Title: Is Pintsize Obsolete?
Post by: mustang6172 on 10 Jun 2009, 21:49
In the QC verse Pintsize is at least 2 years old.  Which I believe is about 64 in computer years.

Would Marten replace him, or is there too much emotional attachment?

Have you heard of the word upgrade?

Wasn't the government chassis already an upgrade?

Pintsize was introduced as a pretty basic model, and entry-level equipment is often not readily upgradable.

Yes to emotional attachment -- remember Marten's reaction when the government wanted to erase Pintsize?

Great story arc idea: Pintsize gets an OS upgrade

But what would the upgrade be?

And Pintsize could be obsolete. But give him that navel laser back, and oh he'll be far from obsolete, hell yes.

There could be a storyline wherein to use a new device on Pintsize, he has to upgrade to Windows Vista for driver compatibility. This gives him pretty serious bipolar disorder and he starts an atonal neo-no-wave band.

Or installs Windows 7, where he suddenly starts to identify with MAC OS X

As Marigold is apparently fairly computer-literate, I'd estimate that she could manage to upgrade Pintsize without him needing a new chassis. (Assuming she becomes a recurring character) She seems like the type who could build their own computer pretty easily.

For what its worth, Pintsize might be able to upgrade himself. That's basically what he was trying to do when he crashed. If he ever gets his hands on a reliable source of instruction, the world may very well be doomed.

yeah but performing hardware upgrades on a computer that is live is never a good idea.  Always best to turn it off and remove the plug (or for pint size whatever battery or power supply he has)  Granted we have seen him in peices before.  Somehow the whole missing head instructing the live decapitated body where to find his head cmes to mind.

Dora could probably do it too, for that matter. Note how she removed the laser.

Come to think of it, Dora has fantasized about upgrading Pintsize (#145).
Title: Re: Is Pintsize Obsolete?

I'm fairly sure Pintsize is upgradable. What with it having happened a few times with varying degrees of success.

First he got a new chassis which presumably counts as hardware when talking about AntrhoPCs, given the elbows and laser things, respectively.

Then with the laser incident Dora commented on modding him.

Hanners gave him more RAM. It made him hyperactive, but essentially it worked as an upgrade.

And finally you could just back him up and the reload the personality into a complete new chassis. Such as Boyfriend 2.0.

if you guys do remember. he did get a ram upgrade for 1 or 2 comics but then it had to be taken out because pintsize went basicly crazy

So, #1017, Hanners put boyfriend 2.0 in the closet... should we be surprised that Pintsize hasn't already uploaded himself into it and gone out to wreak havoc? What would he do exactly? Go to a psycho ward and convince them the alien robot invasion is upon us?

I'm pretty sure that the government has technology way better than the public's.  Since Pintsize has government chassis, he's probably cutting edge as of right now.

Remember, the government issue hardware was bought (accidentally; Marten thought he was buying standard hardware) because Pintsize ruined his old hardware with cake. (#58 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=58)) He says the cake was "worth the massive motherboard damage" so he probably needed all new hardware. Considering that, he probably isn't too outdated yet; remember the last time he threw a little robot party, most of them looked just like him but in different colors. I think the Linux AnthroPC is more likely ot be old hardware, because its chassis is more square and it has to have a neckbeard/heatsink.

Of course if they use a standard form factor (equivalent to real-world ATX), all this speculation goes out the window.

Goddammit now I feel like one of those nerds who tries to piece together how the ships from Battlestar Galactica and all their subsystems work I HOPE YOU"RE HAPPY > : C

Pintsize must be current enough to still receive security updates, since he's running Windows but usually stays up anyway.

If he was to be eventually 'upgraded', I would totally pay to see a Linux Pintsize.

God, what would the results be?

No porn except that with a Creative Commons license.

Picking fights with the Windows AnthroPCs as well as the Apple ones (#122).

Spending all his time on Slashdot.

Trying to "upgrade" all the other AnthroPCs.

Flame wars with PT-410X about which distro to run.

Wouldn't that wipe his personality, though?

Pintsize hijacking boyfriend 2.0 and getting Penelope pregnant fits perfectly with my Penelope/Will get pregnant story line...see the story is there it just needs to be written people!

And I agree with whoever said that all you would need to do is save Pintsize to another PC and he would always exist. heck you coul dmake a "backup" every few days/weeks so if Pintsize goes BSOD you just activate back-up Pinstsize. You could punish him by resurrecting him in a non-anthro PC. Oooo he'd hate that!

Am I the only one who thought OP was referring to the nature of his character? I'm not too fond of the little dude myself and I actually kind of groan when I see him in a strip. Only the recent ones, though, where he's no longer mischievous but slightly innocent, just an annoying little bastard.

Yes, you are the only one. Since the OP specifically mentioned him as a computer and 'computer years'.

Anyway, with his current state, I'd definitely say he needs some new hardware, thus prolonging his life.

Its also worth noting the early discussions he had with Marten and Faye about being 'effectively immortal'.

I meant obsolete in terms of technology relative to the other technology presented in the comic.

And after what Faye did, I think it's time for a new chassis.

Now that Faye has horribly mangled pintsize, do you guys think he'll get a new chassis? After all, his basic shape hasn't changed since the comic started, maybe Jeph wants to doom the world and give him thumbs. Now seems like the time.

That would be a disorienting change, but it's fun to speculate about. We could guess, even if we didn't know, what an Apple AnthroPC would look like. What should a Windows AnthroPC look like?
