Title: Great appearances on other people's records
Post by: Thrillho on 19 Apr 2009, 18:53: One of the most annoying things about rap music is that to have any hope of being a completist you need to buy twenty other guys' records to pick up all the collaborations. In the process of just downloading the tunes I wanted (legally) by Notorious BIG from other people's records, I discovered a magnificent tune by he and Michael Jackson called 'This Time Around.' Apparently Michael isn't taking no shit this time. Funny, that.

It's not often that a random collab by someone on a record is the standout, but I realise my favourite song from the Seasick Steve album I own is the one that Nick Cave appeared on.

So - good random collaborations that are unavailable elsewhere, anyone?

Current 93's album Black Ships Ate The Sky also has a lot of great guest appearances, by Will Oldham, Antony Hegarty, Shirley Collins and others.

Will Oldham's appears on a few songs on Scout Niblett's last album, This Fool Can Die Now. The song "Kiss" in particular is a standout.

I'm just gonna go with what Dark Flame said about Jazz, we have Thelonius Monk on Miles Davis, Miles on Coltrane, Louis and Ella, Count Basie and Joe Williams, etc.

My favorite recent collaboration album would have to be "Misery Loves Kompany" by the Strange Music crew, "Midwest Chopper" was just a kick-ass song.

Oh, I just remembered I was thinking about Looptroop's trip to Jamaica and the songs they did with Lady Saw and Ward 21, which were pretty cool.

Particularly good is the live album 'Skol,' recorded in Amsterdam and featuring an amazing trio of Joe Pass, Mickey Roker and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (each of whom get their own rather impressive solo forays throughout the album - the two masters let these guys do their thing which is nice to hear). It's one of my favorite albums largely due to the way Peterson and Grappelli compliment each other and riff off each other so effortlessly. It's pretty perfect.

Have you seen the performer list for the C93's next album? Andrew WK and porn-star Sasha Grey are on it. I'd say that's the biggest musical WTF ever except that Tibet, WK and Grey were all Lee "Scratch" Perry's last album, making *that* the planet's most head-scratching guest-list.

I wasn't trying to make a point, just making an observation. I think if any genre needs more 'b-sides and rarities' compilations, it's rap music, because a rapper's greatest hits will rarely feature his appearances on other people's records, even if they are a great song.

And he hadn't - or just barely - started to record as a leader.

As much as I hate to be a nitpicking asshole, I'm a Beatles fanatic, so nitpick I will. Clapton played on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Same album though...and apparently, lost in the vaults of Apple, there is a version of "Happiness..." with Jim Morrison singing the "Bang Bang Shoot Shoot" part...but we don't talk about that.
Anyway, one of my favorites is David Bowie's "Fame", with John Lennon doing the steadily descending "Fame" part.

Some of my favorites would be Maynard James Keenan on the song "Passenger" off of Deftones' White Pony, James Mercer on about a quarter of Modest Mouse's We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, Jeremy Engick on Mewithoutyou's "O'Porcupine."

I'm not certain what it is, but I almost always enjoy the tracks that are partial collaborations.

also, Walter Schriefels (of Quicksand/Rival Schools) produced Hot Water Music's "No Division" and did some guest vocals on a coupla tracks, notably the doubly-awesome "Gainesville Free Radio."

apparently Alex Chilton did some guest guitar parts on The Replacements' "Can't Hardly Wait" and that is a TUNE.

oh and also, that Dillinger Escape Plan E.P. with Mike Patton on vocals.

David Sylvian suddenly busting out a song in the middle of Fennesz's otherwise instrumental 'Venice' made me a very happy man. Especially as I love David Sylvian's voice and hadn't looked at the liner notes before playing the CD.

Sam Prekop from the Sea and Cake showing up on Last Night off Prefuse 73's first album was pretty much the greatest. Who would've thought his soft croony vox would withstand being chopped and reversed and somehow come out still so smooth? Again, a stand-out track on that album.

I don't like Röyksopp generally, but that Remind Me tune was a goodie basically because of Erlend Øye.

It's a slightly different case, but there're a lot of Dntel tracks I like with guest vocalists I otherwise don't care about - Mia Doi Todd (Rock My Boat), Ben Gibbard (The Dream of Evan And Chan - oh how disappointed I was when I first heard The Postal Service after this...), Jenny Lewis (Roll On), even Conor Oberst (Breakfast In Bed) - but they're not exactly the exceptions cos on his two "proper" albums almost every track has collaborators of some kind. Actually Erlend Øye re-doing Gibbard's vocals on the Safety Scissors remix of the above is awesome too.

Yeah, I don't like Low and actually don't really like that Pan-American album but have never brought myself to sell off the CD after all these years just because of that one track. Hypnotic and lovely. Pan-American's got better and better, btw.
