Should we do that? I just came across this in a hockey forum. Ofcourse... doing it here would involve other bands!
Omnomnominations below? :-D
-
Perhaps you should clearly explain to us what you mean.
-
I think we did something like this before. It's on the Quiki, somewhere.
-
I wasn't around last time we did this. It could be fun to do again. Maybe.
-
I'm surprised Silkworm didn't even make it into that other one.
-
Silkworm wins.
Dski, I'm seeing Boris over Silkworm, 5-4 on penalties.
-
I'm surprised Silkworm didn't even make it into that other one.
It probably was left out so that other bands had a chance of winning
-
Tommy, that's not exactly fair, you didn't even make a chart.
There, now it's settled.
-
You forgot to put Tsilkworm in there.
-
McLusky. Fact: Their Band >> Your Band
-
They've got more songs than a song convention.
-
McLusky
Man, fuck this band.
-
Man, most of you only like Silkworm because you want to sleep with Tommy.
-
McLusky
Man, fuck this band.
Yes. I would fuck this band so hard.
-
Ehh, you can probably only snag like two of 'em at the same time by now. The bassist- does your dick reach all the way to Austrailia?
-
On a good day, maybe.
-
When A Shoggoth on the Roof has an erection, he’s often mistaken for a prototype space elevator.
-
See, the problem with these polls is that you're all only focusing on one broad genre of music.
But I can see why you wouldn't want to expand it. I mean it would be pretty difficult having to decide between Count Basie's "Old Testament" and "New Testament" bands when they faced off against each other in the final.
-
I've never heard of Silkworm. :-(
-
They are essentially the best band.
-
They are pretty okay.
-
A lot of people haven't, and we all feel awfully sorry for them. It's sort of unknowingly being a Christian and not knowing who Jesus was.
(hey look it's jesus (http://www.mediaf!re.com/silkworm))
...and there was light.
-
Okay guys, balls on the line here.
This Silkworm thing is a joke, right?
I mean, come on.
-
Merriweather Post Pavilion, anyone?
-
Hey, guys.
The Weakerthans.
Amirite?
-
I'm not sure if I should be laughing or angry.
-
Plea From a Cat Named Virtue is a fucking brilliant song.
-
I like the sequel more.
-
Silkworm sucks. There, I said it. they are boring, depessing, and any song they make that would actually be good is ruined by the fact that they can't sing (see: "wet firecracker"). Sorry guys.
also the Weakerthans are great.
-
I don't think there is a single bad song in their repertoire.
-
I'm going to throw up now.
-
Do we need another "let's be dicks about other people's taste in music" thread? Because those already account for like... half the music forum.
-
guys stop sucking tommy's dick. seriously. (i still haven't gotten around to listening to silkworm and probably won't anytime soon, thanks to this ridiculous forum hype)
also what is up with this thread?
-
Jawbreaker>Silkworm, Blake Schwarzenbach fucks your mothers.
-
Merriweather Post Pavilion, anyone?
Annoyed me to the point of random violence.
-
A lot of people haven't, and we all feel awfully sorry for them. It's sort of unknowingly being a Christian and not knowing who Jesus was.
(hey look it's jesus (http://www.mediaf!re.com/silkworm))
And yet I do not see any Firewater there. For shame.
-
Silkworm is not a very good band.
-
the movie was better
-
A lot of people haven't, and we all feel awfully sorry for them. It's sort of unknowingly being a Christian and not knowing who Jesus was.
(hey look it's jesus (http://www.mediaf!re.com/silkworm))
Thanks for that, Much appreciated.
-
Hey, if we're going to do this again, here's a suggestion seeing as how we've already done a band elimination poll once before: what say we do an album elimination poll instead?
-
that could be fun
-
Jawbreaker+Neil Young=Silkworm, Blake Schwarzenbach tag teams your mothers with Neil.
Fixed.
There's two sides forming here! People who like Silkworm, and people who don't. There are people with either opinion who need to rethink some of the things they've said in this thread.
Those who don't like Silkworm, don't accuse people who do of sucking on Tommy's little gentleman because that's really really silly. You're making yourself look really really silly. People are perfectly capable of liking music without administering oral sex to the person who introduces them to it. Silkworm have always had a bigger fanbase than just Tommy, I'm afraid. You can like still like Silkworm and disagree with Tommy. Infact, a lot of people often do!
Those of you who do like Silkworm, stop telling everybody that they were the best band ever, because quite frankly, there's plenty of reasons why people wouldn't like Silkworm. We get it. You really like Silkworm. Calm down. Nobody wants to listen to people who get hysterical over something. You'd stand a better chance of introducing people to a band if you presented them with just the facts, without all the panting. It's no use telling me you love the band, because a lot of people with shitty taste tell me the exact same thing about a lot of awful, awful bands.
Silkworm were a regular rock band, and they were better than most bands that are just regular rock bands. If you don't like regular rock music, you won't like Silkworm. If you do like bands that take their sound from 60s rock bands, then you might like Silkworm. The singers can sing, however sometimes they go out of their range or their voices crack on earlier records. They're distinctive, so the singers will either make it or break it for some people.
People who like Silkworm, really, REALLY love Silkworm. People who do not can't understand what all the fuss is about. Arguing with somebody about whether or not Silkworm were any good is a stupid and pointless task. You either disagree and will disagree forever, or you'll share the same opinion and jerk eachother off until one of you gets bored.
Also, I don't care who the band is, I think that posting an entire discography in a public forum is a dick move. Especially when that band has sold less records than my grandma. Sorry Jens. It's okay, I know you're not a dick, but I still think it's a dick move Don't give them a cake when you can give them a slice.
To summarise: People who like Silkworm, and people who do not like Silkworm, all need to be quiet.
-
See, I was just trying to fellate Tommy in a different manner than everyone else. Because sloppy seconds are, well...sloppy.
-
Tommy can't reach an orgasm unless you're screaming about how much you love Silkworm.
-
Hey, if we're going to do this again, here's a suggestion seeing as how we've already done a band elimination poll once before: what say we do an album elimination poll instead?
It would be more interesting if I was allowed to pick all the albums we voted on. Hazel Steps Through a Weathered Home versus You Must Be Certain of the Devil. Go go go!
-
Silkworm have always had a bigger fanbase than just Tommy, I'm afraid.
I like Silkworm and I have no idea who this Tommy guy is. Sounds like he gets a lot of action though!
(They are a fun band but I think it's funny how much rabid hostility there seems to be over them on this forum.)
OnTopic: A Band Elimination Poll seems like it would be a fun thing! So... is this actually going to happen?
-
You can add me to that list too!
Bust seriously, I thought that all of the "Silkworm is so good I'd blow them for years to come (or maybe cum?)" posting was mostly tongue in cheek, as was the "anyone who likes Silkworm wants to blow Tommy until they develop lock jaw".
I think maybe Sox was taking all of the posting in this thread a little too seriously.....or maybe I like to think that everyone is joking when they're dead serious.
All of this aside, I completely agree with Tommy, this could work out really well and maybe produce some results we wouldn't expect!
-
Silkworm are pretty good I guess but
THE STOOGES
I mean how many times do I have to say it. Also, Fugazi, cunts.
-
Oh fuck you for ruining my thing tommy
-
I'd probably just vote for the band that is most similar to kyuss.
-
Do I need to make one of those pictures that shows Kyuss battling Kyuss all the way to the finals?
-
It wouldn't work. Kyuss could never lose one of these matches - not even against itself.
-
The problem is that "best" band very rarely equals "favourite" band for me. I can objectively recognise that most of the bands included in the original poll are probably "better" and "more important" and "more groundbreaking" what-have-you than X, but damned if I didn't scan the list thinking "Why the hell isn't X on here?" and then think to myself "I would rather listen to X than just about any of these bands".
To name just one example.
-
Are you serious? X doesn't belong anywhere on the list!
-
You keep telling yourself that. Meanwhile I'm going to be listening to Los Angeles and having an awesome time.
-
Oh man. I didn't realize you were actually referring to the band X. I thought you were saying band 'X' as in a stand in for your favorite bands....I was just being an ass, and it turns out that instead of acting like an ass I became one!
-
if the final four of this album face off things ends as fire water, spiderland, fun house, aeroplane over the sea i may have to kill myself
-
Holy Crap did someone say Kyuss?
*Air guitars Gardenia*
-
aeroplane over the sea
This will probably win, and then I'll immolate myself.
Actually, no I won't, because that's what everybody on here wants.
Especially Khar.
-
I think an album elimination type thing would be better than a band elimination thing. Like that thread we had a year or two ago cutting down Sgt. Pepper's... and eventually ended in Abbey Road
-
There is a piece of Graffitti in the toilet of my local rock club. It's very neatly written in ready biro (?) It simply says
"KYUSS ARE BETTER THAN YOU"
Whenever I'm having a bad night, or I'm sick of them playing terrible music I make sure I can sit in the stall, read the words and then I'm happy,
I've never heard Silkworm.
-
I'm willing to try and organize a series of head-to-head polls. Bands should be pre-ranked so that "strong" bands come up against weaker bands early on. It *will* be randomized other than that so that we get weird head-to-heads.
-
Nominated in this thread so far:
Joy Division
Silkworm
Boris
The Weakerthans
Jawbreaker
The Stooges
Fugazi
Kyuss
We'll need like... 64 bands at least to make things interesting.
-
Mclusky really wasn't in the last poll; I think they should be added in.
Also I was kinda surprised to see The Modern Lovers weren’t in the last poll either. They may not have been around long enough to be in the running for best band but if there's a best-album poll, The Modern Lovers certainly deserves a place in there.
-
Bedhead.
Crazyhorse.
Thecramps.
-
thebeefiftytoos
-
Fltwd Mack
-
Creedence.
-
And Creedence.
...and Coheed and Cambria.
-
I will be offended if you guys don't respect my opinion enough to include Dashboard Confessional, AFI and Pennywise.
-
Motherfucking MASTODON
seriously, guys
-
Bedhead.
If we lived in a perfect and just world...
-
I'd like to nominate the following:
Neko Case
Sleater-Kinney
Frog Eyes
Beat Happening
Death Cab for Cutie
Bikini Kill
Also, I'd like to second the nomination of Bedhead.
-

Aye, the Modern Lovers album is brilliant.
If this is going ahead as an album contest then I nominate of the top of my head:
Black Foliage: Animation Music (The Olivia Tremor Control)
Hissing Fauna, are you the Destroyer? (of Montreal)
Tonight's the Night (Neil Young)
On the Beach (Neil Young)
Crazy Love (Honey is Cool)
-
I am sure I will not be alone in this but Okkervil River should be put on the best band nomination list, maybe not best band ever, but one of the best currently active bands.
Also:
"Ctrl-f - S-l-o-a-n". Why is there only one mention of Sloan and that was Tommy's comment. Plus I third Bedhead's nomination and I shall be the "umpteenth" supporter for Silkworm.
-
guys, guys. Owls
-

You're certain you wouldn't rather just nominate the entire Current 93 discography?
-
guys, guys. Owls
Ineligible.
-
I will be offended if you guys don't respect my opinion enough to include Dashboard Confessional, AFI, Pennywise, and Jimmy Eat World.
You forgot one.
-
Thanks man. How I forgot the greatest band of our generation.
-
I would like to nominate:
Thick as a Brick (Jethro Tull)
Birds of Fire (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
Fragile (Yes)
and, Alice in Chains s/t album, the tripod one.
-
Modest Mouse
Deerhoof
I also second Neko Case
-
Wait, are we doing bands or albums?
I'll put bands, with an album from each just in case.
Pink Floyd (The Wall)
The Beatles (Revolver)
Black Flag (Damaged)
Minor Threat (Out Of Step)
Blur (Parklife)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus)
Faith No More (Angel Dust)
The MC5 motherfuckers! (Kick Out The Jams)
NWA (Straight Outta Compton)
Queen (The Works. Hey, it's my favourite)
Radiohead (In Rainbows, for its beautiful simplicity)
Refused (The Shape Of Punk To Come)
Weezer (Weezer, 1994)
Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
-
Bedhead.
What the hell is wrong with you?
-
That just made me miss Luke.
-
Luke liked Coldplay.
-
Jesus guys Public fucking Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back.
And while I'm on hip-hop, Black Star if we are doing albums eliminations.
-
People, people. All this talk about albums and you have neglected the obvious winners, so i'm going to nominate it for you:
The Crane Wife by The Decemberists
Also, just to hedge my bets:
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
Tarkio - Sea Songs For Landlocked Sailors (An EP but who cares when it's this good)
-
Why would any of that turgid crap win?
The only albums I can think of qualified to people such a list.
Agalloch - The Mantle
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Coil - Horse Rotorvator OR Loves Secret Domain
Current 93 - All The Pretty Little Horses
Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Hawkwind - Doremi Fasol Latido
Sol Invictus - The Hill of Crosses
Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats
Enough for a competition let's GO!
-
Eeeeeeeeeend Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiits
And, uh, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Seriously, step up the game, guys.
-
So, are we actually going to do this then?
-
Eeeeeeeeeend Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiits
And, uh, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Seriously, step up the game, guys.
You have a disease. There is only one cure.
Single bullet to the base of the spine. That's the kindest way.
-
Couldn't you just lock him in a room with speakers which played nothing but Throbbing Gristle?
I can't decide which cure would be more punishing.
-
Guys we should definitely do this, with albums. Judging from the way it worked last time, everybody nominated bands, and then the bands with the most nominations made it into the actual vote-off, and they were arranged according to "seeding." This all seems like a pretty smart way of doing things.
I'd be glad to organise this deal if nobody else wants to. Should we (me?) start a new thread for nominations?
Perhaps everybody nominates their top five albums, with a maximum of one album per band. The top, say 64 albums could make it into the finals, with the "seeds" assigned to the top 32 based on votes received. Tie-breakers will be decided based on total number of votes the band received across all of their albums. The "seeded" albums will be matched randomly to "unseeded" albums for the first round of voting.
Should we allow more than one album per band? Could we arrange a way for people to upload the nominated albums into the mediafire thread or a seperate "album battle" thread? Is 64 albums way too many? Not enough?
How do people feel about this?
-
Definitely one album per band. Otherwise it'll just be "which band had the best albums", which is basically the same as "which band was the best band".
-
Don't call me that.
Ten albums might be OK, I just don't want to have to spend too much time putting this thing together, y'know. I'm kind of busy.
-
That means I can only pick one Miles Davis album?
That's easy. The answer, as I've said many times before here, is 'Round About Midnight.
-
That means I can only pick one Miles Davis album?
That's easy. The answer, as I've said many times before here, is A Tribute to Jack Johnson.
FYP
-
No, you changed my post to misrepresent my opinion. Poor form!
-
:( please don't ban me, I will post good from now on :(
:-D HEY WHAT THE HELL WHY ISN'T THAT A T-REX SMILEY ANYMORE
-
Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys.
That is all.
-
If we're doing ten each, I'll modify my previous post to include my ten:
Pink Floyd (The Wall)
Black Flag (Damaged)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus)
Faith No More (Angel Dust)
The MC5 motherfuckers! (Kick Out The Jams)
Radiohead (In Rainbows, for its beautiful simplicity)
Refused (The Shape Of Punk To Come)
Weezer (Weezer, 1994)
Wilco (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)
-
You have a disease. There is only one cure.
Single bullet to the base of the spine. That's the kindest way.
But then I'd have to stop liking all the albums you mentioned, because of a, uh, slight case of being dead.
-
London Calling - The Clash
Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
The Black Saint & the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
Doolittle - The Pixies
Take it from the Man! - The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Singles Going Steady - The Buzzcocks
Ramones - The Ramones
Psychocandy - The Jesus & Mary Chain
-
Dovey, if you want help, PM me.
Should we create a separate thread specifically for nominating albums, as this thread doesn't have a clear beginning of album nominations? Also, we should have a cut-off point for nominations; say, 23 March at 18:00 GMT. 10 albums by 10 separate bands max. No double- (or triple- or etc.-) nominating albums. There are rules, people; RULES!
-
Ok, took it upon myself to start a separate nomination thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,22797.0.html).
-
Excellent!
-
It also increases the amount of work the people putting this together have to do. I already suggested a way to break ties (band with the most votes over all albums takes it).
-
I was wondering about the initial nomination process, too. I think the problem with an album poll, vs. the earlier a band poll, is that you'll see a much wider spread of possible choices. Looking over the nomination thread, I'm hard-pressed to find a single album that’s nominated by even 20% of the people, which doesn't speak much to consensus. Furthermore, the band-with-the-most-albums tiebreaker isn't entirely fair: it'd penalize bands who've put out fewer albums, simply because they have less other options to use as a tiebreaker. It also can't deal with the possibility of a tie between albums from the same artist (how many Dylan albums are nominated already?).
Could I suggest a second preliminary round? Perhaps from the pool of nominated albums on March 23, everyone ranks 20 albums by a points system (your favorite gets 20 pts, second gets 19 pts…) and the however-many bands with the most points go to the voting rounds. That'll give a much more concrete, finely-graded system for rankings, and---since we're forced to vote for at least 10 albums we didn't nominate ourselves---it'll hopefully help albums of general quality to rise to the top by somewhat mitigating personal taste. Personal taste in albums can be sufficiently determined by the real vote-elimination portion.
-
That is a good idea, but isn't the album with the most points then already the winner? OR would we still go to the bracket and seeding system in hopes of an upset somewhere down the road / to spur discussion of the merits of each particular album.
Hmm... good point.
I was just trying to figure out if there was a way to get better brackets. I was just seeing how there were tons of good albums that only had one or two nominations and feeling like, if the bracket selection got down that far, choosing which got in could be essentially random.
-
Problem with albums is that there are so many that it'll be hard to limit the number participating. That's why I suggested a band poll at first.
But since that's been done already...
