-
Oh, ha ha ha! Is so good! Is so funny because you are posting on board full of hipsters! Ha ha ha!
-
But for serious, click on that link at the bottom about Ukranian women fighters. Its awesome as hell and the photos are great.
-
I thought it was pretty funny. A good example of smart marketing rather than the usual bullshit. OP could have said more in the first post, but other than that I can't see why any aggro is warranted.
-
Meh, whatever. I thought it was funny. If other people don't, that's cool. Figured we all had a sense of humor about ourselves around here, but if I'm wrong, that's fine.
Next up I'll post some obscure humor poking fun at programmers, just to show that I have a sense of humor about myself. ;]
-
But seriously, guys. Click on this link. (http://www.divinecaroline.com/article/22360/65946-tribe-ukrainian-fighting--pics-?CMP=ILC-MoreFromWdgt) Its so awesome.
-
All right, here we go:
Q: How can you tell when a programmer has had sex?
A: When he’s washing the pepper spray out of his eyes.
Ohhhhhh, straight to hell! Hahhaa.
-
Don't these go in the pointless thread?
-
Yes
-
Whoops. Should I delete this and repost in the other thread?
-
Nah, don't worry about it. We can't have every amusing tidbit ever displayed on the internet go automatically into the Pointless Thread, there'd be nothing left to make other threads out of!
-
Yeah, I really don't understand the negativity here. I'd rather delete all the bitching than the original post.
-
I remember seeing these in New York and being like 'eh?'. It's pretty amusing on one hand, but I don't really get why you would do it on the other?
-
Well I FOR ONE think it is high time somebody made a thread to defend all the new people from you old people who are such jerks to the new people.
-
Sorry about that.
I actually read the accompanying text it and got a slight chuckle after I stopped assuming it was stupid.
-
Eh, fuck off.
-
Staedler, it's just marketing for FlatRate movers. Doesn't really need to be much more of a "why" behind it, I guess.
Dazed, you are not helping.
-
(Actually thread dramatics aside I think the FlatRates thing was pretty lame. Not because you shouldn't make jokes about hipsters, just - dudes, don't make the obvious jokes.)
-
Yeah they are kind of obvious jokes, but I think they got the balance right. You can't make the jokes too obscure or too many people won't get it, thus nullifying the point of marketing.
As an aside, I've been seeing the perfect indicator of mainstream co-option of the Hipster ideal in the latest incarnation of "So you think you can Dance." Basically they are just taking whatever stereotype they can think of grinding every last bit of juice out of it on air in Prime Time without much of an indication of an appreciation of the thing they are basically murdering. I see it as extremely ironic.
-
i thought it was a pretty funny ad. anytime i think of moving from now on i'll probably think about flatrates and this ad and how it was pretty clever. same thing probably if i thought the jokes were lame. so i guess it worked for them too.
the fact that people were hostile to this guy who basically just wanted to share something he thought was funny makes me sort of bummed and not really want to post sometimes for fear of breaking hidden forum rules i won't be made aware of until people start yelling at me too.
-
Yeah it was pretty much me who made a jackass assumption. And now I have bad flashbacks to when I started out on this forum and thought people were being dicks to me or that I was doing a terrible job of fitting in.
ModernRonin, if you felt ostracized by my post, I really really really am sorry.
-
The hippest people on this forum thought it was funny.
-
Oh, ha ha ha! Is so good! Is so funny because you are posting on board full of hipsters! Ha ha ha!
I realize this has all already been resolved and I'm not trying to add fuel to any arguments, but I would like to make the point that I'm not a hipster, and it's is not because I won't admit to being one... Seriously someone back me up here.
Emaline the Ukranian Fighting Women are awesome, and also kind of hot intimidating
-
I can't see why any aggro is warranted.
BECAUSE HYPER LINKS WITH NO TEXT IS LIKE MOCKING BLOW! Or perhaps Chall Shout since it's AoE...
WoW talks outside of WoW... for shame.
-
Duly noted (puff puff)
-
Also was there more aggro than just:
Oh, ha ha ha! Is so good! Is so funny because you are posting on board full of hipsters! Ha ha ha!
Because really, I am having a lot of trouble figuring out why everyone is losing their shit? I mean, maybe this could come off as snotty, I guess. But thats reaching, it just seems to flex the same muscles the original article did.
Unless there was some deleted hate posts, then thats a different beast altogether.
-
I don't really "get" jokes, so it might just be me but the only one that got a guffaw out of me was "don't pay hidden fees, explore hidden emotions"
And if we are being hecka antagonistic, OP, pro-tip, don't just post a link unless you can come up with at least a few sentences saying why you think something is worth posting. I am a busy man and I cannot really afford to take time off from my schedule of looking out the window at the rain drops to just click on ANY link.
-
Is he a gigolo?
Wait, I guess I'm going to find out in a few days anyway.
-
For some reason "prostitute" was the only profession that I could think of for which the phrase "time is money" would be applicable.
It's probably because I'm distracted by thoughts of the delicious Devonshire Tea I'm going to have as soon as I can tear myself away from the internet.
-
Brettstitution.

Emaline the Ukranian Fighting Women are awesome, and also kind of hot intimidating
See guys? You should visit that link. It's awesome. Those women are great and I wish I could do something like that.
-

I am a busy man and I cannot really afford to take time off from my schedule of looking out the window at the rain drops to just click on ANY link.
Meaning no offense, but if you're really that busy then why are you reading QC Forums? Especially a forum named "I like HURRRRRR"?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this whole subsection of the forums here explicitly to be a big waste of time?
Also, honestly, I'd be at a loss to know what to say about the link that the title of the thread doesn't already. It's a pretty one-shot joke.
Man, I'm glad I didn't post Freeman's Mind to the C&VG section, I bet everyone would hate that too...
-
I believe he wasn't being serious there.
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "I can't take time out of my busy schedule of watching rain drops out my window" was not serious, and was meant as a joke.
-
Oh, my bad, sorry. My sarcasm meter is obviously broken.
I think I should stop posting for the day, I'm just digging myself in deeper.
-
Probably, but to be fair sarcasm can be harder to detect when you're trying to read it rather than hearing someone actually speak to you.
-
Take a chill pill, get your sarcasm meter fixed, and maybe take a break from this thread. Just relax a bit.
-
NO FUUUUUUCKKKKKKK YOOOOUUUUUUUU
-
Oh man that Devonshire Tea sure was tasty! The scones were so light and fluffy. So light and fluffy.
-
oh shit man... scones. i want some scones so bad now!
-
Guys, does anyone remember when I posted a link to a video called the Hipster Olympics? This is much of the same. Why the shitstorm this time?
On topic: I thought it was amusing! Though they ran out of steam when they got to "Resolve daddy issues."
-
He's Brett.
It's an occupation which is way, way more complicated than mere prostitution.
12pm: wake up, talk about my dick on the internet
1pm: play video games
2pm: lunch and a few beers down at the pub
4pm: meet up with girl I slept with on Saturday night
6pm: meet jodie
8pm: put jodie to bed
9pm: shirtless on the dance floor of the Regretta trying not to throw up on some skank.
Come to think of it this is a pretty gruelling lifestyle I've chosen.
-
Guys, does anyone remember when I posted a link to a video called the Hipster Olympics?
I thought that one was great, also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAO4EVMlpwM
-
I don't get it. :|

Out of curiosity, how funny is this stuff to people who've never heard of Williamsburg or Greenpoint? All this internet hipster mockery stuff targets a very specific stereotype that thrives in my town, but isn't a widespread thing.
For me it's funny cause it hits the nail completely on the head. I see and meet people like this daily and the gentrification and artsy neighborhood shit is affecting the price of my house like woah.
-
It isn't a widespread thing? I know people exactly like this, the only thing different is the place names. How on Earth could Vice Magazine and MGMT make any money at all if this wasn't a widespread thing?
On another note, does anybody here (except for myself) positively self-identify as a hipster? I know it's a fairly common thing to say that "Hipsterism is Other People" but- if forced to put myself within some sub-cultural category- I would have to say I fit the hipster stereotype. I wear flannel, ironic t-shirts, tight jeans, expensive and impractical sneakers, black-rimmed glasses. I am interested in the independent/DIY aesthetic. I go to "hipster" nightclubs. I post here. Am I the only one who actually owns up to it?
-
Man I am so glad someone said that.
I tend to walk the line between self-mockery and shamed acknowledgement.
-
I need a massive piss.
-
OH, MY GOD! (http://www.divinecaroline.com/article/22360/65946-tribe-ukrainian-fighting--pics-?CMP=ILC-MoreFromWdgt)
YES, I AM.
-
A tribe of hot Ukrainian fighting women is now my preferred anti-zombie weapon.
-
I wear flannel, ironic t-shirts, tight jeans, expensive and impractical sneakers, black-rimmed glasses.
Check -
No, no, no, no, no.
-
Oh Harry, I just know we're going to be best friends
-
<---------- I am actually this smiley in real life.
-
I want to go live with the Ukrainian fighting women. Forever. Maybe I could be like... their massage guy?
I would like that a lot.
-
Okay guys so I stopped reading this thread halfway through because none of you were saying anything of value but:
Ukranian Fighter Women. Living in the Carpathian Mountains. Fighting with medieval weapons. And then there's that one chick with Yulia Tymoshenko on her shirt wielding two sickles looking like the motherfucking fury of communism. Why isn't there a movie about these people already?!
-
Because the ultimate fighting film has already been made, silly. There'd be no point.

I really don't see why that ninja would be dropping a WWII german sub-machine gun and a throwing star at the same time seeing how he would have to use both hands to shoot the gun either way.
-
Maybe the star is velcroed to his sleeve.
-
I doubt ninjas who use sneakiness as their number one weapon would want the velcro 'ritsch' sound whenever he's about to throw it. Then again he is using a gun as well...
-
On another note, does anybody here (except for myself) positively self-identify as a hipster?
Damn man you are the Richard Pryor of skinny white dudes. Take the power back, hipsta.
I was walking down the road the other day in a pair of lensless soviet carpet salesman pedophile glasses the other day that I had found at work and taken a shine to, when I realised some people would call me a hipster but I am ok with it because it is still better than "weirdo dirtbag"
-
I'm probably not hip enough to be called a hipster.
-
Anyway, we've been over this. The term "hipster" is passe (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22330.msg769353.html#msg769353).
-
once my brother told me that the word "hipster" came from china, where people in opium dens would lie on their hips all day while they smoked and for a long time I believed this.
-
Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization (http://www.adbusters.org/magazine/79/hipster.html). Perhaps it could also be labeled Hipster: The rise of a bland, meaningless, yet diverse global culture.
The article is pretty full of itself and condescending, but pretty accurate about hipster culture none-the-less.
-
oh no, a specific style of dress and attitude is defining a decade! it's the end of the world! aaaaaaahhhhhh
-
i jokingly call myself a hipster around my friends sometimes, but that is mainly in the hopes that this will cause them to see my internet t-shirts and generally ridiculous appearance and ludicrous music collection and furious opinions about everything as less irritating and more novel and endearing. hey guys, tania's not actually an alienating hateful bitch, she's just one of those weird hipster kids. ooohhh i see.
under other circumstances i would not identify as a hipster though. i just look weird and have opinions about stuff a lot.
-
I am not cool at all, so I can't be a hipster. I'm totally lame. And not ironically.
My friend however disagrees. He says I'm a hipster. He is all vaguely goth*. Another one of my friends, who is goth, tells me that I am a goth kid, myself. I always thought of myself as more of a hippie or totally punk rock. Something like that. I'm not really sure, which is why I've always kinda considered myself just sort of an Emaline.
*I mean, if we're gonna be all classifying people and stuff.
-
No matter what I claim to be everyone is already like me.
-
"I am an anthropomorphic cloud."
I'm not sure...

I don't know what flannel is, but I wear plaid shorts. Tight pants... NO. Expensive sneakers? I'm black, it's in my genes to be a sneaker freaker. Gross, glasses.
-
I lied. I'm a Lupe Fiasco wannabe. I want glasses.

Comic
I loled, fucking funny stuff

Anyway, we've been over this. The term "hipster" is passe (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22330.msg769353.html#msg769353).
Is this another case of people disliking something because it's gone mainstream? :-D
As I said earlier with the SYTYCD reference, what was in the past the hipster thing is basically what popular people are doing now that indie type biz has gone mainstream too. What I see as the defining characteristic of the 80s-to-now hipsterdom (ie: not the original 40s hipster) is the appropriation of past styles/cliches to build a unique style via pastiche without much/any knowledge of or respect for the original article (or a feigned/transitory respect, where necessary).
I say it's mainstream now because it used to be all the indie/alt cool kids were doing this, now it's more like all the cool kids fullstop. Could be due to the indie/alt subculture moving more toward the mainstream or it could be just a case of it reaching enough of a critical mass that the mainstream cool kids saw it done enough that it sunk through their thick skulls as something that was trendy enough to emulate. All I know is that a while ago I'd go out and see hipster-type kids at indie/underground clubs and the dolled-up kids at mainstream techno/dance nights. Nowdays the lines are more blurred, wherever I go. This may also be due to indie things having greater mainstream crossover appeal these days, leading to more cross-pollenation of ideas between groups. Here in Sydney if you put a bunch of electro dudes next to a bunch of indie rock dudes they'll probably either be the same dudes cut & pasted because both groups like both styles or at the very least they'll look pretty similar.
-
the question we need to ask ourselves is this: does any of this really deserve this much thought?
honestly, i couldn't have even begun to tell you what a hipster was until about a year ago, and then only from this forum. maybe it's because i live in the woods, maybe it's because i actively ignore popular culture everything outside my zip code for the most part; i don't know, i'm not a doctor.
the point is don't be so caught up in what everyone else is doing or what people call you or what you're supposed to call other people. it's really not important. just do, wear, and listen to whatever you want and try to be as happy as possible.
-
SWM, I give things this much thought because I enjoy doing so, not because I think it matters at all.
-
I am not in any way like an indie rocker (or any other kind of rocker) let alone a hipster, but I still wear hoodies. They're just this garment, you know. I even go shopping occasionally in a mall where they are supposed to be banned (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/may/14/ukcrime.immigrationpolicy).
-
I do hope you've never been mistaken for a chav, Paul..
-
I'm lacking the key ingredient (http://www.glasgowsurvival.co.uk/pictures/burbMobile.jpg), fortunately. (I did have that model of car once, but not the Burberry job.)

I personally think that adbusters is probably one of the most conceited magazines out there. For some reason, them criticizing hipsters strikes me as ironic. For a magazine that puts so much emphasis on being against advertising, it does a have a lot of the qualities that it claims to disdain.
I like the idea, just not the execution.

Hey look a bad article by a bad website.

I thought the main thing to being a chav was putting a snooker ball into a gym sock and beating people?
-
I think that's a bit technical for most of them.
-
I thought it had more to do with the shaved patterns in the hair, on the side.
-
Man the guy who founded AdBusters also decided he could write a book. He was wrong.
-
Oh, hey. Look what I found:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuyuMXCk0Es&feature=channel
Apparently "How To [insert verb here] Hipster" is the next big thing.
-
You will never be able to wash donk from your filthy filthy hands.
-
I just cant really tell if Donk is legit or some massive prank Vice is trying to pull on us.
-
The best part is that you actually watched the video. :-)
-
That was.. mindblowing. I'm not quite sure how to react so I'll just second Tommy I guess.
-
I refer to myself as a hipster sometimes, but kind of like a mix of how Tania and Dovey self reference with it. I'm joking, but it's pretty much true really. I guess I fit the stereotype based on the things I like to do, my political beliefs (in general), and the things I like to watch/read/listen.
I think of labels as handy tools and I don't understand why people don't like genres or grouping people together at all ever... sometimes it does make things easier. I mean, cerulean, indigo, sky, robin's egg... they're all different colors but they're all basically blue, right?
-
Fuck labels. A good 15% of them leave gunk on that new thing you bought for months afterwards and the same information could be applied to the object without it sucking so much.
-
It took me 15 minutes to figure out what the hell you were talking about.
-
Fold skinny jeans/ironic t-shirts/flannel into Flatrate wardrobe boxes
Plan on spending your free time grooming ironic facial hair
Man, they have me pegged. =\
