Title: Hanners Omptimism
Post by: Geekdumb on 16 Sep 2009, 09:04
I just love how optimistic/naive Hanners can be at times.  Today's comic made me laugh because no one else would have assumed that it was six more instead of six less.

Maybe she just thinks Marigold is a hoe!  :-o

But seriously, maybe it's just that she thinks that Marigold is too normal to never have dated at her age.

Remember, Hanners has no guage for "normal".  Most of us use ourselves, until we realize just how fucked up we really are!

Now lets see how many people jump to the wrong conclusion about that statement... or is it the right conclusion? DUH DUH DAAAAAAA!!!!

This could have just gone in the WCT.

By those standards, so could everything else.

Oh man, what if it was clearly spelled out in the forum rules what belongs in the WCT? That would be something.

Personally, I wish some of the crap floating around in WTC could be siphoned off into its own little cesspools. Not that this is one of those topics. but it has the potential to be.

And Hanners' optimism is one of her more endearing qualities (the naivete seems a little harder to reconcile, to me, but it's a vehicle for the optimism, so I understand why Jeph maintains it). I think it's why all the shipping nonsense irritates me. Concentrating on "who's going to fuck Hanners first" (and that's exactly how all that Hantai bullcrap read to me, and now the Marigold fixation, too) misses the central point of the character. The question, at this point in her life, is not who, of whatever gender, Hannelore is going to have a romantic or even simply sexual relationship with, but can she have one at all? She's got a ton of roadblocks even to having friends, one of which she's overcoming with Marigold. But instead of considering that, we get this wave of "ooo, get with teh sexing."

I think that's why the word 'creepy' gets attached to the Hanners shippers, because it seems like instead of reading the comic and paying attention to what's happening with the character, they're screaming for something to masturbate to. And yes, I'm aware some do this strictly because they think it's amusing, but, to me, anyway, it's not. I can be as amused by perviness as the next person (maybe more so), but not this situation. Maybe later in Hanner's progress, but not now.

In these last few strips we see Hanners trying to be a friend and to extend that optimism (whether she means to do the latter or not) to someone whom it's becoming more and more clear needs both rather badly, much more than she needs (or is ready for) a lover at this point (I suspect sex would be a disaster for Marigold right now). Somehow the screeches of ' Marigold, Hanners, fuck, fuck, fuck' overlaid on that irritate me.

If you don't like the shippers then just ignore them.  Besides, I'm certain the majority are doing it to be amusing.  It's really not that big of a deal.

I do ignore it, mostly, or try to; sometimes it's difficult, because it does bother me. I've been finding it curious that I was more annoyed by it than, say, the Sven-Faye shipping, and thinking about Hanners' optimism seemed to crystallize my reasons for that.

The only thing that really troubles me about other shipping are those odious couple portmanteaus. A plague on them and their propagators.

Hannegold!  Fayngus!  Dorten!  Svaven!  Taipernicus (I think Tai should totally build a time machine and a genetics laboratory so she can hook up with a female clone of Copernicus)!

I guess time machines are less improbable with Tainstein. Or Marty McTai.

We'll probably find out Tai's actually the next reincarnation of the Doctor

Well that was an obvious first guess...

Keep in mind that there was also "Doc" (im sure he had a name but i cant remember it) from the Back to the Future movies. That would be equaly posible here, especialy considering the Marty McTai gag...

Now that i think about it, back in '96 i went to Universal Studios where i got picked out of the Audience to  roleplay Marty (My dad was 'electrocuted' as Doc) and got to get behind the wheel of the Delorian with a chick who actualy kinda looked like a young Tai...

Check. Surgoshan, your plague is on the way, just as soon as I can get the bones arranged in the proper pattern and limber up a bit. Oh, and locate 2 cc. of mouse blood.

I am rather dispointed at the lack of response to the fact that i got to 'drive' THE delorian...  :x

Is Hanners, in general, optimistic?

She devotes a lot of effort to harm avoidance, was afraid something would go wrong if she introduced herself to Marten and Faye, and remember what she thought when she threw up in the morning.

I think paranoia and optimism aren't mutually exclusive. Even though she's very anxious by nature doesn't mean she assumes the worst in people (in this case, people).

Shit, maybe that's why my last plague petered out to a mere annoyance.

*sigh* I guess I better go unstrap the hamster.

Yes, but she also has not, so far, given up and retreated to her hole the way Marigold, for example, has.

Consider these strips:

Yes, she's knocked down, but it's pretty clear that sooner or later Hannelore is going to try to work out a better smile, then try again. That's optimism.

If she doesn't assume the worst of people, why the brass knuckles and expandable baton? Can't find the comic offhand, but it was when she moved in with Marten and Faye while analyzing her mother's records.

With some people, you should assume the worst!

Like the guy who breaks into your apartment...

Self defense should not be confused with a lack of faith in human nature!

The Buddha would disagree.  Enjoy your next life as a cockroach.  Maybe next time you'll be willing to live and let die, asshole.

Well, she *could* be an optimist who prepares like a pessimist. But she is at the very least conservative in her assessments. When Tai suggested a new OCD drug, Hannelore didn't go "ooh, cool! Maybe it'll fix me!", but instead said she wouldn't try it because it might backfire.
