Sven. I'm gonna put it out there, and this is why:
1. He knows what he wants (unlike Faye)
2. He tries to get what he wants (unlike Marten)
3. He is honest with his feelings and intentions
4. He is emotionally secure (unlike Dora)
5. He is confident and likeable (unlike the other characters)
I know there is a lot of Faye love in these forums, but goddamn it she is annoying. She reminds me of the girl who calls up a guy to get him to drive her to a party so she can meet another guy. Basically using him for emotional support, while giving none in return. Also she is a cranky bitch to her customers, who basically just want a cup of coffee. How f*cking dare they try to buy coffee from a coffe shop employee! They should be ridiculed! (this is my least favourite part of the comic, her acting like a snob to customers, it's called common courtesy).
I was re-reading the archives recently and I just wanted Marten to HTFU and say to himself "well it's not gonna happen" and get over it, rather than following her arounf like a love sick puppy. And she let him. I don't like Marten, because he is a floater. He is happy just to float through life letting someone else run his life and make all of the decisions. Have some drive man! If you want to perform music, stop listening to Modest Mouse and pining about not performing music. Don't just float from dead end job to dead end job.
And Dora is emotionally and irrationally insecure. Other than that shes ok. But I would like her to call on Faye for being a bitch at work. I mean come on you are trying to run a business and you are letting a constantly cranky women abuse customers. Not cool.
Now the whole "Sven was wrong/right", not "Faye was wrong/right" thing has been done. IMO Sven acted like a douche, but had been honest that he would act like a douche (see point 3.) If he crawls back to her though, that would be totally lame.
Hanners is sweet but batshit crazy.
So who is your favourite QC character and why?

You must not be from around here.

Yup...
So who is your favourite QC character and why?
Hanners!!!

Raven.
She, like Sven, is confident, knows what she wants, and tries to get it. We haven't seen her hurt anybody (unlike Sven) and she has a special place in her heart (and bed) for the less fortunate. She's nice to everyone and always has a positive attitude. She can be ditzy and annoying, but we don't see enough of her for that to get too old.
Hanners is cute and all, but she's so child-like. Children are okay in small doses, but not all the time.
-
"Most likable" and "favorite" might not be the same.
Steve is a Regular Guy, likable by most standards, but not my favorite.
Raven meets most of the criteria on your list, and she's as likable as a puppy. And with as much common sense.
Hannelore is crazy, but are you going to dislike someone for being crazy?
BTW Dora has confronted Faye about being rude to customers. I'm too lazy to hunt down the strip, but it was relatively recent.
-
1. He knows what he wants (unlike Faye)
2. He tries to get what he wants (unlike Marten)
3. He is honest with his feelings and intentions
4. He is emotionally secure (unlike Dora)
5. He is confident and likeable (unlike the other characters)
That list could also apply to Pintsize.
-
Can you really make part of a criteria for why someone is likeable that they are likeable?
That's like saying, this beer is the best beer because it is beer.
-
i like beer that is beer
i also like beer that is scotch
-
You must not be from around here.
Yup...
So who is your favourite QC character and why?
Hanners!!!
The best is hanners, always!
-
I've never seen anyone have a problem with Marten before. He isn't my favorite (a spot that goes to Hanners), but i'd say Marten is the most likable.
-
T-Rex is probably my favorite, just because he is always exclaiming things in the second panel.
-
i c wut u did ther
-
Although, if I were to actually contribute to this thread, I'd say that each character has their own likeable qualities, just like any person. The writing is pretty superb as well, I could say, despite the overall feeling of the comic shifting from indie rock references with story to story mostly I still enjoy it and look forward to reading it. It is definitely in my regular comics rotation. I also use it as a jumping point to check Dinosaur comics, xkcd, overcompensating, Anders <3 Maria, and Sam and Fuzzy, just because all of the links are right there.
-
T-rex is a pretty cool guy. eh shouts Lynchian musings and doesn't afraid of anything.
-
I thought the Hanners character was there to be the most likeable person that grounds the cast, but maybe that's just my personal bias.
-
Hanners. She is very cute. Crazy indeed but cute.
-
i like beer that is beer
i also like beer that is scotch
Agreed! And once in a while, I like beer that is rum!

(Note: Maybe this is a "I like HUURRRRR" thread?)
And Dora is emotionally and irrationally insecure.
Funny thing about Dora; she seems to bounce back and fourth between really sane and really crazy. I mean, look at her reaction when Marten accidentally saw down Hanner's shirt (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1314), vs her reaction when that girl hit on Marten in the library. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1323) Epitome of sanity one minute, epitome of crazy the next.
It's probably deeply diagnostic about me that I find this kind of crazy attractive. ;]
Hanners is sweet but batshit crazy.
Funny thing about Hanners; yesterday I was reading back to when she and Marten first met. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=515) She as SEXY. No really, I mean it, she was smokin' hot. The current "I'm crazy and act 12 years old" Hanners is nothing like what she started out as.
-
She was on crazy meds at the time.
Dunno.
I like The run away bear.
He's nifty.
-
No really, I mean it, she was smokin' hot. The current "I'm crazy and act 12 years old" Hanners is nothing like what she started out as.
This is what we call character development.
-
Well, she acknowledged the fact she had OCD when she was "cool, suave, pierced." It isnt that far-fetched.
-

I would promote that behavior by having your mom as a famous dominatrix.
....
And I think Hanners is awesome....Everyone of these characters is batshit crazy but shes the most endearing character.
Raven is just plain clueless at all times..I don't know how she actually got through life
Dora can be hypocritical and can be the mean one in the Coffee of Doom at times too.
Marten..is *shrugs eh.
Steve is don't get the hype. He acts all wise and confident with Marten but doesn't really know how to go through life after being in relationships of his own.
Penny just doesn't promote likeability.
And Faye is my 2nd fave she just isn't afraid to speak her mind and be a bitch to people. I applaud her brazeness, why should one tone down who they are? Which is something I wish I could do in the outside world. And just say shut the fuck up to some.
-

I understand that people should speak their mind, but being a bitch and speaking ones mind are very different.
-
I meant them as two seperate things really....But also some people need a level of bitchery to speak their mind otherwise you get walked over
-
Winslow!
_ He's sweet
_ He's cute
_ He is good in a crisis
_ He likes a good joke/practical joke but doesn't want to hurt anybody (unlike Pintsize)
... And he is an Apple-Spawn <3

I don't prefer any one character, per se, as all of Jeph's characters entertain me. But if by that you mean which character would I most like to hang around with, it would likely be Penelope. She's intelligent, well-read, and, although she can go up in flames about things she feels strongly about, Penelope's usually pretty calm.
Second would come Dora, who's got wits and seems to be able to use them on a fairly wide variety of subjects. Plus, despite all the "I can't stands" people pile on her, she's a very caring, compassionate person. That goes a long way with me (it's how I'd like to be when I grow up). So do broadswords. I love ancient weapons.
Third would be Marten. Nice guy, but he's into odd bands I've never heard of and I, odd books of similar bent. Not much to talk about. Nice is always good, though. On the plus side, we both play guitar. That would be fun, having someone to play with.
Now to the other end of the spectrum.
Steve, with his women-drinking-depilating cycles, would drive me batshit.
I don't dislike Faye, but, were I around her much, I'd have to constantly suppress the urge to murder her. Especially back when she was doing all the smackings and whackings.
The character I'd least like to spend time with is Pintsize. He's funny, but only so long as he's happening to someone else.

Doesn't that contradict?
-
No... They're saying that she is GENERALLY calm with bits of spicy thrown in from time to time. That's not a contradiction... It's an observation. :)
-
I see.....Well one wouldn't construe going up in flames with being calm but w/e

cherry likes penelope cuz she has glasses
generalizations wooooo
-
Sven is probably the character I like least, for numerous reasons, most of which involve him being a huge slut.
Marten is probably the most likeable guy, if a bit spineless.
-
Tequila monster is my favorite, hands down. No reason needed
-

If I can recall, that "sass" brought the coffee shop a bunch of business. It is called Coffee of Doom after all.
And to answer the question, I like Hanners. She's a cutie!
-
Your memory is correct: see strip 651.
-
although she can go up in flames about things she feels strongly about, Penelope's usually pretty calm.
Doesn't that contradict?
The subordinate clause is formed by adding the conjunction although, which, coupled with the adverb usually in the independant clause, indicates that the statement although subordinates is an exception, not the norm, which is defined by the adverb usually. More to the point, although she can go up in flames about things she feels strongly about is braced by commas, meaning it's nonrestrictive. In other words, it's extra information, not necessary for the meaning of the statement. To wit, She's intelligent, well-read, and Penelope's usually pretty calm works without the subordinate clause.
In other words, no.
Sorry I missed the earlier thread, cold. Ah well.

Thanks for the intelligent clear up of that

This is what we call character development.
Or character derailment.

I think Marten is the most likeable!
After all, he is basically the person that holds the whole social group together. He is also the character that seems to make the most friends. He listens and comforts and carry on a conversation and ...doesn't hit!! He'll also get mad when someone needs defending (like when Steve got dumped).
Also, without Marten, Hannelore might not have been introduced-- and I know how you would feel about that!
(That's right, I'm talking to you).
-
i like beer that is beer

Agreed! And once in a while, I like beer that is rum!

 Rum and I do not have a very pleasant history, so I am going to have to disagree.
I like beer that is vodka.

There is too much Sven hate.
You people need to socialize with mansluts and realize that they are often cool people.
-
I like that guy who does the news posts. WHO IS THIS MYSTERY MAN?
-
Dora!
-
There is too much Sven hate.

Amen to that. The feminist movement finally allowed it to be socially acceptable to like women who get laid a lot. But now for some reason, society has turned around and started hating on guys who get laid a lot.
Too much h8, not enough luv...
-
If I knew any mansluts or players, I might be friends with them. They intrigue me. All the ones I meet seem to be monogamous. :-o
As for my favorite, that'd be Sven. I don't always agree with his actions (seriously, hiding behind other people to get out of a confrontation?), but otherwise he's an interesting guy.

Good thing I wasn't planning on dating a manslut
I require way too much attention
-
Probably Hannelore. She has the most genuine personality of all the characters.
-
And not a mean bone in her body.
-
Marten's mom......

Marten's mom......
...is not a regular[/i]
HOW CAN YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE I AM TORN WITH INDECISION

That's the only reason I didn't bring her up. She's competent, compassionate, perceptive, polite, and witty. How can you not like someone who invented the Worry Hat?
-
Sven. I'm gonna put it out there, and this is why:

The new people seem to understand this comic better than anyone else.
Also, I take umbrage with Hanners because her OCD makes her endearing to the cast, whereas when a male character has OCD he's an object of both fear and derision (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/07/25/) How is this fair?
-
Steve, bitches.
-
so knew that would happen.
I think Raven is pretty damn cool. Shes so ditzy and all that. But every now and then she says something that just makes you think the dumb thing is just a persona she uses to fool evertbody and really shes smarter then everybody haha.
Or she really is just clueless.
either way i like it.
-
I love Sven. In addition to all the other stuff, he's charming and witty and laid back. He did use to be an asshole who used people without any compunction, but the key word here is "used."
Hanners was obviously reimagined shortly after her initial intro, meds or no meds. Not only was she sarcastically quippy and cool and suave when introduced, but she was savvy about relationships and such and called Marten on his bullshit, in a way that current-Hanners could not possibly be. Plus she had an entirely different sense of humor.
-

No one said pintsize???
Albeit his actual character personality isn't really good for debate, but I laugh at least twice as hard at the comics that he is in.
-

She was abducted by aliens and had a large part of her brain replaced with a sock.
She also managed to TASER Marten and had to admit she was a neighbor-stalker, things that do fit the current Hanners (Hanners 1.1? 2.0? 2.0b1?) I agree the alpha version (to us, I suppose) was a very different Hannelore, but it may be she doesn't do and say such things now because she keeps second-guessing herself. (I do that a fair bit, which is why, instead of edgy gems of scintillating wit, you get this sort of prose from me.) Cocaine may be a helluva drug, but psychotropics aren't slouches when it comes to altering behavior, either. Hanners may have been saying what she actually thinks at first, without her internal cacophony getting in the way.
-
I thought Marten tasered himself by accident. As for calling people on their bullshit, I seem to remember her doing it fairly recently, with Faye. If only I had the archive skills to pull up the strip.
Maybe she just feels comfortable enough around them now to let them see all her quirks and insecurities, which basically means we see them now, and not just the calm facade she put on.

I like the guy that plays the yellophone.
/because you yell into it.
-
I'm gonna say Steve, I've always been intrigued by the "side-kick" characters, there's always more mystery to them and when we occasionally get to see what they're capable of it has more impact because they're used far less. Besides Steve is the most plausibly badass male character, can you imagine Marten or Sven being enlisted by a shadowy National Defence sect to kill Bond villains?
After Steve it has to be Pintsize, he's getting more and more unpleasant, it's wonderful.

If it makes you feel any better about character inconsistencies, people with that many psychological problems often go through radical and sudden personality changes

No.

Possibly not. But I can imagine Sven being enlisted to sleep with Bond girls (ala Casino Royale, 1967)
-
I like the guy that plays the yellophone.

I just really like the "word" yellophone. It makes me laugh to consider.
-
I'd say Marten is the most likable.
Though I like pretty much everyone. I'm not one to judge a person for their personal weaknesses as long as they're doing their best. Sven may be a little more honest with himself than the other characters, but he's about as unreliable a person as they come. He doesn't care about the effect he has on other people, and he sets people up to form an emotional connection to him when he knows he's going to hurt them later.
All you say about the other characters is correct, but it doesn't mean Sven is a guy I would even want to hang around.
Steve would be likable, only he puts up that macho front that refuses to admit he sees women as more as a means for sexual gratification.
-

Dora, she seems like the most real of the cast to me.
I pretty much dig everyone though.
-
I'm going with Dora or Hanners
-
I was gonna say Marten but reading the thread convinced me that the correct answer is, in fact, Winslow. Marten's inoffensive but Winslow seems like a real good guy. :-)
-
good guys can get boring very quickly, it is why they dont get laid
-
I am going to have to go with Hanners, that mostly cause if I ever met a girl like her I would probably follow her around like a puppy.
-
unless she used her disinfecting powers to destroy you
-
I'd have to go with Dora. Nearly as pleasant as Marten, but unlike him not passive to the extreme.

-
Most of the characters are great characters, because they're the creations of a good writer. But most of them, I think, don't come across as people who would be particularly likeable IRL. It's not that you wouldn't like them if you met them IRL, thoug, it's just that we as readers know more about their faults than we know about the faults of our more casual friends. Our closer friends are different; we know a lot more about their faults and problems, but usually we become friends with someone before we know a lot about them (first impressions are important), and then when later we learn more about the negative parts of their personaliities, we aren't going to abandon them just because they aren't perfect.
