Peel sessions are basically the shit. So this is the thread where you can talk about your favourite John Peel sessions! Why do you like them? How do they compare to the original recordings? Maybe there is an interesting story or bit of trivia about the particular session. You might even post a link to download the session if you are so inclined.
I am quite fond of the Slits' Peel sessions. I believe there are three separate sessions included. I like how easy it is to trace their progress from the glorious amateurism of their first songs to the sort of fractured dub shit to the more world music inspired stuff. I also like how they retained the same sort of nervous punk energy throughout their progress. What a spectacular band.

What's your favourite John Peel session?

I have a huge amount of love for Gringo On Peel. It was a CD sent out as part of the Gringo records singles club and includes sessions by various Gringo bands like Bilge Pump and some a recording of Wolves! (Of Greece) from something compered by Peel for his show. One of the reasons I love it so much is because it isn't a proper release, it was obviously either taken from the radio or Gringo got sent a recording of them from the BBC so there's Peel talking between the tracks about things like the NME calling Bilge Pump unlistenable guff (which is apparently only technically true). I still really miss the sound of Peel's voice. The other reason I'm so enamoured with it is that when it came out the only Bilge Pump I had was their album Let Me Breathe, which is a real let down on the production side. Maida Vale doesn't disappoint and their sessions sound great.
I put it up in the mediafire thread ages ago, it might still be there.

The Gang of Four Peel Sessions are pretty brilliant. The guitar tone on these songs is essentially perfect.

I really like the Belle & Sebastian Peel Christmas Party.

I actually have been meaning to start it since you uploaded those Fugazi sessions awhile ago. So you can pat yourself on the back!
Also, anyone who doesn't have those Gang of Four sessions has not lived a meaningful life.
-
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Fall sessions yet. I managed to get that massive 6CD compilation of them for a tenner last month and the early sessions are brilliant.
Pavement also have some really great Peel sessions.

I really like the Belle & Sebastian Peel Christmas Party.
I might upload this later.
-
I like the godspeed one even if its just cause they played Steve Reich on it.
-
I'm fond of the Therapy? ones. But then, I'm fond of early Therapy?

I'm fond of the Therapy? ones. But then, I'm fond of early Therapy?
This sentence sounded fucked up in my head
-
I don't see why, it sounds like perfect Australian inflection to me. Actually, not quite, hang on:
I'm fond of the Therapy ones? But then, I'm fond of early Therapy?
Oh yeah, now you're talking Neighbours.
-
Uhm ...
Yeah? that's what I meant?
-
That's the spirit. Just put a question mark at the end of every non-inquisitive statement and you'll fit right in if you should ever visit, say, the western suburbs of Sydney.
-
And what do you do with inquisitive statements?
-
Australians don't ask, we tell.
-
But it sounds like we're asking. You with me?
-
I always wondered why many of the Australian posters here add questions marks where they often don't belong. I always thought it gave the sentences a sort of condescending edge a lot of the time. Is that a wrong interpretation?
-
Yes. The question mark is meant to convey a near-crippling lack of national self-confidence.
-
Wait, what?

Are your ideas about Australia's self-esteem up to date?
-
Oh don't get me wrong, when it comes to being Australian we're as confident as you can get. There's no other country on earth that does being Australia better than Australia does. It's just when we look overseas, and see all those books all the other countries keep writing, and all those movies they keep making, and all the laws they keep passing, and all the sporting trophies they keep winning back from us . . .?

Oh Japan.
You are rad Japan! You are rad
