Title: WCT: Mar 2-6, 2009
Post by: bhtooefr on 01 Mar 2009, 23:35
Whoa.

Is it just me, or was that a Crowning Moment of Awesome?

Hmp. I like characters enough that I was sad to see Meena get written out of the story in a single panel like that.

Then again, I wasn't exactly rooting for Mr. Sideburns to come back into the story, so Meena would have been out either way.

Unless it's all extended fantasy, then WTF.

In any event, it's nice to see Jeph stretch himself artistically, even if this particular strip didn't do it for me. Que sera, sera.

Hmp. I like characters enough that I was sad to see Meena get written out of the story in a single panel like that.

This. I love the comic, and I've said before that Jeph should do the comic for himself, but he has a nasty habit of *seemingly* getting bored with characters and hastily writing them out of the strip.

I mean, look at Natasha. She went from being  regular cast member embarassed by her rich parents to being "LOL UBERBITCH GONE NOW" with like two strips of set-up.

But more importantly.

Todays comic = AWESOMENESS!!!!111! hah

Gotta love those international spies of mystery
Title: It really happened.
Post by: NeverQuiteGoth on 02 Mar 2009, 00:48
 :-D

It had to have really happened. We've had a number of comics in the past that have hinted at the fact that QC takes place in an action-movie-superhero-comic world.

Bond. Steve Bond.

The comic has taken an unexpected turn. This builds on my crazy theory from ages ago, that this is a superhero comic with the action happening elsewhere.

"Who sent you?!" "The US Department...of kicking your ass."

I seriously doubt I'll read a more awesome line this week.

Tuppin' 'ell! Is this a record? Well, I was distracted by TV Tropes (http://www.tvtropes.org/) and  Scary Go Round (http://www.scarygoround.com/) for an hour or so.

Like 950 comics ago, I would have been for that.

Well, not exactly. But back when they all used to hang out, Steve and Faye had some good snark going. "Smarmasaurus", "pompadorasurus." Whatever the hell Faye used to call him...

But yes, this was a good way to start my day. Better than coffee. (Because my school has terrible, terrible coffee.)

US Dept. of Kicking Your Ass, indeed. Only way this strip could have been better was if Steve had been teamed up with the Vespavenger.

I was thinking about the supporting characters who will probably come around again

And the supporting characters who have made a  (seemingly) permanent exit.

Whoa. I see a pattern!

It's trolling to point out that this strip is a intended to

a) make fun of the "where's Steve"ers, and
b) just like last time a) happened, have some fun?

Enjoy seeing Steve, because we'll next see him in 300 strips after he's Skied Everest, become a cosmonaut, or something, anything, that keeps him out of the neighborhood.

  • Sara (unless she's Pizza Girl) (Who tried to be Marten's girlfriend)
  • Ellen (Steve's girlfriend)
  • Angus, aka Argument Guy (Faye's wannabee boyfriend).
  • Benji (Raven's Hoboyfriend)
  • The Boybobot (Hannelore's last, best chance for sanitary love)
  • Meena (Steve's girlfriend)
  • Dave (Steve's girlfriend's boyfriend roommate fiancé/serial killer)
  • Wil (Penelope's boyfriend. Okay, so maybe he's not gone. Maybe)

I will assume that Steve's awesome spy days are in fact the real deal by virtue of QC world being a parellel universe or something.

And as much as I'm "WOO STEVE"ing as much as anyone else I'm trying to not get my hopes up that this is his official return. I always liked Steve (he was the second human character we met, after all) and would hate to assume he's back for good only to be disappointed when he disappears again.

I laughed a lot at this strip and I think it's one of the best out of all of them. It kinda sucks that there was so much buildup with Steve and Meena and the explanatin of her and Dave's backstory for them to be written off in a single, tiny panel, but that's my only problem with the strip. Everything else is awesome.
Title: Re: WCT: Mar 2-6, 2009

What's awesome-est to me is that there's a small possibility this won't be the only time this comes up. I mean, the strip is funny as a gag on where Steve has been all this time, but a while back I thought that Steve had been recruited into a secret agency like that and it was involved in this massive conspiracy in the QC world, an integral part of which is the death of Faye's dad.

.......... so yeah. :p

But if not, it was still awesome.

Cool strip, QC needs more of the wow-random that this is. Still, sad to not see one with Hanners being turned into a cyborg lesbian.  :-P

So, I'm guessing that is the last we'll see of Steve's girlfriend. I am sort of glad she is out, reminded me too much of Faye's therapist and Sven's assistant.

Hm. I was wondering whether Steve was telling the truth in the first panel (from yesterday). Guess he was.

That really, really sucks though. If I'm understanding the story right. The chick who left Steve had a previous boyfriend, and the relationship went awry, right? And then there was some anxiousness on whether she'd go back to him (such a bad freaking idea). Either way, shitty deals.

I'd try to go looking for the strips..  but I think I'd get lost and never return.

Oh yes he should totally go "ah poor guy you lost your love to some other guy and they are happily married, but I am totally in a happy relationship and make the big dance whenever someone asks me about it".

Would make feel Steve totally better.

He may yet, Mr. Frodo. But Wil's new pals in that last photo didn't make his chances look great.

As for Meena and Dave, that's exactly what I would have expected from them. Nor would I be surprised if Meena called the engagement off next week. She seems batshit crazy to me. It may be Dave proposed in order to 'save' Steve from her.

Tortura? Of course we will see her again! I mean, Steve obviously escaped by seducing her and convincing her to betray her masters and free him, and is now obsessed with him, as he is the only man who has ever satisfied her, and she desires nothing more than to be his desperate love slave!
This.
That would be an amazing little story arc.

Now we just have to ask ourselves whether Marten is less than enthusiastic about his relationship for Steve's sake, or if he's doing it unconsciously and deep down doesn't have that much enthusiasm for it any more.

In the second panel, the guy in the doorway is tailing Steve. Steve knows this.
Indeed. Steve will confront the guy at an appropriate time and place.

Why wouldn't Wil come back? He and Pen are destined for each other. duh.

Unless he was faking being nice or underwent a radical personality change, I'm going to agree. Dave just doesn't seem like someone who would do that.
Not that we really got a chance to know him...

Hm, Steve reveals  a  truth -- soap operas are much better when one is drunk.  At least, the constant repeat of plot points seems like a good idea.

With such a sizable cast, it can't be easy to give everyone time while still running story arcs, and some characters are more interesting/story worthy than others.  I wonder if Jeph keeps a notebook with characters and their backstories, or if he just refers to old strips?

And I hope Amir doesn't join the ranks of Missing, Presumed Written Out characters. I liked his "creepy older guy at concerts" thing.  Also -- arm hair!  That made him unique.

The longer lasting characters seem to be the most complex (d'uh) which gives them a lot more options.  While I liked Wil, he did seem to be rather one dimensional as "Sensitive Poetry Nerd".  No backstory evident.

I'm wondering if Raven will vanish, too, for that same reason.  She had a great gag built into her, but a lack of complexity and no backstory.

It's fun to analyze, but I am so sleep deprived right now...

Wil also hasn't been given a whole lot of time to show himself off.

In the same amount of time, Sven would be nothing more than  "Womanizing Jerk," Marten as "Skinny Indie Guy," and Faye as "Abusive Bitch". If Wil were to be around more I think that he'd be more fleshed out.

Marten's enthusiasm over his relationship with Dora is overwhelming. I don't care how long they've been together, it should at least make him smile.

I think it's pretty obvious the way it's been written lately he's NOT as enthused as he should be about the relationship. But maybe that's just me.

Feels great to have a couple of strips in a row with Marten and Steve. Repeating others but the comic really felt like it was missing male friendships.

This is a good point. Though, I'd forgotten about those damned pictures...I really hope Wil survives.
But if he does then he will certainly have more to show for than the "Hopeless Poet" stereotype.

Should we take any of the polls seriously? There was mention of Wil's severed ear appearing in an envelope in Pen's mailbox. Maybe it's code for something...

Guess I missed that one about Dave and Meena...maybe.

I've done many things drunk, but never watched soap-operas. I do admit to Watching DOL though, way back when, to see exactly how many Roman Bradys they could stuff onto the show at one time. But, if we postulate the Bianchis are QC's Bradys, Faye would at least have had to sleep with Sven, Dora, and probably Mr. Bianchi to become parallel. And there's got to be a twin of one of the main characters lurking out there. DOL is (or was) built around the idea that everyone in the world has a long-lost, crazed twin sibling who's out to destroy them. You know the twin's crazy because he/she/it actually wants to take over the character in question's life, possibly for a chance to sleep with one of the Bradys.

I can see the DOL writer's bullpen now. On the wall: Stuck? Bring out the twin!

I for one hope to see more of the eastern European spy/dominatrix chick.  There is just something about that accent...

Tortura? Of course we will see her again! I mean, Steve obviously escaped by seducing her and convincing her to betray her masters and free him, and is now obsessed with him, as he is the only man who has ever satisfied her, and she desires nothing more than to be his desperate love slave!

That could be a very interesting arc.  "Creepy she-bitch stalker invades Steve's life from a time before, for hot monkey mattress dancing."

I honestly don't think Jeph would do that, though.  Not that I don't think he could, but I do think it would take more time and effort than he's willing to sacrifice.

Okay, I'm a pretty huge fan of Days, and the sibling does not have to be a twin.
You're long lost evil sibling can be younger than you, as with Max's new younger sister Melanie and Stefano DiMera's new younger brother John Black.

Actually, the show could work out with the QC cast for some interesting results.

This whole thing with Steve makes me realize something. I miss Communists. Not Communism mind you, but those wacky evil communists. Action/spy movies just aren't the same anymore. America no longer has a real evil enemy. Oh sure there's the muslims, but they can't hold a candle to the communists (crashing planes into the towers! amateurs! A really evil person would have planted a bomb under the towers, and then held hostages), plus, what's more provocative? A lustfully beautiful Nastasha, or a covered-in-a-concealing-robe muslim woman? and which one is more likely to torture you for information? the Nastasha? or the muslim? (the Nastasha of course! The other is too busy birthing babies, and making all black body coverings.)

I like how Jeph only uses the characters relevant to a story line. People like Natasha, Sara etc are people that fade in and out of everyday life. I might see someone every day for months and then suddenly never see them again because they were dating on of my friends, or because they faded out, got a new job etc.

I like that he lends realism to relationships.

In saying that. New Steve comics = awesome

Learn now the pattern of Steve:
A) Pick up girl
B) Have a date. If fail, return to A
C) Try to extend relationship. If fail, return to A
D) Have relationship; much sex, cute sex dance, happy happy
E) Somehow relationship begins to oscillate out of control
F) Run, screaming
G) Get loaded on booze and alter hair in some fashion (grow beard, shave pubes, you name it)
H) Try to recover relationship. Limps on for a while, then epic fail
I) Repeat step G, then move back to A

Since Steve freaked out when Ellen started talking marriage, I'm guessing this is destined to go on for a while. In between times, of course, he can work for USDKYA. Looking at the above, it's easy to see why Turing (the spook) recruited Steve. Turing's right: no one would believe it. I know I don't. It is the sort of thing you might dream, though, if you watched '80's-90's DOOL. The soap probably hasn't changed much.

Sven, otoh, seems to follow this plan:
A) Pick up girl
B) Much sex, happy happy
C) Return to A

So I think Tuesday's comic kind of brings new light on how much time has passed since the time jump that saw Dora's hair change and the switch to Winter from whatever season the story was in before that.

If Meena and her Ex with the creepy eyes are already married and trying for kids, it's clearly been a hefty chunk of time right?
Title: Re: WCT: Mar 2-6, 2009
Post by: Mallli_kite on 03 Mar 2009, 17:35
Well, Steve more or less vanished quite a while back in non-comic time, but as for getting married/trying for kids -- that COULD have happened in two weeks, considering how long Meena and David already knew each other and assuming they just went to the courthouse for the license and then started trying for kids that night.  Really, if you're not doing a big deal, it's not all THAT time consuming to get married.

But I think we can assume at least a couple months of comic time has passed since we last saw Steve in a drunken condition, which could be assumed to be after Meena broke up with him and married David.

It's so hard to tell in with the arbitrary artist-god in control ;)

I do get that feeling that Marten is a little less into the relationship than he used to be. Sure, all relationships have their cooling off but I doubt there would be these hints in the comic were it not leading to something... Would be quite interesting if the whole QC-verse exploded and everyone was single at the same time again.

Although the adventures of Steve look to be quite interesting I am hoping that QC does not take a turn for the totally insane action comic. I have grown less interested in Sam and Fuzzy the deeper and more confusing the whole ninja mafia turned out to be... Is it too much to ask for character dramas and indie jokes?!

I love to see it become a running gag, though. Where, like, every dozen strips or so Steve has to "vanish" for a couple hours to do secret agent stuff. The comic will not show any of this action however, instead focusing on the raised eyebrows Steve leaves behind.

Nah, I figure that after focusing on the goings-on of one set of characters (in this case Faye/Sven) for a while, it's just time to zoom out for a bit, maybe back up in time, and see what everyone else has been up to.

Just 'cause we have only seen what a few people have been doing recently, doesn't mean the rest have been sitting offstage on folding chairs, drinking coffee and waiting for their scene. They've been getting on with their lives.

In hats.  It scares me.  I hope they don't open up a clothing optional area in The Villages (Hamunaptra, City of the Retired, Where All the Wealth of the Republicans is Kept in Florida.)

I used to go to pagan events, long ago in an earlier life.  You learn to avert your eyes.  That's why it's called "skyclad" -- you're looking at the tops of people's heads and the sky, so everyone seems somewhat dressed like that.  (not me.  I sunburn too fast.  I went about clothclad.)

Poor Wil.  He must have the invisible Loser stamp tattooed on his forehead.  I'm wondering if this will be "shake down the vanished characters for gag ideas" week.  Recycling!  It's good for the environment.

As for Drama and Story Arcs -- it seems possible (and some past strips indicate this) that Jeph is just doing more sophisticated storytelling.  That is, he's interweaving plot lines instead of taking a hunk of time to just concentrate on a single arc.  The single arc style has the disadvantage of warping the strip's timeline and focus.  Also, the Faye/Sven drama took only about 24-36 hours from Gina to Pintsize, and after such an event its entirely logical everyone wants to lay low for a few days.  I like the idea of interweaving, with various plot lines coming to the forefront and then fading back for a bit.  Much more interesting technique.

As for the Marten being tired of Dora, I think that's wishful thinking -- Marten is sensitive to the relationship problems of his friends and doesn't toot his own horn at the best of times, so if he knows Steve just had a breakup, why would he be dancing around saying how great his girlfriend is?  Yes, there are some assholes who do that kind of thing, but Marten isn't one of them.  I think the big nighttime sigh was explained pretty well in the following comics where Marten complains about how his dreams of music success aren't coming true.  The details should be considered in the context of the whole.

This.

For awhile, I was viewing the nighttime sigh as Marten being somehow dissatisfied in his relationship, but on further inspection I too think that Marten is having a sort of career-crisis over not becoming the Musician he dreamed of being.

That being said... I still have an illogical hunch, based on absolutely no fact, that something is up/going to be up soon in Marten and Dora's relationship. Just one of those 'gut' feelings.

Do nudists always wear hats?

And why is he out there if he's worried about scorpions?
Hats: Well, when one of those lame MTV reality shows went to a nudist camp out west, their guide wore a hat, shoes, and a weird blur about his middle.

Mr. Skyclad is not worried about scorpions because he's not sitting down like Wil is. I suppose it might actually be safer to be a naturist (scorpions love to hide in discarded, or even folded clothes). Hard to brush off a scorpion that's crawled into your pants with you. Of course, I'm not sure that's a selling point for naturism. To me, it's preferable to tie my pants cuffs closed than to strip off, but it takes all kinds.

Y'know, Cartilage Head, I'd no idea fleshlights came in such an…assortment.

I read the first few panels and now I have "Institutionalized" stuck in my head ("But they just keep bugging me, they just keep bugging me, and it builds up inside!!").
And for some reason I imagine Raven seeing herself depicted as an oral fleshlight with googly eyes and giggling so hard she has a heart attack.

I can't quite decide how I feel about the attachment that's just a nondescript slit.
I've seen a description of it before, something like "it's made so if people discover your fleshlight it is nondescript and noone knows what it is".
There are two problems with this:
1. Anyone who spends too much time on the internet knows what a fleshlight looks like.
2. How can you look at that and thing anything other than "sex toy"? What else could it possibly be? Some kind of obscure piggy bank?

Man, fleshlights are creepy.

I'm wondering if Raven will vanish, too, for that same reason.  She had a great gag built into her, but a lack of complexity and no backstory.

It's fun to analyze, but I am so sleep deprived right now...

TANGENT

Raven had a backstory, she went to college to study interior decorating and her parents were intellectuals or rocket scientists or something. She's a long time friend of Dora's  and used to be a gothy wican now she's a poppy emo airhead or is she? She can be prone to strong insights and making very witty remarks, I'd say she's pretty complex.
Title: Re: WCT: Mar 2-6, 2009
Post by: YokoShippo on 05 Mar 2009, 10:13
Also, bit more of Raven's back story, it appears that Raven's promiscuity originates in her low self-esteem. In 562 it says that, during college, Raven gained about 20lbs. After dropping the weight, boys noticed her again. She's making up for lost time. Also, from a psychological stand point, her promiscuity could stem from a fear that, should she gain the weight again, guys won't be interested in her. So she's getting as much as she can now.

Or maybe she just likes sex, and doesn't feel like she's ready to consider a long term relationship.

When Tai has lots of sex with many different partners, she's liberated, she's the cute lesbian.

When Raven does the same thing, but with a different set of partners, she's a promiscuous slut with low self-esteem.

What is so threatening about a young attractive heterosexual woman expressing her sexuality without possesiveness?

There's nothing wrong with a young attractive heterosexual female expressing her sexuality without possessiveness. I have no problem with Raven as a character.  However, given her background and my own over-analytical nature, I was speculating as to why she acts the way she does. It was not meant to be judgmental, simply an exercise in critical thinking.

Well as an obligatory comment on today's comic, er, what was Sven expecting? Being a decent person doesn't mean you deserve a cookie, it means you have the satisfaction of having goddam morals. Seriously I never, ever had a problem with Sven. Frankly for all we know the pissed off women were never lead to believe it was more than fucking, it's hardly unimaginable is it? But what is with the recent weakness of character? Clearly I overestimated him.

Anyway, I've just started working at a sex toy manufacturer and I cannot convince my partner to try a fleshlight or similar! I am pleased someone actually admitted they enjoyed it for as much as they're somehow disturbing looking (no I don't find giant phalluses disturbing, dunno where that double standard comes from) I can't see why anyone has a problem with it. But unfortunately my man shares the majority opinion. I'll get him one day...

My thoughts exactly. And as much as I hate Sven....goddamn he looks cool in that first panel. Also angry, but whatever.

I reckon Sven's actually improved a little, as when he was faced with girl troubles before he tried to climb out of the window or pretend Faye was his girlfriend. This time he actually faced up to the consequences of his actions.

You know what cracks me up? How Sven made such a big deal of telling Dora that he was being honest and letting Faye know. Like he made that decision all on his own and it wasn't because his tiny little intern strong armed him into it. Now he is glaring at her because it turns out that telling truth has CONSEQUENCES. So he's happy to let everyone believe he made this grown up decision to tell the truth but then he is glaring at his intern because she MADE HIM DO IT.  He is such a little bitch.

Oh and going back to yesterdays comic, did anyone catch the fact that Penny didn't say she wouldn't say mean things to Faye? She only said she wouldn't "accidentally" say anything mean to Faye. Purposeful meanness is still on I'm assuming. That was actually my favorite part of the comic.

I was reminded of a discussion several of us were having in another forum re: cheating. Guy posed a hypothetical situation in which a guy cheats on his fiance with an ex girlfriend shortly before the wedding. He regrets it and doesn't want to wreck the wedding, so he doesn't tell. A couple months down the road the ex contacts him to let him know she is pregnant, is keeping the baby and expects him to be involved. He tells his wife about the premarital cheating and resulting situation. The guy posting the hypothetical believes the the wife should try to be understanding and that the guy should get credit for telling his wife and being willing to be responsible where the baby is concerned.

My reply was:
if the man really was honest, I can almost guarantee you he would not have been married, because if he was really honest, he would have told his fiance about the cheating and odds are she would have called off the wedding. You make a conscious choice to cheat. There comes a time in any scenario where you decide to have sex with someone other that your partner. In the scenario you posit the man decided that his relationship with the person he supposedly loved enough to marry wasn't as important as his need to sleep with his ex. Would you want to marry a woman who chooses to cheat on you right before the wedding? And if he's that damned responsible, where was the contraception? The protection? I do think a man should be honest and take responsibility, but that's what being a real man is about. You're saying that he should get kudos for taking responsibility of a child he had due to having unprotected sex with someone other than his partner? I say no! He's still a bastard, just not an unmitigated bastard. It's like saying "Oh, you're not a complete and total asshole? YAY for you!"

I get into some of the most random discussions.

I mean, i think the majority of us can agree that Sven's behavior is certainly unreasonable and immature. I'm also agreeing with a previous comment that Faye is doing... surprisingly well, to say the least. I think the creation of this sticky situation gave Jeph a lot of room to develop his characters.

anyone else here, not that into will? i mean i dont necessarily dislike him. i think i'm just kind of indifferent to him.

can't say I agree, Wil is on my list of favorite characters.

is anyone else going to webcomics weekend? I tried to muster up some extra bucks to go but it looks grim for me. Jeph's comment on the tons of people going totally made the fruit even more forbidden. i'm bummin, man, i'm bummin.

OK, seriously, can I please have someone explain to me how someone who is not in a relationship can be so angry and hurt when a known slut  they're ashamedly sleeping with ends up having drunk sex with one other person on one occasion?

Or is this just another instance of "It's a woman's prerogative to be irrational and crazy and for all her female friends to do the same."

This assertion that "Sven's behavior is certainly unreasonable and immature" is baffling to me. Rather, it's the reactions of Faye and Dora and company that seem unreasonable and immature. Or did I just somehow miss the comic where Sven and Faye decided to go monogamous?

And to continue the offtopic conversation regarding optimum screwing equipment...

What? I'm talking about the fairly predominate attitude, reinforced by decades of sitcoms, that women can be as irrational and generally balls-out crazy as they want, and it's the man's duty to find some way to placate her, no matter how difficult or ridiculous or expensive. And if he fails in this task, then it's perfectly reasonable to expect that he be banned from sleeping in his own bed, being relegated instead to the couch.
Title: Re: WCT: Mar 2-6, 2009
Post by: moshimoshi_haihai on 06 Mar 2009, 09:15
well, i guess I would just appreciate it if you didn't just group all women together in this conclusion you've come to. Because, I am a woman and I actually agree with you:
Indeed, there is a particular type of woman who engages in the behavior you describe.

BUT I am also a woman who does not conform to such behavior. In fact, when my boyfriend and I squabble it's me on the couch. Just this Valentine's day I MADE him go on this weekend trip with his friends that they had planned instead of staying here with me, even though he insisted he stay here. They had planned the trip without realizing the dates of the weekend, an honest mistake. I didn't make him feel guilty, I don't plan on using it against him later like some sort of one-up, and I don't think it was unreasonable to any extent. I wanted him to go have fun and I still stand by that. Besides, Valentine's day is a fake holiday anyway. it upsets me that there are men out there who have been treated poorly by woman who constantly victimize themselves.

I'm letting you know that there is hope, that's all. I just don't appreciate your idea that because I'm a woman I must be "irrational" and "balls-out crazy"

Robertson head screws are better known as square head screws.  They simply allow the driver bit to grip it better.  I strip phillips and flat heads all the time, never had a problem with square heads though.  But like I said, unfortunately they don't make em in the US.

OK, seriously, can I please have someone explain to me how someone who is not in a relationship can be so angry and hurt when a known slut  they're ashamedly sleeping with ends up having drunk sex with one other person on one occasion?

She's hurt because she got emotionally attached. She's angry, not just angry at him, but at herself as well. She went into this knowing his history and thinking that knowing it would help her keep a certain distance. Unfortunately she did start to feel more for him than she meant to. That's why she told him that if he slept with someone else, they were done. He knew that and chose to do it anyway. So she's angry at him for choosing to sleep with someone else and she's angry at herself for caring enough to be hurt by it.

Faye was in a relationship emotionally speaking, she just wasn't admitting it to herself. Self-delusion can lead to being angry and hurt.

Even though Sven notified her explicitly that they weren't monogamous, he'd apparently been that way for months (long enough for the season to change and for Dora's hair to grow out), and in 793 he had said that he was putting casual sex behind him. Self-delusion is easier when there's some evidence to support it.

I can see being angry and hurt when the other party in a non-relationship torpedoes it that casually. Sven knew that Faye had promised to end things if he slept around, which means that his action was the same as saying "By the way, what we've got is less important to me than a drunk one-night stand". That's an angering and hurtful thing to communicate.

We're seeing the confirmation of something Faye said earlier. When Dora suggested that she try casual sex, Faye said "I'm not that kind of girl". She really isn't, after all. She tried to do casual sex and got emotionally involved.

Now, I don't see Sven exactly blaming Lydia for things -- she's just convenient for venting.  No, it's not mature, but it's a rare individual who hasn't done it at least once.

Again, this is BRAND NEW BEHAVIOR for Sven.  Aside from getting slugged by his sister -- which might make him a bit surly -- he's acting rather like HIS feelings might be involved in this.  Yes, he's dealing with the consequences of his actions, but these are brand new consequences.  He's not trying to slide out.  He's not hunting up a new woman to bed.  He's MOPING.

It's like he's having an emotion about the situation.  I mean, seriously.  He could be just as angry at himself as Faye is angry at herself, but for him it is all new.  I don't think Sven has ever been angry at himself for a decision.  He's pretty much skated by dodging all that, not taking responsibility, not caring.

So, jeez, give him a little while to work all this out.  This is complicated stuff he's learning.
