Title: Dawn of Discovery
Post by: mberan42 on 03 Aug 2009, 14:26
Has anyone played this game yet? It sounds incredibly intreguing. I love RTS games, I love Civilization (et. al.) even more. I'm thinking about buying it, but would like to hear if anyone else has played it.

Here's a review from the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/03/arts/03discovery.html?_r=1&ref=arts) (of all places).

That looks interesting. I've never been much into RTS games, mostly because I get frustrated too quickly when my opponent starts doing things I'm not prepared for. But an empire-building game without emphasis on warfare? I don't think I've ever seen that before. It might be just the thing to take RTS to the people who don't play conventional strategy games.

I didn't know what game you were talking about until the review said it was Anno 1404! I don't really see why they decided to change the name; Does Dawn of Discovery really say more about the game than Anno 1404? Or do history lessons in the US stop at the year 1492?

American History goes:

Egypt!
Greece!
Rome!
Some Native American dudes were doing stuff too!
Then nothing happened in the world
1492! AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!
Sometime shortly after. PILGRIMS! MAYFLOWER, MOTHERFUCKER!
1776! FUCK YOU ENGLAND!
1861! SHIT YEAH FREE THEM BLACK PEOPLE!
1941-45! FUCK OFF GERMANY and using nukes was horrible but necessary BTW guys.

And that's when history ends.

That's more or less it minus these additions:

1914-1919: Yeah the other war, we built the UN, suck it y'all
1929: POVERTY and OIL BARONS
1800-present: Oh, those crazy Russkis

Ozy, I kinda want to sig-quote that entire post, but I'm pretty sure it's too big.

I thought it went:
Age of Empires I
Age of Empires II
Age of Empires III
or Civilization
(blank space)
Call of Duty
