Punk bands I like...
-Dillinger Four
-Andrew Jackson Jihad
-Stiff Little Fingers
-The Queers
- Leftover Crack
- Dead Milkmen

Also I could use some song suggestions for some obvious one like Melvins, Ramones, and The Clash.
-
Rocket from the Crypt.
Also I could use some song suggestions for some obvious one like Melvins, Ramones, and The Clash.
I'd just pick up the albums Houdini, Stoner Witch (Melvins), Rocket to Russia, Ramones (Ramones of course), Combat Rock, and Give 'Em Enough Rope (The Clash)
Maybe London Calling by The Clash too.

First of all, Jawbreaker. Go find 24 Hour Revenge Therapy RIGHT NOW.
Anyway, I don't listen to much punk, but I would suggest Minor Threat, Johnny Hobo & the Freight Trains, and Mexican Power Authority.
-
Also some hardcore punk:
coke bust, sick fix, punch

I actually specifically avoided american hardcore because I knew Jens or Tommy would come along and rack out a more complete and nuanced list than I am personally capable of off the top of my head.
I like threads like this because they make me rack my music brain and remember stuff I might not have listened to for a while, like.

The Germs
Thank you for being this guy.
-
I like this thread very much, It's lacking one or two things though. Unless it isn't and I just missed them, I broke the shit out of my arm and I'm on a fair amount of painkillers so this is highly possible.
The Dicks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09lox_vnJ9Y&feature=related) - I love Gary Floyd so, so much.
Stiff Little Fingers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVjNPNNxySc) - One of the best things anyone ever did with an electric guitar.
Los Crudos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obGfbHb8H2s&feature=related) - If we're bringing in hardcore we can't leave Martin Sorrondeguy out.
The Ergs! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdXoMMee-_I) - Best pop punk band of recent years.
-
"Funhouse" by The Stooges.

I just found this last night, but I am really enjoying Lydia Laska (http://www.myspace.com/lydialaska)

Etc.
-
Tommy's right. "Singles Going Steady" is pretty much a mandatory album for EVERYONE EVER.
-
See Tommy, that is quite a nice list, except that it isn't really related to the OP at all and half of it is post-punk and new wave. Devo are punk only in the sense that Venom are a rock 'n roll band. I mean, partly I avoided post-punk and new wave because you start then getting into this ever broadening definition of punk and three posts down the line you're recommending the dude listen to Throbbing Gristle, early Bathory and All Aboute Eve.
I mean like, I tried to keep my suggestions fairly relevant. For example his liking of Stiff Little Fingers suggests 999 and The Undertones, whilst Leftover Crack suggests crust classics like Axegrinder and Amebix. Also you have that post in a file somewhere don't you?
-
the classics seem to have been well and truly covered so here's something new that I don't think got mentioned yet
(http://blogs.pitch.com/wayward/black%20lips.jpg)

The Riot Before

^ this guy has the right idea!!!
i'd also add Banner Pilot, The Menzingers, The Falcon, Cobra Skulls, The Arteries, Avail, Lifetime and Cadillac Blindside. and i'll second whoever recommended Rocket from the Crypt.
-
Also, the bands listed in the OP are mostly pretty lame so it was an attempt to turn him onto something better.
...except Dead Milkmen....right? RIGHT?!?!?
OH GOD PLEASE AGREE WITH ME
-
Kid Dynamite
Fake Problems
Mischief Brew
Johnny Hobo & the Freight Trains
Chris Burrows/Asking For It
Red Forty
Looks like I've got some downloading to do myself...
-
Depends who you ask. I'd argue that all of the records I posted have a claim to being Punk and so would many writers and critics.
You'd be right to an extent but only a very broad one, I think. Elvis Costello is certainly not someone I'd choose as a representative proponent of punk, for example. Post-punk is punk only in the way ice is frozen steam. They're different things.
Also I think it is kinda dickish to come into a recommendation thread and completely disregard the rules. You don't catch me going into every recommendation thread and demanding people listen to Club Moral or Diabolical Masquerade, do you?
-

-
tommy just wants everyone to have correct musical taste. but it's not incredibly far-fetched to recommend post punk bands to people who like regular punk, in my opinion.
Oh my god I haven't thought about X-Ray Spex in forever thank you Khar.
also, this.
-
But if we start on post-punk we will get into arguments.
Like for example I find Elvis Costello very dull and think good post-punk sounds something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohYp1C14Dp8).
-
Punk didn't begin and end in Britain in 1977.
That is when it stopped sucking though.
-

Obvious troll is obvious.
-
Pretty much. I'm not sure if Tommy is counter-trolling up there though, I am never good at these things.
-
SRS PUNX SRS BSNS
-
i've just re-visited an album i was given a promo of earlier this year - "Ghosts" by the Marked Men. definitely worth checking out - it's basically really good garage-punk with proper bubblegum-pop melodies.
-
Devo are a pretty useful punk recommendation in a lot of ways, since you can draw some very clear lines from them to the kind of punk bands you get on labels like 31G such as The Locust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNrbood0RwY&feature=related). Having said that, I totally agree that given the huge scope of punk someone just reeling off punk records they like without paying heed to the kind of punk the person asking for recommendations is interested in isn't the best approach. Correct Musical Taste isn't a legitimate reason either, since anyone rocking Dillinger Four, Stiff Little Fingers and the Dead Kennedys is in no need of a taste readjustment.
Anyway, we've left out one of the greatest punk bands of the last couple of decades and this needs redressing. I speak of course of Propagandhi. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5YZ7FELtCI&feature=related) is one of the best punk songs ever, from their second album, but they really hit their stride with their third LP Todays Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3ObasCAMVc) which included glorious moments of hardcore simplicity like Fuck The Border (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6bXqNp4UhE&feature=related) as well as ridiculously catchy tracks such as Back To The Motor League (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU6Ej4id2E4). They're still on form these days, their latest album containing an impassioned plea against nationalism in hockey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwsAruHCHHw), continued dedication to the vegan jihad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKtrqgxVsRo) and a declaration of love to heavy fucking metal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=614dHJoR-gI&feature=related).

Why is everyone getting so upset about this genre thing?
-
It is srs bsns, and though genre is an ugly and messy thing, to certain extent it pertains to what the music actually sounds like, e.g. The Birthday Party does not sound very much like Leftover Crack.
-
maybe not to you
-
I'm probably biased w/r/t that particular comparison. I've never thought Leftöver Crack is very good.
-
well, there's your problem, right there.
we can fix it though. it'll take a few days and cost a bit more since it's kind of an awkward place to work on but i think we can do it. Just sign here.
</auto-mechanic>
-
Also very good, since it's the band Leföver Crack developed from: Choking Victim.
-
so did you listen to coke bust yet?
-
"destroy their future" by american steel. fucking AWESOME.
-
Punk didn't begin and end in Britain in 1977.
That is when it stopped sucking though.
Shock Troops came out in 1982, what are you on about, Khar?
-
I'll buy that.
the Misfits started in '77 and that's practically all i care about anyway
-
dunno quite how i forgot this one, but i've just spun it a few mins ago, and goddamn if it isn't a fine slab of rough-around-the-edges punk rock awesomeness!!! it's like the logical middle ground between husker du and every hot water music-esque gainesville-hardcore band you've ever heard! if you know of a guy with a gruffer voice than frankie stubbs, then you're a liar and i will fight you.
(album's called "mush" btw)
-
Fugazi. Thank me later.
-
Guys why can't we all just
get along listen to the Dead Milkmen
-
If I'm reading this right, it looks like Khar says punk STOPPED sucking in '77, which predates 1982 by five years.
I think veep might be implying that the first wave of British punk is kinda meh, and that things only got really awesome with the UK82 second wave of punk, oi and proto-crust, which is a position I can have some sympathy with, even if I cannot condone it.
Take your Fugazi and get out of this fucking thread NAO.
-
I will fight you untill I die over Fugazi
-
Don't worry. I have filled my heart with hate.
-
pinkpinche you will not fight alone.
dc respect, yo.
-
actually, seeing s how Fugazi is literally the best band in the world, you should probably give him an IOU card with 5 blowjobs straight away
Fugazi are one of the most meh-inspiring bands in the world, if you ask me.
Also, yeah, I totally mis-read Khar's post.
-
I'm tired of pretending it's my fault somehow for not liking Fugazi. Fuck those guys.
-
Hey guys everybody chill out.
It is OK to not like Fugazi.
But they are the best band in the world and that is inarguable fact.
You don't have to like them, but to not do so makes you wrong. If you are OK with being wrong then I see no reason why we can't just all continue on with our lives.
-
I'm sorry if I change the subject a bit, but I've seen the genre "post-punk" being name-dropped a bit in this thread. What music is considered as post-punk and what is not? Is it only a historical assocation or an actual sound and esthetic? If it's too off-topic, I'll start another thread.
-
Xiu Xiu is post-punk. That's the only example I can think of right now.
-
That sad band with the epilepsy guy who died.
-
You don't have to like them, but to not do so makes you wrong. If you are OK with being wrong then I see no reason why we can't just all continue on with our lives.
Nuh uh, it just means you've got a thing for interesting music, as opposed to boring music.

And for the guy who started the thread:
-
Recommending Fugazi in this thread is about as relevant as recommending Nirvana.
-
I'm sorry if I change the subject a bit, but I've seen the genre "post-punk" being name-dropped a bit in this thread. What music is considered as post-punk and what is not? Is it only a historical assocation or an actual sound and esthetic? If it's too off-topic, I'll start another thread.
Post-punk is a name given to a variety of sounds. Historically, it refers to those bands that first started mixing punk rock guitar sounds and energy with other slightly different sounds, like Joy Division, with their synth washes and icy production, Gang of Four, with their funky bass and minimal dubby aspects. With American bands, a lot of the earlier punkier new wave bands are also called post-punk, like Devo and Talking Heads. Pere Ubu are pretty post-punk; there's definitely some punky drums and guitar sometimes, but there's also bits of very minimal melody, saxophone, synths, tape sounds, etc. Do you get the idea? Some post-punk bands are very "punk and ____" but others are still very punk but something about the way it's done or produced is markedly different enough to maybe not want to just call it punk. For a band like Xiu Xiu, which is I guess kind of post-punk, it's less "punk and ____" and more "____, and _____, and _____, oh and also a bit of punk."
-
Reviving this thread because I need some inspiration.
I'm looking for no-fi punk rock. Stupidly no-fi. Something along the lines of The Germs, The Crowd, or Times New Viking: true punk-rock nasally shite vocals and fuck-easy power chords.
Gimme whatcha got fuckers!
-
Teengenerate!
Sample song: "Kicked Out of The Webelos" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-skc151a7k0)
-
Guitar Wolf!
-
the drips s/t album. top fuckin' notch.

Sorry, dont know how to make that neater.
You also might like Star Fucking Hipsters, Minor Threat, Black Flag...
Are you asking for recommendations of anything in punk genre or based on your interests?
-
I've been on a huge Grabass Charlestons binge lately. Probably because I'm seeing them with the Dopamines on Thursday?
-
oh, also, not sure how i didn't think of this last time i posted, but for lo-fi, nasally, catchy punk, look no further than "ghosts" by the marked men - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj7j7H7kXPs&feature=related
and also "midnight cashier" by the high tension wires, which is a side-project consisting of members of the marked men and the riverboat gamblers.
-
Guitar Wolf and Teengenerate were right up my alley -- pretty much exactly what I'm looking for.
Friends of mine are doing a recording challenge (four songs, four days) and I wanted to join in, so I'm looking for some inspiration. I think I'm going to be doing some classic, two-minutes-tops, zero-intro/zero-outro power chords and absolutely zero time in which there are not lyrics being thrown at you.
-
The fact that nobody mentioned Billy Childish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Childish) is downright terrifying. You need to get some Thee Headcoats and/or Buff Medways in your life.
Also, if you don't already own both Busted At Oz (http://www.mediafire.com/?zhumikyuwum) and Flex Your Head (http://www.dischord.com/release/007/flex-your-head), you're blowing it.
-
What you do is copy FYH ten times then play it from different angles simultaneously.
Or go to the Dischord site and play all the songs at the same time.
-
Ahem...
punx
-
Billy Childish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Childish)
I've been meaning to get into Billy Childish for a while now, but his body of work is pretty daunting. Any suggestions on a good place to start?
-
Thee Headcoats - The Messerschmitt Pilot's Severed Hand.
This contains one of my favourite songs ever - 'We Hate The Fucking NME'. (http://www.box.net/files#/files/0/f/0/1/f_126539397)
-
I heartily recommend Streetlight Manifesto, I saw them last week they were amazing and did a storming cover of Dead Milkmen's 'punk rock girl'. They only have 2 albums which are both great.
-
So I just re-read this thread, and now I'm sitting here wondering why nobody said Propagandhi.
-
Something about them not being very good.
-
something about SHUT THE FUCK UP THEY'RE TOTALLY AWESOME!
-
Oh look, somebody did say something about them way back on the first page.
-
I heartily recommend Streetlight Manifesto, I saw them last week they were amazing and did a storming cover of Dead Milkmen's 'punk rock girl'. They only have 2 albums which are both great.
They put out a new one this year, but it's all covers (including Punk Rock Girl).
-
something about SHUT THE FUCK UP THEY'RE TOTALLY AWESOME!
then john k samson left OWNED
-
if you genuinely find the john k samson era stuff (which sounds like a slightly more pissed off NOFX-knock-off) better than the last three propagandhi albums, i pity you.
-
What if you find John Samson's Propagandhi era to be pretty bad but also miles better than the unremitted shit that is Propagandhi
-
Can we just make this thread about John Samson now?
-
What if you find John Samson's Propagandhi era to be pretty bad but also miles better than the unremitted shit that is Propagandhi
i honestly can't see how any fan of the genres the band deal in could dislike their recent output, or at the very least, appreciate it in some way. i mean, yeah the politics might be offputting to some, but musically, they're pretty respectable.
