I've heard some terrific things about his series "Book of the New Sun" but I'm still not sure if I should read it yet. I'm a big fan of the genre, and the concepts seem interesting, but no where in town sells it. so I'm gonna have to order it, and that requires a bit more vouching.
so oh mightiest and greatest of forums is it worth the read?

Read it. I have a real love-hate relationship with Gene Wolfe's stuff, but he's definitely worth checking out. Just keep in mind that he plays tough but fair; he doesn't yank deus ex machinas out of his ass without at least throwing in some form of foreshadowing or giving you reason to second guess things but that doesn't mean he won't throw you for a loop once in a while if you're complacent enough to let the characters do all the thinking for you. To quote the man directly: "My definition of good literature is that which can be read by an educated reader, and reread with increased pleasure."
Basically, take Philip K. Dick, sober him up and make him willfully treacherous and you'll have an idea of what you're getting into.

If you look hard enough you should be able to get a copy from either a second hand store or in some sort of "SF/Fantasy classics" collection for cheap. I got a copy that way, and I enjoyed the story thoroughly.

I have both of the volumes in the SF Masterworks collection which collects all four books, which I recommend just for convienance sake. But yes! Buy them. I love Wolfe's work so this is an admitedly biased opinion.
Borgesian Sci Fi, where can you go wrong?
