Ok, so I need to get a present for a friend, and I know she wants some Slayer albums. problem is, I'm really not into that kind of music myself, have never listened to Slayer in my life, and would rather not just buy a random album.
This is where the internet comes in handy.
Would any of you be able to help recommend which are the best Slayer albums? I'm getting two between myself and my girlfriend, but which should I get?
Cheers :)

Does she already have Reign in Blood? If not, get them Reign in Blood. It is pretty much the definitive Slayer album.
Past that, I suppose you'd go with (in rough order) Seasons in the Abyss, Hell Awaits, and South of Heaven. All the rest are probably optional.
Well to be honest, in my opnion, every album except RiB is optional because if you have one Slayer album, you've pretty much heard em all. But I'm sure someone else in the course of thread will call me a fucking pussy for that.
-
You fucking pussy.
-
Seasons in the Abyss is pretty much the only one I ever listen to, but I suppose Reign in Blood is the quintessential Slayer album.
-
South of Heaven is pretty ok also.
-
<band> sucks!

I'm not a great big Slayer fan. I'm not even a great big slayer fan fan.
I was at a concert once were they were going to play as headliner and we left when they started because the crowd became ... intense. Extremely so. No issue during Cradle Of Filth's set but the tension just jumped through the roof when Slayer came on.
Therefore my recommendation would be to get Decade of Agression. It's the only Slayer thing you'll need and it captures the essence of a Slayer gig quite well.
Not for me.
-
:-o
I'm not surprised a Cradle of Filth fan would be scared of a Slayer set. Too intense is right...I'd like to see your reaction to a Kreator crowd.
-
I had a terrible time at the last Slayer show I went to, but that's mostly because my friend James had a stroke while the band did a transition from Raining Blood to Angel of Death for the opener, whipping the whole place into a frenzy pretty much instantly. Luckily we were pretty near the front and the security guys were on the ball, but let me tell you, getting your friend 5 feet through a Slayer crowd when the dude is incapable of doing anything but stumbling to the left is not fun. Just one of the many reasons why it's probably not a good idea to have your diet consist mostly of amphetamines, cigarettes and hard alcohol. Having a stroke at a Slayer concert at 28 years old makes for a good party story but at the end of the day you still walk with a limp.
-
One of my favourite things to do at gigs is look for the dude in a Slayer shirt. There's always one. No matter what the gig.
-
I always want to hi-five that dude. Especially when he's seeing The Fray.
Or Foo Fighters.
-
I don't like that guy. That guy is A Dick.
-

Oh ... not so much at the set but of the fans, hell yes!
Also ... what's up with Kreator then? The last time I heard anything from them was ... I had to wiki this, I heard songs from Extreme Agression. Nothing afterwards. So enlighten me, please.
... dude ... stroke? At 28? That sucks, even if he made it there willingly ...
-

I am generally That Guy.
You kind of make me feel Sad.
-
I liked how in the late '90s a lot of metal concerts I went to typically had at least one gigantic burly dude wearing something like a I <3 Britney or Hanson t-shirt wandering around looking terribly smug. That guy was also probably a dick, but it still kind of amused me to watch some of my more stereotypically belligerent metal fan friends suddenly keeping their mouth shut about something they almost certainly would have given anyone else flak about.
-
You know, it kinda bums me out how much time I used to spend hanging out with people who were basically terrible.
-
And usually those guys were fucking HUGE!
I agree ... a sight to behold.
-
best thread ever.
HANDS DOWN SEASONS IN THE ABYSS.
i'd argue this to the death.
following albums include:
south of heaven and divine intervention

Their new album is pretty good.
-
Kreator is a lot heavier than Slayer, and more aggressive, yet just as fast. Their concerts are suitably crazy, so if you couldn't handle Slayer then you definitely wouldn't be able to handle Kreator live.
IMHO, everything after Coma of Souls isn't *quite* as great, but Hordes of Chaos (the new one) is a lot better than the two albums before it, in my opinion.
-
I'm not very experienced in Thrash Metal. The only bands I truly love are Coroner and Sepultura...
But I have to answer your quesion, that's what the thread is for. Reign in Blood sounds like too obvious and it would be very possible that your friend already has that album.
I recommend the ones that is still my favorite: Hell Awaits...
You can't go wrong when your listening to the opening: SU NIOJ! SU NIOJ! and the music stars with that lovely drum...
Yeah... that's my answer, Hell Awaits OOOOOR get the debut "Show No Mercy"... Some really overlooked slayer album IMO.
