Title: Hip-Hop, Preferably Old School
Post by: Catacombs on 24 Mar 2009, 21:14
Ok, QC Music forums, I have a task for you.

My group of friends at college enjoy a drinking game known as "Power Hour", which is where you take a shot of beer every minute for an hour.  This is most fun when done to music, IE a different song every minute.

So the point of this topic is: they put me up to making a 60(or more, but it has to be at least 60) song power hour mix of hip-hop songs, preferably old school hip-hop.  However, I do not know much about hip-hop in general, let alone old school hip-hop.  So what songs come to mind when you think of old-school or classic hip-hop?  Really, any suggestions are welcome, and I'll even post the final mix in the mediafyre thread when I'm done with it!  ANYTHING that comes to mind is welcome, and thanks in advance!

Well you really can't go wrong with NWA, or the solo projects from any of its members.

There are newer "old school" hip hop acts like Blackalicious and Little Brother that you might want to look into.

If you want songs which would work well for drinking from old-school hip-hop, I suggest these, either for lyrical or musical content:

Dr. Dre - Lyrical Gangbang
Public Enemy - Welcome To The Terrordome
Public Enemy - One Million Bottlebags
Eazy-E - Niggaz My Height Don't Fight
NWA - Express Yourself
NWA - If It Ain't Ruff

One Beer by MF DOOM, as a matter of fact, the whole MM..FOOD album. It only came out in 2004 but most would call it old school.

Do you want songs, albums, just a name of a DJ/Rapper?

I'll put down a couple of albums which I've personally drank to.

Big L - The Big Picture
Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous

Insane free style, great flow, and of my all time personal favorites.

Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die

Biggie's stuff recently became popular due to the whole gay movie, don't let that keep you away from his work. He's good, he's been good, and he'll stay good even with all the 13 year old holister twats jerking off to the movie.

Black Star (  Mos Def and Talib Kweli ) - Black Star

I think it was their first album, very smooth shit.

Gang Starr - Hard To Earn

They've got some hits and flops, at times it feels like he's talking to himself, but does it really matter if you're drunk?

Jeru The Damaja - The Sun Rises To The East

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

A classic.

That's about it off of the top of my head. I'll post more if you really need 'em.

I see that Eric B. & Rakim has already been mentioned, but Lyrics of Fury (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVCQZcgzp4E) absolutely needs to be on there as well. It's pretty much old school rap taken to its logical extreme, to the point it where would be self-parody if Rakim wasn't so good at what he does. From the second it kicks in you know you're listening to '80s rap, but in no way should that be taken as an insult.

13 year old holister fagets jerking off to the movie.

Please don't use that word that way. It might be a convenient mean name to call people, but your particular use of it is distasteful.

Thanks a ton everyone, I'm gonna start going thru this stuff tomorrow afternoon as soon as my midterm is over.

And for anyone else, specific songs are what I'm looking for, but I'm still gonna look into all the above artists/albums.

This thread has put me in a hip hop mood (for the first time in a long time) too. I didn't do anything but listen to MF DOOM and KMD all afternoon.

Fail on the word 'gay.'

The soundtrack to the film is well worth buying, mind. Worth the entry fee for 'Party And Bullshit,' really.

Yes, in fact Life After Death is one of something like only four rap albums to be certified diamond.

Point is, after the film, shit-tons of people ended up liking his music that didn't before.

Black Sheep.

Part of the Native Tongues family (tribe called quest, de la soul, jungle brothers) but a little more gangster. One of the best hip-hop acts ever, and criminally overlooked. Definitely need to listen to them.

Hey everyone, so after checking out (and really enjoying) most of you recommendations, I'm still looking for more.  I'm really digging a lot, especially the Eric B & Rakim stuff.  But I decided to go with any hip-hop, but with a decent part of it being oldschool.  So do you have any recommendations for modern hip-hop that you'd like to drink to?  Thats a big part too: something you'd like to drink to.

Again, thanks a ton everyone  :-)
