Title: High-tempo driving mix
Post by: skydivingninja on 13 Jun 2009, 18:04
Hey all,

I'm making a high-tempo/energy driving playlist.  Fitting it on a CD, and it'll be called "Beware of Cops," since these are songs you get caught up in while driving until you realize you're going 20 over the speed limit.  So far I have:

Bat Out of Hell-Meat Loaf
Acid Rain-Liquid Tension Experiment
Wasted Years-Iron Maiden
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here-Porcupine Tree
Don't Stop Me Now-Queen

Songs I'm considering:
Meduzz-Infected Mushroom
Smokin'-Boston
Highway Star-Deep Purple
Gravemakers and Gunslingers-Coheed & Cambria
Red Barchetta-Cover by James LaBrie & Steve Morse
The Mob Rules-Black Sabbath

I have a bunch of rock/metal stuff on here already, which I love, but I've just been asking around through facebook statuses and now, this forum to see if we can get into other genres/bands outside of my normal rock/metal/prog leanings.  Alright, hit me!

Anything by DragonForce

Thought about that, but I already have two monster songs (Bat and Arriving Somewhere, 9 and 12 mins) and I don't want to devote 7-9 minutes for Dragonforce, though I have considered Strike of the Ninja, their shortest song, which everyone knows is the greatest Dragonforce, nay, the greatest power metal song ever.

How about The White Rabbits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eizro0zJpQ)

Fort Nightly is probably their fastest album

Also  Percussion Gun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IClBpch9vmM)

Interested in that kinda music?

Thanks for the replies so far, but for stuff like Cannibal Corpse, I forgot to make it clear I'm looking for GOOD music that doesn't sound like vomiting.

@Yayniall: How the hell did I forget one of the most rockin' videogame soundtracks ever???  Hopefully it can find a home.
@Squawk: Holy Fuck is pretty good.  The Pulse is definitely gonna have to find a way onto this, and I'm gonna have to invest in an album/EP.
@Be My Head: Some thrash for me is okay, but Punk hasn't interested me that much ever.  They're just two genres that have a few good songs apiece but the rest I can just ignore.

Thanks again!

Roadrunner - The Modern Lovers

On repeat for seventy minutes.

I'm struggling to think which track from 69 Love Songs would go on this mix. As we all know, every mixtape has to include a song from 69 Love Songs. It's the Law.

As Inlander said, that is the only song you need. Maybe Sister Ray as well.

Kyuss and Metallica's self titled have been my driving mix for a long time. Also, Slayer's debut. I alternate them with Ulver's Nattens Madrical occaisonally if I'm in a bad mood/feel like annoying the car next to me (I've got a car with a removable roof, see).
Title: Re: High-tempo driving mix
Post by: Inlander on 16 Jun 2009, 05:49
Actually what you need is a cassette. On one side, as previously discussed, will be "Road Runner" on repeat. On the other side will be just a shitload of bluegrass.

Oh, and somewhere on the cassette you'd have to have "The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side" from 69 Love Songs, because it's about driving and because you don't want to get pulled over by the mixtape police for not obeying the Law.

1. Roll down windows.
2. Turn radio to 25.
3. Play this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMBNNFObSM0).
4. Get arrested.

Surely this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovwv50kB6WU) would be more appropriate? (Also a better song).

Right, looking at the songs in your first post, and positing off in a variety of directions, only things I can find on youtube:

Star One - Set Your Controls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrys1i2h2-U)
Star One - Hawkwind Medley (feat. Dave Brock) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbDLOvBtrLk&feature=related)
Wuthering Heights - Land of Olden Glory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO4aY8Rxhz4)
Judas Priest - Hell Patrol (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPB8-x11TXo)
Judas Priest - All Guns Blazing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVL0bcdJIew)
Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm4X9yElG9Y)
KMFDM - Son of a Gun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz0TuTN6h6k)
KMFDM - A Drug Against War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4-bUYU3BH8&feature=fvw)
Nightingale - Losing Myself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p81HgSJ3luM&feature=related)
Orange Goblin - Scorpionica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlGW6SPKDVo)
Arch Enemy - Angelclaw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX9pLsnUGS8)

That CD needs a little Trash-Metal.

What about a little Megadeth, Sodom, Kreator.... or heck, why not

W.A.S.P. - I Wanna Be Somebody ...

Saxon is good too. Motörhead, Manowar...

And if you want to know what already earned me a speeding ticket - it was Iron Maiden. Run to the Hills.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZlDZPYzfm4

Guess, my next one will be either due to Drowning Pool - Bodies (Let The Bodies Hit The Floor) or Disturbed - Land of Confusion (Genesis Cover).

Nobody with a good car needs to be justified.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the Redline/Whiteline version on youtube. That is my favourite version, as it includes the extended intro and the absolutely indispensable "B-B-B-BURNOUT....................Let's HIT the FUCKING road!" bit.

Other great songs not on youtube included all the Orange Goblin songs I actually wanted, mainly Magic Carpet and Quincy the Pig Boy.

"He's heading out on Highway 666
He killed his mother 'cos she would not suck his dick..."

Yes.

Don't actually know most of those songs, but those three at least belong on there.

I've found that heavier stuff actually is less likely to be good driving music for some reason. I guess the type of driving music depends, some music is good toe-tapping (assuming you are driving an automatic, otherwise that can be hazardous to your health), steering wheel drumming, exciting driving music, and some is for when you have miles of empty roads in your headlights, nowhere to go, nothing to do, and two pots of coffee in your belly. Kyuss and s/t-era Clutch are good examples of the latter kind of driving music, but not the first kind. At least Sky Valley Kyuss, whichever record it was that had Hurricane on it might be different.

Then there is the rainy/snowy driving music, and if you don't have The Mantle or Ashes Against the Grain as an option for that, you are doing it wrong.

Wow, surprised to see this thread still up...I just might have to make a playlist of all the songs The Joker suggested, shuffle it and see what happens since I have most of them anyway.  I'm slowly getting around to checking out all the other stuff, like this 69 Love Songs thats supposed to be on every mix ever.  I thought that rule was for Queen II?  Anyways, I have this right now for one disc, though I might replace some songs with the songs you guys have recommended if I like 'em enough.  Not the Star One stuff though.  I can't stand Arjen/Ayreon 90% of the time unless its The Human Equation.  Thanks!

The Pulse-Holy Fuck
Wasted Years-Iron Maiden
The Mob Rules-Black Sabbath (was originally Trashed, but I already had Gillian on a track)
Acid Rain-Liquid Tension Experiment
Highway Star-Deep Purple
Smokin'-Boston (will probably be replaced.  Organ solo not the best for driving)
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here-Porcupine Tree
Don't Stop Me Now-Queen
Red Barchetta-James LaBrie/Steve Morse/Billy Sheehan/Mike Portnoy (Rush cover)
Big Blue-Retro Remix Revue (F-Zero music!)
Gravemakers & Gunslingers-Coheed & Cambria
Bat Out of Hell-Meat Loaf

Damn! I was going to say Sir Lord Baltimore & Fu Manchu...BEATEN!

I would also like to throw into the ring, some soundtracks:

*The song from Bevely Hills Cop when he first drives into Beverly Hills, it makes whatever you are doing feel like an awesome party!
(An hour looking for parking spots with my boyfriend proved this)
Infact:
* Axel F.
* The theme from Commando
* Anything from the Robocop soundtrack.
* Some Danny Elfman for a Tim Burton film (esp. Opening theme from Beetlejuice) if you are somewhere rural in the dark. Creepy.
* Big Audio Dynamite - B.A.D. (it's the song the garage attendents have on when they steal the ferrari in Ferris Bueller, but you knew that.)
*

Maybe not good for a muscle car racing along, but good for fun road trips!

Or maybe:
Ween - My Own Bare Hands. (I just like this song at the moment)
Rocket From The Crypt - On A Rope
Parts & Labour - A Great Divide (Happy & Rockin')

I have already started making a mix with everyone elses suggestions, I like this game!
