WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO THE TOURNAMENT
To begin, let me say thank you everyone for participating. Before I reveal the tournament matchups, let me explain the nomination process. Transparency in government, yay! So, you all nominated albums. Every single album that was nominated by two or more people made it, which made for 127 albums. The 128th album, per request of the Vice President, the QC board's very own scarred, was Marissa Nadler's Songs III: Bird on the Water. Seeding was determined by the amount of votes recieved and, in the case of ties in nominations, myself and scarred poured over the list and made agreements on which albums should recieve which seeds. Once that was finished, I randomly chose matchups for all the albums according to their seeding. What you see before you is the result!
I'd be very surprised if everyone has heard every single one of the albums up for voting. With that in mind, I decided to make it so we could, if we wanted to. If you click on any album's name, it will take you to either a page on lala.com that allows you to stream the album in its entirety or, if Lala doesn't have the album, then it will link to another site (usually amazon.com) that allows you to stream 30 second samples of each song on the album. So if you want to compare, or if you're just interested to hear something you haven't before, click away! (Full disclosure: Lala requires you to create an account to use its services. It is completley free, but some peole feel uncomfortable about that stuff.) (Also note that there is no streaming version of the Jon Brion version of Fiona Apple's Extraordinary Machine.)
Please, make sure to vote in every match as it will make counting votes much easier. Skipping a match will either result in whoever is counting up the votes filling in an answer for you, or your votes not being counted.
Brackets are listed in tournament-style order.
Voting starts IMMEDIATELY and ends on Monday, September 7th, at 11:59 PM CENTRAL TIME.
Thanks a bunch!

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT LIVING IN CANADA SUCKS SOMETIMES

Or wait for people to mediafire stuff, either way
-
Before I start voting let me just say that I'm slightly confused because Sleater-Kinney's "One Beat" was nominated twice and I think "The Woods" was only nominated once (by myself, maybe?)
Anyway fucking shit why are Future of the Left and Sleater-Kinney up against each other in the first round? Already a hard decision.

I really hope Godspeed and Eluvium make it past this round and beyond. Eluvium probably won't get far but c'mon, Godspeed at least has to have a small chance of getting near the end, even if it won't win (I'll throw my vote behind You Forgot it in People or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or possibly Funeral(?) for that although I'm sure I'll be surprised).

Hoping Sigur Ros makes it through and really hoping Black Moth Super Rainbow beats The Microphones. I never quite got all the hype behind The Glow pt. 2 but people do love it. DG is so much cooler though!

I think you can rest easy about GY!BE, at least for this round. Nachtmystium have little to no chance which is a bit of a shame really, they could have been a surprise runner with different opposition. Personally I'd like to see Eluvium go out purely because that would mean the one hip-hop album that got into the first round didn't go out immediately, but I suspect this might be a vain hope.
also no orchid whaaaaaaaaaaaaat. i probably should have nominated gatefold.
You're damn right you should have!
There are a few really interesting matches here. With Botch versus Dead Meadow you've got the hippies versus the punks, a cloud of bong smoke against a clenched fist, Dead Meadow's harkening back to psychedelia and '70s rock throwing down against Botch's thoroughly contemporary technical assault that gives few nods to anything before Kiss It Goodbye (except for at the end). We Are The Romans did very well in nominations but it was the only Botch album eligible, votes for Dead Meadow were split between several releases. Beulah versus The Strokes could be a good draw for Beulah since The Strokes might be a band with a lot of fans but they're also a band with a lot of haters, and Beulah could do well from people with minimal to no knowledge of them voting against The Strokes (I know I did, they sounded alright from a cursory listen and that was good enough). I'm also interested in how Lightning Bolt and Boris will do, I can imagine there are a lot of people like me who didn't place them in their nominations but like those records a hell of a lot more than most other albums in the running.
-
I don't think Lightning Bolt stands a chance of getting past even this round, to be honest. Not only is Transatlantacism DcfC's best album with room to spare, it's also just a really good album without any context. Lightning Bolt is definitely cool, I'm a fan, but that's not at all an album that a lot of people would be into. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see DcfC win that one by a fairly large margin.
As for Sigur Ros vs. Boris, Boris will probably win. I personally think the SR album is much, much better but a) a lot of people on this board like Boris and b) a lot of people hate on SR on principal (a la In the Aeroplane Over the Sea). Not just here, mind you, but in general. As for Boris v. Mastodon, I think Boris will win that one too. I don't really anticipate Boris going much past round two unless it's matched up against something particularly not-good that managed to slip through the cracks of round one but I find that unlikely but I'm expecting both albums to make it past this round.
-
I think you're probably right about neither making it past the second round, although I'm still willing to pin some hopes on LB doing a little giant killing.

Hey, sorry if the USA is just too awesome for you to handle. Seriously, though, rhapsody would work for about one album? I am unaware of ways to listen to large amounts of music at once.

You said if I don't vote someone else will fill it in. Well if I've never heard the damn albums that'll be a skewed list. If someone else fills it in, at least it'll be SOMEONE'S opinion.
This list is insane. No group of people or forum I've even been on or around would make this list apart from this one. I've never even heard OF most of these, let alone heard them.
-
Oh no!
-
Please, make sure to vote in every match as it will make counting votes much easier. Skipping a match will either result in whoever is counting up the votes filling in an answer for you, or your votes not being counted.
I just noticed this. It's a really bad idea for the person counting up the votes to decide themselves what the vote should be if someone's skipped a match, it'll only end in trouble. If it's a massive amount of extra hassle then maybe discount someone's votes (although I'm a bit puzzled as to why it makes things so much more complicated), but if you take the votes yourselves you'll just completely skew the results.

Yeah, and voting one way or the other when I've heard neither album just skews it even more. It'd end up being 'oh, well I've heard of Fugazi, and that one album of theirs that I have is quite good, so I'll vote for their one.' Or worse yet, 'Well, "The Weakerthans" is kind of a cool band name, I'll vote for them instead of the other guys.'
-
Yeah, that way we could end up with two albums in the final hardly anyone gives a shit about but both had good covers.
-
That would be fine, you then change the name of the competition to 'Album cover of the decade'. I think I will abstain from the rest of the competition because like DynamiteKid I haven't heard of many of these albums let alone listened to them :|

Wait yeah, this souns like a pretty bad idea
I don't understand why someone has to fill in skipped votes in the first place. If this is an elimination-style thing, then skipping a few votes shouldn't make a difference

Yeah, that's a really stupid rule. It doesn't make a lick of difference if people skip a match.

Bracket One
Marissa Nadler - Songs III: Bird on the Water
Sigur Rós - Takk...

Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes

Owen - At Home With Owen
Oh God this is so hard. I can only listen to one bracket at a time, and even then it was sometimes hard to find an album I wanted to vote for. I'll fill it in as I can find courage to listen to more.
Edit: How bad could Bracket Eight be?
Low - Things We Lost in the Fire
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
Future of the Left - Travels with Myself and Another
At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
I can't do this any more. I have found maybe one or two albums that I didn't hate. I have no business voting here.
-
Yeah, can someone make sure whoever's running it does this intelligently, and just counts no-votes as, uh, "no-votes"? Doesn't seem too hard to do.

Hardest matchups? Low/Make Believe, and Fugazi/Owen. Also guys we are better than Merriweather Post Pavilion. We can beat this, we are not Pitchfork. Don't make it a less successful (much less) Aeroplane Over the Sea. Please. Besides, Run to Ruin is an amazing album, far better than MPP by all counts.
EDIT - Changed a vote from Death Cab.

man I gotta hear this Marissa Nadler album that people are voting over Kid A for because I kind of assumed that was a shoe in right there
Also what kind of horrible decision was it making me choose between Sound of Silver and Blast Tyrant in the first round (sorry Clutch)
-
I only voted for it because I can't, in good conscience, vote for a Radiohead album. I could vote for an album of Radiohead songs performed by people other than Radiohead (within reason, of course), but I just can't get into Radiohead's execution of their songs at all. Yes, I know this marks me as anathema to indie fans, but this is how I feel.
-
is it any good though?
-
It's at least vaguely acceptable. If you like really simple, folk-y music, it's probably pretty good (well, someone legitimately voted to have it in the list, at least).
-
It's actually really good for what it is - a great example of the genre whereas Kid A is mostly pseudo-artsy bullshit and a poor example of ambient, rhythm centric electronica. Thankfully, Yorke's The Eraser was a massive step up from it. Still, not album of decade material.
-
The Marissa Nadler album is pretty remarkable, honestly, and I'm glad someone nominated since I haven't heard it before. It's just unfortunate that Kid A is basically the only Radiohead album I genuinely enjoy on any level (I guess I'm voting In Rainbows over Kings of Leon though but whatever), I mean if Silkworm makes it to the second round and it goes against Radiohead like it's looking then that is definitely a no-brainer type of match for me. Sigur Ros against Radiohead would be a bit harder.
I was mostly just tortured by the fact that one entire bracket had a bunch of stuff I didn't care about, while others had extremely hard match-ups (Sleater-Kinney versus Future of the Left, Battles versus Mastodon, The Unicorns and Portishead.)
Um, stupid question but, uhhh...why not have Bracket One, Two, Three, Four, et cetera?
I think because the brackets themselves are seeded as well?
I'm also pretty sure anyone who's concerned probably shouldn't worry too much about Animal Collective taking the whole thing, the other number 1 seeds are really stiff competition. It could very well take its bracket though, but should maybe look out for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
-

You and I are gonna fight.
-
yeah it almost sounds like you are trying to describe Amnesiac but maybe you took too much Ketamine instead because that is just not a very good description of Kid A to be honest.
Also it is possible I might actually hate the Eraser more than I hate Hitler but it's hard to tell because The Eraser never really killed 30 million people
-
The filling in votes thing was just kind of a threat to encourage people to vote in every match.
Let me take a moment to explain the desire for everyone to vote in every match (though, it's obvious that won't be happening, which I suppose is fine).
By having people vote in every match, it introduces an element of chance that is a part of any sort of tournament (see: NCAA basketball) or any sort of democratic process (see: People who don't know anything about politics voting for President). By having people voting in every chance, a very dynamic, unpredictable thing can happen that makes tournaments exciting (who doesn't enjoy seeing something like George Mason get to the Final Four or Barack Obama winning the Iowa caucus?).
Secondly, and less importantly, by having the same amount of votes for every match, it serves as an effective double-check for vote counting. If every match has 70 votes, and a match ends up 35 votes to 36 votes in your counting, you know you've done something wrong but, if all the matches have different vote counts, you may not realize the match is actually a tie until, I don't know, three rounds later when someone points it out and, oh shit, what are we going to do?
Anyway, there's the reasoning behind that rule, though it has become readily apparent that no one approves of it, which I was actually kind of shocked by.
Regardless, I started running the tournament to have fun doing it but, it seems as though the disconnect between my tournament-running style and the social dynamic of the board might be too far removed for either group to have a good time doing it. So, I think it would probably be better if someone else ran this? I think that everyone would have a better time that way. E Spaceman? scarred?
So, yeah. I hope you guys have a good time with this tournament. Good luck!
-
I don't think we necessarily want to drive you out, dude, there are just some people voting in this tournament who are hardly voting for anything and if their votes were all filled in then that would probably fuck up the results pretty bad. I'm not so sure it's a social dynamic as much as we all realize that some people voting will not care to listen to some things or will just straight up vote for only the things they've heard of. Asking them to vote in 5/6 of the matches based on nothing, or filling them in arbitrarily would just be bad and would cause a loss of legitimacy for the results.
And there are plenty of people (like myself) who are voting in every match anyway, so it's not like the chance you talk about isn't present.
-

As a person who lives in a country with compulsory voting I can assure you that making people vote does not produce exciting, unpredictable results
quite the opposite!
-
I don't really understand the attitude that everyone who votes for Animal Collective/likes them is some kind of bandwagon-ing Pitchfork dick-suck. A lot of people just genuinely enjoy their music for what it is outside of hype. Seems kinda ridiculous to assume that when something becomes vaguely popular, everyone who likes that music is only doing so because it's fashionable to do so. I think MPP is a legitimately great album of psychedelic/experimental electronic pop, and would have thought that regardless of what score it got on Pitchfork. If you don't like AC, fine, but don't wear it like a crown of anti-hipster backlash.
-
I Am Not Amused: I'm not complaining about the way you're running things here, and I understand where you're coming from about wanting people to participate in all of the matches. Personally, I'm trying to download and listen to most of albums I haven't heard (a good 20% of the list here) so I can make somewhat intelligent choices, but I know that a lot of people probably don't have that kind of free time, and would rather just not vote instead of picking albums at random and skewing the results.
I don't think it's necessarily a criticism of your tournament running style.. more of a convenience thing. Maybe people would make more of an effort to listen to the stuff they don't already know if you extended the deadline or something? I dunno.

I am getting sick of hearing about Pitchfork because the only two places I ever here anyone mention it are here, and at the very, very worst house parties and so every single person I have met in the flesh who actually knows what Pitchfork is is a tedious dickbag and so you guys keep giving me flashbacks auuuuuugh
as for making everyone listen to every single album up for voting, this is a ridiculous idea for many reasons.
1) The albums linked only work in the US. This puts anyone outside the US at an automatic disadvantage as we have to track down half the albums ourselves.
2) In a few cases even when I've heard both albums I've abstained because I think they're both pretty bad or nothing special
3) It would probably take about a month of straight listening to listen to the albums on the list I haven't heard. How long would it take to get EVERYONE to listen to all the albums they haven't heard?
4) Most of the albums I have heard on this list I have a personal history with in some form or another hence why I voted for them, that usually takes a while to develop. Kid A for example reminds me of a very specific point in my life, the only thing that Marissa Nadler album is going to remind me of is that time I participated in a giant album knockout tournament
Also what the fuck firefox is flagging "Reminds" as a spelling error.
-
But, with those people, it's really fun to set them on each other. They spend the entire party trying to come up with bands the other person hasn't heard of. I was once chatting up a girl at one of those parties, and one of those people started talking to me, which was miserable, but then another one showed up and they spent the entire time doing the above while the cute girl and I sat and laughed at them.
-
The only reason I brought up Pitchfork is because the fact that they gave MPP a high score seems to be the justification for people who don't like Animal Collective to immediately dismiss any of their fans as being Pitchfork drones. I agree with you Hat, Pitchfork (and the people who actually talk about it) are fucking annoying and tedious namedroppers for the most part. I'm arguing that it's unfair to assume that anyone who likes a band that a particular website also likes somehow got their tastes purely from that website. People who like AC should not be strawmen for bashing Pitchfork. If you want to do that, just go, "Hey, I don't like Pitchfork. Or Animal Collective. That is my opinion and you guys can also have an opinion that is different from mine without being pigeon-holed."

You have now mentioned that website in two posts now making you the person on this page who is talking about it the most so please stop

You are making Hat uncomfortable with your words.

I was under the impression that Pitchfork was more of a "gorilla in the room" sort of topic; everyone knows what it is, but to actually mention or reference it is considered vulgar. I guess it is Americentric to assume, but I hadn't realized there were that many people who hadn't heard of it.
Also FUCK YOU tournament, relistening to Of Course and Things We Lost in the Fire did not make the choice easier AT ALL
-
Hat, you're like my friend who has this strange reaction to the sound of Styrofoam. It actually makes him physically ill to hear it; it's like his kryptonite.

Well it probably helps they hold a massive music festival every year. Also it is an internet website and a lot of people still do not take the internet that seriously (they will pay)

It's getting late here so I'm doing this tomorrow if have the time.
And also... I can't fucking believe I was the only one who voted for Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
I can understand it since it's a doom metal album, but there where some folks here who know some good (doom) metal stuff so that's why I'm deeply disappointed, that album imho is the best thing this decade. There's no way anything from 2009 or 2010 will be better.

I thought You Are There was pretty boring anyway, to be honest?
-
I think it was too soon that those two albums would fight against each other.
And In my humble opinion... Mono takes over explosions every day of the week.
-
Eep, reply number 106 is the last one to fall within the time alotted.
I'll count this up with scarred and maybe brett if he still wants and we'll stet up the next round
-
Fuckkkkkk

I agree wholeheartedly. I really do not understand what people see in EitS.
-
I find some of Mono's harmonic progressions a bit weak; I don't feel this with EitS.
-
Say what you will about EitS, but "The Birth and Death of the Day" is a fucking masterpiece.
-
holy shit there are opinions in here

Get your theory out of my rock, poindexter
-
Explosions In The Sky are absolutely amazing for teaming up with the Westwood soundboard (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/westwood/soundboard.shtml). Unfortunately, this is the only context in which I would ever want to listen to them.
-
oddly enough david, mono doesn't think of themselves as a rock band, they see themselves creating a form of classical music.
-
Taka, the main songwriter for the band, often cites Beethoven as a primary inspiration and reference point for their music. Him and Led Zepplin. So...classical rock, perhaps?
-
no that can't be right classical rock is dogshit
-
ROUND 2: BEETHOVEN V. MODERN MUSIC
-
someone photoshop a picture of Beethoven looking particularly angry so he has a hunting knife between his teeth come on do this for me please
-
ROUND 2: BEETHOVEN V. MODERN MUSIC
Damnit, I'm too tired to think up some amusing comment being pretend semantic about how the Modern period is over and that we're now post-modern (I really do wonder what's next, because the Futurists came around the same time as the Modern period). Just assume that it was funny and everyone laughed.
-
I don't think they're talking about Modernist composition anyway
-
That was going to be the subject of the joke; an on-purpose misunderstanding.
