As long as this doesn't turn into a conversation about your tits I'm alright with it.

Kieffer, for being a kind of pretty dude, every single thread you've made in the past millennium has annoyed the pants off me, and I really don't like you anymore.

Yeah I can only imagine if a new poster started the sort of threads that Animal Ghosts AKA Kieffer (although last time I referred to him with his real name he got all cranky and told me not to do it again) has been posting at the moment they would be told to lurk more and the threads would be locked very quickly.

These, except I don't find you all that attractive(but I have a thing against dudes who willing dress like such a god damn hipster), which whatevs. I am sure you don't find me attractive either and that's all fine and dandy. I don't typically mind your posting, but as of late, its been somewhat whiny, and annoying, and it's like babysitting a spoil 5 year old. None of this is meant to offend you, I'm just being honest.

Oh lord forbid someone makes a pointless thread on the internet.

The slippery slope of this attitude is you can wave away any criticism and say "ITS JUST DA INTERNETS CHILL OUT GUYZ" even if you're being genuinely horrible. Not saying everything should be taken dead seriously, just be consistent.

Hey, AG. Instinct told me to call you Kieffer but apparently you wouldn't like that because really I don't know, and that's fine. You are a pretty attractive dude sometimes. I liked it when you were trying to be the 1970s, and I liked the beard you had for a while.  I like some of your opinions on fashion and music, and you views on Israel/Palestine intrigue me because they are fairly well reasoned and very opposed to my own. You can be an asshole sometimes, but I think mostly you seem like more of an asshole than you are because you don't seem to filter the contents of your brain before you say things.

Actually, yeah I do. Maybe it's just me but I don't mind that either, I've been on a large amount of forums in my time, and this is the most uptight one, but seems to have the most trouble/anxiety over bad posting, yet I've been on forums that have much more quality.

I don't know, if I don't like a poster, I don't click on a topic made by them, unless it's 10+ threads on the front page it doesn't really make a difference. But then again I have never had to not click a thread because I don't like a poster.

I think the amount of whining over new posters or people making pointless posts/etc is kind of ridiculous, and probably the reason there's so much stagnation. I know there's a lot of threads that I haven't made, even if they've been somewhat tolerable, because I do not want people to jump on me.

Oh lord forbid someone makes a pointless thread on the internet.

but the difference is there is nothing genuinely horrible in the past several threads made by kieffer, somewhat spammy? yes, bloggy? yes. But mean? horrible? no. Anyone that knows Kieffer knows that he's a genuinely nice dude, I really don't think it's that big of a deal for people who don't find something funny/interesting just not to click a thread. It's not like it's being blatantly mean and hurtful to anyone. I am all for berating that, but stupid threads are no reason to get your knickers in a knot.

I'm trying to say that it's pretty unfair how, a poster who has been around before/people know, gets away with making up silly threads that would otherwise be left alone or turn into a giant post with people going it was a new poster.  I mean he posted the "I'm listening to Avril Lavrigne" and the "I'm listening to Kate Perry" threads. If someone who just had one post and no one knew came along and did that they would probably just be told to shut the fuck up and post it in the "What am I listening to right now" thread.

I've not really got any beef with AG. More my problem is with the way that people will happily jump on a thread started by a new poster and tell him to shut the hell up and lurk more, whilst a ridiculous thread like this, with a main point that could have easily been made in the blog thread (It's there for a reason) gets respected members of the forums posting in it and not telling AG to move it into the blog thread.

But people know Keiffer is the thing.  You put up with much more from someone you are familiar with than a complete stranger.  It's taken as humourous instead of retarded because the people here generally know that he's not retarded, he's just being silly.  This doesn't mean it's right, but it's certainly understandable.

I don't make these threads posts in the massive threads designed for that purpose because those threads are terrifying entrenched behemoths and also they make me feel like another homogenous internet boarder with feelings and opinions.

And I ain't going out like that
Title: Re: Guys, Tell Me I'm Pretty
Post by: StaedlerMars on 26 Apr 2009, 12:26
Guys, point is, before AG's other threads, every single thread was about 'man, i'm sad, i'm frustrated, i'm upset.' that or the pointless thread. The top of these boards were pretty much constantly dominated by about five threads, and if you don't post in these, then you're pretty much not part of the forums.

I am by no means one of the old forum members, but about a year ago, the front page of this sub forum was a lot more interesting to read. Maybe the move to the Discuss has slowed this down a lot. But the pointless thread has also leeched a lot of good discussion topics. Now when people see something fun they'll put it in the pointless thread, where it kinda gets lost amongst all the other stuff.

Yeah, having everything so centered and organized is neat, but it means that it's all a lot less personal.

Hey Kieffer.

Hey tommy! I am sorry I used to be a huge dick to you, it was completely undeserved. I think you probably just figured it all out a little before I did, and did what you thought best at the time. You are a solid individual, doggo, and if I am ever not on probation/allowed to leave the country/wherever the fuck you are, I would be honored to buy you such as the tastiest glass of single malt and talk the talk of men.

Think about it like this:  you and a bunch of friends are standing around chatting.  Someone you know comes up and says "oh hey guys, I'm not feeling too good, can you cheer me up?"  That would be ok.  If someone you didn't know did the same thing you would tell them to go away.  (Ok, so some people would maybe humour the person, but I'd think the majority wouldn't).

Same thing here.  Kieffer's been around for a good while and has people here who he considers friends.  He is talking to those people in these threads.  If you're not one of those people then feel free to ignore them.  The reason we tell noobs with 5 posts who try to start stuff like this to lurk moar or go talk in the blog thread is so that we get to know them well enough so they are a part of the wider community or at least some subset of it.

I really don't understand why people don't get this.  It's not that "people who have been here longer get away with more" it is that people who have been here longer probably understand how the board works/should work, will probably have more people around who actually care about what they want to say and usually have a stronger link to the underlying community of the board than say, Johnny Newguy with 2 posts starting a thread about how his girlfriend doesn't like Coldplay and what should he do about it, because seriously, fuck that guy.
Title: Re: Guys, Tell Me I'm Pretty
Post by: est on 26 Apr 2009, 20:20
Another thing I want to bring up, with special reference to the newer people on the boards:  If you see a thread like this where it is obviously someone who's been around for a while and a bunch of other people who have obviously been around for a while are debating something about how the board is or whatever you should probably keep out of it.  It's kind of like walking into someone's house where an argument is happening and trying to butt in without knowing anything about the situation.  Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but you're not going to help things much.

Strangely enough it is still pretty easy to slide your eyes about 5cm to the right of the thread title and see it's a post by Kieffer and avoid it.

Or you could maybe judge each thread on it's own merits?  I dunno, that seems preferable.
