Fox is planning on recasting the newly-renewed Futurama: http://www.forcesofgeek.com/2009/07/is-fox-planning-to-recast-futurama.html
-
Typical. Fox strikes again. :-( They know it will be popular, and they still try and cut corners.
-
No way. I'm going with hoax.
-
Just hearing the idea made me sad. Something like this is like changing some of my childhood memories by replacing my closest friends.
-
/wrists
-
having spent the last couple of days watching the Futurama dvds my roomate just bought, i must say that this better not be true.
there will probably not be any consequences but man will i be unhappy about it.
-
I remember when the Pokemon voices got changed, that was weird.
-
why are you trying to hurt me like this
-
I refuse to live in a world that recasts Futurama.
-
We're talking about the network that cancelled Firefly.
-
One less show I have to be excited for.
-
We're talking about the network that cancelled Firefly.
No, we're actually not.
Because Futurama isn't on Fox anymore.
It's on Comedy Central.
-
Actually, we are. Comedy Central owns exclusive cable distribution rights, but the show is still produced by 30th Century Fox, which is a joke name for 20th Television, which is itself a subsidiary of Fox Broadcasting Company.
In short, Fox is stupid, they let the show go out of syndication in the first place and now they're trying to hammer the nails in the coffin.
-
Variety's reported on it (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006123.html?categoryid=14&cs=1&nid=2562), so it seems unlikely to be bullshit. As the article notes a similar conflict occurred with the Simpsons many moons ago, but those actors brought a much better hand to the table, I wager.
-
this news makes me feel very

I HATE CROW'S NEW VOICE!
Wait, what?
Oh yeah, this is Fox being stupid again. What makes this project viable is the DVD sales, and this is something they (and the talent's agents) can easily project from previous seasons. With new voices, it will just be a disaster.
-
Simply outrageous.
Imagine: not a single authentic "WOOBWOOBWOOBWOOBWOOB", "HaiiiiYA!" or "WERNSTROM!" in the whole season.
Unbelievable.. :-(
-
I'm going to go with the popular belief that this is Fox trying to get salary demands down. While I know Fox is stupid, I'd like to think they have enough common sense to know that replacing the principle cast of a show whose success is based entirely on a cult following is a death sentence for said show.
-
(Fry's dog picture)
FIGHT YOU SO HARD!!!! I just got rid of all the allergens in my house, now it's all dusty again in here...stupid something in my eye...
-
if its any consolation, in one of the 4 recent movies when fry goes back in time, he hangs out with Seymour.
sorta related story. Back in college 3 years ago, I let my girlfriend pick an episode of Futurama to watch because she had never seen the show. She was looking through the titles and picked Jurassic Bark because she likes dinosaurs. After the episode ended she looked at me as said "WTF is this? That had to be the saddest cartoon i've ever seen." I had to show her some funny ones after that because she was pretty upset.
-
That movie no longer makes that scene sad to me
-
If Fox are stupid enough to try and recast a show with a huge ensemble cast that was mostly voiced by three dudes, they can go fuck themselves in the hole they've dug.
-
HEY KIDS! Try this fun experiment at home!
1) Furrow one eyebrow and raise the other one in an incredulous way!
2) Using the muscles in your face, pull both corners of your mouth downwards!
3) Draw your lower lip back and out, extending the bottom of your mouth!
Congratulations! You are making the face I made when I read this completely ridiculous piece of news about idiots doing idiot things that anyone remotely interested thinks are dumb as heck
-
i am so furious.
in fact i am making the face jc just described and it is making me feel more adequately furious.

I am not an ugly person but my god I can be when I put my mind to it
-
You can't replace John DiMaggio
-
Honestly, I was mulling this over, and if it came down to the choice between axing John, or Billy, I would probably watch one episode of Futurama without John, but if Billy West wasn't involved I wouldn't even give them that.
Bear in mind I would watch it extremely disapprovingly
-
Yeah, as much as I love John's work, there is no Futurama without Billy West. He plays pretty much every good character aside from Bender.
-
I'd even argue Maurice LaMarche is more invaluable to the overall fabric of the cast to be honest, maybe even Tress as well?
I mean don't get me wrong, John plays the best character, straight up, but Futurama is arguably the best ensemble animated comedy ever written and cutting any other major voice actor from the cast would decimate the character potential of the show.
-
The more I think about this, the more I feel like it's a publicity stunt to get the fans riled up.
But maybe I've just gotten way too cynical.

Oh, and if anyone's going to SDCC, there's a Futurama panel with Matt & David (et. al.).
I'll be in the Angry Dome.

Yeah I saw that TV spot during scrubs a few days ago and pooped myself with excitement
-
to shreds you say?
-
People still watch Scrubs?
-
As long as the new episodes aren't as fan-service oriented as the movies were (which was fun, but it could sure get old if they carried it on much longer) I will be on board for anything they serve up.
On secon thought, who am I kidding, I would watch Everyone Loves Hypnotoad every week if it meant Futurama was back on the air. Long live Futurama!
-
As long as you follow Got Futurama (http://www.gotfuturama.com/) on the web, facebook or twitter, you're good and in the know.
If you don't, I say your three cent titanium tax doesn't go too far enough!
-
Good News, Everyone! The first 90 seconds of the first new episode is on the interwebs (http://ccinsider.comedycentral.com/tag/countdown-to-futurama/)!
(youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-CuAvPgpyU) for non-US meatbags)
There's also a 7-minute recap floating around narrated by Brannigan, but I can't be bothered to find it now. It's funny, but nothing new, just a recap of the whole series to date.
-
next week, next week, almost there, just breathe
I can't stand the waiting!
I've been watching a shitload of Futurama reruns lately (even more than usual!) to get myself prepared for next thursday and it's just making the wait even worse.
so I'm avoiding spoilers to keep myself sane and to ensure maximum enjoyment
-
fuck yeah i forgot about this
not that futurama was back but when it was coming back
one of the perils of not watching tv anymore

yeah so im smoking a ton of weed for this
a literal TONNE
-
So....thoughts?
-
First episode was pretty okay. Second episode for the most part felt like a late-period Simpsons "it's a well-known story but with the Simpsons as characters" episode, and its ending was abrupt. I think Futurama's at its best when it sticks with a strong A plot. The second episode's A plot was all set up for the B plot, which was pretty boring.
-
Not going to lie, I was a bit disappointed. I didn't really laugh at all throughout the two episodes, the jokes felt really obvious, and I'm not sure that I like the Fry & Leela being together thing.
Then again, I was expecting to be disappointed.
-
I don't know, I think Futurama is pretty gutsy to go with the main characters together, what with it being such a legendarily bad move for most shows.
I guess it could also be read as foolhardy, given that, you know, technically their getting together was supposed to be the end of the show. The second episode certainly didn't take their relationship very seriously, which was another thing that made it feel pretty flimsy.
-
I've only seen the first one so far, but in my viewing of it I was so excited to be watching new Futurama that I was almost entirely uncritical. It just seemed really goofy and self-aware. It wasn't very complex or surprising, but I didn't really require that of it.
-
I liked the first one, especially the fact that Amy asked why their voices changed, but I didn't really like the second one. I blame Zap's cut aways every time he had to admit something.
-
I honestly thought it was wonderful. I was laughing pretty much the entire time, and the stuff with the robots was such a classic Futurama type of story that I couldn't help but love it.
It is a little weird seeing Fry and Leela actually admitting their feelings for each other. They've been dancing around it pretty much since the show started, but I gotta admit it made me smile.
I might have even gone "awwww"
-
All the little bits thrown in here and there from past episodes were the best. Like did you notice when they were showing the map of the solar system when V-GTNY (or whatever) was headed to earth that one of the planets was "Urectum"? I chuckled maniacally when I saw that.
-
i was actually pleasantly surprised by the episodes. i thought they could have been better, but they certainly could have been much worse. if they don't pick it up though i'll probably stop giving a shit.
-
not the best episodes, but far from the worst. i was satisfied, and i expect it to go uphill as they find their footing again.
i do wonder how they are going to proceed fry and leela though; so much of the how was about a guy who just can't get the girl, and now he's got her.

-
Hehehehehehe
-
These episodes are getting progressively better. Most recent was the best so far, and completely felt like the older stuff.
-
I really like the new episodes now. I feel they've gained a lot of steam.
However, right now, after the most recent new episode, a rerun of Jurassic Bark, where Fry finds his old dog, is on now. I know if I keep watching it I'm going to tear up. I kinda think I should flip away...
edit: oh god, i'm tearing up.
-
yeah, that episode is waaay too sad for it's own good.
-
Yeah, as these have been progressing they've definitely been getting better. They're up to date, snappy, and just as silly as they were before. My earlier doubts are beginning to wane.
-
Jurassic Bark is nowhere near as sad after you've seen Bender's Big Score.
-
that honestly pissed me off. they totally neutered some of the saddest shit any show had ever had the balls to put on the air.
-
So how about this weeks episode? I really like it, especially the part at the end where the robot pulled a Farnsworth and blasted off into space in disgust.
-
Great ep. Just getting better and better.
TRILOBOTS! brought the lols.
-
This week's epsiode was definately the funniest so far. The romance scence with Scruffy and the Bucket Robot in Amy's body is fucking comedy gold.
-
I'm disappointed in that moment because I know anything else they do from now on, especially with Scruffy, will never measure up. Here I was thinking they wouldn't beat, "I don't want to live on this planet anymore," this season and in a very different actually funny way they killed it.
