it's all made by the chief singer/songwriter Tobacco (http://matthewnewton.us/files/images/abr0089.jpg) who is a graphic designer or something when he's not making awesome music.
I've never purchased a CD blindly based just off album artwork, but I have looked into a lot of bands just because their album art was interesting. I think it has a lot of influence on people, either knowingly or unknowingly.
Didn't Aesop Rock do a track with Tobacco not too long ago?
"The Beatles" (White Album)? Hard to repeat though.
Album art rarely plays a part in my purchasing of albums. For example one of my favorite bands has very plain art:I think that's great-looking art! Yeah, plain, but really cool compared to moody drawings or whatever.

I saw this in the mediaf!re thread, had to download it on the spot.
If I dig the art on the album, it is more likely I will get it.
Album art has virtually no influence on whether or not I buy a record. In fact a lot of my favourite artists (Dylan, I'm looking at you) have pretty appalling album art on a fairly regular basis.
Two of my favorite album covers of all time.

serious tits
i know most people say it's "iconic," but to me, it just smacks of laziness. you can have a very simple design that still looks good, but just a blank cover with a couple of words is just pointless. you might as well sell the album in a brown paper bag or a shoebox.

Wait, seriously? This is news to me. I always thought she had a pretty androgynous figure, but then I think my only exposure to what she looks like is from the Horses cover.
She did have a pretty androgynous figure, but often it was attributed to her clothing - she wore baggy t-shirts a lot. You can sort of tell in (semi-NSFW) this pic (http://www.postmodern.com/~fi/pattipics/images/nude_1.jpg) that they're certainly bigger than on the record.

The only time album art has ever made me check out a band was when I stumbled upon a Bye Bye Blackbirds album in Ameoba Berkeley.
Saturdays=Youth
i've never understood why any musician, when given the opportunity to display artwork either by themselves or by another artist on their album sleeve, would opt for a plain and boring cover. not only is it a waste of potential, but it's also gonna be much less eye-catching, so it'll hardly work in their favour.
^ Been listening to this all day. It's aces.Saturdays=Youth
I've met the girl in the fur hat. She's friends with a bunch of my friends who hang out Anthony Gonzales.i've never understood why any musician, when given the opportunity to display artwork either by themselves or by another artist on their album sleeve, would opt for a plain and boring cover. not only is it a waste of potential, but it's also gonna be much less eye-catching, so it'll hardly work in their favour.
Actually I really like those Bedhead covers and think they're pretty eye-catching as opposed to some of the gaudy shit people do (see: Black Moth Super Rainbow artwork, the atrocity that is Mika's Life In Cartoon Motion)
How has no one mentioned Spiritualized yet? Though I guess that's not so much artwork as amazing and incredibly creative album packaging.

A good album cover, that. Works for the band in question.
i'm betting edwinalink has the suicide girls site bookmarked!
Deadsy made important music.
Michael, I've thought for years that the kids on that cover were the best actors of our time. Genuinely great. At the same time, I'm not sure I like it, it makes me feel uncomfortable. Basically, it perfectly suits the album.
My initial post was actually a quote from Fred Durst. Make of that what you will.
Deadsy started out in 1995, when Elijah Blue Allman (known within the band lineup by his stage name Philips Exeter Blue I) decided he would get a record deal to support himself
(http://www.canyouseethesunset.com/uploaded_images/m83-saturdays-youth.jpg)I love album covers that look like this.
'Merriwater Post Pavilion' anyone? I mean.. it captivates your attention if nothing else
Yes had the greatest album art.

Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb [I never thought a Grindcore album could look like this]
god, that new mewithoutyou SUCKED!booooooooo >:/
... but, the album art was interesting... I'll give it that...
Neurosis - Through Silver In Blood
god, that new mewithoutyou SUCKED!
You gotta love Neurosis' albums covers... And the title song of that album, damn I swear those drums at the end melted my brain.
What are the first and fourth albums? Those are the only 2 I don't recognize.
Roughly five years ago I discovered this gem of an album cover at my local record store. Something about the lighting, the pensive posture of the anonymous woman and that generic, antiquated room resonated with me deeply.
Of course, it turned out to be a horrific piece of emo shit, but by then I'd already bought the record.
The fact that the band was called The Early November should have been your first clue.
so many people do that though. The fact that the band was called The Early November should have been your first clue.
Maybe. But that's about as effective a method of judging a band as buying a record based on the cover art.
The band's also a bit of a guilty pleasure for me too.

Why? o.o
Portishead
But I guess the concept of a guilty pleasure doesn't make much sense to me anyhow.
(I apologise for being nitpicky. You can ignore this)

Thought you would never say that... I'm already ignoring the comment..

On the top 5 of my favorite albums... in all genres, ever.
that album is beyond favorite, beyond ridiculous, beyond awesome and even yes... beyond THUNDERDOME! all people with ears should own it.

I totally agree... I think it's my favorite cd ever. Not only the music is really well written, catchy, melancolic and brutal at the same time. But the lyrics are brilliant as well and reflects the sickness of the world.
This is the only cd that really changed the way I view the world...
And damn... It needs more attention imo.
one of those is a lie... :-(
don't worry, I wont tell them... I leave that responsibility to you! :-D

I own 3 out of four of those records. So you would have been right. At least 3 times. I have not heard Howards Alias.

Mr. Doctor, I love woodcut look. It looks like all the images of Plague Doctors mix with Bosch....
They actually are pretty good, I've got that first album (the one with the white cover) and it's even rather fun which isn't something you can always say about black metal. I can send you mp3s if you like, considering I still have two of your books I need to get back to you and I said I'd send you an mp3 CD ages ago.
And I can't believe I forgot to post this one already; among hardcore and metal fans, this image has become as iconic as the Misfits skull.

Since I saw some Cannibal Corpse cover art, I will let everyone know that one of my friends, who is doing some psychology work at a maximum security prison, saw a scene that is as close as anyone will ever get to "Eaten Back To Life." One of the prisoners had ripped open some sutures that were made when he had 37 spoons removed from his stomach (yes) and was chewing on his intestines. If I didn't know this guy, I'd have said it was all a lie, so feel free to call me a liar. I wouldn't believe it either.
I think he's doing pretty okay with it, but he's not doing his next year of school there (he's getting a Psy D, and this is part of the practical part). They never figured out why he did it, and it was about the third time he'd ripped open the sutures. He's going to work with kids next year, which will hopefully be better.
Esoteric - The Manical Vale (http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/3034/esotericm.jpg)
What does jejeje mean? This has been bugging me for a while.Just like Beopuppy and evilbobthebob said... j=h. And since I'm a spanish speaker I use the j. Sometimes I don't remember that in english it's supposed to be with H :-P
Dude has better taste in music than some. Except for that unfortunate drone obsession. Thanks for the coment :) And about drone...I wouldn't call it an obsession since I don't listen to it that often but I do listen to more than just 3-4 bands of that genre.
Call it what you will, I still say it's a llama. Pretty pictures, though. Also, the 'j' = 'h' wasn't me. Credit where credit's due.
WONT HE EAT THEM!...
OH, wait... you meant your friend...
whew....
Bunch of stuff
I like Paul Gilbert's "Flying Dog" and "Burning Organ" albums. They're not particularly artistic, but they're kind of funny.

Out at the end of next month.
After Pinkerton = shit, and getting shittier each new release.
I can't stand the Green Album, every song is the same thing.
Maladroit, why don't more people like Maladroit? It's so good.
I bring this thread back from the dead for this awesome cover:

Watch the video to see the Hologram.
Did I miss something, or has nobody posted anything from GY!BE or EItS? I mean, really, everything either of them has put out except for All Lights... and arguably Those Who... is absolutely beautiful. I especially like The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place's art, the simplicity really works, like someone is writing it over and over trying to convince themselves. The insert that came with the CD of The Earth... was also great, I can't find a picture of it online, but it is a simple line drawing of a sailor sitting on the end of a pier staring out at the sea, saying "thank you."

They are both pretty ace.
So post them, you silly person! It takes me forever to upload one photo, let alone seven or eight of them. Or is it generally considered kosher to hotlink images from wikipedia, since if it is anyone other than Google, it is going to be a drop in the bucket of times that image is accessed?
