I've played this on and off over about 15 or so years.. best game ever, yes/no? It's such a bizarre and deep game, and I don't think I've ever gotten any further then half way through it.
Discuss nethack, the strange ways you've died playing nethack, and the glory of it's graphics.
-
I hate you. Now I'm going to have to open up my dusty nethack and play a game or too.
EDIT: Now i remember why I don't play this game, it's too easy compared to dungeon crawl.
-
Really? Man, I don't think I've ever gotten half way through the dungeon levels. :(
-
My best character just died on level 13 in dungeon crawl, damn hydra and no wands of frost :(

computer dungeons and dragons is D&D for nerds who cant find other nerds to play it with
unlike me, who has several groups of nerds to play with
I am also a nerd to clear up any confusion or to think i am being condescending
-
That's silly. I play both tabletop AND crpgs.

Holy shit! I was just thinking about this game the other day.
Way back before you were born (1983), I used to play this amusing little PC game called Rogue. Then came its descendant Hack. Eventually Hack became NetHack which, honestly, I didn't find as much fun. I played Rogue and Hack for hours. Hack could be beaten, which is probably why it evolved into NetHack and became much harder, but I've only beaten Rogue once. I've found the Amulet of Yendor maybe five or six times, but only gotten out alive with it once.

I used to play Hack and Rogue. :D
Then I found "Dungeon Crawl" and my life hasn't been the same, I can't go to other roguelikes because I find them too easy or confusing to learn.
-
Because Runescape is a terrible excuse for an MMO built on the premise of being so clunky, unstreamlined and slow that free players will upgrade just to improve the rate at which they make money to buy fancy hats. On top of that, the playerbase is composed almost entirely of children who cannot afford a "real" MMORPG. Nethack, on the other hand, is a classic roguelike that has produced an entire subgenre of games as a result of being made.
-
Yeah, I mean, I mostly play Dungeon Crawl, but I'm not about to denigrate Nethack under any circumstances. Nethack is a 20+ year old open sourced labor of love that comes in many flavors due to an extremely active community. It's an institution whereas Runescape is a low rent mmorpger.

I absolutely loved Rogue, but I never played Hack and Nethack is far too much work for me these days.
Of course, I played Rogue at 7 or 8 on an 8-inch floppy at my grandmother's, and was absolutely terrible at it. But I remember it fondly.

You have to grade Runescape on a bit of a curve though.
The problem here is that by such standards Runescape still gets compared to Kingdom of Loathing in the free browser game arena. Anyway, I think all that anyone is pointing out here is that you shouldn't wander into a thread and throw a stone from your glass hut. Your initial post was a touch condescending, which, you know, might have worked out better for you if your game of choice hadn't of been Runescape.
-
My initial post was a bit trollish sure, but it wasnt meant to be harmful. More meant to get some feedback on RS from other ppl that like the same (sort of) genre of games. In the end, i like it so i play it. I guess thats what matters.

Fair enough...
In the end, i like it so i play it. I guess thats what matters.
Wait what? You're looking for our opinions but all that matters is your own?
