Title: Spending Money
Post by: tinysmidgen on 11 Jul 2009, 16:02
Had this idea for a thread while at work today. A customer was buying some concrete for a sidewalk, and decided to buy some suntan lotion so that they wouldn't get burnt while pouring and mixing the concrete. (They told me that's what they were buying it for, with the most serious of expressions and voice). Upon hearing this, I looked outside, to the pouring rain, and asked; "Oh? Do you live out of town then?" Because seriously, who pours concrete in rain, and is worried about burning in the sun on a raining day. They respond, "Nope, just down the street actually." Dumfounded, I left it at that, and loaded their concrete for them (twenty eighty pound bags..woot)....Anyways, what I'm getting at, if you work in retail, what's the most ridiculous thing people have spent money on, that you've seen. Or, what is the most ridiculous thing you've spent money on?

i bought a $5 cellulite massager a few days ago because it was the last one and also 75% off and no matter how healthy and physically fit i try to be my butt is always a little bit cellulite-y so i figured i'd give it a shot. i have only used it once since then because wow there is very little that destroys your self esteem and dignity more than getting your butt naked and then rubbing lotion on your butt and then rubbing a bumpy piece of rubber on your naked slimy butt for what feels like hours and hours and all you can think as you're doing it is "i hope this makes my butt nice to look at, i mean less gross to look at, i mean DAMN IT why did i actually buy this stupid thing"

as you have all probably figured out by this point, no i have no problems sharing my various low points as a human being on these forums anymore

I know somebody who spent $600 on a giant tribal drum, played it all night, and then took it back the next day because 'it didn't sound the same', and traded it for a gong and some candles.

I can look left, right, forward, slightly down and slightly to the left or right and see things that I probably shouldn't have spent money on. Those would be miniatures. I mean, I've got thousands of dollars worth of unpainted miniatures. I would say that was a pretty foolish thing of me to do, purchase all of these things without the intent to paint them all. Well, that's a lie, there is intent to paint, but there's just so much of it.

Quote of the century:

I have a few things I wish I hadn't spent money on... personal trainer, guitar, skateboard, to name a few. I think the stupidest thing I bought, by far, was my senior prom tux. I didn't want to rent a used tux so I bought it, and then immediately gained enough weight to never wear it again.

i have only used it once since then

tania, i'll take it.  i have no shame.

i judge people really hard when they buy things from the store i work at.  as much as i love our clothes, they are very bad quality and severely overpriced.  as in, to the point that even with my 40% discount i think twice about buying things.  i have people come through with like 2 shirts and i'll ring them up and say "that will be $120 please" and as i say it i stare at them with hate in my eyes because i wish i had so much money i could throw over $100 away on a couple of shirts made for 12 cents each in sweat shops in third world countries.

I bought a varsity jacket in highschool. Not only are varsity jackets just generally a huge waste of money (they cost like a million dollars and they look stupid) I didn't even stay at that school long enough to ever wear the jacket. This was in Egypt, and the next year I moved back to the US.

We did a tequila shot promotion at work a while ago, £5 for 5 shots and you get a free glittery cowboy hat. Some guy offered me £20 for a hat, even after I told him you can get them with the 5 shots or just on their own for £5. In retrospect, I should have asked my manager if I could have a £15 tip.

vaguely relevant tangent: At a Starbucks today I asked if Starbucks has Italian sodas.  I mean, most coffee shops do and I'm rarely at Starbucks so I don't know.  Fast food sorta places often find it odd when you don't already know what's on their menu, but these guys didn't know either; that Starbucks didn't have Italian sodas, but it's a small one inside a Target so maybe normal ones do.

I bought Age of Conan. Not the best purchase.

On the other hand, they just offered me a not-binding two week free membership to try out all the new and awesome stuff they had added since I quit after a week. I'll probably try it out, but I still wish I had spent those money on something else.

I have spent huge amounts of money lately, but I'm feeling ok about it because Student Finance finally got themselves sorted (by which I mean I have had three letters from them since June 23rd, two of which are dated a day apart) and I'm now going to get the amount of funding I'm actually entitled to, not the £2000 less they initially offered. So I'm not going to be penniless at uni! Just very in debt afterwards.

I think the most amusing thing anyone has bought from me at work was a dozen bottles of mouthwash and a dozen bottles of whiskey. I enquired about it (jokingly suggesting they didn't try mixing the two) and they told me very gravely that they were shopping for an elderly relative and only came once a month. At the time I accepted that as a rational explanation but thinking about it, this elderly relative must use three bottles of mouthwash and three bottles of whiskey every week. That's a bottle every two days! That is a lot of mouthwash! And very probably an alcoholic relative!

Recently I've been spending large amounts of money in several bursts, but mostly it's for holidays and stuff which I always knew would be expensive. The day-to-day expenses add up; things like food when I'm not hungry, just bored, or books that I could perfectly well have got out of the library and returned for free. I didn't spend anything before I got a job, and now I spend masses all the time.

Seriously? I could have sworn I saw some new factory ammo for it. Even if you could just jump on a few hundred rounds, you could reload it for a while and save the pain of forming the brass. Wait, here we go. Prvi Partizan makes it. $10 for a box of 20, $247 for 500. Cheaper than .308, these days.

And that had better be an original, class III version you are talking about, not a reproduction. Hell, if you get that, I'm making an excuse to go to Idaho.

How much did you get that AR for, anyways? I thought they were normally upwards of 1k, even before Obamania.

I'm always too much of a stingy bastard to be able to think of anything I've wasted a lot of money on.

Depends on the STD. And also on whether or not you give a damn about others' health and well-being or care about spreading it around, I guess.

But seriously, I know what you mean. I had a scare once and didn't want anyone to touch me because I felt so gross. I wouldn't want to be screwing anyone infected with something, especially if they are dick enough not to say anything about it.
Title: Re: Spending Money
Post by: tania on 15 Jul 2009, 10:05
i guess with a lot of people the implication is that someone with an std is lying about it and sleeping around, but sometimes people are just open about having one, or in couples where they both have the same one and so they stay monogamous. i had a friend who got chlamydia once from her boyfriend and at first it was all "aww gross the stigma" but that pretty quickly lead to just "oh okay well with antibiotics this will go away pretty easily so that's cool" followed by "oh okay i guess you just had it all this time from a previous girlfriend and i didn't know about it and you're not cheating (chlamydia can stay dormant for a really long time with no symptoms), no big deal!" there are dating sites for people who are hiv positive, too, and i'm sure there are also some available for people with other incurable stds.

The semi-auto repro is $3,000. Pretty affordable.

I picked up my AR in the summer of 2008 for ~$600. 120 for the lower in town and ~480 for a kit, and I built it myself on my kitchen table. It's an m4gery style, if I got a second chance, I'd build a full size HBAR. (It doesn't have any rails though. fuck THAT noise.)

Nice find, I would have thought prices would already be getting higher by then. I would be afraid I would screw it up, making it from a kit. Maybe eventually I would get confident enough, but definitely not on my first one. High five on the lack of rails. I can see a rail for a scope, and maybe one for a vert grip, but beyond that, give me normal handguards. I don't need 20 square feet of rails.

On the topic of firearms I happen to be a fan of pistols over rifles. Don't get me wrong a nice K-98 Mauser would be an excellent sporting rifle, but my dream piece is a AMT .44 caliber Auto-magnum. It has a 8 round clip capacity and 9 if you pre-load it. It is the worlds only semi-automatic .44 cal magnum ever made. Runs about 10-15k us dollars though. If I had the money I would most assuredly waste it. Biggest issue with is is that you have to make your own ammunition. Most .44 cal rounds are rimmed so you can use them in revolvers, however that rim would jam a semi-auto pistol, so as you can imagine it gets to be a bit more expensive once you take ammunition into account as well.

Sometimes at work foreign cards will automatically go onto cashback and enter amounts (I'm guessing because it has extra/different information on the metallic strip maybe). It's come up with like £800,000 before.

When I was on holiday I spend €70 for trudging down a canyon river and €100 for a paragliding flight. I hoped the flying itself had been more exciting. If there was one remarkable thing about it, it was the view.

It doesn't top the expenses you guys make, though. Like everyone, if I had more money to spend, more of it would probably have been wasted.
