Title: Festivals 09 (Now with Deerhoof bashing)
Post by: StaedlerMars on 06 Apr 2009, 04:50
Festival Season is upon us!

I bring this up cause I'm seeing some amazing line ups in where I won't be this summer.

Rock Werchter:

Quote
Coldplay, The Killers, Placebo, Metallica, Kings of Leon, ?Limp Bizkit?, Oasis, Mastodon, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Dave Matthews Band, The Streets, Amy McDonald, Elbow, 2manydjs, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Prodigy, Katy Perry, Tiga, Seasick Steve, Jason Mraz, Emiliana Torrini, Henry Rollins-Spoken Word, Nine Inch Nails, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen, The Mars Volta, Flaming Lips, Pendulum, Laurent Garnier, Röyksopp, Mogwai, Ghinzu, Fleet Foxes, Social Distortion, Lady Gaga, Just Jack, Priscilla Ahn, M. Ward, The Hickey Underworld, Black Eyed Peas, Boys Noize, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Eagles of Death Metal, White Lies, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Regina Spektor, The Script, De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, Expatriate.

I would go for those 9 names alone. I can't believe Metallica is going again. I think it's the 6th time?

But seriously, Limp Bizkit?

Also Dour:

http://www.dourfestival.be/en/2009/lineup

of note: MSTRKRF, I'm From Barcelona, Deerhoof, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Digitalism, Crystal Castles, 65daysofstatic, 5 Elements of Hip Hop (?!?!), The Aggrolites.

I would go to Dour. Yes I would.

You guys eyeing anything? Thinking of doing something special? Wish you could go somewhere? Why is Limp Bizkit touring?

Why is Limp Bizkit touring?

They're touring because, in a sure sign of the imminent apocalypse, they've reunited.

shut up shut up shut up the only good music festivals we get here are dance music festivals and if you thought the amount of dudes with their shirts off, being obnoxious dicks was high at a normal music festival wait until the headliner is the Chemical Brothers

Also technically festival season is over in the Southern Hemisphere although I'm waiting on the 09 splendour lineup since its usually pretty passable and I kind of want to actually go this year.

Oh and ATP New York September looks frakking amazing.

The obnoxious dudes without shirts is why I have reservations about Dour.

Primavera looks fucking amazing this year.

Neil Young, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine!

Shame that it's during my exams.

Ward, Ra Ra Riot, The Gaslight Anthem, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, The Avett Brothers, The Murder City Devils, John Vanderslice, The Dodos, The Airborne Toxic Event, Blitzen Trapper, Horse Feathers, and even freaking more.

I'm thinking about doing Starscape (http://www.starscapefestival.com/artists.html) again this year.

Bands I'd see:
Disco Biscuits
Bassnectar
Lotus
Leko
Evol Intent

Only thing is, tickets are like 55$, plus money for drugs on top of that and water is going to end up being like 80$.  And I might have to buy two tickets.  ARGH.  It'd probably be cheaper for me to just go find some X and make a few mix CD's.

I'm gonna be at the Øya festival (http://oyafestivalen.com/pages/eng/1-news) in August, bands I'm looking forward to see so far are:
Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Beirut, Datarock, Röyksopp, Beach House, Bon Iver, Chairlift, Harrys Gym and I Was A King.
Many more will be announced during the next months, it will be so great.

Also about that Rock Werchter festival, I really don't like the lineup (and I've already seen the few bands I like before), but there's a small chance I'm gonna be there anyway since I might be in the area and my friend kinda wants to. Well who knows, at least I could make my brother jealous by seeing Rollins.

I know! It's so great! He was on the lineup last year too, but ended up canceling all of his European shows that summer and I was so sad. I'm so excited about getting to see him this summer, hopefully he wont cancel this time.

have you ever seen A Hawk and a Hacksaw? amazing live band. don't miss an opportunity to see them, if you can help it.

oh, and on the off chance that you haven't heard them (!!!) they are a similar sort of eastern European folk music, usually centered around accordion and holy shit they are fantastic.
Title: Re: Festivals 09
Post by: Metope on 06 Apr 2009, 16:09
Haven't seen them yet, but it's funny you should mention that since they're playing here at the end of May. I can't wait, apparently this is a really good year for live music in Oslo!

No. For the second year in a row, I am too fucking old for Warped Tour and the bands all fucking suck.

Title: Re: Festivals 09
Post by: valley_parade on 07 Apr 2009, 09:26
I mean, it's cool if you're into scenecore or whatever. The last Warped I really, really enjoyed was 2006. The only reason I thought about going last year was to see Street Dogs, and I ended up catching them on their headlining tour in Boston in September anyway, for like $15.
Title: Re: Festivals 09
Post by: imapiratearg on 07 Apr 2009, 09:27
Yeah, I had wanted to go to Warped for a long time growing up, but then I realized most of the bands I wanted to see are shit.
Title: Re: Festivals 09
Post by: Avec on 07 Apr 2009, 10:13
Some good ones I can recall were;

Shwayze
Bring Me The Horizon
Norma Jean

Those were reason enough for me to go last year.

'06 was my last one as well.  I might go this year to see Gallows and maybe Bad Religion.
I can understand not liking many of the bands there.  I accidentally saw My Chemical Romance live and it almost ruined music forever.  But, too old?  Pshhh whatever.

Thinking of assing my way on over to Sasquatch.  Not too bad of a drive.

Just as an example;

When I mention Shwayze, I'm not saying he's any way revolutionary or new in the genre of I smoke pot and make casual music but seriously, fuck off. I've never judged your music choice nor do I really care. I'm seldom concerned if some asshole in Minnesota or wherever has the ego to dictate his musical preference on everyone he meets, but you're just a fucking dick head. Is it too much to ask for you to pull your head out of your ass?

Argh, so jealous. I haven't been able to see any good bands recently because they all seem to think London is the only place in the UK worth visiting. THERE IS MORE TO THE UK THAN LONDON, YOU COCKS.

Oh weird I am listening to Deerhoof right now. I don't really care if people like their music or not, but watch this interview (http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/33-deerhoof/8) and tell me you don't wanna be friends with them.
Title: Re: Festivals 09 (Now with Deerhoof bashing)
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 08 Apr 2009, 11:10
I don't! No need to watch the interview. My theory has always been that nobody likes Deerhoof but it's way too cool to like them and everyone's too afraid to come out, as it were. Think of this place as your warm bubble guys. You can be comfortable here. Just say it. Say it out loud. "Deerhoof isn't good. They're just not good at all." Say it once and you'll have moved past your denial and will be one step closer to accepting what we all know is true deep down inside.

It goes for like 5 or 6 nights. It's spread around the city, but mostly downtown. It is amazing.

You pay individually at each show. They are usually 5 bucks/pwyc unless the show is at the Dublin Street Church then it is 10, or if they are at a place called Jimmy Jazz or Wally's they are free.

I'm not sure how it'll play out this year because one of the main places called the Family Thrift Store was closed down by the city (about a week ago, actually) because they are tearing down the buillding to make room for a library.

Seattle's local festival, Bumbershoot 2009 just began announcing their acts. So far it's a fucking weird list.

Quote
Sheryl Crow / Modest Mouse / Katy Perry / Michael Franti & Spearhead / De La Soul / Raphael Saadiq / Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan / The Long Winters / Sly & Robbie & the Taxi Gang / World Party / MSTRKRFT / Roy Ayers / Common Market / UH HUH HER / Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women / Eric Hutchinson / No Age / Matt & Kim / Dead Confederate / The Cave Singers / Swollen Members / Vieux Farka Touré / Lenka / Gang Gang Dance / Todd Snider / Holy F**k / DJ Spooky / Iglu & Hartly / Low vs Diamond / Sera Cahoone / Eleni Mandell / Carrie Rodriguez / The Honey Brothers / Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head / Extra Golden / Cordero / Forgive Durden / Hey Marseilles / Adrian Xavier, and much, much more to be announced.

I mean, there's good to be had... but really? Sheryl Crow? Katy Perry? What happened to my hipster town?

man, i was all "what happened, Bumbershoot?" reading through that list thinking "uh pass" the entire time until i got to the end...Holy Fuck and Natalie Portman's Shaved Head? i would see the fuck out of those two bands...unfortunately every other band in the lineup sucks.

and i mean, sure Modest Mouse is pretty great but i've already seen them a couple of times and i'm really not that worried about hearing them play their new stuff. sure, i like their new stuff too but it just doesn't compare to their older stuff and, having already seen them play when they were still really good, i just can't seem to care.
