Title: WCT: September 27-October 2, 2009
Post by: raoullefere on 27 Sep 2009, 19:26
This can't be right. I'm never first.

Anyway, I'm torn. I hope Angus is going to show Marigold that these girls are not better looking than she, but I fear he's just a sex-crazed twenty-something.

As for me, I wish I could actually hear the tone of Angus's voice as he says that because it could be read two ways - either he is flustered at having to say it again because he does not believe it, or he really does and does not understand why she is asking again.

I thought about making the thread 10 minutes ago but was afraid I would do it wrong. What would I have done to mess it up? Beats me.

And Angus is basically a professional liar. I don't see him feeling weird about telling the same lie twice. Then again, he doesn't usually have to lie to people he gives a crap about.

Ah yes, the eternal paradox: How do the shy asocial nerdy types find girlfriends/boyfriends?

Besides, you know, going to that other place, um, "out" side.

Is it wrong that what stood out the most to me from today's comic was that Angus was reading Jim Butcher? That is awesome.

If it's wrong, I don't want to be right.
When I saw that, I felt a little glimmer of respect for Angus.

Creepy masochist or not, he has damn good taste in literature.

Great way to boost her ego Angus.

Still, ya gotta like the fact that he didn't back away from his words about her being pretty.

Yes, I am that big a nerd.

PS: Is it just me or does "Attempted Art" sound like a half-decent band name? If so i call dibs...

Err... WHAT ???

Nerd girls who post slutty pictures ?!?!?!?

Whats next ?

Right wing republicans who understand economics ?

Boxers who work as university professors ?

Heroin addicts who win nobel prizes ?

The point of being a nerd is having INTELLIGENCE.

Well see this is just you jumping to the wrong conclusion. You assume that these girls are nerds because they play WoW, but actually they only play WoW because they know nerds play WoW. So they know at least some of them will be desperate losers who will fawn over slutty pictures and giggling and flirting. Nevermind the fact that these women only flirt with the guys because they know none of them know where they live.

All kinds of nerdy things attract these kinds of women eventually. Surely you've seen some of the pictures online of women in way too small tops who are cheering at an unseen game off-camera, controller in hand? You know, those pictures where you can clearly see the Xbox doesn't have the power cord attached?

Although this is not much of a problem these days because these people have found their niche in the world of desperately seeking attention from the wonderful television genre of reality television. Because as we all know, fame equals happiness. Just ask Russell Crowe. Or David Hasselhoff. Or Christian Bale. Or Tom Cruise.

Marigold didn't think much of their skills, so perhaps their intelligence is limited as well. They could be non-nerds slumming in a nerd activity.

Exactly!  Slumming.

On the other hand, I tend to think Angus is going somewhere with this, not just being a jerk.  But then again, Marigold's been living with him for a while, so she probably knows him better.

BTW, I love the blush when she asks him if he meant his previous statement.  She's so damn... young for someone her age!  But that's a different thread...

Boxers who work as university professors... well, at least part time. Vitali Klitschko (Ph.D in Sports Medicine) and a trained teacher (before he began boxing), Wladimir Klitschko, PH.D in Sports Science, too, a teacher.

Heroin Addicts who win nobel prizes? Ernest Hemmingway.  (according to the medical report of the Mayo Clinic, listed in Los Angeles Times, January 11,1961)

Almost everyone I know who plays WoW is a girl. The whole "no girls play video-games" shtick is really getting old, since all of my female friends (and myself) are evidence to the contrary, and there's many a study to prove that ladies enjoy games, even just casual games: http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2009/07/01/female-gamers-now-number-28-thanks-largely-to-wii-says-new-study.htm (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2009/07/01/female-gamers-now-number-28-thanks-largely-to-wii-says-new-study.htm)

I liked this strip, it was funny. I really didn't like Marigold's character for a while because I felt like she was an unfunny stereotype, but I'm liking the arcs involving her more now that there's some more character development to go on.

Weird no one has mentioned this, but I found Angus's reaction to Marigold's query very Faye-esque. Faye tends to diffuse difficult  or uncomfortable situations by being a smart aleck and a bit of a jerk. Apparently Angus does too. For some reason, this amuses me and makes me think they are more alike than we've previously seen.

Oh and in response to the people arguing that nerds wouldn't do something as stupid as post slutty pictures of themselves on the forums... uh I know a lot of nerds. There is a WORLD of difference between book intellect and social intellect. You can be very smart and still post half naked pictures of yourself online to attract boys. I know a guy who is morbidly obese and lives in smelly squalor and he games all day long and when he isn't gaming, he's talking about gaming. He is forever meeting girls who post slutty pics and who'll cyber in character. Not only does he date them online, they frequently fly to where he lives and move in with him without having met him. So the ability to game and spout stats and jargon like DPS does not make you brilliant at making life choices.

Wasn't it Daffy Duck who said "You're despicable?".

Anyway, Angus is STILL a liar.  Now, if Marigold had more pride in her "intelligence," she'd have no need for low self-esteem.  Beauty is SO overrated, and it's not the only thing in the world that can make a person attractive.  Enough confidence and charisma can make an ugly person EXTREMELY desirable; fortunately for Marigold, confidence and charisma can be learned.  Besides, I bet she actually cleans up pretty nice.  A little make-up, the right hair style...

...But I hope she doesn't.  I like ugly!Marigold.  Not everyone in the world can be beautiful, and her lack of beauty endears her to me (plus, it makes her more interesting to look at).

It's true that the Girls Don't Game thing is as stupid as Girls Don't Like Sci-Fi, Ever (Sidebar: Russell T. Davies once came out with that one. And yes, he was completely serious. Way to be in touch with your fanbase, RTD); but the most likely reason that everyone you know who plays Wow is a girl is because you are a girl. Just like most of my bloggy friends are girls, because I am a girl. It just happens that way.

What the hell is it with people thinking Marigold is ugly? I think she's very pretty. I've said before that her face is my favorite of all the characters. She's got a great face and she's curvy. She isn't the least bit ugly.

Also, a women can be proud of their intelligence and confident in their abilities in certain areas of their lives and not be at all confident in their femininity or ability to attract a mate. Happens all the gd time!

Well, all I can say is that online gaming's come a long way from ye olde MUDD, when most female characters turned out to be played by hormone-crazed teen-aged boys. Okay, the 'hormone-crazed' part is an assumption, but not a wholly invalid one.

I concur, madness. All the intelligence in the world cannot necessary help one in social situations. For that, the conventions behind such would have to make sense. I, for one, have rarely found this to be the case.

It's also the running gag on Bones, so I must be right.

I was wondering this too. Marigold may not be in the blonde bombshell/sulty brunette/sexy redhead imagery that mainstream culture tells us is "the only pretty", but that doesn't mean that real people (i.e. people not in show biz/marketing) wouldn't find her to be pretty. It's entirely possible Angus actually does think she's pretty, which leads me to this...

Anyway, Angus is STILL a liar.

Marigold isn't pretty because she has bad skin.  Perhaps some people think that zits are pretty.  I am not one of these people.

Her skin might get better in the future.  She might get in shape. She might do something with her hair.  But as she is right now, she is not pretty.  She's not hideous, but she's definitely not beautiful.

Frankly, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a regular looking person. :/  The world is filled with them.

Nerd =/= intelligent, and intelligent =/= immune to making a fool of oneself.

As for stereotypes about heroin users being stupid (not touching it beyond disagreement at the universal) and boxers being university lecturers - one of the fighters I most admire from our kickboxing club is a physics lecturer. Which both amuses and pleases me.  :-D

Marigold's problem isn't her looks. It's her lack of social skills and experience. And there's no other way to fix that lack but to actually put down the computer keyboard and mouse and (*GASP*) step outside every now and then.

In other words, she needs more nights out with the gang like the one she recently had. Such outings also stand a good chance of solving her lack of boyfriend problem. Unless she just hooks up with Angus, but that would probably have already happened if it were going to.

Exactly!  That's not lying (although it's not exactly honest, either).  And strawman is his profession, not necessarily what he does in his personal life.  As my grandfather was known to say, "Eh (*shrug*) - it's a living!"

Before all the pretty/ugly, intelligent/nerdly debates, someone mentioned that Angus was acting like Faye, defusing the situation with humor/snarkiness (that's a very thin line between those two words!).  That's how he is, it's how he started with Faye when first introduced as "argument guy".

Witty Banter.  It works, people!  Now quit fighting with each other about personal opinions, and lets hear some!

I don't play the game, or any other MMORPG, so all WoW "humour" flies straight past me. I have to guess  :?  what pally, mobs, tank, DPS, aggro etc. mean from the context, or look them up on-line, which kind of sucks the life out of the jokes. The on-line social life of WoW is easier to understand since it seems to be just a subset of general internet drama. Dark Elf porn would just be Rule 34 in action for example.

I'm not sure where Jeph is going at the moment, but the art's good so I guess I'll just hang on for the ride.

Sort of like an actor who plays a bumbling person in order to tell a story? Or a politician who plays up the folksy down home charm (oh yeah, you betcha Joe Sixpack)? I guess what I'm getting at is that lying is a pretty much a given in most fields. I'm a medical receptionist and trust me when I say, I lie through my teeth all day long. "Oh it's no problem... it happens to the best of us... I hope you feel better... the doctor is running late because of an emergency... I'm here to help" lies lies lies. I'm there because they pay me and I probably hate your guts and the doctor is running late because he's a lazy slug who takes long lunches and leave your ass waiting.

Lawyers lie. We consistently vote them for president. Doctors lie and tell you it won't hurt much when they know it will. Everyone who has ever sold you something has probably lied to you a little bit. Waitresses lie and pretend to give a rats ass about what you order and how your day has gone, because they want your money.  If you based your trust on someone's job, you wouldn't trust anyone. With the exception of perky people persons, most everyone who works in customer service and wishes you a good day lies to you because  honestly... they don't give a crap if you have a nice day.

Yes I'm a raging cynic today, but lying in your job to make money is not the same as being a lousy person. A lot of people get paid to lie.

I didn't say she was beautiful, but she is pretty. She's got a few spots, they come and go! It's not like she has serious acne.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think that quite a few regular looking people are very pretty and some people who look beautiful when they're all dolled up look quite 'regular' without all that stuff on.

The whole dynamic between Marigold and Angus has really made me like him. At first I was sorta iffy/neutral but the last few strips he has been in has definitely caused me to warm up to him.

Also, I agree with the people who think Marigold is pretty. She has a little bit of acne but it's not a huge problem or anything, she's curvy but by no means fat and I really don't see what's wrong with her hair. I mean, it's not really anything special but I don't think it looks bad either.

I agree - Marigold's got plenty to work with, but she does nothing with it.  Better figure than Faye's, definitely.  Needs to do some skin care, could try a different hairstyle.

She _isn't_ on the high side of pretty.  But she sure as hell isn't ugly.  She strikes me as a pretty average sort of girl with an extreme unworldliness and lack of knowledge about certain things (ie. hygiene) who has reacted to not being classically gorgeous by shutting out all of the looks area, thus not allowing herself to be as nice as she could be.

Angus' relationship with her...hard to say.  To a degree he seems to have accepted Marigold as the way she is - negatives and all - and not pushed her out of the protective hole she's crawled into.  But that isn't necessarily the best thing for her, as shown by her enjoyment of her night out courtesy of Dora & co.

Oh definitely lying is a given in most professions, I think people are overthinking it because they cannot hear the words being said, they can only read them. Makes you wonder whether some of the lies spill over into his personal life and how he might feel about that.

Certainly right now it seems quite harmless and I think it is great. But things can get very distorted by those with low self esteem, and somehow I do not think Angus would want Marigold to interpret his compliments as him being interested in her or for her to become a big slutbag.

Angus comes through! Cheers to him for that, and for not calling it "Fat-girl angle shot."

On the flip side, I don't know how to take Marigold's becoming a WoWslut. I suppose it's to be expected. One can't detest another that much without secretly wanting to be them, and, as has been remarked, she lacks the self-awareness to see that.

Oh, and I think that as long as Marigold keeps referring to Angus as a jerk, she's probably not going to 'fall' for him, for the same reason as stated above. To her, I imagine a jerk is a jerk.

We should go a bit easy on Marigold.  She's discovered the "slutty babes" horrible secret, and if she experiments a bit, so what?  Now if she posts those pictures it's a different story.

Just keep her away from Sven.  His willpower would probably cave and we'd get a Faye/Marigold catfight...ah shit.

If there's one thing I've learned already, it's that if you randomly pick any two characters some pathetic shmuck is going to have a sexual fantasy about them.

I think if that happens, Sven will have more to worry about than Marigold, in that if he treated her like he treated Faye, he'd have Dora, Faye, and (OMG) HANNERS  to deal with (probably Marten and Angus too).

Oh, come on. You know she's going to, unless she chickens out. I'll admit, though, that's a distinct possibility. I'll add that, unlikely as Sven and Marigold getting together is, Sven would be in far more danger from Faye than Marigold.

It's not the end of the world if Marigold wants to pose for photos from deceptive angles. Maybe she'll start to actually see herself as attractive. At least she's thinking about it. It's a sign of major depression when you don't want to bath or pay attention to her appearance. I know it seems like something negative but it could actually signal a sort of emotional growth spurt for Marigold.

[/Pollyanna-esque Optimism]

If you've ever watched America's Top Model, you'll realize that posing to hide flaws is not unusual. Models work what they've got and photogs choose the best angles to capture that. What they can't fake, they airbrush out. Even out in public most celeb females have a specific pose and walk that enhances their beauty for photographs. Love her or hate her, but Paris Hilton knows how to work the best side of her face and how to make her body look five pounds leaner by standing a certain way. It's so hypocritical to bag on women (and it seems to generally be fat/chunky women) for attempting to work around something that they are constantly told is shameful and ugly. The real fear stems from from guys who are terrified they'd be attracted to a fatty. Oh noes!

I thought it was funny that she's socially inexperienced enough not to have turned off the shutter sound on the digicam before taking the pics.  Of course, Angus still would've known what she was doing...

If there's one thing I taught my girls, it's how to deceive effectively.

I still catch them in their lies, that's a personality issue!  But they're better at not leaving so much damn evidence lying around!

When she say's "you're a jerk", I hear my oldest saying (in her whiniest tones for comedic effect) "Daaad, shut Uuup"!

It is noteworthy that we can tell so much about the characters from so little input.

A few lines of ink and some coloring, and we know what they look like. A few panels of dialog, and we know something about their personalities.

Stepping back and thinking about it, it's amazing how much an artist can accomplish with so little. Web comics may qualify as a minimalist art form.

Changing the subject, am I weird, or was today's comic funny from the beginning? Something about a guy critiquing sleazy photos to a girl tickled me.

Damn, should not care so much.

Damn, I shouldn't be so harsh...especially not while running off to work.  Fetish is one thing, 50 page fanfics are another.  Consider it a bit of proof via statistical sampling.

I actually envision it a bit like the long fight scene in They Live.  Afterwards they team up & run out of bubblegum.

As for stupidity/experience, I've always heard it as "Experience is what you have after you've done something stupid, and what you wish you had before."

What if Momo is the digicam?  That side of the conversation could be interesting..."Fried computer and now I have to see this!?!?  MySpace/Facebook angle _and_ bad lighting!?!?"  I cringe everytime I see that style of picture.  It's like the cheap horror section of erotica.

I actually had almost exactly that sentence in my original post before I previewed it and pruned it a little!

And yet, "WoW sluts" only brings up 225 image hits in Google, with one or two at best being tenuously relevant. I don't think Google is anywhere as close to achieving the "semantic web" as they would like. Why the hell would searching for "WoW sluts" return images labelled "Flintstone sex" and "Britney Spears Nipple" (which I assume is about the troubled chanteuse, not a bizarre javelin accident).

Never.  Actually, I was often praised for  my beauty.

I've never cared for being complimented on my looks.  I have no control over them, after all... I was just lucky.  I can say with with no uncertainty that I'd rather be really smart or really talented instead.  People like Marigold are the TRUE lucky ones... if only they'd realize it!

Let's see how long it takes until one of those shots winds up as her Twitter picture.

Seems like most of her insecurities can be solved by simply taking care of herself. Regular showering along with diet and exercise would help a lot. :\ Didn't one strip ages ago talk about how Raven was a lot heavier in college, but started feeling better about herself (and started getting more attention) after she worked at losing weight? Sounds like these two need to meet.

As I recall, Jeph has made a point of showing us that Marigold is not nearly as self-aware as most of the rest of the cast. She wouldn't notice the hypocrisy unless it was pointed out and, even then, probably wouldn't change her behaviour much because it doesn't count if it's her...

Realistic?  How do people breathe through such tiny little things?

As much as I like the new Hannelore, I don't find the nose realistic.
The head to body proportion is also good, except for her second panel.  I think cartoon characters "read" better if their heads are a little larger than "real world" proportions relative to the body.

Carl-E, I got that impression from him, too, although I dislike Pintsize, so I felt mild schadenfreude about it.  Perhaps he can take up gardening.  After all, instead of just having a green thumb, he has four of them!

Bicostp, there are lots of women who are gorgeous and have great hygiene, but who are still unconfident in their own skin.  They want to lose 5 pounds, get a nose job, get a boob job, if their hair is curly, they want it to be straight and vice versa, etc.  Looking attractive, and having people respond to that, helps, but a lot of it is the way *they* perceive themselves.  Self-esteem involves more than just looks, and I'm mostly happy with myself in that area, but it helps to have at least one person who makes you feel luscious!

I have some similarities to Marigold, but without the hygiene and messy room issues.  I used to be a gamer chick on a MUDD and other things (I've been resisting WOW).  We have similar facial structure, colouring, and hair length/general cut.  I used to do some modelling, and several friends who are amateur photographers have taken photos of me for their classes or portfolios.  The people who are saying she could clean up nicely are right.  Normally, I think of myself as cute, rather than pretty/gorgeous, but most photographers (even the DMV) can make me look elegant and exotic!  A little makeup, carrying yourself the right way, stuff like that makes a huge difference.

@Lyrical: I didn't mean to sound like "oh well just do this and this and your problems are over you fat smelly lazyass". I meant that if she feels bad about those factors, but tried to do something about them, she might feel better about herself. I know it worked for me: after high school I gained weight because I was still eating like a teenager (too much, all the time), basically did nothing but sit at the computer all day (no regular gym class to burn off all those fries), and I felt like crap about it. I watched what I ate and started exercising more, lost close to 30 pounds, got back to where I was, and I'm glad I did it. :-) (Woo relatable character writing woo)

Yes, strip 562.

Come to think of it, Raven's a gamer (can't find the strip offhand, but she had a D&D partner come into the shop once). Raven also has pimples (#703).

Marigold might have a reflexive negative reaction to Raven but if she got over that they would find things in common. I like the idea of them meeting.

Just popping in to be a dick and point out that Jeph misused "Nonplussed" in the title.  I think he was using it to mean "unimpressed" whereas it really means:

non·plus  (nn-pls)
tr.v.
To put at a loss as to what to think, say, or do; bewilder.
n.
A state of perplexity, confusion, or bewilderment.
From Dictionary.com

...which is kind of the opposite response that Faye and co. gave Pintsize.
Unless he was using the word in reference to the common misperception of its meaning...but somehow I don't think so.

Well, certainly Angus has his nicer side.

But unless there's some existing dynamic to his interactions with Marigold that we're not privy to, he's still a colossal jerk about women generally.  If he and Faye continue to interact, she's gonna need the hedge clippers (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1497).

I love the horrified expression on Marigold's face in the last panel. It's like a combo of panic and embarrassment. Very nicely done! The head looks kind of weird though ... I don't know, like maybe it should be farther back or at an angle ... maybe both? I'm not sure. I'm not that good with body proportions and positions, but something about her head it and shoulder area is bugging me.

And again I say ... Angus: YAY!

Am I just weird about chicks in glasses, or does Marigold really look better with them than without them?

I think Angus approaches people as they need to be approached. Argument and persistence with Faye, agreement with Marten, support with Marigold.

Marigold is acting very, very human. One of the reasons Jeph's characters are so engaging is that they're so psychologically realistic.

Kugai, I generally don't much like Angus, but I agree he's been pretty nice to her in this story arc.   He's been doing better with Faye as well since after the sledding party, too.

Bicostp, I agree that that would help, though she's getting a lot better already.  Since the "awkward zone" moment with Hanners and Momo promising Marten that she'd be groomed for the trip to the bar, she seems to be taking better care of herself (or at least nobody has commented negatively about it).  Presumably Momo is reminding her when needed.  Also, since the initial cleaning, she's been keeping her room clean, instead of letting it turn back into a pig sty.  Granted, in this particular comic, the bed isn't made (but she's *in* it), and there's a drink on the dresser.

Dora kind of got Faye on track with going to the gym, and she knows enough about hair/fashion/skin care/etc. that she probably would be willing to kind of take Marigold under her wing.  Even if Marigold wants to make all of those changes, she's probably pretty overwhelmed about where to start.  Just showering every day isn't going to be enough right now.  She probably needs some kind of acne medication (even just OTC topical cream), astringent, etc.  Hanners would probably be willing to help her, but I don't think she could handle making *hands-on* changes.

Aaaaah!  Yer all a bunch of friggin' SHIPPERS!!

He's kidding around, and she's laughing way too hard for this to go there.

But I think (and I think others here would agree) that we need a little more backstory on Angus & Marigold.  We know he's been living in the area for a while, bugging Faye at the coffee shop.  And we know Marigold just moved in recently...

I'm thinking Angus had an extra room, maybe an earlier roomate moved out.  And Marigold is a "friend of a friend" or something (god forbid, she may even be a cousin or other distant relation) who's renting it out.  I rented a house in college for 3 years, and was constantly shuffling through an odd cast of roomates who needed a place, and then wound up moving in with their significant others.  It ended when they were all paired up, and I moved in with mine...

Hard to keep things 'classy' with He-man references.

Akima, 'Greyskull" is a reference to the mental condition that makes one come up with character names like Man-at-Arms, Beast-man, Ram-man, Man-E-Faces, Mer-Man, and Mantenna. And for variety, Mekaneck, Evil-Lynn, and Fisto. My god, Fisto. You can get it by watching more than ten episodes of the series, or ten minutes of the wretched movie.

Well they seem to have a pretty playful/comfortable relationship, judging by Marigold's facial expression in the last panel. So I would guess that if they haven't been living together very long, then they must have some kind of a history/friendship.

At this point, I think I'll probably have to rescind my earlier Angus-is-a-jerk response, in favor of the idea that they're some kind of blood relations.

I can't imagine Marigold ever being comfortable enough with a strange guy to move in with him.  This has to be someone she knew before.  Siblings, cousins, or something... and one suspects she landed there after her parents kicked her out.

Does make me wonder if, or whether, she has a job, and if she doesn't, who's paying her WoW bill.  I'm not going to automatically classify her as jobless - this strip includes a wide variety of idiosyncratic professions (Angus is a professional strawman, for heck's sake - who ever heard of such a thing?) and that almost certainly includes something obscure that doesn't require you to leave the house.  I'm not in a hurry to insist on finding out, though...

Who was it who suggested that Marigold murdered her parents and is living off the insurance money?

Whenever Marigold moved in, she had had enough stuff for long enough to accumulate at least one rat. One could conclude that she moved with the rat, or that Momo-tan is the one who just moved in, or that Jeph meant the whole thing as a joke and hasn't committed to a backstory.

I agree with the suggestion that Marigold wouldn't 'just move in with' a guy she didn't know, and that she and Angus have some form of history. Of course, that just raises more questions:

1) What if its the other way around, and marigold was there first?
2) What exactly is thier 'history'? On one hand, theres the long term friends and/or cousins direction. On the other hand theres vast amounts of shipper fodder that i wont go into (they have enough fuel for thier fantasies as it is)
3) Err... Why is the sky blue? (ok, so maybe it doesn't raise all that many questions after all)...

I had thought maybe it was some sort of WoW reference. We used to call players who logged on, went to a certain area and killed the Mob there until they had enough money for a week's rent "rent farmers."

The QC universe has different rules from ours, so it may not be possible to extrapolate from our experiences.

QC has characters with nerdish traits, but Marigeek is the only out-and-out nerd of the bunch.

We do have a former D&D player dating someone who reads Neal Stephenson, and a compulsive reader dating a socially inept poet, but that's as close as the QC universe has come to nerd-on-nerd action.

Regardless of how many times the word "fallacy" is used, all I have gathered from this is that we are almost all nerds here, myself included.

Uh, what? Since when? Nerds date nerds. My relationship attests to that.

Nerd love is the purest love of all.  My boyfriend and I are both anime nerds.  It's really fun.
A beacon of hope!

Nerd or non-nerd as partner, Marigold is in for a lousy relationship if she doesn't fix the self-esteem problem first.

Oh please don't be a postmodern philosopher (http://www.calamitiesofnature.com/archive/?c=272).

I'm not.  I'm a mathematician.  I can actually understand Gödel's proof!

Well, at least I could in grad school.

And thanks you for that comic - it's going up on my office door today!

Should probably point out that physics is the easiest of the natural science majors.  In the words of Someone Overheard on the Bus, it's "applied common sense."  If you have a basic grasp of mathematics, at least first-year physics will come easily, and the rest won't be especially hard if you've got even Raven's level of intelligence.  (Overprivileged Midwestern transfers, fuck off; you will fail.)
