faye as having reached "coupledom" in any case. There's nothing in the strip to back it up -- it's all assumption on our part.
I'm still pretty amused at myself for going to all the trouble of working this out, but it was fun! :)
I know, but going on the shift that Jeph seems to have given us, one can assume that she and Sven are still sleeping together, and the 'incident' with Gina Riversmith is the first time he's actually strayed,
It is humerous and fun to work such things out. :)

In the last panel, Dora's pissed look reminds me so much of Sven it isn't funny, she looks more like her brother in that than in most of the other panels shes' been in.
Penny, though we all wanted to tell faye what you did, the obvious didn't help...

Early guest comic.
Pintsize shenannigans and jealousy!
-
Gaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! GUESTCOMIC??!!!! Arrrrrrgggghhh!!!!!!
Once again he leaves us hanging!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Funny though
-
Since when is Pintsize female? Or does it asexually have a bot-crush on Marten? :-D
-
He's probably found the setting (there's a comic about it) and changed it.
-
Its a guest comic.
They often dont make much sense.
-
Kugai, I'm with you. WAH!
But...it's the con. He's entitled to some prep time for the con.
*sigh* I wish Jeph would do a con a little further south. I get to see several of my favorite comic/webcomic authors at Dragon, and even at some of the smaller cons. He will go to Seattle, but he won't cross that Mason-Dixon line. I guess it's scary down here. (Who am I kidding? It IS scary down here...but it's warmer!)
I just want to stare at him pitifully for a while, I SWEAR...I've yet to do anything mean to an artist. I usually end up giving them money. David Mack lets me hug him (mmmm David Mack...)
Hell, I miss cons. Used to be a vendor/artist. It's boring behind the booth, but it's been over a year now and I MISS IT!

Oh, that was to go with the title of "Serial Killer of Balloon Animals", but I see it's changed, so I'll change the avatar.
There -- is that less terrifying?
-
I wish Pintsize still had his laser too.
-
hahahah yeah much better it's cute

For some reason Pintsize as rendered in the guest strip makes me think of Kuato of Total Recall. What that means, I've no idea, but it's the end of the thread, so who cares anyway.
-
It's the end of the thread as we know it, . . .

Kuato??
Are you sure you don't mean Batou?
-
I don't recall any Batou in Total Recall. He's the muscle-guy from GITS, yes? Anyway, I googled Kuato just to be sure, my memory being what it is... or isn't.
If you do the same, I strongly advice you to avoid the clip of him singing "Chocolate Rain." You stand warned.

Ok, sorry. Guess that's what you get when you Post tired after a long day - Misreading the Post of the person your reply to. I really did think you meant GITS!

Today was HOLY SHIT SCARY FAYE.
I do NOT want to cross her.
EVER.
Even if Sven looks delicious. But he's an ass, so therefore, no-go. Logic works. :D
