script done, it looks like we might finally get to meet a much-speculated-about character sometime soon (unless I change my mind)about 2 hours ago from Tweetie
Marten's father? Hannelore's father? Who else could it be?
-
Jesus?
-
Faye's dad returns to Earth to rid the world of his misfit progeny in the action-packed epic QUESTIONABLE CONTENT: ENDGAME.
-
Tai appears to be heavier in this style.
-
Everybody does, actually. Except for Faye, she looks about the same.
-
I am liking Jeph's new work schedule. Now I get to enjoy QC over breakfast, instead of having to wait until lunchtime at work.
-
Marten's shoulders seem to be broader.
-
I disagree, Tai doesn't look too heavy.
-
"Heavier" doesn't necessarily mean "too heavy".
(does it?)
-
She doesn't look heavier
-
She does look a little, um, bigger? is that the best work? Meh, to tired to think. I'm sceptical about it, maybe in a few more strips (asuming her current run lasts that long). Going by the Twitter, Jeph's VERY happy with her tho, and hey, its his work so whatever...
Odly enough, i was out drinking on saturday night, and i actually met a girl that reminded me of Tai (right down to the lesbian part), she was wearing a spongebob tee... hee hee hee... spongebob...
-
Marten, then, apparently took his mom's side in the divorce. We can gather that she got custody.
That must have been a really interesting court battle. Either the judge was enlightened enough to realize a sex worker could be a fine mother, or else Henry disqualified himself somehow. In other words, either Veronica won or Henry lost. And this with her record already including a brush with Child Protective Services.
I have trouble imagining what Henry will be like. It's easy to think of a stereotype, but Jeph will probably do something surprising and funny.
-
Maybe he will be as spineless as his son
-
One of the extremely rare occasions where the title made me laugh before I read the comic.
-
i miss the larger, kinda anime-ish eyes.
I'm glad that jeph likes what he's doing with the art (not sarcastically) but making the faces less cartoony gives me some uncanny-valley vibes.
-
I understand that this is a comic, but since this is about human beings acting (mostly) like human beings, having the characters looking like human beings shouldn't drag this into the uncanny valley.
-
Um to be honest ...
I definitely dont like how massive Tai looks in panel 2.
And the cat ears arent drawn very nicely either. Meaning they look really awful when Tai is seen from the side, especially in panel 3.
-
I don't know if this is another new art technique Jeph's added, but I can't recall ever seeing motion lines in QC before today (the circular arrow under Tai's hand in panel 2 as she mimes the turntable action).
[Cue a bunch of posts with links back to previous examples proving that I am an unobservant dolt.]

Well, motion lines are not unheard of, I can recall quite some butt-slappings that were put in motion. We haven't seen those in a while, though. But I like it. Tai would look really cool as a DJ. Pix plix!
Although I did notice something different about Tai. It's distinctly un-Tai-ish. Might be the shape of her head, like with the other characters. Her figure looks all right, it's not that. She's certainly bigger, but that's because she was unrealistically skinny before. But damn - Marten's shoulders look huuuge in that last panel.
-
Marten looks to me not so much larger today (though he has been looking hunkier of late) as more padded - as in having a jumper under his hoodie, which we can see, and which he doesn't normally wear. Is the weather still cold out in QC land, do you think?
-

She has a less boyish figure.

Seeing as QC land is a fictionalized Northampton, Massachusetts, I'd say it's just getting cold out-not so much "still" cold out. Also, as the comic takes place in the good old U.S. of A., it would be kind of odd for Marten to be wearing a 'jumper' unless Dora and Tai finally talked him into some gender-bending experimentation.
edit: I've just realized that almost all of my posts here are (to some degree) about the varying pronunciation and meaning of words across cultures.
-
I understand that this is a comic, but since this is about human beings acting (mostly) like human beings, having the characters looking like human beings shouldn't drag this into the uncanny valley.
Shrug. i guess its mainly that throughout all the changes in the art, the characters have generally had disproportionately large eyes.
hanners and tai particularly, were very very expressive with their eyes.
also, its the first time i've not liked a change in the art, of which there have been many, so i'm probably going to have to whine about it a bit.
-
Cue all the discussions on the changing artstyle.
Me, I was going to comment on the mindless "Buy Dad a tie for Father's Day" thing. Hopefully, my lads go with the less mindless, "Buy Dad a beer he hasn't had before." when the time comes - Much more thoughtful
-
Alternate punchline for 10/12 comic:
"The traditional Father's day present is also a corset."
-
Marten has a new hoodie, and it's NOT black! (it's dark gray.)

A: It doesn't take place in real time. The whole strip's run has only been 2-3 years so far. (Don't ask about the music. Indie bands are just busy little bees in QC-world.)
B: Um...jumper is a rather British word for "sweater"...what else would it mean?
-
Tai does look like she's gained the Freshman Fifteen.
Angle on Martin does meke his shoulders broader, but he does literally shoulder everyone's problems and hold the gang together in more than one way.
On an Aside Nrrd Con-- my thoughts on possible paths for the characters who might go...
a) Perfect place for Marigold to go on her first date with her Roommate or on a blind date he sets up, or Tai does. She's likely to go anyway. Neh?
b) Hannelore, now hooked on yaoi anime probably is mightily curious as to what else anime has to offer and after her initial experience with Marigold- well her Terminator/Cleaner Outfit is going to fit right in at the Nrrdcon and it'll be amusing to see who'll be more shocked at her presence there. Hanners in the masses of Funk-kiddies or them seeing a real woman near them and not a fellow geek. (though she does qualify as an uber geek with her counting talent. She is going to beat the pants off innumerable nerds/nrrds in trivia - imagine the following question- "How many tribbles were there in Trouble with tribbles if the tribbles really started off with X" She'll know how many were actually shown on screen, how many would mathematically be possible and how many got killed off and how many were transported to the Klingon ship at the end of the episode - all off the top of her head... She's gonna gain fanboys and get exposed to more than she ever expected anime-wise. Tentacular...
c) The trio of Anthro-PC's will likely go too, sneaking out after Marten forbids them. The MP3 player will end up being used at the dance and experiencing Trance music and having the electronic version of an acid trip, maybe... Halfpint will be in heaven and Marigold's doll will have to shock more than a few Fanboys wanting to see her Eel trick (she'd show them the shocking one of course... :-D)
d) Faye goes just to exercise her Spite and Scorn muscles- She gets crowned Dark Lord/Queen of the Damned of several Memes at the same time and has to ask Marten about how to properly whip them...when is it proper, when can she do it for just fun and when does it border on what his mother does/did?
e) Raven makes a showing in a daring dere-dere meme, for the SCIENCE! of it all and cause dating pool here can't be any worse than what's available in the physics dept.?
just the odd thoughts after no sleep in 3 days and well, so far no spiders and the walls aren't breathing much more than usual...meds for ptsd and migraines must be keeping that stuff in check, but dangit to hell I need some sleep. My muse is getting freaking weird and I don't need another one of those letters from my editor about a story idea I had no idea I'd sent her way in the first place... :-o

A: You have a point there.
B: A dress. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumper_dress)

I need a jumper for my cosplay as an 11 year old girl. It must be pink.
-

B: A dress. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumper_dress)
Well, well - that's one usage I've not come across.
I note that Wikipedia is too po-faced to mention that the pinafore worn as an apron is commonly referred to as a pinny. For that matter, when I was young, I would call a sweater a pully (short for pullover).
-
Strangely enough, the first time I heard the word "pullover" it was in Spanish and it meant t-shirt. My new (at the time) Cuban stepfamily kept saying "?no tienes otro pulover?" and I was like "what?"
-
Because no one else has said it:
I think Tai looks just adorable with those cat ears. And I say this as someone who's otherwise uninterested in the whole otaku "catgirl" thing. Or in any part of otaku culture for that matter.
-
The look on Tai's face in the fifth panel was great. "wait-wha?"
-
Surely, I'm not the only person who upon hearing about a parental dinner possibility had sirens in her head going
MAYDAY MAYDAY PRIME OPPORTUNITY FOR DORA TO GET ALL INSECURE.
Course, then again, Dora might not even be in attendance. Which, I imagine would cause more problems, with her wanting to know why she was not there.
Or maybe Jeph is going to use the chance to show some growth and development in Dora's insecurities and faith in their relationship. We shall see, I guess.
-
I love Marten's face in panels 4 and 5.
-

That's rather silly considering how well she handled his mum.
-
I am extremely pleased with Marten's deadpan.
-
Nrrd Con - Should prove interesting if Faye turns up. But I think the Klingon's would be in trouble :D
I hope that Dora is there at the dinner with Marten's dad. It would prove . . . . . . interesting.
-
I have a new found respect for Marten (not that i didn't like anyway, but meh), that kinda humor takes skill to pull off! I'm Impressed!
-
Not too hard if you're just a drawn comic figure though.
Comics nice. Nothing to discuss. Bleh. Okay, then I try some of the silly smileys here I never use: :police: 8-)
... why is the smiley angel dead, anyway ? He has X-es as eyes ...
-
That's rather silly considering how well she handled his mum.
I think the huge adolescent crush she had for her probably played a role in how swimmingly that meeting went, though.
-
i just realized. Martens parents, its like Chandler Bing's parents from Friends xD His mom makes erotic novels and his dad is gay! I wonder if Jeph got the idea from that or its just a coincidence.
-
Not just gay, but Chancellor's dad was a female impersonator. Played by Anne Margaret, if I remember correctly.
Most gay guys don't wear corsets, by the way. Although that popped into my mind as an alternative punchline, too!
I am extremely pleased with Marten's deadpan.
OK, I know it's me, but in the "beat" panel I actually saw a slight narrowing of the eye, a tightening of the lips, and a push upward near the center of his eyebrows signalling repressed bad memories.
Looking back, it ain't really there, of course. And that's what makes Jeph great!
Last comment, on a "chunkier" Tai - at least she's got room now for some internal organs!
Can't wait for NrdCon.
-
That's rather silly considering how well she handled his mum.
I think the huge adolescent crush she had for her probably played a role in how swimmingly that meeting went, though.
Also considering that they were not dating at the time, and the worst of her relationship insecurities conversations/arguments have come out since they hooked up.
-
We're going to meet Marten's dad! Squee. That should have an exclamation point, but I'm deadpanning.
-
The look on Tai's face in the fifth panel was great. "wait-wha?"
No no, it was more of a 'ohmigod no I'm so stupid for saying that so sorry'. That was a really mean joke to play by Marten, though.
-
Tai appears to be heavier in this style.
She has a less boyish figure.
Maybe it's not an art change--maybe she just has kleenex stuffed in her bra.
-

Silly. Those are ^ ^ eyes.
-
Whoa! Either Jeph's sleep schedule is really messed up, or...
I was just going to check the forums, and I saw tomorrows comic - posted at 6:40 PM today! He must've done it in advance, and didn't want to wait up late to post it. I hope he's sleeping better...
It looks like Hanners is sleep deprived and a little depressed in the last panel. Thinking about all the parental bullshit in your life will do that! The "OMG I have to tell Marigold" is priceless, though. And I think the eyes are getting a little bigger again. Which works for her.
Personally, I love spontaneity... in me. Hate it in other people. So I sympathize with Dora!
-
Wait...it's actually called "Smif"?
...I suppose they're in "Norfhampton," in "Hamptire County," next to...um...Hatley...and...Ahnerst...got nuffin'.
Although this probably does mean they really are in "Assychusetts."
-
It's been Smif throughout the strip, there was only one time I recall seeing "Smith". I think it was on the help wanted sign for the Library job... I figured Jeph slipped.
Although most of the stuff that says "Smif" is unofficial stuff, like the poster, so maybe it's just a heavily used nickname.
-
We do tend to mangle pronunciation around here... "Cah", "cab'nit", "draw" (referencing the slide-out things cabinets have that you put stuff in), "lodge" (not small)...
But since it's written it's probably a nickname.
-
Very sweet of Hanners to think of her new friend.
-
Well, it should be interesting to see how Mari-Bear and Hanners handle the Fanboys :D
Oooooooh, some issues there - aren't there Hanners
-
I love the new Hanners details. She looks a lot more sleep-deprived without looking any less Hanners-ish.
-
But the poor girl looks sooo worn out... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HANNERS! SLEEP IS GOOD M'KAY!?
-
And don't think about the dust mites who are breeding during every hour you slumber.
-
Oh crap... Now I'm worried about dust mites... :-o
-
Just pull the covers back on your bed in the morning, bright light kills them.
Also, cool comic today. And we'll be seeing Marten's dad, probably by Friday :-o
-
Marten's dad will turn out to look exactly like him, right down to the hoodie, and Dora will get confused and try to kiss the wrong one causing angst and hilarity.
OK, possibly not, but it would be funny if it turned out that Marten gets all his hoodies from his dad because dear ol' da' owns a stake in the factory or something.
-
It's alright Hanners - none of my lads were "planned" and my wife and I still love them. Although there are days when you wish that the last grandparental headcount hadn't been so accurate....
-
My mom was infertile.
Well, that's what the doctors said.
Surprise!
Surprise!
Surprise!
Surprise!
(I have three younger brothers, too)
-
Just pull the covers back on your bed in the morning, bright light kills them.

That wont work! The natural light of day hurts my eyes...
-
Am I the only one who noticed Hanners' hair is really thick on the outlines? Just like the sweater. Looks kind of out of place.
-
That's Jeph experimenting with the line weights I think. Depicting volume and such. However, with the high contrast between the lines and Hanner's hair colour, it does tend to look a little out of place.
-
I like it. It creates a realistic messy look.
-
I guess I'm the first again for the new strip.
I wonder why Dora's so damn insecure? Maybe it's from having Sven as a brother...
And if she wants to make a good impression, maybe it's time to get the last of the black cut out of the hair - it's long enough, now!
Can't waiit to meet Marten's dad - this should be good!
-
^ Agreed with cutting the black bits out.
And now her insecurity is just getting annoying. I mean insecurity is one thing but now she's taking it too far.
-
Hmmmmmmm
Dora and Marten's mom - Hey! wasn't that image done already??!
I winder if Dora and Marten's dad will exchange dress designs?
:D
-
GAH! Another image to haunt my mind and keep me from the sweet, blisful embrace of the sleep spiders...
hold on...
Let me check my notes...
-
Dora's nowhere near as nervous about meeting a Marten parent as Faye was.
-
Dora's shown in the past that she's insecure and freaks out about things no matter how big or little they are. Not surprised she's nervous about meeting Marten's father.
-
Most people are usually a little nervous meeting the parents - and what's wrong with wanting to make a really good first impression?
To use the old cliche, it's not like she'll be able to make another if this one goes south.
-
I wonder if Dora and Marten's dad will exchange dress designs?
:D
He's gay, that doesn't mean he's a cross dresser! Most gay guys don't wear women's clothes, and a some transvestites aren't gay. You're confusing Marten's dad with Chandler's dad. Stop it!
Trust me on this, I've worked in the theatre for a very long time! Gay men are usually sharp dressers (at least the ones I know are), and so they care enough what they look like to know how silly they'd look in women's clothes!
Of course, some of them can carry it off well, or don't care. They're called drag queens.
And so ends today's rant/lesson.
-
My gay roommate has a long rant about the definitions and lines between drag queen, transvestite, and other terms and stuff. Some terms are specifically for gay men who dress as women and others for straight men who enjoy dressing in women's clothing. I don't recall everything, and he's asleep right now so I can't ask him. He's gone on this rant before. Also, he wrote a paper on it for his class on aesthetics last year.
-
Could you ask him if there's a specific term for "guy who was dumped naked in a cornfield after his bachelor party and could only find a discarded gingham dress before reaching civilisation" please?
I need it for the report. :police:
-
Gee, I wonder if I was being humorous?
-
You can design a dress without wearing it.
-
LIEZ
-
You can design a dress without wearing it.
I couldn't.
-
Gee, I wonder if I was being humorous?
Gee, I dunno. It's hard to tell in here...
:|
-
Most people are usually a little nervous meeting the parents - and what's wrong with wanting to make a really good first impression?
To use the old cliche, it's not like she'll be able to make another if this one goes south.
:? Does anyone actually do this? Or know someone who does this? Get their hair done/freak out about clothes? Sure, nervous is OK but looking pretty isn't going to make much difference unless their parents are really conservative which I think we can say Marten's dad isn't. :)
Everyone's entitled to do whatever comes naturally to them but I'd rather start the way I'd like to continue - act like myself. I wouldn't want to build an unnatural impression I then have to keep up.
-
In regard to Dora's no longer blond hair:
NoooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is all.
-
Ok...
Dora & Marten = Veronica and ... um, Dad?
Think about it... Marten looks like his dad, so Marten = Dad.
Dora looks like his mom, so Dora = Veronica...
Is it me, or is that kind of spooky?
-
Well, yes. A fairly major getting her hair done.
Ah, the old Dora...
And I already like Maurice.
-
Aww, I liked Dora as a blonde. Also, that skirt is a little short for meeting the parents, in my opinion.
-
So Marten will be Andersen Cooper when he grows up?
-
The hell? She spent ALL THAT TIME growing it out, and she dyed it again? We don't even get to see her without the black hair on the ends?
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!
-
I wonder if Dora and Marten's dad will exchange dress designs?

And so ends today's rant/lesson.
It's as they say in Too Wong Foo, "When a straight man puts on a dress and gets his sexual kicks, he is a transvestite. When a man is a woman trapped in a man's body and has a little operation, he is a Transsexual. When a gay man has WAY too much fashion sense for one gender he is a drag queen. And when a tired little Latin boy puts on a dress, he is simply a boy in a dress!"
-
Funny comic, but I agree about Dora's hair! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I know Jeph said not to complain on his twitter, but I can't take this!
-
WTF Dora's hair? Did she really feel so insecure before meeting Marten's dad that she went with what she knows - and dyed it black? Oh bummer, I liked the blonde Dora with the black at the tips...
Then again, maybe Jeph just decided that black hair suits Dora better.
-
May I interject a dissenting voice here and say YAY! Return of the ebon tresses!. I much prefer Dark Dora.
Also, I am old and jaded and rarely laugh out loud these days, but I LOL'ed at this strip. Very much looking forward to next week.
-
I was hoping Dora would cut off the black and be just blonde.
-
Dora has a long history of social anxiety (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=293).
-
I was hoping Dora would cut off the black and be just blonde.
Same. It's kind of funny that Jeph introduced the main character's notorious father for the first time, and all we are doing is bitching about Dora's hair. XD
-
Yay for hot dads! Well, other people's hot dads, when it's your dad it's just kind of weird.
-
Blargh to Dora's hair.
Meanwhile! Initially, I totally misread Dora's comment in that last panel....
-
I like Dora better as a brunette too, but I agree it's just WEIRD that she spent all that time growing it out, seemed to want to go back to blonde for a bit... and then... whoosh, undid all her work.
-
I'm going to add my kudos for 'going back to all black' here too. I think Dora looks much better this way, although i have already aknowledged that i am of biased opinion. Not only am i into 'Goth chicks' (being 1/3 Goth -at the very least [the other parts are 1/3 rev-head and 1/3 computer nerd] myself), but i just happened to have baught a black dye pack myself (medium brown natural, way to 'normal' and boring for me).
-
Obviously we must all now commit hari kari over Dora's hair! Should probably scotch-gard the carpet first or lay down some tarps.
Last panel is the lulz.
-
Anderson Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris make a nice couple.
-
Not just gay, but Chancellor's dad was a female impersonator. Played by Anne Margaret, if I remember correctly.
'He' was Kathleen Turner.
And, my sister and I recently had a discussion about how cute Anderson Cooper and NPH would be as a couple. I am loving this.
-
I was hoping Dora would cut off the black and be just blonde.
Same. It's kind of funny that Jeph introduced the main character's notorious father for the first time, and all we are doing is bitching about Dora's hair. XD
Lol, I liked her hair blonde with the black tips, but she does look more...natural with black hair.
And I think we can all agree that this mini arc will be really interesting, to say the least.
Meanwhile! Initially, I totally misread Dora's comment in that last panel....
Omg so did I! :-D I can't wait to go gray in all honesty.
-
My opinion on the hair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ussCHoQttyQ)
-
Just because somebody has to do it, I'm going to take the position that Jeph just forgot about Dora's hair.
-
So its been a while since I've posted.... but after reading this comic three times in a row I felt I had too.
I thought the strip was hilarious during the first read, so I read it a second time, still thought it was hilarious, so I paid close attention to art and details and all that.... and discovered I misread the punchline entirely.... and it no longer became nearly as funny as I initially thought... though it made a hell of a lot more sense.
So here's what I read the first two times in the fourth panel:
Dora: Oh my God, you are going to be so hot when you go GAY
Given the nature of Dora's open sexuality *AND* her penchant for insecurities, I totally thought it was an appropriate line. Now its just a line showing that Dora is totally gonna marry Marten so she can jump his bones for the next 50 years. Still good in my book, but different
~Silrn
-
I'm with Zombiedude on this one.
-
The hell? She spent ALL THAT TIME growing it out, and she dyed it again? We don't even get to see her without the black hair on the ends?
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!
Hey, at least she got it cut! It was gettng in her eyes.
Besides, now it matches the outfit!
She's just falling back on somethiing familiar in a stressful situation.
-
Well, I thought the double beat-panel thing was clever. Dora's obviously in it for the long term. Interesting fashion choices for her first meeting with Marten's dad though. The conservative black jacket, with the crotch-length miniskirt...
I confess that I'm not sorry to see the return of "Black Dora". With Hanners and Penelope (and Sarah and Hanners' mum and Dora's mum from the archives), there were already quite enough blondes in the strip. But then I'm biased, because I was sorry to see "Gothy Metal Dora" go generally; it set her apart from all the other sassy twenty-somethings in the cast. But hey, I'm just along for the ride...
-
I'm with Zombiedude on this one.
Also HAH punchline :-D
-
Anderson Cooper and Neil Patrick Harris make a nice couple.
This.
-
I personally LOVE the "ahn-shawn-tay" handshake in the fiirst panel!
How apropopopos.
I never thought of the alternate punchline "When you go gay", maybe because I'm going gray. Well, the beard is. The stuff on the top of my head just slid down my back...
My youngest daughter used to braid it an put in little clippies when she was smaller. Kinda uncomfortable under a shirt, though.
Now that I've left you with that mental image, I'll be going!
-
I didn't even NOTICE Dora's hair  I was looking too hard at her mini skirt
-
Hahaha. I am no longer so bothered by the "must-do-my-hair-and-dress-up-excessively" thing because (a) this makes me happy as it's totally accurate to hair dye addiction, (b) I prefer black on Dora and last but not least: (c) it's going to piss so many people off.
-
I couldn't care less what colour Dora's hair is, but I'm happy to see all the little changes Jeph's been working on coming together well in panels 1-3 (you can't notice them so well in side-views).
Also, Marten's dad's boyfriend has some character about his face. Especially in the final panel he looks about as grizzled as a beardless man can get.
-
I dunno why, but I can't help but imagine Martin's dad + stepdad as having really smooth American-pretending-to-be-English accents.
-
Notice how Marten and Dad's expressions mirror each other precisely until the last panel. Nice little touches like this are one of the reasons I like Jeph as a comics artist.
Blergh, indeed.

What I don't get is: Why did Dora go like 'OH SHIT' rather than 'OH WOW' when saying he's going to be hot gone gray?
-
Just popping in to see if everyone was arguing about Dora's hair.
*looks around*
Mmmhmmm.
-
What I don't get is: Why did Dora go like 'OH SHIT' rather than 'OH WOW' when saying he's going to be hot gone gray?
She thought of all the other girls who will want to date Marten.
-
Is it just me, or does Maurice look a lot like Marten's former boss?

Damn, you're right. Maybe jeph has him in his head as 'generic gay guy'.
-

Huh. I thought she did. It's difficult to tell with her.
-
with her insecurities, I think she did mention in a past comic that guys det hotter when they get older but women loose their beuty, she might be freaking out about this because she saw future marten haha.
Or she is just in awe
-
Hmm. Interesting reaction. The only thing any of my friends have ever said about my dad is that he looks like the Gorton's Fisherman. On the lighter side, by the time I'm that old I'll be able to shave without looking like a teenager.
-
did anyone else first read Dora's last line as "Oh my God you are going to be so hot when you turn gay!" ?
Or was it just me.
-
Wait, Marten's dad is gay? I don't even recall his parents being divorced. 0_o
-
I kinda got the feeling that at least Maurice should have a English accent.
-

everytime his dad is mentioned they bring it up haha. It was a mutual divorce and everything went well for both sides.

Yes. At least two people have already said so in this thread.

there you guys go. I was lazy and didn't want to actually do work so I just scratched out a letter. Now a poll must be started over which is better
I hope Jeph doesn't mind, I don't wanna get sued out of my college money
I found Friday's comic extremely amusing. I think the relationship between Henry and Maurice will be hysterical over the next while
-
So here's what I read the first two times in the fourth panel:
Dora: Oh my God, you are going to be so hot when you go GAY
Given the nature of Dora's open sexuality *AND* her penchant for insecurities, I totally thought it was an appropriate line. Now its just a line showing that Dora is totally gonna marry Marten so she can jump his bones for the next 50 years. Still good in my book, but different
The exact same thing happened to me. I read it at work and couldn't figure out why Dora would be so excited about Marten being GAY, but it seemed quirky and amusing.

Yees. Please to not be suing, Mr. Jeph. I'll take it down if it is copyright infringements.
-
Well, now we know where Marten gets his good looks c from.
And dammit! I liked Dora going blonde.
-
Is it just me, or does Maurice look a lot like Marten's former boss?

I think Jeph's drawing-style has improved so much since 624, it's impossible to say.
-

One word: threesomes.
-
Continuity problem?
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=434
In this old one, Henry's BF is named MArcel, and then in 10/16's, he's named Maurice.
Just a nit...
(don't kill me, jeph)
-
Yay! Dora's black-haired again.
-
Blargh to Dora's hair.
Meanwhile! Initially, I totally misread Dora's comment in that last panel....
lol as did I
-
I love the name Maurice.
-
Hmm, something else I thought of as kind of funny/strange. Both Marten and his father are in a relationship with blondes.

While I doubt that its actually a different BF.... Considering the time lapse between the two, its possible its a new BF. But as I already said, I suspect its the same person. Or maybe his name is Maurice Marcel. =D Or in a super unlikely scenario one could be a nickname for the other.

Marten's dad is FAAAB.
and
and and and
they boyfriend=definitely NPH.
-
I love the name Maurice.
"Some people call me the space cowboy
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
Cause I speak of the pompitous of love"
-
I dunno why, but I can't help but imagine Martin's dad + stepdad as having really smooth American-pretending-to-be-English accents.
Marten's dad, I'm not sure. But someone who says "Charmed" and "darling" probably has or is faking an accent.

Or, maybe Marten's mom mis-remembers his name. How closely do divorced people keep track of their ex's current partner?
-
This is of absolutely no significance whatsoever, but I was just idly wondering how Maurice pronounces his name. To rhyme with "Morris", the way I've always heard it used in real life, or to rhyme with the French-style "more-REECE", like Barry Corbin's character in Northern Exposure (which always sounded weird to me)?
If the "Maurice Marcel" theory is correct, probably the latter.
-

This can vary from "not at all" to "manically" and everything in between, really. In the case of Henry and Veronica, well, she said they're still good friends, so...
Some people have issues with remembering names accurately. Maybe it's the case with Veronica?
-
Ummm.. no. In her business, you have GOT to be able remember names!
Shouting out the wrong one at an inappropriate (or even an appropriate) time could be costly!
Besides, you don't want to leave a paper trail!

Huh. I regularly do a similar half-salute thing as Maurice is doing in panel 1. Am I... am I gay now?
-
nah I do the same and Im not gay. Its just a cool thing to do.
-

Aww I say "darling" all the time without an accent.

I don't think you mean it rhymes with Morris. I think you mean people pronounce it as if it were Morris. I've actually never heard it pronounced that way, but then everyone I know who goes by Maurice is actually named Mauricio, so the "EES" thing may just be a carry-over from the Spanish pronunciation.
-

There are no names, there's only mistress and slave.
-
...Or maybe his name is Maurice Marcel. =D
Oh. My. God.
I'd heard of Marcel irons (a type of curling iron) before (my wife was a hair stylist back when she could stand working with the public). I did a little research, and found this (http://ezinearticles.com/?History-of-the-Curling-Iron&id=240096);
"In 1890 two Frenchmen, Maurice Lentheric and Marcel Grateau, used hot-air drying and heated curling tongs to make deep, long-lasting Marcel waves."
Think he was named for two historical French hairdressers?
Think I'm reading too much into this?
Think I'd better get back to grading midterms...
-

I'm pretty sure it's Maur-REESE
that's how I've always heard it.
-
Huh. I regularly do a similar half-salute thing as Maurice is doing in panel 1. Am I... am I gay now?
Using a hand gestures does not make you gay.
Desiring sexual relations with members of your own gender makes you gay.

Oh. OK, I was wondering.

Depends upon who you ask, apparently. :-P
Once I was asked if I'm gay BECAUSE I HAD BAD LUCK WITH WOMEN. :-o
And no, I'm strictly hetero, thank you very much. :-D
-
My mom thought I was gay for not liking Katy Perry. Go figure
-
rotfl :-D
Besides, I wanted to add: Dora looks really good in yesterdays comic :-D
-
I think she looks great now, It Hephs comic, and he has to be happy with her, but i feel compeled to mention that my opinion of her look is that she is actually starting to how *I* see mer in *MY* head.
A note to all you shippers out there: *WARNING* DO NOT GO THERE *WARNING* :police: MY STATEMENT WAS NOT MEANT THAT WAY.
PS: Is it me or is it all little sad that i have to 'discliamer' my post like that?
-

Yeah, but I'm British, so I've always heard it pronounced Morris. Which is why its pronunciation in Northern Exposure always jarred a little.
Sir Michael Caine's real name is Maurice Micklewhite. Not many people know that. (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q="Not+many+people+know+that."&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq="Not+many+people+know+that."&fp=38c542da47a26377) Perhaps that should be the new character's name.

OK, small precaution here:
Zombiedude, I'm sure what Near Lurker just posted was about Katy Perry, and not about your mom.
I'm not certain this is really useful, but you never know, misunderstandings can start pretty fast.
(Should I just start putting disclaimers on any posts I make where I'm not being entirely serious (i.e. pretty much all my posts) ?)
Not meaning to sound abrasive, but that particular attempt at joking was a bit... flawed. This kind of joke can be too easily related to a category of discriminatory clichés that are better left to history. Yes, I know you didn't mean it that way, but you should try a less tired form of jokes. And I'm pretty sure ackronnick's answer was just a "take things at face value" kind of sarcasm, most likely meant to convey something along the line of what I just said.

Easiest just to put it in your sig.

Jeph needs to learn to draw older people more convincingly.

Had to look up who Katy Perry was.
Still don't understand.
-
You know that song "I kissed a girl and I liked it"? She thought I was gay because I didn't like that specific song.
-
... how did your mom test gayness before that song came out?
Anyway, got to say, really liking the facial expressions in the last few comics. Looking great.
-
You know that song "I kissed a girl and I liked it"? She thought I was gay because I didn't like that specific song.
Oh, I get it now. Your mom's confused... she did realize it was a girl singing, right?
I mean, not liking it just proves you're not a lesbian, right? Right?
Parents. :-P
-
I think it's actually a sophisticated reversal of the whole "all boys prefer lesbian porn" trope: If your child doesn't like the idea of two girls kissing, he can't be into girls at all.
Or something.
That combined with abject failure to take into account personal musical taste (ie that her child might actually have some) would explain it also.
-
I loved "I Kissed A Girl" ... the Jill Sobule song, not the Katy Perry one ... hate that song ... way to objectify your own gender, Katy!
