FUCK YEAH (http://www.roguefilmschool.com/default.asp)
-
Here I thought it would be about unpaid internships, but it's just seminars. Fucking pansy.
-
Don't go talking shit about Werner Herzog.
Motherfucker is impervious to projectiles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylXqc8TQ15w).
-
"Related, but more practical subjects, will be the art of lockpicking. Traveling on foot. The exhilaration of being shot at unsuccessfully. The athletic side of filmmaking. The creation of your own shooting permits. The neutralization of bureaucracy. Guerrilla tactics. Self reliance."
"Censorship will be enforced. There will be no talk of shamans, of yoga classes, nutritional values, herbal teas, discovering your Boundaries, and Inner Growth."
It is a pity this thing costs fifteen hundred dollars. Otherwise it sounds like it would be absolutely spectacular.
-
If anybody is having doubts about how good this would be, let me remind you that the Nicolas Cage "My Hair is a Bird Your Argument is Invalid" image macro comes from a screencap from a Werner Herzog film (http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/8804/bad-lieutenant-port-of-call-new-orleans/). The film also stars Xzibit.

Something like this shouldn't cost money.
I bet he collects your fifteen hundred dollars before the seminar, then you arrive in the undecorated LAC arts room with a whole bunch of hipsters crying at a note that says, "I told you this wasn't for the faint hearted."
-
I would guess that
a) he is getting the fear of death and wants to pass it on
b) he really needs a bunch of hard cash for some project he's cooking up
Both are probably true. Judging by the narration on Encounters at the End of the World Werner Herzog is pretty much more depressed than ever these days.
-
fuuuuck I would love to do this.
-
Man, I wouldn't. I mean, first off, the only reason I'd be interested in such a thing would be the off chance of really getting to talk to the guy, but even that would be a disaster because I'm shiftless and utterly ordinary whereas he's a very talented crazy person.
-
Yeah but I need some serious help in working on improving my guerrilla film making tactics. Though they've actually worked out pretty well so far, last semester when I shot my improvisation project for my directing class we did a couple places without permits, I even ended up in a police blotter for the "strange, red substance resembling blood" spilled all over a parking garage (it was an accident, one of my crew dropped the bottle of fake blood).

ROGUE PLASTIC BAG (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDBtCb61Sd4&feature=player_embedded#!)
-
Wasn't Herzog rather proud of the fact that he didn't go to film school?
Also, Aguirre, the Wrath of God is a seriously good movie. And true to the director's 'rogue' nature was also shot on a stolen camera.
-
i almost started watching that plastic bag video and then i just watched werner herzog get shot in the gut and then call it "not a significant bullet"

First of all, you could hardly call the school I go to a film school, since its just a really shitty degree from a middling state school in Maryland.
Second, while I agree that you don't need to go to film school to make movies, all you need to do is watch movies all your life and have really good instincts and shit like Herzog has, but I'm not Werner Herzog, and my parents would disown me if I wasn't going to school for something.
Also I really don't care what the man thinks about school, if he's teaching a seminar then he's being a bit of a hypocrite anyway, even if he's not talking about traditional Hollywood film-making, which our program doesn't really focus on since its a shitty underfunded program that no one has ever graduated from that's been of note.
-
I don't know shit about shit but I think Buttfranklin's point might have been that he's a bit of a hypocrite to teach a seminar if he didn't go to film school.
I spent a year or so doing sporadic film classes; all I got out of it was officially-sanctioned use of a small classroom as a private office for myself and my friends. It was a good deal.

Waaaaaaank. You don't need a degree to know shit. 'specially not in the arts.

Well, not that he's a hypocrite to teach it because he didn't go to film school, just that it's an interesting choice to do a film school thingie when he himself is proud of the fact that he didn't go to a film school. Not necessarily hypocritical. If I were a super duper film director I would gladly teach a film seminar and teach those young 'uns and up and comers a thing or a thang about film making that I learned over my lustrous career, even if I didn't go to film school.
And besides, Herzog doesn't give a shit if he's a hypocrite or not, he makes good movies.

Sorry about that, was having a really bad day, thought you were pokin' fun at me for going to film school when Herzog didn't because of the placement of the post and I was open to attack someone.
Also that bag short was okay, but like, nothin' revolutionary. Like way to steal the story from Brave little Toaster ya hack, /sarcasm.
-
The soundtrack was pretty bad, I guess it fit with the sentimental script but the effect was to push it thoroughly into corny territory. That last line really made me cringe. A shame really, I liked the stuff about the vortex and Herzog is an excellent narrator.

Really? I thought the last line was quite good since it summarized very well what the entire short movie was about. That is, a look at the nature of immortality and longing and that: isn't it quite better to live your usefulness and when that time is over to simply die, rather than live the rest of your long, long existence wishing to be useful again but will never be? The entire movie is about the plastic bag trying to find happiness (through a purpose) after its original purpose is ended. He does this by falling in love with another plastic bag, admiring the world, looking for the vortex, and the admiring all the monsters when it has nowhere else to go, but its thoughts keep going back to its 'maker' and its true place. To cringe at the last line is to cringe at the whole story, I think. I mean, if you don't like the story, that's fine. But you can't like the story and cringe at the last line, IMO.
And yeah, Herzog is a good narrator.

S'all cool, brochacho.

The story is pretty cringeworthy. But even if it wasn't having "I wish you had created me so that I could die" as your last line is still poor writing. It's far too blunt, it screams out the fact that it's the last line of the film and here is our very obvious point in case you somehow missed it. I don't mind a little lack of subtlety, but what with the music as well I was getting tired of being battered around the head by mawkishness by the time that line rolled around.

I didn't cringe once watching it. I rather enjoyed the philosophical musings of a plastic bag floating around, voiced by the craziest movie director on our planet, looking at things a religious plastic bag would. Mawkish writing? Yeah. It was. Was the point of it kitsch? Yes. But was the entire movie kitsch (which is what I think you think)? No, I don't think so, because I can enjoy a re-examination of something so trite as immortality and environmentalism if it's got Herzog-wacky-pants and some pretty entertaining cinematography. That in of itself isn't trite or worthless. And I think the next time I bag my groceries from the grocery store I'll think of this movie.
If the movie makers failed to engage you, that's fine. That's the movie makers' problem, their failure.
But they sure succeeded with me. I think I'm going to rent Fitzcarraldo.
-
I wouldn't say kitsch. I like kitsch. Worthless is too harsh too, it's not like they didn't have any ideas. Great narration and I liked the religious element but I felt they could have pushed that into more interesting territory. The vortex was going places, the maker bit not so much. I wasn't big on the cinematography either though, I found that shallow. I doubt that was accidental but it didn't go anywhere interesting for me.
I'm not sure I'd call it a failure on their part though. I don't know what they were trying to do, for all I know my reaction was exactly what they were hoping for or they could just not care what the audience thinks.
Fitzcarraldo is banging. I love Herzog's opinion of the jungle during filming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xQyQnXrLb0&feature=related).

Son of a fucking bitch. I wish I had me some money. And what's worse, Herzog was at CU with Ebert doing a shot-by-shot analysis of Aguirre about a month ago and I had to work.
Maybe I oughtta just get off my ass and make a movie.
