Title: So guys, you know how I'm on Albanian TV and shit?
Post by: Patrick on 12 May 2009, 19:40
Well, I finally found video. My battle with Labinot starts about 50 minutes into the video.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SHITTY INTER-WEBS OR COMPUTERS (http://www.tvklan.tv/emisioni.php?id=404#)

(my apologies for the shitty quality and for the commercials. This is the network's official site, they uploaded it, not me)
(also, if the site crashes it's because I have been linking basically everybody to this)
(also also, have fun trying to figure out what they're saying)
(also also also, take a look at some of the other singers and dancers, and see what kind of ridiculously talented and usually-attractive people I get to chill with every day)

EDIT: also holy shit your voice is fucking amazing

also ha ha you sang a Killers song on live TV and I'm going to make fun of you next time I see you in meatlife

also that Pepsi commercial after your segment is really funny

Good singin' there Patrick.  I find it amusing that Labi has a stronger stereotypical American singing accent than you do.

Also, I find it a pretty good showing because even though I don't like the song I think that the dude from the Killers has a really good voice and a lot of processing on it in that song, so it's a pretty tough gig.

Who the fuck is Patrik?

So you may or may not be aware that Albania is an impoverished and troubled nation, one lesser-known tragic side effect of which being that they agreed to sell the letter 'C' to the U.S.S.R. way back in the day and lease it back and a favorable rate. However, when the union fell, Kazakhstan curiously kept the rights to the Albanian use of the letter 'C', and since they have no interest in leasing it cheap in exchange for political agreeability, Albania has been unable to afford its use for some years now.

A high-ranking Kazakh official, mysteriously AWOL as of three days ago, was last spotted attempting to unload the letter on a group of Nigerian guerrilla warriors in exchange for several hundred decommissioned nuclear warheads.

Albanian sounds like 50% Italian, 20% French, 20% Russian, and 10% Elvish?  :?

I'm fluent in Russian and semi-fluent in Italian and this sounds about right.

Albanian is actually 100% different from any other language on the planet. It borrows a few words from Turkish, but never forgets to cite sources.

Also thanks for the voice compliments! I am glad somebody thinks so. I was less than completely satisfied with both performances (see night [nata] 2 for the first one), heh.

For those who have asked, the judges were just saying that they were pretty pleased with my singing. People were impressed that I am actually capable of showing something resembling a pulse onstage (I have a bad habit of hiding that shit during the rest of the week) and the judges SHIT themselves over my Albanian pronunciation. They said that my Albanian was better than Labinot's, but they also said his English was better than mine (THEY WOULD NOT KNOW). I was pleased, but too nervous to show it!

You know, considering that not too long ago Albania was giving North Korea a good run for dreariest, drabbest, most oppressive place on Earth, the fact that they now have a show as gaudy and fun as this gives me... HOPE.  :-D

Ok maybe I am doing it wrong but I just watched/skipped forward through chunks of the whole damn 90 minutes. Where exactly was Patrick?

Also what the hell is the premise of this show? Is it like two people trying to see who can do the act better and then they get judged on it?

I managed to miss him the first time I skipped through it was well. I ended up having to skip forward to 50 minutes in and just resisting the urge to skip. When I was skipping around all I ever saw was the other guy singing.

I have to admit that, being from the Southern US, I was a little anxious clicking on something that said TV Klan. Thankfully there were no white hoods. I was half afraid it was going to be a public access channel from Georgia.

They started the video off with a High School Musical song. So lame

Dude not only that, but this week they introduced 4 songs from HSM3 into our repertoire so that we can have a whole month that is HSM-themed. I wish they'd have picked something awesome like Les Miserables or something instead of that shitbucket musical, but what can you do.

Yelley I would love to be your little brother.

Katie, the premise of the show is that there are two teams. The two teams each send out a few people each week to battle against somebody sent by the other team (we don't actually choose who gets sent out, that is the producer's call). For the dancers, nobody gives a fuck. For the singers, so far it's been gender-segregated, but Labinot is thinking about quitting, so eventually I am going to get to battle one of the girls, which is going to be badass.

Anyway, whichever team has more wins each night, the members each take turns saying the name of a person to eliminate from the other team. My team has been winning pretty consistently (5 to 2, holy shit) but yeah, that can't possibly last for much longer.

Anyway, whichever team has more wins each night, the members each take turns saying the name of a person to eliminate from the other team.

Putting that decision in the hands of the opposing team seems kind of silly.  Don't they try to eliminate the people they think are the best singers, so that only the worst ones are left on the other side?  Maybe I'm missing something.

Well, whoever gets nominated goes through a two-step process by which they can be saved. If they rank higher than a certain spot on the voting placement list, they stay. If not, they go up against the collective opinions of the judges. If they pass that, they're safe. This happens up to three times, then they just kick off whoever is in last place.

This week they added another little fun aspect though: they're kicking off the last-place contestant as well as whoever the winning team nominates, and there's no chance for recovery from that. And since they go ahead and kick off that person before letting us nominate the second person, there's no chance of accidentally having our opinions coincide with the voting placement. There is now always going to be two people getting kicked off each week. After the first person is kicked off automatically, the normal elimination procedure follows.

Fucking terrifying.

Awesome job Patrick, btw. Their performance is at around 50 minutes into it again. Took me a while to find it. Also, maybe its just me not understanding the language, but the host for that show, she, doesn't seem very into it, or, I don't know their doesn't seem to be a whole lot of personality there. Her expressions and body language for the most part are almost static. I think the only reason its bothering me is because that combined with a language I will probably never speak makes that show really hard to watch.

I'm sorry Bawx (and everybody else!) I really wish I had a computer that wasn't a piece of shit so I could :(

Labinot and I are introduced at 47 minutes, and his song starts shortly after. Mine is immediately after his, at about 51.

Also, maybe its just me not understanding the language, but the host for that show, she, doesn't seem very into it, or, I don't know their doesn't seem to be a whole lot of personality there. Her expressions and body language for the most part are almost static.

Yeah Zana is about as interesting to watch as a brick wall. None of what she's saying is important anyway, the show is pretty self-explanatory. We sing, they critique us for what feels like 7 hours, the dancers dance, they have similar critiques, and at the end of it all, somebody gets booted off.

And hey, thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate them, man. Same goes for you, snalin.

I haven't worked out yet how to get Nero to make a small video with acceptable audio quality (I've never tried video editing before), so here are two files:

Audio only, OK sound* (3MB)
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?d1nvndnjity
Video with crap sound (15MB)
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?jmzn2qewmx1
* i.e. no worse than the orginal stream

I added the voting at the end so you hear his name lots of times...

I agree, she almost sounds like she's mocking the whole affair.

But I guess that's just tones in a language we'll never understand. Like how to many western people, even whispered sweet nothings in Japanese sound like death threats.

But I guess that's just tones in a language we'll never understand. Like how to many western people, even whispered sweet nothings in Japanese sound like death threats.

At the store I used to work at, we had a middle-aged woman from Italy as a cashier. One of the absolute sweetest people I've ever known who was always friendly and helpful. When I was a supervisor, I got more complaints from customers about her than any other employee. I have a very good ear for emotional tone and can control my own to the point where I've only had a small handful of outright blowups with customers over several years, so it didn't take me long to figure out the cause.

The normal speaking intonation of the cashier in English carried over from her Italian, and it mapped almost exactly to the pitch changes that an American uses to be sarcastic or dismissive. Once you've triggered the "I've been treated rudely!" switch in somebody, it's next to impossible to get them to unruffle their fur. I tried explaining this phenomenon to some of the customers but it never worked. In fact it happened once with a friend of mine, and afterward I explained the whole situation in detail, and at the end the reaction was STILL, "Yeah, but she was rude to me." Aaargh.

So I just gave up and told customers from then on the usual BS answer of "sorry about that, I'll have a talk with her," then deleted the incident from my mind.

That's probably part of what we're hearing in the hostess, intonations that map to negative connotations to our ear, especially when we don't understand the words to put it all in context.
