Jeph,

Have a great day; don't worry about us, we'll still be here even if you were to take two days or a week or more off.

Don't worry Jeph, you're one of the few comic writers who are very consistent with their deadlines (even if you have to stay up until 5am to get it done!). If you need to take a day off here and there, then you've certainly earned that right with your stellar track record over the last few years.

Also, don't overwhelm yourself trying to "mix things up." I don't think any of us will hold you to that. New art/stories could be interesting, but more of the same is perfectly fine. ;)

If anyone has a problem with Jeph not posting tonight/today (which is ludicrous considering he is one of the few well-known, GOOD webcomic artists out there that actually does shit on time, nevermind publish more than one comic a week!) deserves to have something sharp and pointy shoved up their ass. This is not a diss at all to Jeph's work.. but seriously, its just a web comic. The world will not end for you if you do not get your daily dosage of QC (besides.. how do you survive on the weekends?!).

As the others have said, Jeph, take the time you need. Real life comes before comic life.

You suck Jeph!  [/obvioustrollisobvious]

At this rate he'll be spending more time apologizing than he will on the actual comiic.  Besides, all he has to do is draw Sweet-Tits in a thong and he's pretty much satisfied a good 60-75% of the audience.

I've had creative blocks a lot worse than Jeph.  Me, I can't imagine churning out a comic five days a week, each and every freaking week, and have it not be about the caliber of Family Circus or Wizard of Id for cliched suckitude.  If he just needs a night off, we'll survive.

Woah, we don't deserve a new comic, Jeph! Hell, I've been reading from the first year of the strip and have never bought a single piece of merchandise. And I'm pretty sure I'm in the majority unless your sale figures are the same as your unique visitor count.

Take it easy - you've been spoiling us for years, you can afford to slack off for a day.

How QC is better than a pizza.

If a pizza is 30 minutes late, you get it for free. We get QC for free even when it arrives "on time" (and Jeph has never promised any particular delivery time).

QC is still good the next morning.

QC never comes with anchovies.

I too hope Jeph is all right and look forward to his latest experiments with the artwork.

I agree with most of the previous sentiments: jeph, just chill, man. It's all good. If anything, it's your AUDIENCE that are the slackers. Sit back, drink something (or smoke something, whatever), invite some friends over for some downtime. Whatever it takes to recharge the creativity.

Darn it, I like Anchovies! Can I get my QC with anchovies? But no pineapple, that's just nasty! I mean when is it appropriate to put pineapple on a baked product? I don't like coconut on my QC either.

On a personal note, take care of you, Jeph. If doing the comic helps keep you moving, then do it, if it's just making it harder, then don't. I think it's been made pretty clear already that no one is going to think less of you if you need to take a break.

Jeph, I know the comic helps.  And nothing gets you over the "I'm not worthy" feeling than getting something out there that is really worthy!

This strip may not have been what you had in mind (how often are they?), but a side trip into AnthroPC humor is always welcome, and doesn't really happen often enough.  And this trip was... well... trippy!

You might want to talk to someone (a professional) about SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder.  I know you're on meds, but sometimes things get thrown out of whack by your environment.  I know that fall has a weird (negative) affect on me, since I was a kid.  Sleeplessness, a general panicky feeling, depression, and a few other symptoms that sound a little like what you're going through.  I got through it in the 70's-80's through psychotherapy (before there were meds), and my daughter and I now use light therapy.  It can work!

Remember, fall doesn't suck, and neither do you!

Also, Hanners look cute as FUCK in the second panel. I don't know what Jeph did, but I think that has to be one my favorite poses or whatever of a QC character!

Today's comic really gives me a deep respect for Jeph, even deeper than I had before. The fact that he's able to function at all through all of this, let alone put out a comic, let alone have it actually be good is astounding. Jeph may not think he's very good, but today proved that Jeph at his very worst point is still better than most at their best.

You don't have to go to an italian pizzeria to get good QC.

I get the feeling that Pintsize would love that update.
As far as I understood it, it's an update to OtakuPCs. Pintsize with fingers would be horrible. Or horribly good. But with him without fingers, there's possible probable guaranteed envy and drama between the AnthroPCs, too.

I just noticed that Momo has four fingers in the beginning! That's doubleplusungood, because four is death (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FourIsDeath)!

Oh and nice hair.

Jeph, the only thing unacceptable about this comic is that Momo is unhappy. When Momo is unhappy, I  am unhappy.

Also, you demolish your own argument in the commentary. If you are "not even very good" at this comic, how is it that you have a "Popular Website"? How many unique hits a day does it get?  We have you seriously, overwhelmingly outvoted as to the quality of your work!

Be well. Unfortunately cannot make SPX in Maryland, what with the whole being-on-a-different-continent thing...

Synchronicity strikes in the form of Scientific American's October Issue Alert in my mailbox. From the sidebar:

Web Exclusives
Depression's Evolutionary Roots
Two scientists suggest that depression is not a malfunction, but a mental adaptation that brings certain cognitive advantages
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=depressions-evolutionary (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=depressions-evolutionary)

In essence the article (itself an abbreviated version of their full paper) hypothesises that depression is an adaptation for analysing complex problems. I was struck by this line: "Several studies have found that expressive writing promotes quicker resolution of depression...", so Jeph's observation that writing the comic acts as therapy may be more than anecdotal.

The authors stress that this is a hypothesis rather than a theory (no, Creationists, the words are not synonymous) so scepticism is in order - if anyone reads the article, please take the time to read the criticisms and counter-arguments in the comments section too - but I found it intriguing stuff. Full paper here: http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=search.displayRecord&uid=2009-10379-009 (http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=search.displayRecord&uid=2009-10379-009)

One comment refers to an alternative evolutionary hypothesis for depression but included a broken link - I tracked it down here: http://fmdrl.org/index.cfm?event=c.getAttachment&riid=1321 (http://fmdrl.org/index.cfm?event=c.getAttachment&riid=1321)

Damn, the firmware updates from hell...bane of modern electronic devices and examples of why QC on your code is a good thing.

See also:  the blessed button of hard reset (which you never have an object small enough to push). the day the computer started acting like something out of The Exorcist, and "It was working just a minute ago" *pokepoke* *kZAP* "MOTHER(*#$Y*(&_(*!"

My .02 USD on the whole thing isn't the SAD (hell, you can get a taste of it even here in the southern US if you work indoors and aren't a outdoors hobby person) or the OCD bits.  Jeph might just benefit from a bit of prioritization.  I've found after years of being a plain obsessive person (with a minor in ahh, screw it tendencies) that some people will figure out what your buttons are & push them at just the wrong moments when you're overloaded with work & other concerns.  Short of severe violence (or threats thereof, my favorite choice!) you can either build in a buffer the weather the bad or learn the say "Enough!  Timeout!"

Back up, look at the last few years, repeat the Litany Against Fear a few times.  Rinse, repeat, do not emulate Hanners vs. the Public Works Dept.

Damn man. Jeph, i know how ya feel, sometimes the whole 'tidal-wave of depression' rolls in and ruins the beach party. The worst thing about it for me is that there doesn't seem to be a trigger AT ALL, it just happens some times and just makes everything seem way more sucky than it really is.

Look at it this way, as bad as things may seem at times like this, it could still be worse... You could be an Emo...  :-o

Favorite parts included the subtle, like Dora standing with her hand on the couch, as well as the obvious like hugging Faye.

The new look is seventeen different shades of pure awesome. A small traditionalist part of me is trying to find something to gripe about, but can't think of a damn thing to say. Liking the art too :) especially the front on of Dora in the second panel.
Are their eyes slightly smaller, or am I just used to large eyed Hanners?

Also like the boob-squishy that Dora's giving Faye ;)

Dora's upward eye-roll in panel 2.  Faye's face in panel 3 (hell, Faye's face through the whole strip).  There's a new level of realism here, not only is Jeph trying poses and angles he's never approached (well, not in a finished strip), he's pulling it off with an artistic sensibility that puts the finest comics to shame!

Damn, it's not like the characters weren't real enough already for us to care about them, now he goes and does this!

A while ago some people compared his artwork to anime/manga.  But he's gone waaaay beyond anything like that!

Jeph, if you read these, props to you!  :where's the thumbs up smiley?:

Ok, the direction the art is taking scares me exactly like the album cover to Revolver did when I was a kid (seriously, George Harrison's eyes still creep me out, I was only able to buy the album a few years ago because of them).

Nothing negative about it at all, it's a great leap forward in it's physical subtlety and demonstation of expresiveness, but my uncanny valley threshhold is pretty damn low, i guess.

I've noticed that the character's body proportions are a lot more realistic too. Does this mean that in like 3 weeks the strips will look like Garth Williams drawings?

Wow.  :-o This new thing Jeph is doing with the art is AWESOME! I love the faces and for some reason the shading on Dora's hair, especially in panel 3, is making me look at it again and again.

Plus, not we know what Faye's answer to Sven was!

We all love you Jeph. Not like, creepy love. An appropriate amount of love.

Faye's face just looks amazing in this one. Jeph is really honing in on the subtleties of facial structure. Earlier on in his work, all this characters sort of resembled each other, but now he's really getting a handle on subtle ways to make them be individuals.

The first panel is my favorite, because Faye looks really adorable even while she is being cantankerous.

Compare todays with http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1477 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1477) to see the changes with Dora, or http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1476 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1476) for Faye.

Panel three is my favorite, the tweaks in the art really help sell the expressions.

My favourite part about the new style is how the characters look more real yet they don't lose their charm as is the case in many realist art pieces (or anything in HD). Usually when someone makes the transition into a more true-to-life depiction, it's the newly-revealed flaws which are most prominent, but here it just makes all the characters that much more loveable.

I hope the positive reviews on Jeph's artwork help lift him out of this funk he's been going through. A little nap might help too. We all send you good thoughts, Jeph! Most people I know would say "we send you our prayers", but personally, I'd prefer good thoughts over prayers...

I'm hoping to see many of the other characters in this new format as well; Marty should look good with a few loose strands here and there, and how long has it been since we've last seen Tai? I guess Pintsize and Winslow may not change much (why fix what ain't broke?) and who knows how our favorite indie secret government operative has been doing in the past few months/weeks/days/nanoseconds.

Keep it up, Jeph! We're all rooting for you, and you deserve at the very least some break time to unwind, if not outright relaxing on a beach as comic followers fan you with palm fronds.

First off, I want to say the art for today looks very nice, very detailed and focused.

As for yesterday, that was delightfully unnerving, I can imagine a few visual running gags that could spawn from that, among them being momo-shoggoth or momo with giant hands. That and I could imagine pintsize trying to get the upgrade and meddlign with it.

I think it's more that she's afraid that she won't be able to stop it from leading back to bed if Sven tried, so she's doing what she needs to do to make sure she gets enough distance but afraid that people will think she's just being a bitch.

When she really is being a bitch, she owns it, but when she's not being a bitch, she wants credit for not being a bitch.  She's recognized in the past that she lets the bitchiness go too far.

I dunno if Jeph actually reads the WCT, but I just wanted to say the the art on today's comic is fantastic. Everything just seems to....click. The Poses at the different angles are great, and the subtle facial gestures just seem so natural. I just wanted to say that I was really awed by it.

Probably the best solution would be to claim nano materials. Don't forget this is a firmware update, so it's at a deep level in the AnthroPC. The firmware might be able to configure the nano materials to change shape. Also, Momo said the update "activates latent macrostructural features" which means the option to have digits was there before. With Pintsize, the update clearly didn't work as intended  :-D

Ah, but you're forgetting that Pintsize's chassis is some sort of secret Area 51 military kill-bot (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=147) worth serious coin (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1459) on the black market. Marten has replaced various bits inside the chassis, so Pintsize is most likely a total yum-cha (http://yum-cha.urbanup.com/2341207) special by now, rather than any specific brand.
Title: Re: WCT: September 21-25, 2009

cop is "constable on patrol"

A highly dubious backronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym). Cop is most likely simply an abbreviation of the earlier slang term for the police "copper", which some claim referred to their copper badges, while others claim it referred to their function, to "cop" (grab, take etc. as in "cop a feel") lawbreakers. So "cops" is fine.

Being married is only awesome for the first 5 years.

We've got 4 more years of good QC before every strip turns into Married With Children-esque stuff.

Mine lasted considerably longer, although the first kid did show up in year 5.

Keep in mind that kids provide endless comedic fodder.  Sort of like Pintsize, but without the intentionally evil aspects.  Or the horse porn.

Weren't Meenah and that guy she married trying for kids?  Although in QC time she'd syill be in the "nesting" stage of pregnancy... that's pretty funny too, when it's not your partner...

Tim-tams are pretty much the best thing ever (apart from QC). The problem is that they are all we have in the way of delicious junk food not really copied well anywhere else. I would kill for just half the stuff I saw in Europe or America. Like mini dickmanns... oh yum!

Yeah, well, I didn't want to link to a guest comic, since those are often less memorable in terms of context (since they're not related to the storyline), and since we were talking about whether another forum poster had been here for more or less than a year rather than the exact "one year ago today" (and therefore the goal was to see if they remembered the arc that comic was in being before or after they joined the forums), there you go.

I was astounded by Wil in that first panel. Being that skinny, even in-comic, cannot be healthy!

Concerning Faye here (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1497), I thought she looked much larger than we've typically seen her, even with the coat on. It looks more like a denim coat to me, and typically those are designed to be a bit more fitted, so it would seem odd (to me) for the coat to make her look bigger.

Title: Re: WCT: September 21-25, 2009
Post by: Delirium on 26 Sep 2009, 03:29
Now, see, in the case of ID4, we don't know what the aliens were after, so there could be any number of explanations for why they didn't just bombard us. Maybe they wanted the planet or something on it intact. Maybe they were testing weaponry on us. Maybe they were hunting us for sport, or just wanted to be up close and personal whilst they crushed us like bugs. Maybe they had some kind of code of honor or religious restriction from using orbital weaponry.
Title: Re: WCT: September 21-25, 2009
Post by: Mr_Rose on 26 Sep 2009, 05:37
It's actually quite likely their crazy space-lasers just don't work at orbital distances; that's a lot of atmosphere for a beam to diffuse through. And possibly they'd consider rocks to crude and inaccurate.

I mean, there was clearly a coherent plan there; wipe out the majority of the population and industrial infrastructure whilst leaving the rest of the atmosphere relatively intact. It looks more like an "invade and enslave" gig than straight up genocide.
