So I hope this hasn't already been covered in another thread under a different guise, but this thread is about shitty covers of good songs.
To get things off on the right (or, I suppose, wrong) foot, I submit to you, wise and mighty Internets, this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqff0RM4ok). It's the Jonas Brothers covering "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles.
-
Pretty much whenever Phish covers anything live. Especially things that are supposed to be vocally driven.
-

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
That's what I thought.
-
The Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the UK by Megadeath.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i1-j1IZEKw
Fuck you, Megadeath.
-
Oh yeah, the GnR cover of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.
-
Oh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuNdqs0HYWg) hai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhYO44LYCK8).
-
Pretty much whenever Phish covers anything live. Especially things that are supposed to be vocally driven.
Oh, god, their take on Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River" is fucking horrendous. They're like, Hey, let's take this awesome song, play it at half speed and suck every ounce of funkiness from it.

How about Velvet Revolver covering "Psycho Killer"?
-
Sorry for the double post, but this: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/green_day_announces_bonus_tracks.html (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/green_day_announces_bonus_tracks.html) has a rightful place in this thread and they're not even released yet.
Also, that Jonas Bros cover is AWFUL.

I lasted all of 8 seconds
-
This is the worst Beatles cover I've heard:
Katie Noonan - Black Bird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8Zr5NgRnNI)
It's even worse than the Sergio Mendes / Brasil 77 covers I've heard.
Oh, god, their take on Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River" is fucking horrendous. They're like, Hey, let's take this awesome song, play it at half speed and suck every ounce of funkiness from it.
Heh, Talking Heads' take on Al Green's Take Me To The River is a bit shit too. ;) Nah, it's OK, just loses the shit Byrne said inspired him to cover it.
Man, there are so many bad covers.
Led Zeppelin's When The Levee Breaks
Elvis's Hound Dog
Simply Red's If You Don't Know Me By Now
Phil Collins' You Can't Hurry Love
... I could put in millions of one-hit wonders who did shit pop covers. Cecilia, Break My Stride, Give It Up, etc.
-
Any cover the Clash did. Seriously, "Police and Thieves" is HORRENDOUS. Every time he goes "Police and thieves on the stree - eet" I wanna punch Joe Strummer VERY HARD in the mouth.
-

Ah, I'm an idiot. I guess I'll forgo slagging on Marilyn Manson's terrible cover of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love."
-
I actually like Social Distortion's cover of "Tainted Love".
-
How about this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91h6qUikXjA)
-
Fallout boy covers Micheal Jackson's Beat it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgmL2LeuhY4)
-
Listening to this is like watching Corey Feldman playing Jesus in Passion of The Christ. Who made this decision?
-
The Fallout cover is ok until he starts SINGING.
There was actually a thread earlier about how Avril Lavigne shouldn't do covers. This one's probably the worst.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfM1U74tMJw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfM1U74tMJw)
Related note: Paramore covering Foo Fighters:

(Btw noob question but how do you set up text for your links?

There's a couple really awful Sigur Ros covers out there, in particular the ones by We Are Scientists and, I think, Taking Back Sunday. One of many problems: the songs covered are in Icelandic. The vocalists of these bands do not know Icelandic. This is not an equation for success.

i think you're thinking of Thursday. i love Thursday, but they dropped the ball with that one.
i'm not even going to try and find a video of it, as none of you deserve that kind of abuse, but that shitty pile of monumental make-up-smeared shit-bins Aiden covered the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling." it was horrific, and not in the way the misfits would approve of...
-

Soft Cell's cover of Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love" is fucking shit.
Also, am I wrong in remembering "Take Me To The River" as being pretty slow in the first place? How the hell do you slow it down even further? Bad game Phish, bad game.

I suppose the We Are Scientists version would be substantially better if there was no singing, but it's not all bad.
-
Whisper girls.
What I mean is, these girls who sing in whispery, soprano voices with these gentle, happy feel-good songs. Generally, they take good songs, and take the energy right out of them. This pisses me off.
-
Like Tori Amos' Raining Blood?

Speaking of "Sweet Child of Mine", find the video of Slash playing and Fergie singing. Yes, that Fergie.
And Grandaddy's cover of "Revolution" came on shuffle on iTunes today. It's really not that good.
-
Oh God. The Smashing Pumpkins' take on Landslide was terrible.
-
Like Tori Amos' Raining Blood?
Man, that, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Thank You (Led Zep) ... has she ever done a good cover?
Much as I love Kate Bush, her version of Rocket Man is even worse than the original. Cod-reggae? Really?
-
My Generation - Hilary Duff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvC6jDrxT-U
-
I'd like to take this moment to mention the entire Kids Bop franchise, and that its an aural abortion and a crime against nature.
-
that shitty pile of monumental make-up-smeared shit-bins Aiden
If I kept a list of my favorite people on this forum, you would have just made it onto that list because of this quote.
On topic, the worst cover EVER in my opinion - in terms of poor quality, poor execution, and just plain should-never-have-been-done:
Limp Bizkit covering The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes"
-
hai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhYO44LYCK8).
Fuck you so hard for beating me to the punch.
-
Oh for fucks sake why do so many shit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxjdY8lS-UI) awful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3JpAQrlL8M) bands (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjHwkuGocj8) cover Waiting Room?
Oh yeah also there is this monstrosity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urezv-d82hE)
-

haven't clicked it but if it isn't crazy town covering "new noise" you fucked up, dovey

you win this round

The Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the UK by Megadeath.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i1-j1IZEKw
Fuck you, Megadeath.
What on earth are you talking about? Megadeth improved that song tenfold while parodying it.

haha, thanks!
oh, and if there's one thing worse than those chumps covering something, it's when a possibly-even-worse band cover them. ladies and gentlemen, presenting a bunch of welsh cack-wizards called The Blackout, covering Limp Bizkit's "My Generation." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmg3MiIuSn0) Apparently they've just signed to Epitaph records, so sadly we'll probably be hearing a lot more from them soon

QFT
-
how dare a band I don't like cover a band I like I can't ever unhear this entirely forgettable version of a classic song I love

Woah this is great it sounds exactly like the original
Seriously though when I was fourteen My Generation was a great song to get really mad to and I think it would be unfair if an entire generation of incompetently furious teenagers were denied the opportunity to get all worked up for no reason to so I am glad this apparently Welsh band has decided to fill that vacuum.
-
I mean, lets face it, nobody ever got hurt in a Limp Bizkit moshpit
-
if you wanted a limp bizkit song to get mad to, surely the best choice would be "break stuff"? asses being skinned raw with the proverbial chainsaw and all that?
to be fair, i still occasionally listen to LB's more laid back songs. "rearranged" isn't bad. i maintain they were a perfectly competent and decent band, but were dragged down by a terrible vocalist/lyricist and entirely pointless DJ.
also, i just stumbled across this: Scarlett Johansson covering Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfLtyJAASfc)
i'd question the point of ever covering a Jeff Buckley song anyway, as i don't think it could ever hope to be as good as the original. i do quite like the piano arrangement in that cover, but it's slowed down a little TOO much, and her vocals really don't fit at all.
-
bands (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjHwkuGocj8) cover Waiting Room?
Ska cover of Waiting Room? DICK YOU IN THE MOUTH, DOVEY
No one's clicked on my other link? A link containing a cover of "Stars" so bad that the other members of Hum think to themselves, "What have we done?"
-

Anyone who hopes for this when recording a cover of a song is a fuckwit, that is not really the point of the exercise.
PS Break Stuff was pretty good when I was twelve but as I matured and entered my teen years I yearned for a more mature nu-metal anthem of rebellion.

I guess "as good as the original" isn't the right way to put it - but in doing a cover, you'd aim for it to be as interesting as the original. And the amount of emotion and mystery in and around Buckley's music more of less makes that goal impossible.
-
Wait I just remembered Less Than Jake did a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender."
It was okay as far as I remember.
-

Fuck you, Megadeath.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended to be parody. Mustaine was too stoned at the time. He just didn't know all the words.
-
That one covers album by Metallica, oh boy was that a laugh.
-
One former coworker loved ABBA. One time I played an 80s mix at work with "Safety Dance" on it. He expressed at length how much he HATED Men Without Hats.
So next time I brought in a mix with their cover of "SOS" to torture him.
-
This might be a stretch, since it's actually a terrible cover of a terrible song, but it is actually quite an amazing example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjeMDvCdrtc) of how bad a band can be.
-
I've spent too much time on Fark to not know what that was before I even clicked. It's ear-rapingly awful, and I always watch it anyway.
-
I was wondering how long until somebody posted that.
-
a terrible song
What.
-
Eric Burdon. Doing ANYTHING. Christ.
Also: Ozzy Osbourne, doing Eric Burdon. Blehhhhhhhhhhh
-
Duran Duran covering Public Enemy? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k_BgzSDQNk)
Talk of covers albums reminded me of it - their effort, 'Thank You', is just disgusting... Lou Reed, Led Zep, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmIN9ulmy-E), Elvis Costello... Weird they didn't do something involving Chic, maybe the Chic boys were at their critical nadir.
I actually think the rock versions of Black Betty - Ram Jam first, then Spiderbait - are pretty shit too.
(Fuck, I wrote "critical Nadir")
-
a terrible song
What.
Face facts Khar.
-
California radio station 94.7 the wave. They play smooth jazz covers of pop music from early 2000's. Besides that, it's just plain souless smooth jazz. Unlistenable.
-
Duran Duran covering Public Enemy? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k_BgzSDQNk)
holy shit
a terrible song
What.
look man there's a reason gob used it as his theme song in arrested development (the song is a sonic punchline)
-
Man, y'all just can't take the sheer amount of awesome in that song, you ridicule it in defense.
-
WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER
-
the final countdown is a fucking CHOON. i've just found a youtube vid with lyrics and had a reet karaoke session. i even sang along to the keyboards. i am not ashamed!
-
What the hell are you saying? That song is god-awful. Is this ironic, because that would really be the only possible explanation.
-
i would NEVER like something ironically, and i think anyone who does is a fucking idiot and not worth anyone's time. seriously, i'm fucking sick of it.
i like that song because it's catchy, it's fun, and it's cheesy. you'd appreciate a fine painting in a different way than you'd appreciate a tasty sandwich. in the same way, i can like a cheesy pop song in a different way to how i might enjoy a more serious song. but here's the point - i still ACTUALLY LIKE IT. no fucking irony.
-
Celine Dion-You Shook Me All Night Long (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FONt47Z0KZg)
-
Guns N' Roses versions of Sympathy for the Devil and Live and Let Die are fucking brutal. Even Slash hated Sympathy for the Devil. This is too bad because other than those, I like Guns N' Roses.
*edit: Slash hated their version of Sympathy for the Devil. He had too much respect for Keith Richards' playing to think he could do it as well.
I'm not saying Slash isn't good (he's very good), but even he recognized that he was no Keith Richards. In his autobiography, he specifically refers to Richards' guitar work on that song as "untouchable".
/rant over
-
That one covers album by Metallica, oh boy was that a laugh.
I agree with this statement but I don't understand why you are posting it in the "Terrible Covers" thread, dude.
-
@The Joker -
I was reading one time where Slash was in the studio with Keith Richards while he (Keef) was recording, and Slash said that he heard a great solo that he could play on the song, and Richards turned to him and went, "Look, I like you kid, but don't push your luck."
-

uh "knocking on heaven's door"
-
I played GNR's Knockin' on Heaven's Door for my father, because he's TOTALLY OBSESSED with Bob Dylan. His only comment was, "Why does he sound like he's in pain?"
-
Two pages in and nobody has mentioned the abortion that is the Foo Fighters covering Darling Nikki?
Wow.
-
To quote a friend of mine on this:
"Hey, Foo Fighters are nothing to laugh at!
...maybe snicker."
-
Anyone seen that Simpsons episode with a cover of 'Can't Buy Me Love' in it? Utterly worthless cover, it sounds just like the original except not as good.
-
Hey! I kind of like the cover of "Darling Nikki" (but I've never heard the original). And speaking of TV shows covering Beatles songs, how about Scrubs covering "Eight Days A Week". Actually, i kind of like it, since it fits the episode.
-
My friend showed me that. I enjoyed it.
-
Have we done the R&B covers of classic rock corner yet?
The Braids - Bohemian Rhapsody
All Saints - Under The Bridge (While I think the Chilli Peppers suck more than All Saints, this is so SO misguided)
... hmm... that dried up more quickly than I expected. I guess at a stretch we could head off into the territory of that sorta downbeat / jazzy Radiohead covers album. Bilal covering High & Dry in a sort of lounge crooner style's actually quite good though. :-D
-
The Toy Dolls - The Final Countdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2Btg7lFlig)
I think it's good, your mileage may vary, you all probably think it sucks.
-
I like the Toy Dolls and wish I could give that a listen to and decide for myself.
