Title: I'm horny
Post by: Radical AC on 27 May 2009, 11:31
I played my trumpet today for the first time in over a year.  I was able to play the highs and lows with great sound.  My chops weren't great and I couldn't play great for very long, but that is okay for what I'm planning on doing with it now (interspersed playing in some of my music along the lines of what you hear with Okkervil River or Neutral Milk Hotel)  I think I might want to get a new trumpet soon.  I'm planning on making a few big musical purchases soon, and upgrading my Blessing trumpet would be nice too.  Anyone have any suggestions for a replacement?  I don't think I'm going to blow 10 grand on a Monette, but I hear Taylor (not the guitar company) makes some nice ones, though they are pricey too.  I've also been thinking about taking up the true/french horn, or maybe getting a flugelhorn.  The horn is a different beast altogether, I know, but I think it has the most beautiful tone out of the brass family.  And, I've seen a lot flugelhorns in contemporary indie music as of late.

Any other horn players out there?  I've been listening to Brasstronaut's EP and it is pretty inspiring for things I can do.  I also have a really old Trombone that was my grandfathers I've been wanting to get better at.  I'm beginning to lament that I've never been in a ska band.

I played the trombone from the time I was in 4th grade on...haven't picked it up in a while, but I still do every now and again. I was also in a ska-ish band (http://www.myspace.com/somethinginitself) (click for linkage!), it was much fun. I know very little about makers of trumpets, but in the trombone world, I always lusted after a nice Bach F-attachment horn, damn things are aspensive though.

My first thought was Nirvana, seeing the title, to be honest.

I used to play on a really neat looking raw brass Bach Strad. I loved that horn to death. It got stoled...

How old are you? What kind of mouthpiece are you playing on?

Early 20's, and I still have my original mouth piece that came with the Blessing.  It's pretty beat up at this point though, I'll probably get one or more extras when I pick up a new trumpet.

Well, it's ok. I prefer playing a normal Bb trumpet though. Even though mine isn't very good  :| got no moneys for a new one though.

Brass is something of my 'thing', what are you looking to spend on your new horn? Dollar amounts help more, as one man's "not too much" is another man's "holy shit you rich".

I bought a Stomvi (http://www.stomvi.com/en-instrumentos-profesional-stomvi.htm) about half a year ago. I think they're a pretty newish company, I definitely hadn't heard of them, anyway.

I was looking for something basically a step up from the student trumpet I learned on, but not a crazy expensive pro horn. At any rate, I just went to the brass shop and played a bunch of stuff. The stomvi had as good a sound or better than some of the more expensive horns, and anything that actually did sound better was out of my price range at the time.

Having played it for a while and used it in recording for two albums, I can honestly say I love the tone, but it does have a greater tendency towards sticky valves than I'd like.

You should definitely consider looking at a few different mouthpieces. Finding one that you're better suited to can make a big difference, I think.

Basically I'd go to a shop and play some stuff, try a few mouthpieces, and find something in your price range that you like. A bunch of shops do second-hand sales as well, and a second-hand horn is definitely worth looking at as an option. Most horns are pretty robust so besides checking out the valves there aren't too many things that can go wrong.

Don't be too worried about spending a fair bit of dosh, either. Considering the thing will last you your whole life, it's probably better to get something you're happy with than getting stuck with a cheaper horn.

This is all real good advice. The mouthpiece thing is huge. I played on the wrong kind for years before someone helped me out, and my skills increased incredibly in just a few weeks after that. It was kind of amazing.

Try things out. Not only will it help you get better, but it's also kind of fun!

I'm all for sitting in a music shop and trying their stuff.  I do that all the time anyhow.  I don't like saying money isn't an option, because it always is, but I'm willing to save up for a while if it means getting the right instrument.  I'm leaning towards getting a heavier trumpet with a full/dark sound right now.

Oh god, I'm about the same age as you are and I up until a month ago I had the same mouthpiece that I got with my trumpet when I was in like 4th grade. I played it for the first time in years and felt this odd tingling sensation in my lips and then I realized that MY MOUTHPIECE WAS COVERED IN MOLD.

Oh yuk!  I'm glad I keep my instruments in dry areas, that could have been me!

I'm also boning up on my trombone for a new ska/punk band I've been asked to be in. (Just when I started lamenting not being in one, BAM, falls in my lap)  I have my grandfathers old Conn from the 40's or 50's, and it is WAY nicer than most brass instruments I've every played.

You're horny?  Sweet, I've got wood (wind)!

Yeah, I have a clarinet.  It gets played about once a year.

I'm glad we're starting a ska band. Seems like a lot of people (like you) who played instruments grow up and regret that they never tried to make a band.

We performed this a few weeks ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXWjidgC_Jw

It was a last minute thing, so we weren't great, but the croud loved it so much that we're going to keep it up!
