Title: Build My Netflix Queue
Post by: Professor Snuggles on 16 Jul 2009, 14:28
I just started an account. I like good movies, I am trying to watch more classics, I'm into Westerns, good Sc-Fi, comically bad movies, and quality independent films.

Start of my list is 7 samurai, Oliver! Casablanca, and Dr. Strangelove.

What else am I throwin on this, doggies.

Charlie Chaplin.

Pretty much any Charlie Chaplin.

Amelie
The Long Kiss Goodnight (not as wimpy as it sounds)
Pi
Primer (this one is important; it's an independent movie about two friends who create a time machine, shenanigans ensue.)
28 Days/Weeks Later
Six-String Samurai

these are just some of my favorites. sort of a random assortment.

I think you would probably really like Chinatown, if you haven't already seen it.

Brick (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/) is also highly recommended.

Perhaps look into getting some John Cassevetes films as well?

I just saw Opening Night! It's super good! Like, totally phenomenal, actually.  I've also been meaning to see Shadows for a while, but never gotten around to it.

The 400 Blows
Bande à part
Cléo from 5 to 7

You forgot 'L'année dernière à Marienbad' (Also, Le Samourai)
It is the best one.  Written by Alain Robbe-Grillet, a mind blowing French author.

My favourite Cassavetes is 'A Woman Under The Influence' but that is a really incredibly difficult movie to watch.

I second Charlie Chaplin.

Then maybe get some Jim Jarmusch films?  'Down By Law' is my favourite, but they are all really wonderful.

People in another thread have been shitting on 'Videodrome' for some reason.  But that is a bizarre, scary, and wonderful film.  Plus Debbie Harry is in it and is gorgeous (and naked).

And now, just a list:

Badlands, Once Upon A Time in the West,  Man On Wire, Rocco e i suoi fratelli (My favourite movie, maybe?), Muholland Drive.

Brick (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393109/) is also highly recommended.

I second this.

Some classics:

Grand Illusion
Rashomon
Knife in the Water
Wild Strawberries
The Seventh Seal
Cinema Paradiso

And some more modern, but no less excellent films:

American Beauty
Fargo
The Straight Story
Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father*
The Battle of Algiers

*Be forewarned - Dear Zachary is a phenomenal tour de force, but it reduced my entire film study class to blubbering babies. It fucking destroyed everyone at every film festival it went to (emotionally). Hell, I was torn asunder by it. Here is the site for a list of its commendations: http://dearzachary.com/

Of all the movies on this list, it's the one that I recommend most to everyone on this forum. Good lord.

Comically bad movies, you say?

Snakes On A Train.
Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter.

These two are the ultimate in bad movies.

I love Netflix because of its Instant Play Queue! Being able to stream Netflix off my blu-ray player is effing amazing (and works wonders for my ADD; I hate waiting for Netflix dvds to arrive).

If that is possible for you, I would add these to my Instant Queue if I were you:

1) Dead like Me (all seasons)
2) Henry Poole is Here
3) The Diving Bell and Butterfly
4) Terminator 2: Judgment Day
5) Quantum Leap
6) Doctor Who
7) Zack Galifianakis: Live

And as for regular DVD releases... here's currently what's in my queue:

1) Push
2) The Wrestler
3) Tokyo
4) Son of Rambow
5) Clerks
6) Role Models

Bad movies wise... if you can find these, add them!

1) Machine Girl
2) Weird Science
3) Hell Comes to Frogtown
4) Anything that's MST3K
5) Lifeforce

Have fun!!!!!!!
