Title: Umm...
Post by: Surgoshan on 12 Apr 2009, 19:40
So, I've not seen a topic about American Idol or any shit like that.

Watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY).  It is shallow people being shut the fuck up.

Generally speaking this sort of thing isnt just about talent, its also about looks.  And before you go off on how you cant control how you look. well, I think Harper Lee said it best in To Kill a Mockingbird when he wrote "people in their right minds never take pride in their talents." when referring in particular to Atticus' uncanny ability to shoot, but it's sentiments are universal.

She was amazing. I wish people would remember to hold their opinions until after someone performs, because I'm sure that whole audience was thinking, "My god, I'm an ass," after she started.

Last year I remember there was that fat woman who came on, saying she was a single mother and stuff. Simon and Piers were thinking "oh god", Simon even buzzed her out after one second, and then she did this amazing (albeit slightly ridiculous) Britney Spears dance number. Everyone was cheering, Simon admitted he was wrong.

It was a good day. For her, I can imagine

But I guess this is the internet.  Memes live on forever in the minds of teenages.

Anyway why are we talking about Harper Lee when this thread is supposed to be about manipulative-and-probably-staged-to-some-extent British television clips?

I was confused at first too. Then again, they've probably got more talent than Australia. The ads alone are rubbish.

Simon Cowell is in general pretty obnoxious yes, but he does judge fairly most of the time.  Doesn't mean he's not a bit of a shallow cunt but what'reyagonnado?

Still not quite sure what I think about how he went about it.

Simon confuses me. Sometimes he seems like the most level-headed, unbiased member of the team while the others are prancing about with fake enthusiasm and exclamations of amazement, and at others he appears to have a completely superfluous judging method. Despite this, I still prefer him to the other judges, because at least he doesn't fuck around.

Making an ad hominem attack on my statement over some small piece of semantics that was unrelated to my actual point is license to eat me. And to have some other ass waltz in and do the same thing because he was too lazy to read a topic that only has one page?

Well you already know my feelings on the first guy doing it... just sayin'

Arguing part of my statement that neither proves or disproves the statement is pretty textbook. And generally speaking I bite my lip when people say and do stupid things, but Im beginning to think Khar had it right all along.

Hey Matt, I posted that link in a different thread about the same sort of stuff in the music forum.  You probably saw it there.  It linked here.  You should all read it. (http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/2009/04/reality_what_a_concept.html)  It's a great article.

I think where you may be going wrong is assuming this is not the place for "stupid" things (cf. many, many threads). That is to say, I was not being serious. I saw an oddly placed mistake and thought that correcting it might be as or more worthwhile than furthering the topic at hand. I still think I was right in that, though I seem to have provoked some ill feelings, which is unfortunate and rather more unsightly than just derailing a thread.

It's not ad hom though. Ad hom is attacking the arguer instead of the argument.

Well, in recent times women seem to be selected by shows like '... got talent' and others because they're pretty and cannot sing so in essence it's pretty refreshing.
