Festival Season is upon us!
I bring this up cause I'm seeing some amazing line ups in where I won't be this summer.
Rock Werchter:
Coldplay, The Killers, Placebo, Metallica, Kings of Leon, ?Limp Bizkit?, Oasis, Mastodon, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Dave Matthews Band, The Streets, Amy McDonald, Elbow, 2manydjs, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Prodigy, Katy Perry, Tiga, Seasick Steve, Jason Mraz, Emiliana Torrini, Henry Rollins-Spoken Word, Nine Inch Nails, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, The Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, Pendulum, Laurent Garnier, Röyksopp, Mogwai, Ghinzu, Fleet Foxes, Social Distortion, Lady Gaga, Just Jack, Priscilla Ahn, M. Ward, The Hickey Underworld, Black Eyed Peas, Boys Noize, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Eagles of Death Metal, White Lies, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Regina Spektor, The Script, De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, Expatriate.
I would go for those 9 names alone. I can't believe Metallica is going again. I think it's the 6th time?
But seriously, Limp Bizkit?
Also Dour:
http://www.dourfestival.be/en/2009/lineup
of note: MSTRKRF, I'm From Barcelona, Deerhoof, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Digitalism, Crystal Castles, 65daysofstatic, 5 Elements of Hip Hop (?!?!), The Aggrolites.
I would go to Dour. Yes I would.
You guys eyeing anything? Thinking of doing something special? Wish you could go somewhere? Why is Limp Bizkit touring?
-
Why is Limp Bizkit touring?
They're touring because, in a sure sign of the imminent apocalypse, they've reunited.
-
shut up shut up shut up the only good music festivals we get here are dance music festivals and if you thought the amount of dudes with their shirts off, being obnoxious dicks was high at a normal music festival wait until the headliner is the Chemical Brothers
Also technically festival season is over in the Southern Hemisphere although I'm waiting on the 09 splendour lineup since its usually pretty passable and I kind of want to actually go this year.
-
Oh and ATP New York September looks frakking amazing.
The obnoxious dudes without shirts is why I have reservations about Dour.
-
Primavera looks fucking amazing this year.
Neil Young, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine!
Shame that it's during my exams.
-
Sasquatch 2009 is the only festival for me!
Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction (all orig. members), Ben Harper & the Relentless7, Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Decembrists, TV on the Radio, The Walkmen, of Montreal, Animal Collective, M83, The Wrens, Calexico, Doves, Devotchka, Crystal Castles, Fleet Foxes, Gogol Bordello, Grizzly Bear, Santigold, Silversun Pickups, Explosions in the Sky, Demetri Martin, Bon Iver, The Dutchess and the Duke, Girl Talk, Bishop Allen, Passion Pit, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, M. Ward, Ra Ra Riot, The Gaslight Anthem, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, The Avett Brothers, The Murder City Devils, John Vanderslice, The Dodos, The Airborne Toxic Event, Blitzen Trapper, Horse Feathers, and even freaking more.
-
I'm thinking about doing Starscape (http://www.starscapefestival.com/artists.html) again this year.
Bands I'd see:
Disco Biscuits
Bassnectar
Lotus
Leko
Evol Intent
Only thing is, tickets are like 55$, plus money for drugs on top of that and water is going to end up being like 80$. And I might have to buy two tickets. ARGH. It'd probably be cheaper for me to just go find some X and make a few mix CD's.
-
Fuck y'all and your damn festivals!
fuck yooooooouuuuuu

Oh man. That is awesome.
-
i'll be at Sasquatch on Monday! come and find me!
i'll be the skinny white boy, stoned out of his mind with a sunburn.
-
What a coincidence! That's exactly who I was last year. This year it's SKINNY WHITE SUNBURNT STONER BOI II: THE VENGEANCE!

If there was a decent metal festival around here I would go, but yeah, no.
-
I'm gonna be at the Øya festival (http://oyafestivalen.com/pages/eng/1-news) in August, bands I'm looking forward to see so far are:
Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, Datarock, Röyksopp, Beach House, Bon Iver, Chairlift, Harrys Gym and I Was A King.
Many more will be announced during the next months, it will be so great.
Also about that Rock Werchter festival, I really don't like the lineup (and I've already seen the few bands I like before), but there's a small chance I'm gonna be there anyway since I might be in the area and my friend kinda wants to. Well who knows, at least I could make my brother jealous by seeing Rollins.
-
Beirut?!
JEALOUSY :x
-
I know! It's so great! He was on the lineup last year too, but ended up canceling all of his European shows that summer and I was so sad. I'm so excited about getting to see him this summer, hopefully he wont cancel this time.
-
have you ever seen A Hawk and a Hacksaw? amazing live band. don't miss an opportunity to see them, if you can help it.
oh, and on the off chance that you haven't heard them (!!!) they are a similar sort of eastern European folk music, usually centered around accordion and holy shit they are fantastic.
-
Haven't seen them yet, but it's funny you should mention that since they're playing here at the end of May. I can't wait, apparently this is a really good year for live music in Oslo!
-
Would Warped Tour really be considered a festival? I don't know, but I am looking forward to it regardless.
-
No. For the second year in a row, I am too fucking old for Warped Tour and the bands all fucking suck.
-
They were alright last year. I suppose they're alot better when you're shit faced too.
-
I mean, it's cool if you're into scenecore or whatever. The last Warped I really, really enjoyed was 2006. The only reason I thought about going last year was to see Street Dogs, and I ended up catching them on their headlining tour in Boston in September anyway, for like $15.
-
Yeah, I had wanted to go to Warped for a long time growing up, but then I realized most of the bands I wanted to see are shit.
-
Some good ones I can recall were;
Shwayze
Bring Me The Horizon
Norma Jean
Those were reason enough for me to go last year.
-
I mean, it's cool if you're into scenecore or whatever.
-
Scenecore is rather harsh, but I suppose.
-

'06 was my last one as well. I might go this year to see Gallows and maybe Bad Religion.
I can understand not liking many of the bands there. I accidentally saw My Chemical Romance live and it almost ruined music forever. But, too old? Pshhh whatever.
Thinking of assing my way on over to Sasquatch. Not too bad of a drive.
-
Just as an example;
When I mention Shwayze, I'm not saying he's any way revolutionary or new in the genre of I smoke pot and make casual music but seriously, fuck off. I've never judged your music choice nor do I really care. I'm seldom concerned if some asshole in Minnesota or wherever has the ego to dictate his musical preference on everyone he meets, but you're just a fucking dick head. Is it too much to ask for you to pull your head out of your ass?
-
Regardless, I don't judge on your mediocre collection of music.
-
ITT: People take things personally.
-
All of your tastes in music are shit compared to mine
s h i t
Take *that* personally!
(BTW, I would love to go to the one with Deerhoof, Aphex Twin, and Venetian Snares, curse living in the middle of fucking nowhere)
-
you totally just judged his music taste by calling it mediocre though!
-
/rant.
-
Avec, try to stop being a little condescending.
Sam, stop taking the whole Sheperd Fairey thing personally.
-
shwayze? are you kidding? if you want to listen to tepid porridge get a bowl of it, cheaper than tickets
bmth blow
norma jean were alright when they were ripping off coalesce i guess
-
I fail to see your point with that.
-
:-o
People dislike Deerhoof?
Fuckers!!!
/tongue-in-cheek

Argh, so jealous. I haven't been able to see any good bands recently because they all seem to think London is the only place in the UK worth visiting. THERE IS MORE TO THE UK THAN LONDON, YOU COCKS.
Also, i am part of said Deerhoof group because they suck balls.
-
I am waiting for an invite. Of course, I know you guys probably need my name or something. Hrm.
-
Well, sure, I can see how you might not like Deerhoof when you have such badass music as this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt44trT4awE&fmt=18) to compare it with.
-
Hell, there's a facebook group spawned from this forum dedicated solely to hating on Deerhoof because there are also people who like it here.
What? Really? Why has nobody told me about this, I feel betrayed. Shane is this your thing? I am one of the founders of the Anti-Deerhoof Society on these forums, I demand an explanation.
-
Yeah Shane what the fuck where is my invite you bitch.
Also Sam actually has pretty damn good taste in music so there is your argument out the window.
-
Im probably going to the Lowlands festival again.
Names so far:
* Arctic Monkeys
* Basement Jaxx
* Bon Iver
* La Caravane Passe
* Crookers
* Boys Noize
* Enter Shikari
* Sonata Arctica
* Kyteman's Hiphop Orkest*
* Opeth
* Bloc Party
* Rusko
* The Prodigy
-
Dovey, there is no invite. If you do not like them, you are in!
I didn't know there was a facebook group!
-
That makes sense, I'm not friends with Chris on facebook.
(Chris, add me on facebook)
-
I'm not a member of it either. I have no clue what this is.
-
Maybe Jens is just making up stuff to confuse us. That would make sense too.
-
Maybe since he bought an Orange, he found the correct path of musical taste.
-
Yeah I just went through all of Chris' Facebook groups and there is no trace of an Anti-Deerhoof group there either.
Who is up for making one? (i.e; I Am Not)
-
I think it's the thought that counts
-
Because you secretly hate Deerhoof but are afraid to admit it.
Join us, joooin uuus
-
Yup, definitely not part of any Anti-Deerhoof group on Facebook. I mean, I started the article on the Quiki but that's about it.
-
(Not anymore apparently (see title))
-
Oh weird I am listening to Deerhoof right now. I don't really care if people like their music or not, but watch this interview (http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/33-deerhoof/8) and tell me you don't wanna be friends with them.
-
I don't! No need to watch the interview. My theory has always been that nobody likes Deerhoof but it's way too cool to like them and everyone's too afraid to come out, as it were. Think of this place as your warm bubble guys. You can be comfortable here. Just say it. Say it out loud. "Deerhoof isn't good. They're just not good at all." Say it once and you'll have moved past your denial and will be one step closer to accepting what we all know is true deep down inside.
-
(http://scienceblogs.com/afarensis/upload/2007/06/hoof-off.gif)
You know you wanna.
-
I'm pretty sure I am the original and greatest Deerhoof hater.
-
No understanding of Deerhoof hate! They're not fantastic but I've liked a good few of their songs, particularly off of "Friend Opportunity."
-
Seconded. I like me some quirky music.
-
The trip to go was called off, but up until recently I was supposed to trek up to the Meadowlands and go to Bamboozle. (http://www.thebamboozle.com/bamboozle/home.php) Mostly because of Third Eye Blind and No Doubt being there. Plus it was going to the Meadowlands to see a show, sounded fun.
that said i kinda like deerhoof you cunts
-
No understanding of Deerhoof hate!
That woman's fucking voice.
-
This coming from a forum that introduced me to Joanna Newsom. :-P
-
I'd
get into a do Joanna Newsom argument.
-
Plus she actually has a good singing voice. So that's two hot things about Joanna Newsom.
-
This coming from a forum that introduced me to Joanna Newsom. :-P
Hey, it got me into drone metal.
-
i really really like one Deerhoof album. i'm not sure which one it is though...it might be called Apple O' or something like that, i forget.
i downloaded some of their other ones, thinking they would be good too and they weren't. i was pretty dissappointed.
-
To be fair...I find Joanna Newsom's voice pretty fucking irritating as well.
-
Does anyone know of any good festivals in Ontario or Quebec? I'm willing to go as far as the northern states.
-
Kazoo! Fest in Guelph is pretty sweet. Last year we had Forest City Lovers (http://www.myspace.com/forestcitylovers), Timber Timbre (http://www.myspace.com/timbertimbre)(!), the Hylozoists (http://www.myspace.com/hylozoists), The Racoon Wedding (http://www.myspace.com/theracoonwedding)(!), Slim Twig (http://www.myspace.com/slimtwig), Brides (http://www.myspace.com/bridesbrides)(!), Jordaan Mason & the Horse Museum (http://www.myspace.com/jordaanmason)(!), The Burning Hell (http://www.myspace.com/mathiaskom), the Bicycles (http://www.myspace.com/thebicycles)(!!!!!), Sandro Perri (http://www.myspace.com/sandroperriunofficial), The Magic (http://www.myspace.com/themagiclove)(!!!!!!), Richard Laviolette & the Oil Spills (http://www.myspace.com/richardlavioletteandtheoilspills), Casey Mecija of Ohbijou (http://www.myspace.com/ohbijou) (I am in a picture on their myspace) doing a solo performance, and a bunch of other stuff.
It goes for like 5 or 6 nights. It's spread around the city, but mostly downtown. It is amazing.
-
So how much does it cost? I might go to that, since Guelph is less than an hour away.
-
Does anyone know of any good festivals in Ontario or Quebec? I'm willing to go as far as the northern states.
There's one in Montreal which has Girl Talk and the Beastie Boys attending. I'm thinking of visiting my brother (who goes to McGill) just for this reason. Man, if other people were down, I would be even more down.
-

You pay individually at each show. They are usually 5 bucks/pwyc unless the show is at the Dublin Street Church then it is 10, or if they are at a place called Jimmy Jazz or Wally's they are free.
I'm not sure how it'll play out this year because one of the main places called the Family Thrift Store was closed down by the city (about a week ago, actually) because they are tearing down the buillding to make room for a library.
-
that said i kinda like deerhoof you cunts
You should listen to SLOAN instead, then.
I'm so sorry.
-

That looks pretty cool. The roots are also playing which is awesome and coldplay which is not that awesome.
-
Ah yes, it's called Osheaga and it has a good line-up so far. Still waiting for more confirmations to see if I'll go. Also, like every year, the Festival de Jazz de Montreal and the Francofolies are must-go. Not sure if it would be considered a festival, but Pop Montreal is always awesome.
Also, I like Deerhoof.
-
Seattle's local festival, Bumbershoot 2009 just began announcing their acts. So far it's a fucking weird list.
Sheryl Crow / Modest Mouse / Katy Perry / Michael Franti & Spearhead / De La Soul / Raphael Saadiq / Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan / The Long Winters / Sly & Robbie & the Taxi Gang / World Party / MSTRKRFT / Roy Ayers / Common Market / UH HUH HER / Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women / Eric Hutchinson / No Age / Matt & Kim / Dead Confederate / The Cave Singers / Swollen Members / Vieux Farka Touré / Lenka / Gang Gang Dance / Todd Snider / Holy F**k / DJ Spooky / Iglu & Hartly / Low vs Diamond / Sera Cahoone / Eleni Mandell / Carrie Rodriguez / The Honey Brothers / Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head / Extra Golden / Cordero / Forgive Durden / Hey Marseilles / Adrian Xavier, and much, much more to be announced.
I mean, there's good to be had... but really? Sheryl Crow? Katy Perry? What happened to my hipster town?
-
apparently even hipster towns have a thing for hot girls that pretend to be lesbians. although I'm not sure why anyone would want this (http://sherylcrowfans.com/files/2008/12/sheryl-crow-live.jpg).
-
hah
-
man, i was all "what happened, Bumbershoot?" reading through that list thinking "uh pass" the entire time until i got to the end...Holy Fuck and Natalie Portman's Shaved Head? i would see the fuck out of those two bands...unfortunately every other band in the lineup sucks.
and i mean, sure Modest Mouse is pretty great but i've already seen them a couple of times and i'm really not that worried about hearing them play their new stuff. sure, i like their new stuff too but it just doesn't compare to their older stuff and, having already seen them play when they were still really good, i just can't seem to care.
-

Yeah but you'd think that Uh Huh Her would satisfy that need. Especially since it seems like they play with Ladytron at my Showbox every other fucking week.
-
Fun Fact: My mom once thought I was gay because I didn't like Katy Perry.
A couple of good artists do not balance out the crap that is on there. Though more would be announced...
-
I like Deerhoof. Just straight up like them.
And The Jesus Lizard are playing Pitchfork this summer.
. . . .
. . . . yes
