Title: The Regret Index
Post by: Jace on 01 May 2009, 06:10
Ryan North (http://www.qwantz.com/) of Qwantz.com (http://www.qwantz.com) (also known as Dinosaur comics (http://www.qwantz.com)) has started the Regret Index (http://www.qwantz.com/regret/index.php).
It's purpose is to index regrets (http://www.qwantz.com/regret/index.php) and have people rate the regrets (http://www.qwantz.com/regret/index.php) that have been submitted.

What do you regret?

Yes this is definitely an idea Ryan North would have!

Actually the ones that have a regret index of either zero or 1 are the best ones. For example, so far nobody on the site regrets their first drink but every single person regrets the time they ordered papa johns  because they were giving away videos of drop dead fred and you wanted one but they didn't have a store that delivered to you and now you think they owe you a DVD

I think one of my favorite one is that every single person regrets "That movie The Spirit."

Not telling the guy at the store to hold that 1973 Fender Competition Mustang for me when I was 16. Stupidly thought it'd still be there the next weekend. Nope.

Not asking out all the girls that I wanted to ask out.

Honestly it's the only thing that really bothers me.

If I didn't do any of the things that I regret I wouldn't have ended up where I am. And where I am is alright.

I regret many decisions I've made; but, in spite of that, little of what I've done.

I only have one true regret : Wasting the last four years of my life on a girl that ended up being completely different than I thought she was the whole time.

Agreed. With the benefit of a couple of years' hindsight I do not regret the awful, damaging first relationship I had because I think it made me a much better boyfriend and a better person in general from then on.

The only thing I really regret is not trying harder in school and not identifying my true talents and exploiting them earlier on.

I only regret the inactions. The idle friday nights. Even if whatever i ended up doing was completely unknown i loved every second of it.

I regret giving up on the guitar the first three times

The fourth time it actually stuck...but I had started playing three years even earlier...

Actually, no. Fuck that, I don't regret it. I would be waist-deep in playing a ton of classic rock and blues and wouldn't have branched out into what I play today.

Okay, I have no regrets. Every bad decision has shaped into making me a better person, has shaped me into who I am today.

I regret not telling you that four years ago.  :|

Still, it's not actually a waste. Think how much you learned about relationships etc. Valuable stuff.

I didn't really learn anything. I learned that no matter how good you treat somebody and completely trust them and be faithful to them they'll still throw it all away and fuck a guy they hardly know just for the hell of it.

And what am I supposed to take from it? I shouldn't try to make the people I care about happy? I should expect to be betrayed by everybody and live completely devoid of emotion?

Some people, no matter how well you treat them, will respond by hurting you. Some people, when given everything you can give, will always want more.

Some people will become cynical, some people will become hardened and hurtful themselves. Every time I'm hurt, I go back and give people I love and trust my all, because I know they might hurt me and abandon me, but I still don't believe in being a jaded person when it comes to relationships and love.

I'm curious ... what EXACTLY did this person "throw away?"

I'm pretty sure that if I follow the line of questioning that this starts, you'll be able to reference more optimistic lessons learned from this experience.

personal regret of mine as well.

Depending on exactly how fresh this break up is.. I don't know if you'll really learn anything from it right away.  It may take months or years even before you start picking up on things you should of noticed durring the relationship.  You can never hope to "make someone happy" .   You can surely try but never expect anything in return.  If you are truly great to someone and they kick it to the side then they are not for you.  Do not let yourself be tread upon.  Give any/all relationships you have your best, but do not be taken.

My regret is forgiving someone who shouldn't have been. Oh well! The thing I learned from that is to not get involved with someone who can't or won't be honest with you and that you can't make something work just by loving them enough. And also that even nice people do shitty things sometimes.
