Give me music with banjos in it. I have a massive banjo boner right now. I may be inheriting a banjo. I may have extremely fond memories from my past involving the banjo.
What is good music with banjos? Any genre.
-
It may only be on my mind because I just finished watching Bowfinger, but Steve Martin just released a banjo album. Haven't heard it, but it's Steve Martin + Banjos so how bad can it be?
-
Any genre.
Only genre you need for banjos: bluegrass.
-
No, not quite. Mostly, yes, but not quite.
For The Turnstiles makes excellent use of the banjo.
I would love to hear the banjo more places and not have it sound out of place.
-
I know a lot of folks don't like Sufjan, but Sufjan Stevens?
-
Any genre? Irish folk music. Awesome. Barney from The Dubliners is a god with a banjo.

THIS. I play Banjo, and two songs inspired me to learn. For The Turnstiles was one of them, the other was Gun Street Girl by Tom Waits. Neither are bluegrass.

True Story: My Dad had a banjo when I was a kid (me being a kid = the 70s and 80s). About three weeks ago I asked my Mom where Dad's banjo is because I too have gotten a bit of a banjo boner lately. She tells me that when my cousin came to visit them last summer, he asked if he could have it and my Dad gave it to him.
Two things-- a) How is it that the banjo sits in a basement for 20 years without anyone giving it a second thought and all of a sudden my cousin and I both have an interest in it at approximately the same time, and b) What does my cousin need a banjo for? I don't want to make comments that will unintentionally offend anyone, except to say that banjo music doesn't fit into his lifestyle-- at all-- as far as I can tell.

Someone mentioned Sufjan Stevens. Does it make me lame if I say his album 'Seven Swans,' which is basically all him singing and playing banjo with very little other instrumentation, is really awesome? Because it is really awesome. I also recommend 'Okkervil River''s 'Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See' which has some banjo on it (but a lot more sweet, sweet mandolin).

I come from a family involved with the bluegrass business. Two words: BELA FLECK

Steve Martin is an amazing banjoist.
I don't really understand the angst against Sufjan... Try the Seven Swans album.
Do Iron & Wine use banjos? I'm pretty sure they do.
When you inherit your banjo, use a violin/viola/cello bow across it. The sound is indescribable and, though not entirely lovely, is worth listening to. It's a little like a sitar...
Which reminds meeee. This band came to a tea house near my school and brought a ukulele, a banjo, three guitars (one with 12 strings) and a jimbey drum. They're called The Momentary Prophets.

Give 'em a try. I think that album has SOME banjoing in it.

Iron & Wine is just one dude named Sam Beam (unless his beard has finally gained sentience and I am uninformed) and I'm pretty sure he plays banjo on several tracks but not a lot.
-
My friend Andru Bemis plays a pretty mean banjo:

It's worth checking out the Harry Smith Folk Anthology. Lots of great banjo in there.

Akron/Family (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIUHrL1NxAI) uses a banjo quite a bit on their album "Love Is Simple" Not as much on their others.
O'Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRaiPCFTw-0) is another pretty good band that regularly uses a banjo, if you can get past the singer's voice.

William Elliot Whitmore
oh noo i got beat to willy whitmore
hmmm how bout Ralph Stanley
-
oops i forgot about Mr. Bear. he uses banjo quite regularly.
his album "These Machines" is in the MF thread and it's fantastic. it amazes me that one 20 or 21 year old kid could play so many different instruments so well, AND write such clever and moving lyrics.

After about a 20 yr hiatus I find myself looking at getting my banjo-ing back on. My old 5 string disaster will need to be replaced because new it sounded like teh shite. Maybe if the wife gets an upright bass I'll get a cheap tenor and a nicer intermediate 5 string. (and an alto sax...and a red fire engine...)

THE DILLARDS!!
Their album Wheatstraw Suite is a brilliant record, with some nice banjo picking here and there. I would reccommend listening to the last track: "She Sang Hymns out of Tune" first.

(For some reason the link is turning the "i" in "mediafire" into an "!". If you replace it in the URL, it will work)

The Mediafire think is an automatic, forum-wide filter. It prevents anyone from outside the forums from finding the Mediafire thread too easily, subsequently getting Jeph into trouble.
